CHAPTER 7:
Silence reigned in the hut, broken only when Kirara occasionally scratched herself.
Sango was the first to recover. "Er…I'm sorry, but I thought I heard you say that Inuyasha will never become a hanyou again." She blinked at the old man. "That can't be right…right?"
Tokichi scratched at his beard. "I shoulda rephras'd tha'. Wha' I meant ta say wus tha' In'yasha, both dem'n an' hum'n, will nev'r want ta become a hany'u again."
Sango blinked again. "…Ok now I'm even more confused."
"Inuyasha won't want to become a hanyou again?" Kaede asked, surprised. "But how can that be, ever since his separation both human and demon have been trying to turn back. Well the human more so than the demon." She added as an afterthought.
Tokichi closed his eyes and poked a finger into his ear. "Ya gotta und'r stand one thin'. Both dem'n an' hum'n sides o' yer friend're now five 'undred years apar' in time. Th' more time they spend apar', th' weak'r their hany'u link'll get." He opened his eyes, looking serious. "Which means tha' in due co'rse, th' link'll perman'ntly disappear."
"…and then what?" Miroku asked.
"Then th' dem'n'll stay as a dem'n and th' hum'n'll stay as a hum'n." he said. "Forev'r." he added.
Silence again, and this time Shippo broke it. "Oh boy." He squeaked. "Kagome's not going to like this."
That snapped Sango out of her stupor. "Wait, what about Kagome-chan? If both demon and human will stay separated then she…" she trailed off, eyes wide.
Tokichi turned to her, the toothless smirk once again in place. "Tha's fer ya ta find out on yer own, when they get 'ere." He turned to Miroku who housed the same expression. "Bu' I see th' monk has it figur'd out."
The monk chuckled, looking at the bewildered faces of his other three companions. "I take back what I said about this being funny." He said. "This is fucking hilarious!"

In all honesty, no sane person on earth would agree to house a full-fledged demon in their home, nor decide to take said demon shopping with them and their son. But the Higurashis were known to be a little on the crazy side, Grandpa Higurashi being a classic example, so she guessed this little situation could be overlooked too.
Still she had to wonder, for the umpteenth time again, how her daughter had managed to reign in the morbidly curious demon every time he crossed over.
Mama Higurashi nearly broke her heel as she tried to keep up with the combined pace of her enthusiastic son and the extremely hyper demon who seemed very intent on sniffing at anything and everything they came across. They had left the boutique half an hour ago with extreme difficulty since Demon Inuyasha was convinced that the hanging monster costumes were actually demons and had taken to attacking them. She and Souta barely managed to restrain the demon by mentioning Kagome's name, which caused him to misunderstand that Kagome was 'kidnapped' by said 'demons' and had taken to attacking again. Thankfully, a mobile hot dog vendor passed by and the smell distracted the demon long enough to let the two humans pull him away from the shop.
Mama doubted if they would be welcome there again.
After the purchase Souta had insisted on getting something to eat and Inuyasha's rumbling stomach had agreed with him. They stopped at a nearby McDonald's outlet where Souta took to teaching the demon the mechanics of eating a french fry ("No niichan, you're supposed to bite it not stick it up your nose!") and pouring ketchup ("Ok now gently squeeze it. Gently come on— *SPLURT* I said GENTLY!"). Mama had laughed at that and wished she had taken the camera, it would be great to show the pictures to Kagome when she got back.
Presently, they were walking down the lane that led to the shrine and Mama noticed that the demon was attracting quite a lot of attention. It was to be expected though, what with Inuyasha's long silver hair, strange choice of clothing and markings on his face and fangs, people must think he was a cosplayer or something. Mama giggled. She wondered if this was the reaction he got every time he went out in public. Well, at least his red eyes are hidden; she didn't want anyone getting scared after all.
He looked harmless enough, she thought, as he patiently let Souta drag him to various shops. In fact, he looked like he was enjoying himself. Mama saw the way his bandana would move at times, indicating that his ears were perked up and the way his nostrils flared as he took in all the foreign scents. He looked every bit like a puppy who had been introduced his new home. She figured if he had a tail he would be wagging it constantly. Half demon or full, he was still the same Inuyasha as before, albeit less talkative. Mama smiled as she watched Souta exclaim everything in detail to the demon, a big smile nearly splitting his face in half. The demon probably didn't understand a word but Souta was not deterred, he still kept talking excitedly.
Mama smiled. Kagome really should bring Inuyasha over more often.
They were about to turn a corner when Inuyasha suddenly froze. Mama and Souta watched as he started sniffing at the air with more urgency, ears going crazy beneath the bandana. "Inuyasha?" Mama called out. "What's wrong?"
Without warning, the demon sped off ahead. "Oh dear." Mama said before following him, Souta in tow. "Inuyasha wait!" They found him in front of a clothing store, face and hands pressed against the store's large glass window as he stared intently at two girls inside. Two girls, who, Mama noticed, wore the same school uniform as Kagome.
"Mate!" Inuyasha cried out and banged at the window, causing the girls to jump. They looked up and nearly screamed when they saw the frantic demon.
"Inu-no-Niichan wait!" Souta ran up to him and tugged at his sleeve. "That's not Kagome-neechan!"
The demon shook his head, still staring. "Mate's smell." He said, scrunching up his nose. "Funny smell."
"Huh? Smell?"
"He must be talking about the uniform Souta." Mama said, panting slightly from the exertion. She put a hand on the demon's shoulder. "Inuyasha that's not Kagome. They are from Kagome's school, which is why their dresses smell similar."
Demon Inuyasha looked at her and cocked his head. "Skool?"
Mama nodded. "Yes school. That's where she went to today morning."
The demon looked into the window and back at her. "That…not mate." he stated rather than asked, pointing one claw inside.
"No that's not." When his ears drooped Mama hastily continued. "But it's almost time for her to be back so let's go wait at home ne?" she smiled. "Come on Souta."
Souta nodded and took Inuyasha's hand again. "Niichan let's go." But before they could leave the two girls from before came out.
"Ano…excuse me but…" The taller of them, a girl with short A-line bobbed hair, stepped up. "Do I know you?" she asked the demon, who sniffed at her and raised one eyebrow.
