I don't own RotG
The memory changed to the middle of winter, Jack was walking through town to get to Evienne's house, skates sung over his shoulder and Emma following excitedly after him. Upon arrival on her doorstep he knocked on the door and sat back with a small smile on his face. For once her mother was not the one to answer the door and a surprised Evienne greeted him. "Jack, what are you doing here?" She asked looking over her shoulder and Emma.
"We wanted to invite you to go ice skating with us." Jack explained showing her the three pairs of skates.
"I am afraid I do not know how to ice skate." She said nervously.
"I will teach you then." Jack decided and grabbed her arm.
"Wait," She said causing Jack to come to a stop, "If you must drag me along at least allow me to get a cloak." She said prying her arm free of Jack's grasp and walking back into her house. Jack and Emma waited outside patiently for her to come back out for a moment before Jack began knocking on the door again.
"Calm down Jack!" Came an aggravated shout from inside the house and moments later Evienne came back out wearing a brown cloak that ended just before her feet. Jack offered her his arm with a grin and she rolled her eyes and took the offer graciously holding out her own hand for Emma to grab on to.
Upon arrival at the lake, Emma quickly put on her skates and set off onto the lake and Jack sat be Evienne till she had her skates on. He helped her to her feet and lead her to the lake where the second both her feet were on the ice she fell over. Jack laughed and helped her stand before wrapping his arm around her waist and guiding her along the ice. Though her unsteady balance kept knocking them both off slightly but Jack would correct the situation before they fell. "Don't worry I wont let you fall." Jack laughed into her ear, "I promise." And to his word he kept her from falling, at least for a while that is. After about half an hour of leading her around the ice her foot slipped out from beneath her and she fell over, dragging Jack right on top of her.
Jack laughed at her blush before sitting up off of her, "I do not think that I have ever met someone who is so terrible at skating." He said, "Even Emma is better than you." He said pointing to his sister who had not fallen once and seemed oblivious to the two teens.
"Must have had a better teacher then." Evienne shot back.
"I taught her." Jack cockily responded getting to his feet and holding a hand out to the girl.
Evienne eyed his hand before placing her own in his, "I don't believe that." She said when he had hauled her to her feet.
Jack raised his hand to over his heart and scoffed, "You wound me my lady."
"Good." She laughed before grabbing his arm to stop herself from falling, "You let me fall."
Jack rolled his eyes and continued to lead the girl in a slow turn around the ice, eventually he noticed that her weight was no longer resting on him and he slowly moved his arm from around her waist. She hardly noticed as she focused on skating, only realizing Jack was no longer keeping her up when she felt his hand slip into her own. She looked to him with a smile and he laughed, "See? Skating isn't that hard." He said right before he himself slipped and fell onto his back, his groans drowned out by the two girls laughter.
"Smooth." Bunny said.
"Shut up." Jack responded watching as the memories shifted again.
Jack sat beside Evienne watching the play with boredom, shooting glances to across the way where the younger children sat laughing at the antics of one of the younger boys. A smile spread over his face as he saw Emma laughing along with her friends. He glanced back at his parents and Evienne and slowly stood and slipped away towards the other group. He stopped and grabbed one of the props that the players had left out, being antlers, and proceeded to the children where he started walking around with the antlers to his head and making noises that sounded like a moose.
Emma laughed and jumped up and down, "You're funny Jack." She laughed as Jack walked up on the stage continuing his noises.
"If I may," Evienne's voice popped up and Jack stopped with a nervous expression turning to look at the girl, "That is the noise of a moose and those are deer antlers." She said with a fond smile, sitting down on a barrel and nodding her head for him to continue. He smiled brightly at her before continuing on with his little show.
"I know what this." Tooth said excitedly, "This is the towns fall harvest festival. Oh the fairies and I used to love to watch this," She said dreamily, "It was a week of celebrations, including performances by the players, and the lighting of the lanterns held on the last night. Oh it was always so beautiful." She thought for a moment before speaking again, "If I am correct this is the end of the first night, the Players night." The others looked at the fairy queen with fondness before turning back to the memories.
After Jack had finished with his show he gave a great bow before walking down and sitting next to Evienne, allowing the original performer to take his place back on stage. "Why so nervous Jack?" The girl asked leaning into his shoulder.
Jack let out a small laugh, "Well, you do always tell me to grow up." He responded rubbing his neck and looking away.
Evienne looked back at him with another fond smile and laughed, "That was a year ago." She said grabbing Jack's chin, "Growing up does not mean stop having fun." She explained drawing Jack's gaze back to her, "Your fun-loving spirit is why I fell in love with you in the first place, I don't ever wish for you to lose it. I simply wish for you to take responsibility in your life." She said before kissing his cheek. A blushing Jack smiled back at her and turned back to the player on stage, ignoring his sisters laughing face.
