After flipping the usual buttons and switches, the TARDIS started up. When it finally stopped, the Doctor rushed to the door, flung it opened, and stepped out. The Kylie followed, and gasped. The entire area was covered in snow. Glorious, white, glittering snow. It fell all around them and the place was filled with white light. But she didn't feel the least bit cold.

"What is this place?" She asked, breathlessly. The wonder of a new place never wore off. In turn, the Doctor never grew tired of her delight.

"This is the South Pole." He replied.

"But it isn't cold in the South Pole?" She asked.

"The TARDIS climate field extends a couple of feet."

Just then, a tremor shook the ground they were standing on.

They paused for a moment, looking around for the cause of it. Then the Doctor went back into the TARDIS and Kylie followed.

"What are you doing?" she asked. He disappeared into a corridor off the main control room and reappeared with a heavy fur coat.

"You'll need this." He said, holding the coat out to her. She grinned, realizing that exciting things were about to follow. She quickly slipped it on and they headed out into the cold. At first, they saw nothing of interest. Then Kylie caught a glimpse of something in the snow.

"Doctor! Something just moved over there", she said. He looked where she was pointing and there was nothing. He stepped closer and she followed. They both caught a flash of black cloth against the snow.

"Oi! Who's there?" The Doctor shouted. A strange thing stepped out. It had a head that looked a lot like a squid. It held a small round, glowing ball in its hand.

"Greetings, Lord Doctor." It said, bowing.

"Greetings, Lord Ood," replied the Doctor, "This is Kylie, my companion." Kylie nodded respectfully.

"My Lord Doctor," he replied, "We would much desire the services of such a celebrated individual such as yourself. We are encountering a small disaster." The sounds seemed to come from the small ball that he carried in his hand. A translating device, Kylie realized.

"What sort of problem?" replied the Doctor. The Ood bowed again.

"Please come this way." He said, and then disappeared down into what Kylie now saw as a tunnel in the snow. The Doctor looked at her and grinned, and she smiled back, her anticipation mounting. They climbed down into the tunnel. Once there, they followed the Ood down a long hallway and into a great cavern. Kylie gasped. It was huge! At the far end, there was a circle of seated Ood. The one at the head of the circle looked up.

"Welcome." he said. "Please be seated." The Doctor and Kylie sat down within the circle. The head Ood continued. "We face a grave threat, Doctor. The snow trembles around us, and many of our homes under the snow are collapsing." At this the Doctor looked concerned and maybe a bit confused. The Ood nods. "Let us join hands and show the Doctor what we have seen." The Ood in the circle all join hands, and the one next to Kylie clasps her hand. The Doctor and her glance at each other before joining hands as well. Instantly Kylie sees an image as clear as if it were right in front of her. The snow is shifting and shaking. Huge drifts are tossed around and tunnels beneath the surface are falling in on themselves. Oods are buried under the weight of the snow. In her mind's ear as well, an eerie chorus chants a sorrowful song. The snow continued to thrash around, almost as if it was alive. Then she saw something very strange. A face appeared, just for a moment, in one of the snow drifts. It was gone in an instant, but it was so disturbing that Kylie let go of their hands. Was the snow actually alive? She looked at the Doctor, who was gazing curiously at her.

"What is it, Kylie?" He asked.

"Didn't you see it?" she whispered back.

"See what?" He answered.

"See the- the face, all full of teeth- in the snow. Didn't you see that?" She stammered, beginning to be a little more than scared. He gave her a very grave look in return.

"A face. You're sure?"

"Yes. It was almost like the snow was...alive!" She exclaimed. The Doctor leapt to his feet.

"Come on." He said, sounding like a soldier giving orders. She jumped up and followed him out of the room.

"What is it?" She asked, trying to keep her voice from trembling. "What does it mean?"

"Kalveri." He said, continuing to walk.

"What's that?" She asked.