Mama came to his rescue. "Ah I'm sorry dear, he mistook you for someone else. Sorry to have startled you." She gave the girl a smile
"Oh…ok." The girl nodded slowly, giving Inuyasha a confused once-over before turning to her friend. Mama and Souta watched as they walked away, whispering to themselves. "That was close." Souta let out a breath.
Mama nodded. "We can't risk anyone finding out about Inuyasha. Let's head back." She turned to see Demon Inuyasha looking wistfully at the disappearing girls. "Mate." He whispered dejectedly, looking like a lost puppy.
Mama's eyes softened. Inuyasha must be missing Kagome's presence badly. She'd heard stories from her father about how possessive demons were over their mates. They couldn't go even a minute without seeing them. She wondered if it was the same for Inuyasha too, now that he was full demon. Smiling, she put a hand on his shoulder. "Kagome will be back soon, so let's wait for her at home ne?"
The demon stared at her a few minutes before giving her a curt nod. But before he could take another step a sudden pain hit his chest and he grunted. "Inuyasha?" Mama called out but the demon barely heard her. A pulse of pain erupted from somewhere above his heart and he fell to his knees, giving out a growl. "What's wrong dear?" Mama asked concerned, leaning to hold him. She gasped when Inuyasha suddenly growled and bared his fangs at her. "Oh my."
"Mama what's going on? What's wrong with Inu-no-niichan?" Souta asked her, staring worriedly at the demon as he clutched his chest.
"I don't know, he suddenly—
"Mama!?" Mama Higurashi turned to see her daughter and her three friends standing before them. Kagome gaped at them, slack jawed and Mama saw her friends follow her line of sight, eyes lighting up in recognition when they spotted Inuyasha.
"Oh dear."
XxxsplitpersonalityxxX
Ok so he was here. Now what?
Human Inuyasha scratched his ear as he gazed down into the empty depths of the bone eater's well. Well it wasn't like he could just jump through and reach Kagome since the fucking well decided to close up again. He sighed and kicked at a stone. "This sucks."
The glaring afternoon sun had tempered down a bit, its heat not scorching anymore, as the day advanced towards evening. Inuyasha looked up at the blue sky peppered with fluffy white clouds and sniffed lightly. He was right. All that running around had calmed him down a bit but he still felt restless. He kicked at the stone again and flopped down next to the well, leaning back against it. What would Kagome be doing over there? Well she might have gone to take that 'test' of hers. And his demon? He wondered if he was behaving. Inuyasha snorted. He felt like the owner of a dog who'd left his pet with a friend for a day. He chuckled at the thought.
The wind picked up and played with the bangs on his head. Inuyasha watched as it attacked the leaves on the ground, causing them to flitter slightly. He thought back to when Kagura had attacked them, her harsh winds trying to slice and dice at their bodies. When his demon had suddenly rushed in the direction Kagome had left Inuyasha was confused and angry, thinking the demon was trying to make off with her again. However when he saw Kagura attacking her he almost lost it, and not thinking of the fact that he was a human with a practically pathetic rusty sword he rushed at the wind demon. He knew deep down that he should have let his demon side handle Kagura but his pride wouldn't let him. It was with reluctance that he told Kagome to be by his demon, he had wanted to save her on his own. He knew he had no one but him to blame for letting Kagura escape with the shards. Had he not been so reckless in his attack they wouldn't be in this situation. And the well wouldn't have closed up like this.
He looked down at his clawless hand and scowled. 'I'm a human'. He cannot use that excuse anymore. It didn't matter if he was human, demon or hanyou. Protecting Kagome and his friends took top priority. He must be stronger. Yet in this weakened state, relying on his demon strength was the only thing he could do. Even his trusty Tessaiga was rendered useless to him now. Inuyasha clenched his teeth in pained dismay and punched the rim of the well. The sting in his arm was nothing compared to the wrenching pain in his heart. How long will he remain a helpless human? How long will he have to stay in the sidelines and watch helplessly as his demon side protected Kagome, the way he wanted to? Will he forever remain a burden to his friends as a human who cannot fight?
"Dammit! Dammit!" Two more punches to the well and he felt the wood crack beneath his hand. Inuyasha hissed as the pain shot up to his elbow and shoulder and he brought his hand down, scowling at the redness and scratches on it. He had to become strong. He won't let his demon one up him anymore. Next time he will protect Kagome on his own!
The wind died down and the forest became still again. Blowing on his stinging palm Inuyasha leaned back to get more comfortable. His thoughts wandered and he found himself thinking about his demon side again. For some reason, it made him want to scowl. It didn't make sense, even if his demon was a different being now it was still part of him. Demon blood ran through his veins once along with his human blood. It shouldn't be that hard to collaborate with it. But now that they were separated, he felt more animosity than comradeship to his demon. He especially hated the way his demon lurked around Kagome, calling her his mate and stuff. Kagome was not his demon's mate, she was his woman!
The human blinked. His woman? Kagome was not his woman…was she? Inuyasha blinked again. Wasn't she? He shook his head. Those weird thoughts he had as a hanyou were flitting through his head more frequently now. He wondered if his demon felt the same. Nah, he probably just went by his demon instincts and claimed Kagome as his mate because she was closest to him. The human scowled. Kagome was not the demon's mate dammit, she belonged to him!
Inuyasha blinked again. Damn these stupid thoughts, he thought with a blush. Saying she belonged to him made him no better than his demon half. He was better than his demon dammit! Of course thinking of Kagome made him blush, thinking of her smile made him gooey inside and thinking of her supple young body made him—he better not think of that! He'd been having so many weird thoughts already and he didn't want to add more to his head. But he couldn't stop himself. He thought of Kagome smiling at him, calling out his name in her musical voice as she would tell him she loved him. Kagome would say she loved him! Not his demon!
Kagome would say she loved his human self!
"Ouch!" Inuyasha hissed at the sudden pain. He glanced down at his hand. Though the skin was still slightly red it didn't sting anymore. In fact the pain seemed to be coming from his chest, right at the center. He shifted his haori a little to look at the skin. It showed no sign of injury. The human shrugged it off as his imagination and continued his thoughts.
