Chapter 7 - Burnt Pancakes
I couldn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes flashes of her face appeared. Flashes of the blood, the bodies and those red eyes. I just can't seem to get away from it. I turn on my lamp sitting on my bedside table and the dim light fills my room, chasing the darkness away. I take a few moments to remind myself it isn't real before getting out of bed and going down stairs. I quietly go into the kitchen and pour myself a glass of water. Standing at the sink, I peer out the kitchen window at the golden sky as the sun begins to set. I love watching the sun rise and set but in my busy schedule at the academy it's rare I ever have the time.
I'm surprised to find I'm the first awake this morning. I thought they'd all be up ready to go training and Dad would have to drag me out of bed. I decide to go to the gym early, by myself, to have some time to think and clear my head. I quickly go back to my room and change and then leave towards the gym.
When I arrive it's different from how I remember it. It's been renovated and all the equipment are in different places. I walk over to the punching bags and hit them repeatedly. With each hit I release a little more of my anger, frustration and fear that I feel over my current situation. I don't know what I can do to help and I know my parent won't let me help anyway. I feel helpless and scared, which shouldn't be possible because I'm a Belikov/Hathaway.
"Good morning Nina."
I stopped punching and turned around.
"Matt! Um… hi."
"You're up early." He walked from the door until he was standing arm's length away.
"Well actually I was just leaving. Breakfast should be ready at home and Mum will be angry if I miss her attempt at pancakes." I told him and stepped past him, heading towards the door.
"Well, I'd like it if we could catch up later, I think we should talk."
"Um, maybe. I think I will be pretty busy all day."
"Tomorrow perhaps?"
"I don't know, we'll see." I said and dashed out the door.
The sun was completely gone now and the air had a chill to it. I have no idea what I'm going to do about Matt. I can't avoid him forever and I can't be around him. I just need to know exactly what to say to him, say it and be done with it… with him. He can't be in my life, I can't trust him, I don't trust him. He could be working with her, he could even be leading this plot against me right under my nose and I wouldn't know. So, I will talk to Lissa and get her to post him elsewhere, the other side of the world would be best. The more distance between us the better.
I arrived back at home to the smell of something burning and the sound of smoke detectors. Yeah… Mum cooked. I went inside to find Dad laughing as Mum frantically tries wave a tea towel under the smoke alarm. Ivan and El are sitting at the table with Dad shaking their heads.
"I see your cooking hasn't improved since I was home last." I said laughing.
"Nina that wasn't very nice, even if it's true." Dad laughed at his little joke and then stood up, "I think I'll cook Roza."
"Fine Comrade, but don't say I never try." Mum threw the towel at him then kissed me on the forehead and sat down next to me.
"So, what did you get up to this morning Nina, sneaking out of the house before everyone was up?" Ivan asked grinning.
"Actually I went to the gym, thank you very much. I had a lovely morning punching things will imagining they were you." I grinned back, sticking my tongue out as well.
"Hey! I imagine staking you, so I don't really…"
"Ivan! That's enough! Both of you be nice." Mum said, hitting us both on the back of the head.
"Can we go shopping today? Pleeeease?" Jelena battered her eyelids as she pleaded with Mum.
"I guess so. We can leave after breakfast and be back in time to get ready for the party tonight." Mum told her.
"What party?" I asked
"Oh Lissa is throwing some fancy dinner party at her house with all our friends." Dad explained.
"Well I don't really have anything fancy to wear. I'll have to buy something today." I said.
After Dad's unburnt pancakes for breakfast we left to the mall where I bought a range of dresses to choose from for tonight. No doubt I'll be at court for a while and you can never have enough dresses here, especially when your parents are head of the Royal Guard and you have a queen for an aunt.
Getting ready for the party was easy, seeing as I only did light makeup and left my hair out naturally. I had time to help Jelena with her hair. I braided it softly to the side, leaving little curls out to frame her face. She only wore mascara and lip gloss. Mum wore her's in a messy but styled bun. Dad and Ivan both wore suits with their hair out.
The diner was great and it was fun catching up with all the happenings at court. Aunty Jill gave me a new Eiffel Tower charm for my bracelet and Jelena a leaning Tower of Pizza for hers as gifts from her travels round Europe. We started saying our goodbyes and were all getting ready to leave when a gun fired…