"Monsters that literally live in the snow. They take control of large amounts of it, and feed on the victims they bury."

"Oh, lovely." Kylie remarked, and the Doctor chuckled

They climbed out of the tunnel and into the snow covered land. They began to walk steadily toward the TARDIS, but an earthquake of the worst kind began. The land around them shook violently, and snow swirled and drifts crashed around them. He grabbed her hand and yelled "RUN!" and they dashed towards the TARDIS. Suddenly, however, a great big snow drift towered over them. They stopped just in front of it and Kylie's heart beat faster as it crashed over them. She lost consciousness.

When she woke up, she was lying on the cold, icy ground of a great snowy cavern. She tried to get up, and after a few tries managed to steady herself against the side of the cave. She was quite disoriented after the, well, whatever had just happened, and that was a feeling she didn't think she could ever get used to. Disorientation, that is. The whole getting trapped idea she'd probably need to get used to. She looked around for any sign of the Doctor, but he was nowhere to be seen. The ceiling rumbled over her head. Then, strangely enough, the rumbling began to sound like words.

"Do you know why you are here?" It thundered. Kylie, startled, managed to shake her head.

Something like laughter followed. "Well, small little human, it won't take long for you to figure out. It might have to do with a massacre of my race. Does that ring a bell?" Again Kylie shook her head. She'd never met the "Kalveri" before, although it had a remarkable amount of sarcasm for a snow drift. It didn't surprise her that there was another alien race that wanted her dead, although she'd never been told the reason before.

Again the ceiling rumbled with laughter. "Well, you performed the horrible deed, and whether or not you seem to remember it, and I don't know how you could forget, you can still pay for it. You are almost as horrible as the Doctor himself!" It roared. Large clumps of snow began to fall from the ceiling, and Kylie guessed it meant to bury her. The mention of the Doctor, however, had given her an idea.

"What've you done with the Doctor? You don't mean to keep him alive?" She shouted as loud as she could. The snow kept falling, but with it fell something else, a blur of black leather. She ran over to it, which was indeed the Doctor.

"May the universe be rid of both of you!" The Kalveri roared.

The Doctor moaned a little, but after she shook him a little, he woke up. Jumping up, he pulled out his sonic screwdriver. "RUN!" he shouted once again, pointing it at a wall of the cave, and dragging her towards it. The wall disintegrated and they ran through it and into the sunlight. The TARDIS was only a few feet away, and they managed to reach it and just about dived inside. They stood against the closed door, gasping for breath and smiling at each other.

"Well." said the Doctor, "Ever feel like this is getting old?" She smiled even wider.

"Not a chance!" she replied. "They just get more and more creative." He laughed, and walked to the console.

"The Kalveri's controlling the snow on a special frequency." He said. "It should only have control of the area for about a mile radius." He flipped a switch. "In theory, I should be able to create a counter frequency that will disable it. He turned a knob and pushed another few buttons. "There! That should do it."

They walked to the door, and opened it, when a blast of snow came through. They were thrown back into the TARDIS and the doors closed right away.

"Like I said, in theory," remarked the Doctor as he help Kylie up and they had a good laughed and began brushing themselves off. The Kalveri wasn't done with them yet. The next thing Kylie knew, the TARDIS flew up into the air, throwing her and the Doctor with it. The Doctor grabbed a hold of the railing, and just managed to grab her hand as well. They and the TARDIS bounced around painfully through the snow. Then they were thrown up again, so high they felt weightless for a second. When they hit the ground this Kylie was sure the ship would smash to bits. It didn't do that exactly, but the center console cracked open. A bright golden light shone through and Kylie couldn't help but look straight into it.

It was beautiful. Time seemed to slow down, and she couldn't turn away from it, even though she could hear the Doctor shouting in the background, trying to pull her away. They were still holding hands, she realized dazedly, as the light slowly engulfed her surroundings. Before she knew it, the TARDIS had disappeared, and she was floating through nothingness.