Of course, it made sense. Kagome was a human after all; it was only natural for her to love a fellow human. Inuyasha snorted, the idea of her being with a demon was ridiculous! Besides he was strong as a human. He could get stronger too. Miroku was a human and a fairly strong one; surely he could train Inuyasha to fight in his human state. Soon they wouldn't need his demon side anymore. If he trained hard enough, he could even hunt down Naraku and kill him. And then he and Kagome can restore the jewel shards and start a life together. He wouldn't be a hanyou anymore but it didn't matter. Kagome wouldn't ever love a half-breed, who would? And she couldn't be with a full-blooded demon; he would never love her like a human would. She would have a normal human life with him. And if she ever wanted to go back to her time, then he could accompany her. He wouldn't have to hide himself out in her home anymore since he was human. And he could give her normal human babies. His kids would never be tormented for their mixed blood like he had once been.
Yes, he nodded to himself. Kagome was better off with his human side.
"Urgh! Ow!" The pain hit him again, unexpected and sudden. Inuyasha frowned as he felt the pain pulse in time with his heartbeat. Inuyasha took a deep breath and flexed his chest and hands but the pain still stayed. In fact, it seemed to be getting stronger. The human scowled, he ought to let Kaede look at him. Maybe the fight last night had injured one of his ribs or something.
No sooner had he gotten to his feet when another wave of pain, far more intense than the previous one, hit him and he fell to his knees with a sharp cry. Inuyasha clutched at his chest and found the skin to be burning. His shoved his haori aside to look but the skin was still normal. Tears pooled at his eyes as another wave hit him, followed immediately by another, and another. The pulsing increased in frequency and his heart sped up, as if trying to keep up with the beats of pain. He felt his throat scorch, like he had drunk something extremely hot and spicy and he coughed dryly, trying to get the disturbance out. The forest swam before his eyes and he fell down to his elbows, still coughing. He opened his mouth to scream but only a raspy "Hah!" came out. Inuyasha grit his teeth, willing the pain to go away and his tears not to fall. He crawled his way to the well, grunting when another wave hit him and forced himself to kneel. His body was hot and sticky with sweat and his throat was burning so bad he felt he could breathe fire out of it. His eyes rolled up in their sockets and for half a second, he lost consciousness.
When he opened his eyes he was no longer in the forest but in a brightly lit place. He didn't know if he was standing, sitting or kneeling. His body was still hot all over and the pain still pulsed over him. He looked down to see a silver chain attached to his chest, right above where his heart lay beating rapidly. He tugged at the chain and felt the pain lessen a little. The light around him grew brighter, blinding him with its intensity and he shielded his eyes. The pain was becoming too much to bear, the heat scorching his skin and the light glowing to an intensity that almost rivaled the sun's. He squinted around and saw a large blue door to his right. He guessed it was his way out of this strange hot place. He moved to it but the chain on his chest prevented him from reaching it. He tugged at the silver again. If he could get the damn chain off then he could get away from his heat and pain.
'Don't remove it!' A voice that felt vaguely familiar pleaded to him. 'Bear the pain for a while. It will get better. Don't remove the chain!' But he didn't want to bear the pain anymore. It was eating him alive. And the light was burning him, blinding his senses. He wanted to get out. He tugged at the chain again.
'Don't! You will regret it!' He didn't care, this place was hurting him. Something told him he would escape from the pain and the heat if he went through that door. He didn't want to hurt anymore.
Clutching at the chain and ignoring the pleading voice he gave out a loud cry as he wrenched it out of his chest and pushed his way out through the door.
"Aaaaargh!" Inuyasha screamed, clawing at his burning chest. He fell onto his side as his grip on the well became slack, and the forest tilted along with him. Black crept around the edges of his vision and he gazed blearily at the slight crack on the well as he gave himself into the soothing darkness.
'Kagome…'
XxxsplitpersonalityxxX
"Kagome's boyfriend-kun!"
The three girls exclaimed, going starry-eyed as they looked at Demon Inuyasha. The demon for his part gave them a confused look before another pain hit him and he let out a small cry.
That cry pulled Kagome out of her shock. "Inuyasha! What's wrong?" She ran up to him. "What's wrong Mama?"
"I don't know dear, he was fine till now but then he suddenly collapsed." Her mother said, wringing her hands in worry.
"He was holding his chest neechan." Souta told her, eyes wide. "You think it's a heart attack?"
"I doubt that." Kagome pushed aside the demon's haori to look at his chest for any signs of injury. There were none. The skin was unblemished. She looked into Inuyasha's eyes, hidden behind black sunglasses. "Inuyasha?"
The demon clutched her tighter. "Mate." He gasped out, grunting when another wave hit him. Kagome felt at a loss on what to do.
"Ano is he ok?" Eri voiced out, frowning.
"Do we need to call someone Kagome?" Yuka asked while Ayumi looked on concernedly.
Kagome shook her head, trying not to panic. "I better get him home guys." She turned to her friends. "Sorry about this."
"Iie it's ok Kagome, we understand." Ayumi said while the others nodded. "Hope he gets well soon."
Kagome opened her mouth to thank her friends but a loud 'tring' cut her off.
"Higurashi!"
'Oh crap, please don't let it be who I think it is!' the raven haired girl thought as she slowly turned to the voice that called her. She grimaced when her fears were confirmed. "Hojo-kun."
"Uh-oh." Eri whispered to Yuka. "This is bad."
Hojo brought his bike to a stop before the slowly panicking girl and gave her a wide smile, pushing his windswept brown hair off his face. "I was looking for you." He spotted Kagome's family nearby and gave a small bow. "Goodevening." That was when he saw the kneeling demon. "Er…who's that?"
Kagome was sweating bullets when she saw the demon sniff at the newcomer, the scowl on his face telling her that he disliked what he smelled. She hastily put what she hoped was a calming hand on the growling demon. "Ah t-this is—
"He's a family friend." Mama helped her out. "He came to visit us…from…"
"America!" Souta piqued in. When the others looked at him he shrugged.
"Yes America." Kagome nodded, laughing nervously.
"Ah so Kagome's boyfriend is half-American." Eri whispered excitedly.
"Isn't that cool?" Yuka whisper-squealed.
"But why didn't she tell Hojo-kun that he is her boyfriend." Ayumi asked, scrunching up her brow.
"Aho!" Eri scolded lightly. "It's cause she doesn't want to hurt his feelings in front of us all. She'll tell him some other time in private."
