IMPORTANT NOTICE-1/15/19

Chapter 1-6 have been updated completely. There were significant changes to the story, especially in Chapter 4-5. We highly recommend you to reread.

Authors' Note:

Hi, everyone. We are sorry that we haven't updated in so long. It's been over three years, and there are no excuses for not uploading even once during all this time. Please forgive us.

Here are two notices regarding Doppelgänger:

1. We are planning to finish this fanfiction no matter what.

2. We made many changes to the first six chapters. We hope you will understand this decision. After all these years, we both have changed as writers, and the story feels somewhat foreign to us now.

Along with this update, Melo will be renamed as Jay, and Pisces will be renamed as Redvry. We grew out of our old names.

Lastly, we want to thank everyone for reading our story. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for you all.

-Jay-Redvry

Constructive criticisms are always appreciated. This story is un-betaed. We just try our best to check each other. Thank you!

Disclaimer: KHR belongs to Akira Amano. We only thought of the plot. Any similarities between another story and this one are purely coincidental.

Warnings: Cursing. OOC.

Chapter 7: The Double Memories

Gokudera dragged Tsuna into the conference room the moment the double walked through the mansion's door. When no one said anything, Tsuna let out a confused "yes?"

"We already know. Tell us why you did it," Gokudera demanded.

"I have no idea what you are talking about."

"Don't play dumb!" Gokudera raised an accusing finger at Tsuna. "Do you have any idea what you've done!?"

Yoshi grabbed the storm guardian's arm and pushed it down slightly. "Hey, Tsuna. It's okay to tell us the truth. If you tell us now, maybe we can find a way to fix it."

Tsuna sighed. It was way too early in the morning to be dealing with this, especially after a long mission. "I really have no idea what's going on."

Reborn jumped off the chair and landed in front of Tsuna. "What were you doing yesterday?"

"A mission."

"I assigned no mission."

"I got one."

"Do you have the mission documents?"

"I burned it."

"Why?"

"It said so."

Gokudera crossed his arms. "Tch. So convenient. You just happened to be on a mysterious mission when the shipment was taken and happened to burn the sole proof of you even having one. Do you think Vongola is easily fooled?"

Yoshi hugged his double. "Tsuna, just turn yourself in. Let us know why you are doing this, and who else is involved. You can redeem yourself. We won't hurt you. We promise."

Tsuna felt like the conversation was going nowhere. "Before anything, I would first like to know what exactly are we discussing."

"And before that, what was the mission?" Reborn narrowed his eyes. "Answer carefully," he said as he pointed his gun at Tsuna.

Behind the double, Mokuro and Chrome walked in. "Oya o—" Their eyes widened, and smoke bombs went off. When the room cleared, the two along with Tsuna were nowhere to be seen.

Reborn lowered his gun to his side. His fedora hid his eyes.

"What should we do, Reborn?" Yoshi cowered when he can no longer tell Reborn's expression.

"If I recall correctly, the contract stated that if he betrays Vongola, I will shoot him."

"Why did you do that? Tsuna asked as they ran out of Vongola territory.

"You were about to get shot." Mukuro directed them to the left and into the woods.

"No, Reborn wanted an explanation."

"And I wanted your safety. Explanations can wait."

Chrome sped up. "Brother, it may be best if we stay at the usual place. No people."

Mukuro nodded, and the three changed their course to an abandoned building known only by Mukuro and Chrome. They rested there often during their travels.

It was late afternoon when they arrived. The inside of the building was dark, but they could see due to the glimpses of sunlight through the cracked windows. The pineapple-haired man led the others to the second floor, where there was a single two-seat couch against the wall. Mukuro flopped down on it.

Chrome put her backpack in a corner and then sat on a box nearby. "What was going on back there, Tsuna?"

The said person sighed and leaned on the wall across from the couch. "I was on a mission assigned by Vongola, but Reborn said there wasn't one. Apparently, some shipments disappeared during the time I was gone. I guess I'm the prime suspect."

"So they pointed their guns at you? This is why I hate the mafia. All violence, no reason." Mukuro crossed his arms. "What was the mission?"

"I was sent to pick up a package from someone named Margo at a neighbor city."

"What was the package?"

"I don't know. Margo never showed. I tried tracking her down after. Turned out, she doesn't even exist."

Mukuro sighed. "Sounds like someone in Vongola wants to get rid of you. We'll have to try to get in contact with that baby without others knowing."

"Brother, what about the slums? I already sent them a signal to hide, but they are also low on food…" Chrome pointed at the bag in the corner.

"Vongola must be monitoring that area. Let's stay put for tonight and leave early tomorrow to deliver supplies." Mukuro stared at the broken light bulb, dangling from the ceiling. "Mafias never change."