The scene flicked to Jack sitting at a bench staring meticulously at something in his hands. The sudden sound of someone clearing his throat behind causing him to whirl around and stare at his father standing in the doorway. "Jackson, you should be enjoying the festivities." He said walking up to his son, "What are you doing inside, we can never get you to do that?" Jack sighed in defeat and held up the item that he was working on, his father smiled and took it from Jack's hands. It was a small hand carved ring with the words "I love you" engraved in neat cursive on it. "A ring? And what might it be for?"
Jack sighed and took the ring back, "I remember when I was younger and you told me the story of how you proposed to Mother. You took her away to the lake on the last night of the Festival and as the lanterns rose into the sky you fell to your knees and asked for her hand." Jack explained, continuing at his fathers nod, "Well, I made that proposal better." He said cockily.
His father laughed and clapped him on the shoulder, "That's my boy!"
Jack smiled and laughed with his dad as he turned back to the table, "I am just trying to get the lettering correct." He explained as he continued fiddling with it.
"She will love it son." His father said, "Now I suppose I should leave you to your craft. You're mother and I will be at the festival." He said before leaving Jack alone.
Jack smiled and continued carving into the ring, barely noticing a soft knock to his door, "Jack?"
His nerves jumped into overdrive when Evienne sounded behind him. He frantically grabbed a rag that was sitting near the wood varnish and threw it over the ring before spinning around and putting his body in front of the desk. "Evienne!" He said with forced excitement, "What are you doing here?" He asked nervously.
Evienne eyed him suspiciously, "I could inquire the same of you." She responded, "Tis the second day of the festival, why are you not out celebrating?"
"I had some business to care for here." Jack explained, nervously walking forward to stop the girl from walking to the desk. He laughed as he put his hands on her shoulders and walked her backwards. "Shall we go celebrate?" He said ignoring her confused expression and grabbing her hand and dragging her out the door.
"Jack, is everything alright?" she asked as she allowed herself to be dragged out of the room.
"Of course." Jack said turning back to her, "I have finished my work and would like to go celebrate, would you not care to join me?"
"I shall." She replied slowly, looking back at the room she was just dragged out of. "But Jackson, what were you working on in there?" She asked walking in step with him.
Jack laughed nervously while rubbing the back of his neck, "Oh nothing." He looked to the girl and knew she didn't buy it but for the moment she let it go. Jack sighed as they joined the rest of the town outside in the festivities.
"Not the best at hiding things." North said thoughtfully, causing Bunny to burst into laughter.
"Why did I bring you guys along again?" Jack asked turning to glare at his companions, "I thought it was for comfort and support but all you have done is made fun of my past self."
North joined Bunny in his laughter and clapped him on the shoulder, "Come now, w are only messing with you."
Jack groaned and looked down to Sandy who had a smile on his face as well. "I hate you all." He concluded before turning back to the memories.
Jack knelt in his room repeatedly pulling out the ring he had made and trying to find the words to use. He groaned and fell back onto his butt after he yet again stumbled through his question. "Why is this so hard?" He asked himself. He groaned again as he stared at the ring, "It should not be this hard." He sat back up on his knee and looked at the space in front of him, "Evienne, I love you and wanted to ask you if…" He sighed, "if you can tell me what to say to do this." He fell backwards and laid on his floor staring up at the ceiling.
"Jackson, is everything alright in here?" His mother asked cracking the door open and looking at her son laying on the ground. "What are you doing?"
"Trying to find the words to propose to Evienne." He sighed, "She is a classy lady and I wish to find the words that will pay tribute to all that she is."
His mother laughed, "Oh son, you simply must speak from your heart, you cannot allow your nerves to taint what will be a beautiful moment." She offered.
"I need a script not advice on my nerves." He said looking up at his mother with an exasperated expression.
His mother sighed, "Try using something she has taught you then?" She asked.
Jack sat up, "That is it." He said, "I will use Shakespeare." He turned to look at his mother, "Thank you mother." He said hugging her before shoving her out the door and closing it. He rushed to the desk in his room and pulled off the book he had borrowed from Evienne, it was The Tempest from Shakespeare. He started flipping through it trying to find a quote that would be sufficient enough for his proposal, stopping at the beginning of act three. He smiled at the book as the memory faded and changed.
Okay, so next chapter will pick up somewhere before Jack proposes. I hope you liked it.
Until next time, the Freak is out of here!