Hojo blinked down at the man who seemed to pin him down with a look of apparent dislike. He shook his head, maybe he was imagining it. He smiled and held out his hand. "I'm Hojo, Higurashi's classmate. Nice to meet you."
The demon just stared at the outstretched hand before he keh'd and turned away. Kagome sweatdropped. "Sorry Hojo-kun, he's…not feeling well right now. I better get him home."
"Oh I see." Hojo said, dropping his hand. He suddenly snapped his fingers. "Ah I have the perfect remedy!" Rummaging in his bag he pulled out a small parcel. "I wanted to give this to you. They are dried herbal leaves. Have them with a glass of warm milk and all your sickness will go away!" he said cheerfully.
Yuka and the others sweatdropped. "Hojo-kun is the same as always."
Kagome laughed nervously as she accepted the package. "Ah t-thanks Hojo-kun. See you later then."
"Wait Higurashi." Hojo called out, blushing lightly. "Ano are you free this Saturday?"
Kagome gaped at him. 'Was he asking her out? Now!?' Her friends seemed to think the same thing because they immediately latched themselves onto the boy.
"We are free that day Hojo-kun!"
"Yeah you want to go see a movie? I heard there's a new action film out."
"Ah we can go to the mall after that ne?"
"Er…no I…"
Yuka gave her a wink that said "Go on Kagome." Kagome nodded her thanks. "Come on Inuyasha, let's go."
The demon didn't budge. He glared intently at his mate, or rather at the package his mate held. He stood and went up to her, pain forgotten, and snatched the parcel. He thrust it back onto the brown-haired boy's chest. "Don't need it." He growled.
"Eh?" Hojo blinked. "You don't need it."
The demon shook his head.
"But it's really effective. You should try it family-friend-kun."
The demon growled, but another wave of pain hit him and he cried out, falling to his knees. "Inuyasha!" Kagome, Mama and Souta were by him in a blink. "Kagome dear we should get him home fast." Kagome nodded at her mother and helped Inuyasha stand, but his legs gave off and he pulled her down with him.
"Here I'll help Higurashi." Hojo offered, coming over to the demon's other side and lifting his hand. Inuyasha growled warningly.
"Ano Hojo-kun, that's not necessar—" She watched terrified as the demon flung off the other boy, causing him to hit his bike and topple over. Everybody gasped. "Oh my God Hojo-kun, are you ok?" Kagome asked worriedly.
Hojo sat up groggily and rubbed his neck. "Yeah I'm ok." Kagome held out her hand for him to take.
Demon Inuyasha saw red when he saw the other human take his mate's hand. How dare that bastard touch something that belonged to him?! He'd show him that Kagome was his! He'd put a claim on her so that no other male would dare approach her! Ignoring the near blinding pain he wrenched Kagome away from the other and pulled her close. Kagome opened her mouth but he prevented her from saying anything by sealing her lips with his.
And then time stopped.
XxxsplitpersonalityxxX
He was floating.
The demon opened his eyes only to close them immediately. It was all too bright! He sniffed around, but he smelled no familiar scent. Frowning, he opened his eyes a crack, letting them adjust to the brightness before opening them wider. He didn't know where he was, the entire area was bright as if completely engulfed in sunlight. No one was around. He was all alone. He winced when he felt a stab of pain on his chest. Looking down his red eyes widened when he saw a long silver chain dangling from a spot right above his heart. He pulled at it experimentally, not liking the extra dangling weight.
The stab of pain pulsed and spread through his entire body. The demon growled as he felt the light grow brighter and seemed to scorch his skin. He snarled and flexed his claws. Maybe there was an enemy around. Enemy. Immediately that brown-haired kid, Hobo something's face came to his mind. He growled again, claws itching to rip the boy to shreds. He dared to touch Kagome, his mate! Kagome was not his to have, Kagome belonged to the demon.
The pain intensified and the place where the chain touched his chest seemed to burn. But the demon ignored it. Instead he focused on creative ways to kill the puny human kid. Kagome deserved far better than any of these petty humans. Petty humans like his own human half. The demon snorted. His human half and the Hobo-boy were the same, both equally pathetic and useless. Kagome had no need for his human side; in fact she should let him kill him off. He was just an eyesore, unable to protect his girl and putting his friends in danger. To think he and the demon were once the same being, it was a disgrace. His human half was a disgrace.
The light brightened some more and the demon snarled irritated. This was getting annoying. And the pain was increasing as well. He was a full blooded demon so he could handle any pain but it still annoyed him. He grasped the chain again and tugged at it confused. He blinked when the pain seemed to lessen each time he tugged it. Inuyasha growled and tugged harder.
'Don't remove it!'
He blinked at the voice that came out of nowhere. It sounded familiar but he didn't know who it belonged to. The demon shrugged and tugged at the chain again.
'Bear the pain for a while. It will get better. Don't remove the chain!' Inuyasha growled at the commandingly pleading voice. He was a demon; he took orders from no one. No sooner had he thought that when the surrounding light grew too bright that it hurt his eyes. The demon snarled, covering his eyes with his hands. Squinting, he looked around and spotted a large door, painted bright red, to his left. Perhaps that was the exit. Inuyasha moved to the door but the chain prevented him from reaching it. Growling he grasped the chain, intending to wrench it off.
'Don't! You'll regret it!' Regret? Keh. He was a demon, a proud demon. There is nothing that he would regret, ever. Ignoring the disembodied voice's pleadings, he tightened his hold on the chain and pulled it clean off his chest. Immediately the pain dissipated and he slashed the door open with his claws, running straight into the darkness beyond it.

"Ne Miroku, you really think that will happen?"
"Hm? What will Shippo?"
"That Inuyasha will never become a hanyou again."
"Ah that. I'm not really sure. But that would be an amusing turn of events."
"Miroku! I can't believe you are looking forward for such a thing!"
"But Sango dear, wouldn't it be fun to see both the human and demon slowly realize their true feelings for Kagome-sama?"
"No it wouldn't! It would be cruel to Kagome-chan! She can barely control them as it is."
"Hm it may be a little harsh. But that makes it all the more fun."
"…you're a sadist Miroku."
"And a hentai!"