Tsuna sat down beside Mukuro on the couch. "I'm sorry."

The pineapple-haired man saw the guilty look on Tsuna. "It's not you. It's the mafia."

"But if I didn't—"

Mukuro put a hand in front of the double's face. "Stop."

When Tsuna relented, Mukuro made himself more comfortable on the couch. He closed his eyes and slowly drifted to sleep. Chrome signaled at Tsuna, and they headed downstairs. Once there, the girl sat on the ground near a window and patted at the spot next to her. Tsuna complied.

"I think it's time to tell you our past, Tsuna."

The double nodded, prompting her to continue.

"Brother and I worked for Vindice for many years. We were proud of our job… that was until we were sent on a mission to investigate the Estraneo Family for suspicious experiments. Ken and Chikusa, our close friends, went with us on the mission…" Chrome let out a deep breath. "During our time on the case, we confirmed that the Estraneo Family violated numerous mafia laws and gathered quite an amount of evidence against them. In order to destroy those proofs, the Estraneo Family launched an attack before we made it back to Vindice…Ken and Chikusa never made it…Brother was furious and wanted revenge, so he submitted the evidence, waiting for Vindice to tear them down except...they never did."

Tsuna had a confused look on his face.

"We don't know why either. We received strict orders to remove ourselves from the case soon after. Brother and I had none of it. We felt betrayed by Vindice, by mafias, so we plotted our revenge. The entire Estraneo Family, annihilated...For our crime, we were banished from Vindice."

The double fell into deep thought.

"Tsuna, there's one more thing…we found you in the Estraneo Family's experiment facility."

He felt numb. All his memories were in this tube filled with water. He vaguely remembered days he cried for help. He was drowning those days, but now, it was only a mild burn in his throat.

"You were in a large tube filled with liquid. When we got you out, you didn't remember anything."

"Help me!" he tried calling out, but his voice remained in his head. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't move. He was alone. So alone.

"We tried looking into your past, but didn't find anything."

"…dad."

Tsuna shuddered at the emerging memories.

Yamamoto, I-pin, and Lambo, unaware of the current crisis at Vongola, were greeted by an unusual amount of guards running frantically when they arrived at the mansion. He wanted to let Reborn and Tsuna know of their arrival, but when he asked the guards where they were, every single one of them was too busy to answer. After a few more tries was to no avail, Yamamoto decided to find them himself. Not in the kitchen. Not in their rooms. Not at the pool. He tried the training room next and spotted Reborn standing in the center. The sun arcobaleno stared at the dents on the wall created previously during Tsuna's training. The atmosphere was tense and unnerving. Yamamoto lightly knocked on the door before entering, immediately receiving Reborn's attention.

"Haha, hello! Where's everyone? What's up with all those guards out ther—"

"AHAHAHAHAHA! Minion Reborn, the Great Lambo is bac—"

A shot fired, taking several pieces of his hair.

"Lambo!" I-pin came running through the doors.

"Gotta…stay…calm…" Tears formed on Lambo's face.

"How was your training with Fong, Yamamoto?" Reborn disregarded the cow-like child altogether.

"It was great, haha! Fong said I should have some time to relax, so I figure I come visit Tsuna. The kids miss him too."

Reborn's face darkened upon hearing the double's name.

"So where's he, haha?"

"On the run."

"Why?" Yamamoto was beyond confused at this point.

"He's a traitor, who leaked important documents to our enemies. Of course, we will be after him," Yoshi answered as he walked into the training room. "Reborn will eliminate him once we find where he is. It's all according to the contract Tsuna signed himself."

Yamamoto tensed up the moment he saw the figure. The last person he wanted to see was Yoshi, but luck clearly wasn't on his side tonight. He grew serious. "Reborn, you really think Tsuna would do such a thing?"

The sun acrobaleno remained silent.

"Of course he would! Tsuna went on a mission when an important shipment disappeared. We later checked that there was none assigned to him. Not only that, he ran away with Mukuro and Chrome when Reborn questioned him. Can you explain that? I think not." Yoshi crossed his arms.

"I don't remember asking you."

Yoshi stepped back, startled by the rain guardian's tone towards him.

"Tsuna is the prime suspect, and so far, I have no reasons to believe otherwise. If you are here to argue, then I suggest that you leave." Reborn warned as he headed out the training room.

Yoshi's lips curved into a wicked smile when he could no longer see the figure of the arcobaleno. He turned to face the remaining three. "So Yamamoto, what will you choose? Stay with me as my rain guardian or side with the traitor and go against Vongola? We will always welcome you here." Yoshi held out his hand, anticipating an answer.