Miroku laughed at the glare Sango gave him as they continued walking through the forest. He had said the truth. He was kind of looking forward to see what would happen to both Inuyashas from now. Besides he had a feeling that openly battling it out with each other will help the two halves of the hanyou come to a conclusion about their feelings. And the monk could have a little fun with them while that happens. He chuckled at the thought.
"I wonder if Inuyasha found a way to cross over to Kagome-chan's time." Sango wondered as they made their way to the bone eater's well. "He's taken the jewel shard with him after all. Maybe he activated the well."
"He's probably jumping in and out like an idiot again." Shippo said, yawning widely.
"I wouldn't put it past him to do that." Miroku said, as he waded through the thick bushes that led to the clearing. "It's surprising he stayed put so long considering—
"Miroku look!"
Blinking at Sango's gasp the monk turned to look at where she was pointing and gasped himself. Human Inuyasha was lying face down before the well, unmoving, with the jewel shard peeking out from his closed fist.
"Oh shit!" Miroku muttered as they ran towards their fallen friend.
XxxsplitpersonalityxxX
To say Kagome was shocked would be an understatement. Her entire body froze and she felt numb, only the tingling sensation on her lips telling her that she was alive. The tingling sensation that was caused by the demon's warm lips on hers. The warmth travelled through her body, slowly reviving her other senses and she heard the soft gasp let out by her friends. That snapped her out. Squirming, she brought her hands up to the demon's chest, silently begging him to release her. He did and she took in a much needed gulp of air. "Inuyasha wha—
"Kagome."
The soft whisper of her name shocked her more than the unexpected kiss. Her eyes snapped up to meet the demon's blood red ones, barely hidden behind the sunglasses and alive with passion as he let them roam over her slightly reddened lips. Demon Inuyasha called her name! He called her Kagome!
"Kagome." The demon smirked, cupping her face and brushing his thumb on her lips. "My mate."
"Inu…"
"Uwaa he looks completely healed now!" Squeal.
"That was some treatment Kagome!" Wink.
"As expected of my daughter." Giggle.
"Boy this is awkward." Deadpan.
Kagome turned to watch her family and friends smile at her, their blush mirroring hers. Well, at least Hojo looked as shocked as she felt.
"It's ok Hojo-kun." Ayumi comforted, patting the frozen boy's shoulder. "You were bound to know someday."
"But…but…"
Kagome moved to look at Inuyasha when a sudden pulse of power hit her. She gasped. It was the sacred jewel shard. But how was she sensing it from her world. She focused some more and sure enough, another steady pulse hit her. It was definitely the sacred jewel shard. That must mean the well was working! She turned to her mother. "Mama I have to go." She hesitated. "I…the well…"
Mama stared at her a while before nodding. "I understand. Go, I'll take care of things here." Kagome gave her a nod before running towards her home, demon Inuyasha in tow.
"Wait Kagome!"
"Kagome!"
Kagome turned to see her mother cook up some lies to convince her friends. 'Sorry guys. Sorry Hojo-kun.' She yelped when the demon took her in his arms and practically flew off. They reached the shrine and the well house in no time and Kagome could feel the jewel's power floating up to her along with something else, a faint yell that sounded like…Human Inuyasha's voice. Behind her Demon Inuyasha chuckled, red eyes gleaming in amusement. Kagome pushed the well house door and gasped at the pink light that emanated from the well. How was it possible? She thought, walking up to the well. They had lost all their shards to Kagura. She started when another yell sounded, this time a little more clearly and she was able to understand the words.
They seemed to say "I'll kill you bastard."
"…huh?"
A snort sounded from behind her, diverting her attention. "It seems that he has also awakened." Demon Inuyasha smirked.
Kagome turned to stare at him. He was speaking full sentences! But more importantly "What are you talking about Inuyasha?"
The demon's smirk widened. "Step aside mate." He flexed his claws. "I have a human to kill."

"Inuyasha! Inuyasha!"
"Ugh…"
Human Inuyasha groaned at the near panicking voices around him. Slowly cracking his eyes open, he saw three blurred figures looking down at him. He blinked twice and his vision cleared. "Miroku? Sango?" he rasped out. "Shippo? What're you guys doing here?"
"We came to check up on you and found you out cold." Shippo said, watching as the latter groggily sat up.
"What happened Inuyasha?" Sango asked concerned. "Did someone attack you?"
Inuyasha shook his head. "No I…there was this light and…" He looked at his hand, clenching and unclenching it before turning to the others. "You guys came to look for me?" When they nodded he smiled slightly, looking back at his hand. "Thanks."
The other three blinked before sharing a look. 'Did he just say thanks?' "Inuyasha are you…ok?"
The human looked up at the slayer before barking out a laugh. "Ok? I feel more than ok. I feel great!" he exclaimed, dark purple eyes shining. "I've never felt better!"
The other three shared another look. 'O…kay he's definitely not ok!'
Inuyasha continued, oblivious of his friends' reactions. "I don't know why but I feel lighter, like something big was lifted off of me. I feel changed." He suddenly grasped a lock of hair. "Has my hair always been this black when I turn human?" He asked Miroku.
The monk raised one eyebrow. "Uh…yeah." He said cautiously. Inuyasha grinned, eyes shining. "It's great! It looks better this way." His eyes softened. "Bet Kagome would love it more now."
Miroku resisted the urge to check his friend's forehead to see if he was having a fever. He was acting weird! "Inuyasha are you sure you're ok?"
The human scoffed at his friend. "Miroku trust me, I've never felt more ok in my life. I dunno, I feel like I've finally become what I'm meant to be. I feel more complete now as a human than I could ever feel as a hanyou." He stated seriously.
His friends blinked at him. Inuyasha, the proud hanyou, who wanted to become an even prouder demon, was saying he felt better in his human form? "Could this be what Tokichi-san talked about?" Sango whisper-asked to Miroku.
The monk shrugged slightly. "Could be. He is acting a lot different from before." Turning to his human friend he asked. "So basically, you are saying you don't regret losing your demon powers?"
"Demon powers?" Inuyasha scoffed, giving his friend a disgusted look. "Keh. I can't believe I had something that vile in me in the first place."
His friends stared at him. This was definitely weird! "Vile huh? You seem to really hate demons now Inuyasha." Miroku said.
"Not demons Miroku, demon." The human growled out, clenching his teeth. "There's only one demon that I hate. The bastard that's stuck in the future with my Kagome." He fisted his hand, yelping when a sudden pain shot up. Opening his palm he, along with the others, stared at the shard of the sacred jewel that seemed to glow brightly. "What's going on?" Shippo asked, as the shard began to pulse slightly. "Inuyasha what did you do?" Sango asked.
"Nothing, I was just holding it!"
They watched as the shard slowly floated from Inuyasha's hand and hovered over the well. It suddenly dropped inside, its pink light flooding up the well. Inuyasha and the others scrambled to their feet and leaned over the well's rim, squinting at the light.
"You think the well's opened up?" Sango asked the monk.
Miroku shrugged again. "No idea, maybe Kagome-sama's power activated it again?"
"Kagome!" Inuyasha yelled into the well. "Kagome can you hear me?"
"Inuyasha can you see her?" Shippo asked him. The human shook his head.
"No but—" he froze when a low chuckle reached his ears. He growled, recognizing it. "That damn demon!" he snarled before yelling. "I'll kill you bastard!" He moved to jump down the well when Miroku pulled him back. "What the hell are you talking about idiot? There's no one in there."
"Let go Miroku!" Inuyasha struggled against the monk's grip. He froze again when a deep cold voice sounded, and this time they all heard what it said.
"Step aside mate. I have a human to kill."
There was a 'boom' and the well's rim cracked as three slashes sliced upwards from inside it. Inuyasha and the other's jumped back, coughing as the cloud of dust assaulted their senses. Blinking away the sand they watched as a familiar silhouette emerged out of the dusty fog, fanged mouth lifted in a smirk.
"I see you are still alive." Demon Inuyasha scoffed at his human counterpart. "Such a shame."
Human Inuyasha smirked back. "Took you long enough to get here teme. Did you lose your way inside the well?" he countered.
Miroku and the others gaped as both Inuyashas sized each other up. "Figures Human Inuyasha is not the only one who changed." Sango said, eyeing the demon.
"Yeah the demon's actually speaking full sentences now!" Shippo observed. He 'eeped' when the demon suddenly turned to him.
"Kit." He said, eyes narrowed in distaste. "Do not talk of this Inuyasha so lightly."
The other three sweatdropped. "And now he's talking like Sesshoumaru." Miroku deadpanned.
"You sure talk big for a bastard demon." Human Inuyasha snorted. "Don't act like you're some kind of royalty you jackass."
The demon turned to him with a scoff. "Your insults are as pathetic as you are." He said calmly. "You would sound better when dead." He smirked.
Human Inuyasha grit his teeth. "Shut up bastard, like I'll let you kill me!" he yelled, placing a hand on his sword.
Demon Inuyasha crouched, claws extended and fangs bared. "I require no permission of yours human." He snarled back. "I will enjoy ripping you apart."
"Ano." Shippo tugged at Miroku's robes as the two Inuyashas continued to snarl and throw death threats at each other. "Shouldn't we stop them Miroku?"
"And miss out on the fun? No way." The monk grinned.
"But they're gonna kill each other!" Sango exclaimed.
Miroku 'tsk'ed at her. "I don't think that will happen Sango my love—
"I'll kill you demon bastard!"
"Die pathetic human!"
Miroku blinked. "Or maybe it will."
They watched horrified as both halves of their hanyou friend rushed at each other with feral war cries, well Human Inuyasha gave out a cry while Demon Inuyasha growled. They were, however, surprised when the two beings suddenly stopped midway and turned to the well, one sniffing while the other listened intently.
"Uff!" Kagome hoisted herself halfway out of the well's mouth, panting slightly. "It gets more difficult every time." She looked at the jewel shard clutched in her hand and turned to the crowd outside. "Why is there a jewel shard inside the well? Wait more importantly, what the hell is going on!?"
Demon Inuyasha was immediately by her side, helping her up. "Mate." He whispered, caressing her cheek.
Kagome almost gave into his touch when she remembered the kiss they'd shared. Blushing, she immediately moved away. "I-inuyasha wait! What is happening? Why are you acting so weird? I mean, I know you have been kind of touchy-feely since you turned demon but that…t-that was r-really—
"Kagome."
Kagome stopped talking when she heard Human Inuyasha call out her name. Turning she saw him standing a few feet away, looking at her intently. "Inuyasha!" she gasped, running up to him and patting him for any injuries. "Oh God, are you ok? I was so scared when the well sealed up, I thought something happened to you and then your demon half got stuck with me and I—" she was cut off once again when the latter enveloped her in a tight hug, squeezing her to his chest. "Inuyasha?"
"I'm so glad you are safe." His whisper against her neck sent a shiver down her spine. Kagome blushed. "I'm glad you're safe too." She whispered back.
"Let go of my mate now, human."
Human Inuyasha looked up to see the demon snarl at him. He smirked. "Your mate?" he scoffed, pushing Kagome behind him. "Kagome is my woman. Get it through your stupid head demon!"
Kagome blinked. "Huh?"
The demon growled. "She belongs to me. A good for nothing human like you cannot protect her."
"Speak for yourself mutt!" the human hissed back. "I can take care of Kagome just fine."
"Wait…you two…" Kagome frowned, confused. "What's going on?"
"They're fighting over you of course."
Kagome turned to see the rest of the audience. "Miroku-sama, Sango-chan, Shippo-chan." She frowned at them. "What do you mean fighting over me?"
Sango sighed. "Kagome-chan, when Demon Inuyasha passed over to your time with you, something happened and it pulled him and the human further apart."
Kagome blinked. "Pulled them apart?" Sango nodded. "But how?"
"The five hundred year gap." Miroku replied. "Basically the demon half got trapped five hundred years into the future while the human stayed in the past. The difference in the ages led them to turn out like this." He gestured to the death-threats-exchanging duo.
Kagome scowled. "So they are fighting over me…because of this gap?"
"Well, yes and no." Miroku said. "They are fighting over you since they now possess individual desires for you." When the schoolgirl gave him a confused look he elaborated. "The feelings Inuyasha had for you are no longer that of a hanyou's, it's now separated into that of a human's and that of a demon's. Simply put, you are now caught up in a love triangle with them."
Kagome gaped at the monk. "But it was like this before too! They would fight over who got to stay with me and stuff. Why does it feel a lot more intense now? And…why do they seem like they've changed?"