Yamamoto slapped his hand away before exiting the training room. His eyes pierced through the candidate. "Your rain guardian? I rather have the whole world against me. You're a joke, Yoshi. If you think I would be easily fooled, you're wrong. Lambo, I-pin, let's go."

"AHAHAHA! Minion! Lambo is leaving! Lambo will give you a gift." The child handed Yoshi a box. He followed the rain guardian and I-pin out the door before poking his head back into the room. Lambo stuck out his tongue at Yoshi. "AHAHAHA!"

Yoshi opened the box and before he could react, an explosion went off. He fell to the ground, staring at all the confetti falling down.

The following day, Yamamoto along with Lambo and I-pin walked through a large market with a different goal in each of their respective minds: find Tsuna, get food, follow Lambo. Yamamoto had no idea where Tsuna was. The only thing he could do was hope that he would magically bump into him in the middle of somewhere.

"Minion! Where does minion Tsuna live? Lambo is tired!"

"That's it! The slums!" The rain guardian swept Lambo and I-pin into his arms excitedly. "Good job, Lambo!"

"AHAHAHA! Yes! Lambo is great! The Great Lambo wants candy!" He pointed at some cotton candies.

"I-pin too!"

"Sure, haha!"

Meanwhile, Tsuna, Mukuro, and Chrome were on their way to the slums in order to deliver some much-needed supplies.

"To avoid getting caught, we will use a different route." Chrome pointed at an 'x' she drew on the map earlier. "We are here and need to get here." Her finger traced the path to the second 'x.'

"Kufufu, let's go."

Tsuna, Mukuro, and Chrome handed out supplies to the people gathering around them. The crowd brimmed with gratitude.

Chrome wiped the sweat off her forehead. "We are done." She handed her brothers two bottles of water.

Tsuna thanked her and took a bottle when he heard, "there they are!"

A group of Vongola appeared in their sight, and the three broke into a run. They split at an intersection, agreeing to meet back at the abandoned building. Vongola divided up their forces and chased after them. Tsuna turned a corner and smacked into someone. The said person grabbed the double's arm, stopping his fall. "Tsuna!"

Tsuna looked up to see Yamamoto smiling. Lambo and I-pin were on his shoulders.

"Catch him!" came from behind.

"Now is not the time to talk, Yamamoto. Let's go." The double pulled his friend along.

The four merged with the crowd once they reached the market. Tsuna carried Lambo, and Yamamoto carried I-pin in their arms. They kept their head low as they walked. Soon, they were free.

"Minion! The Great Lambo wants that again!" The child nudged at Tsuna while pointing at a cotton candy stall.

"Let's get him one, Tsuna!" Yamamoto bent down until he was eye leveled with Lambo. "Which one do you want?"

"Lambo wants blue!"

Tsuna felt a familiar sensation surged.

"Which one do you want?"

"Blue!"

"Alright, blue it is!" The taller figure handed him cotton candy.

The double grabbed his head.

"Where are you?"

"Dad! I'm here, d—"

The man covered his mouth. "Oh, shut up before I kill you, kid! Take him back with the others."

"Tsuna? Tsuna! TSUNA!"

Tsuna jerked his head up.

"Hey, you okay?" Yamamoto looked at him with worried eyes.

"Uh…yes. Can you get Lambo the candy? I need a moment."

The rain guardian nodded and went toward the stall. Nearby, a familiar woman was carefully selecting apples. A brown bag dangled at her side. Another nostalgic sensation took over Tsuna.

The woman walked into the room, smiling happily. "Dinner is ready! I made your favorite curry!"

"...Mom?"

Yoshi wandered around his office nervously. He heard from Gokudera earlier in the day that the man was coming. Since then, he hadn't been able to calm down. His steps faltered when he heard the too familiar voice.

"Where is he?" The man asked.

"In his office," the guard answered.

Yoshi ran over to his desk and spread out his untouched documents. He pretended to read one. Iemitsu entered his office without knocking, motioned the guard to leave, and shut the door.

"My adorable son, I miss you so much! Come and give your old man a hug!"

Yoshi didn't move.

The man's smile dropped when he could no longer hear the guard's footsteps. "I heard about Yamamoto. Which boss can't control their own guardians? My son wouldn't make this kind of mistake."

The boss candidate didn't reply. He stared hard at the document, acting as if he was focused.

"Look at me when I speak."

Yoshi looked at Iemitsu instinctively. "Sorry, I—"

"Sorry isn't enough!" The man slammed his hands on the desk. "How can you still mess up after all these years!?"

"Dad, I—" A slap hit Yoshi's face.

"I told you not to call me that when we are alone!"

"S-sorry."

"This is what happens when you get too comfortable." Iemitsu leaned close to Yoshi. "Don't think this is all yours. Remember, you are his double, a shadow and nothing more."