"Because unlike before, they now fight with the intent to kill." Miroku explained. Kagome's eyes widened. "The link that bound them together, the original hanyou's feelings no longer exist. Normally it would take a long time for the link to disappear and their individual personalities to completely take over but since both demon and human were separated by the time gap the process was accelerated. Right now, there is not an ounce of Hanyou Inuyasha's personality or feelings inside either of them." He said gravely.
"This was what Tokichi had warned us about when he said that they shouldn't stay separated for long." Sango said. "He feels that Inuyasha can never return to being a hanyou again."
Kagome opened her mouth but no words came out as Sango's words sunk in. Inuyasha would never turn hanyou again? How could that happen?
"But on the bright side you get to know which half harbours more feelings for you." Miroku said cheerfully.
"What part of that is the bright side Miroku-sama no baka!" Kagome yelled at him, furious.
"Mate." Demon Inuyasha beckoned. "Come here, to my side."
"Like hell she will." Human Inuyasha snarled at him, pushing Kagome further behind. "And stop calling her mate. She's not your mate!"
"Inuyasha stop taunting him." Kagome caught at the human's sleeve. "He could kill you, you know."
"Keh, I'd like to see him try." Human Inuyasha turned to the schoolgirl. "He can't put his claim on you Kagome, you are my woman."
Kagome blushed and punched his shoulder. "Would you stop saying weird stuff like that? We need to find a way to get both of you back together so—
"This is not weird, this is how I feel about you." The human yelled at her. "I like you Kagome!"
Stunned silence followed his declaration. Kagome gaped at him with wide unbelieving eyes. "W-what?"
"I like you." Human Inuyasha said softly, caressing her cheek with his thumb. "Be mine."
"Don't touch my mate!" the demon snarled.
"She's not your mate." The human whispered as he covered the miko's lips with his, effectively cutting off further argument.
"Wow. Haven't seen that lip action in a while." Miroku smirked as he watched his human friend make out with the schoolgirl. "Oh look he's using his tongue. Wonder where he learnt that."
"Could you shut up that perverted mouth for once Miroku?" Sango hissed at him, trying, and failing, not to blush. Miroku chuckled.
"Sorry Sango dear, couldn't resist. Ah Shippo, close your eyes, this could scar you for life."
"Hey, leggo Miroku!"
Kagome felt her senses go numb for the second time that day. Twice she was kissed by the hanyou she loved, though it wasn't the hanyou that did the kissing. She gasped lightly when Inuyasha's warmth tongue shyly touched her lower lip, causing him to plunge deeper. Before she could react, the warmth suddenly lifted off of her and she blinked to see Demon Inuyasha hoist the human up by his neck.
"You dare touch her, filthy human scum!" the demon hissed, his free hand with its claws extended flexing dangerously.
Human Inuyasha laughed, trying hard not to choke on the hand squeezing his throat. "Don't treat me lightly demon. You're not the only one with a weapon." He whipped out his sword and slashed at the surprised demon, forcing the latter to drop him and step back. Everyone gaped as Human Inuyasha pointed Tessaiga at the demon, the blade revived to its former battling glory. "Not so weak now, am I?"
"The Tessaiga is big again!" Shippo exclaimed.
"How did that happen?" Sango gasped. "Inuyasha could only use it in his hanyou form right?"
Miroku nodded, eyeing the large sword. "It could be because of his ardent desire to keep the demon away from Kagome. Tessaiga reacts to his feelings, but it does not let demons touch it, with the exception of Inuyasha's father. I guess even as a hanyou, it reacted more to his human nature."
"Then why was he unable to use it before in his human form?" Shippo asked.
"That was because…" Miroku stared at the kitsune for a few seconds before giving a sheepish smile. "I have no idea why." Shippo sweatdropped.
"Inuyasha stop!" Kagome cried out. "Stop this right now, both of you!"
Human Inuyasha ignored her. "You make one move towards Kagome and I'll Kaze no Kizu your ass to the afterlife!" he hissed at the demon.
Demon Inuyasha eyed the Tessaiga warily before smirking. He brought his hand to his face and licked at a claw. "Don't look down on me human, you will regret it." Smirking, he rushed at the human..
Kagome watched horrified as the two began to battle it out, ignoring everyone around them. Human Inuyasha swung the blade, causing the wind scar to slice up the ground as it advanced at the demon. Demon Inuyasha dodged it by a hair breadth, digging his claws into his palm and retaliating with a Senkon Tessou that the human narrowly escaped. She had to stop them but how? She didn't want to sit either of them but in this situation there was nothing else she could do. Taking a deep breath, she was about to say the word when Sango stopped her.
"Don't Kagome-chan. Sitting them at this point would be dangerous." The slayer warned her friend. "Not to mention Demon Inuyasha won't take lightly to it. Demons have huge pride issues and forcing him to submit to your command would be a mortal hit to his pride that he won't let go. He could hurt you in anger."
"But what else can I do Sango-chan." Kagome cried out, tears pooling at her eyes. "At this rate one of them will end up killing the other!"
"Don't worry, Miroku will stop them."
"KAZANA!"
The strong blast of wind momentarily disoriented the fighting duo as they struggled not to get sucked into the eternal vortex. Miroku regarding them with hooded eyes and closed his fist, effectively shutting the wind tunnel. "As much as I hate to disrupt the amusing display of muscle power and swordsmanship, neither of you would be much good to us dead. So I suggest you both lay off the fighting for a while till we find a way to resolve things." When the other two raised their eyebrows at him he deadpanned. "Seriously, stop fighting. I won't hesitate to use the wind tunnel on you." He opened his fist slightly. "I'm serious." When they continued to stare at him incredulously he sighed. "You're upsetting Kagome-sama you idiots."
Immediately both Inuyashas were by the sniffling miko's side. "Kagome!" "Mate!" Kagome blinked up at them through her tears and they felt their heart clench.
"What's the matter Kagome?" Human Inuyasha put a hand on her shoulder. He turned to scowl at the demon. "Did this bastard upset you? I'll rip his head off!"
"Don't touch her human, you're distressing her further." Demon Inuyasha snarled, swatting off the other's hand.
"Would you two stop it!?" Kagome stomped her foot. "All this crap about getting separated and losing your hanyou selves! You both are two halves of the same being so get along with each other for Kami's sake!"
Both Inuyashas stared at her before averting their eyes. "There is no way this Inuyasha will associate himself with a filthy mortal as this one." The demon stated, pointing at his human.
"The same goes for me you fucking mutt!" The human countered with a snarl. Kagome sighed and rubbed her head. This was getting old.
"I know a way you can resolve your differences without trying to kill each other off." Miroku said cheerily. The others turned to stare at him.
"And what's that?" Kagome asked hopefully.
Miroku gave her an overly cheerful smile before turning to the other two. "Convince Kagome-sama which one of you likes her better. If she chooses one of you, then the other will automatically disappear."
The miko and the two Inuyashas stared at the monk for a while. "What!?" Kagome asked, aghast. "What!?"
"It's our best bet right now Kagome-chan." Sango whispered into her ear. "If we don't do this they really will fight each other until one of them is dead. This way you can keep them disciplined and convince them that you like them better as a hanyou."
Kagome turned to her friend. It really was a good plan to convince the two Inuyashas to get along. But still. "Sango-chan…"
"Don't worry; right now they are so centered on you so they won't dream of hurting you." Sango assured her. Kagome shook her head. "It's not really the hurting me part that I'm worried about."
"Ask mate to choose?" Demon Inuyasha asked, one eyebrow raised. "Mate has already chosen me, there is no need for this human scum to linger any further." He scoffed.
"Like hell she has!" Human Inuyasha snarled back. "If there's any Kagome wants by her side it would be me. She doesn't need a demon like you near her."
"Ah it's not something you both can decide on." Miroku tsked. "You both want Kagome-sama so it's up to her to decide who gets to stay and who doesn't." he turned to give the miko a grin. "No pressure though."
The demon turned to the miko. "Mate?" he questioned. "You doubt this Inuyasha's affections?"
"Er…that's not it I—
"Kagome!" Human Inuyasha exclaimed. "You know what I feel for you is true right?"
"I-I do…but er…"
She was trapped! But she had to admit, it was a good plan. Already both Inuyashas had forgotten their animosity as they stared at her intently. She just had to play along, convince them both that it was the hanyou that she liked and that would get them together. She'd just have to endure a little harmless flirting. It wouldn't be that bad. Steeling her resolve she nodded. "Miroku is right. I won't accept you both fighting and killing each other over me. You will have to prove your affections to me otherwise."
Demon Inuyasha regarded the nervous miko for a while before sighing. "If mate wishes me to court her then so be it." He gave her a sensual smile that caused a pleasing shiver to wash over her. "I shall make her forget this filthy human even existed."
"You can try demon jerk." Human Inuyasha scowled at him, before giving Kagome a grin that made her blush. "You're the one who'll be forgotten. Kagome knows she loves me best."
Kagome turned to her friends who were looking at her with different expressions; Sango looked sympathetic, Shippo looked curiously excited and Miroku was downright amused. She turned to the two Inuyashas who looked at her eagerly, as if they couldn't wait to get started on, she blushed, 'courting' her. It couldn't be that bad, she told herself. It would be just like when they fought over her before, albeit a bit more intense now, but she could handle a little courting. It can't be that bad.
Who was she kidding? She gulped. She was so screwed!

Kagura sighed as she made her way through the dark hallway of the castle. She really didn't want to see him but she didn't have a choice. The sooner she gave him the jewel shards the sooner she could leave.
"Kagura."
Kagura would have shrieked had she not expected the bastard to sneak up on her. Instead she calmly turned around, one eyebrow raised. "What's the matter Naraku, got tired of waiting?"
Naraku merely smirked and held out his hand. "The jewel shards Kagura. I don't have time to waste."
Kagura 'tsk'ed as she handed over the shards. "You better have a good plan up your sleeve this time. It wasn't easy getting these." She turned to leave.
"You'll know of the plan when it's ready." Naraku scowled at the shards. "There is one missing."
Kagura stopped and looked over her shoulder. "Huh. Must have fallen off when I broke the bottle. Oops." She shrugged, turning to the door again.
Naraku turned to stare at the obviously-hurrying-away wind demon. "You seem to be in a rush to get away from me Kagura." He smirked. "Are you hiding something?"
Kagura turned again to give him a nonchalant look, not betraying the panic she felt inside. "There's nothing to hide. If you have no further work for me then there's no point in me sticking around."
Naraku chuckled evilly. "Indeed. There is no point if you decide to hide anything; I'll find it out anyway." His eyes gleamed wickedly. "Don't leave the castle yet. There is one more thing I want you to do."
Kagura stared at him a bit before nodding and leaving the room. "Whatever." She knew she should tell him what she saw back at the forest where she'd attacked Kagome's group, but she wanted to keep that piece of information to herself. She had a feeling that she could make use of Inuyasha's separated state to her own need, and maybe, just maybe, they could be the ticket to her freedom.
Lost in her thoughts, the wind demon didn't notice the amusedly curious smirk that spread across Naraku's lips.

A/N: And cut! Personally I think this was a bit rushed since I wanted to jump into the plot soon but meh, hope you liked it anyway *grin*
I'm guessing a lot of people will have questions regarding the changes in both Demon and Human Inuyasha's characters. I know it is a little OOC but when I imagine a complete human or demon Inuyasha without his hanyou personality overshadowing him this would be how he'd turn out. I've tried to explain it within the story itself but if you have any doubts you'd like cleared feel free to fire away. Also, sorry about the Hojo part being so short, I wanted to focus more on the plot, but I hope you liked a few laughs I put in. This chapter has already gone past the 30 pages limit on MS Word *gah!* so I'll probably put in more Hojo-Inuyasha encounters in the later chapters. You'll have to read on to find out *wink*
Hope you enjoyed both chapters! Things will get really interesting now that both Inuyashas have declared war on each other with Kagome as the prize (poor kid!) *snicker*. And Naraku seems to suspect something too. Yup, things are getting heated up *rubs hands evilly*. If you have any ideas on how to make the two Inuyashas compete for the schoolgirl's affection let me know. I'd love to hear more suggestions! That said I'll see you for the next chapter which I'll try to have out soon. But again, you know me, don't take my word for it *sigh*
Ciao my muffins! Love you! *blows kisses*
Kaijuu signing off.
