Chapter 6
Nori woke disoriented at first, the room he was in was strange. The events of the previous night ran though his head, he looking down he saw Ori and the woman sleeping peacefully. Ori was no longer shivering but was coated in a fine sheet of sweat, beneath the covers it was warm with all three of them, Nori reached out to touch the woman's cheek. She was not sweating and neither was he. Placing a hand on Ori's head confirmed Nori's suspicion, his brother had a fever. The RI brothers where no strangers to sickness and fevers, after so many years struggling to survive disease had spread through the dwarven population. Nori shut his eyes trying to block the memory of the last time Ori had had a fever. Dori had shouted as him for staying away so long, angrily telling him their youngest brother was close to death with Dwell Fever, a sickness which had taken many dwarflings, the cure was elven medicine all most impossible to get hold of this far away from Elven cities, for the poor like them all they could do was hope the fever would break. Nori had not slept as he kept a visual over his brother for the first time all his skills had been useless. Dori barely spoke to him just ran to and fro doing all he could to help their brother.
As the sun continued to rise Nori vowed to do better this time.
A shrill ringing made him jump, his hand immediately drew his dagger, looking round wildly for the source of the noise. Beside him the woman groaned reaching out blindly, her hand hit his chest and froze.
Lauren's eyes snapped open as her hand touched something warm, in the dim light she saw the figure of a man, with a shout she snapped her hand back, in the process she lost her position on the bed and tumbled to the ground. With the thump came her memories of last night's adventure.
Lauren groaned rubbing her eyes, she stood and moved around the bed; not realising how little she was wearing until she switched the bedside lamp on and grabbed her phone the moment it stopped ringing. "Fuck" she whispered reading the number, looking up she met the eyes of the red haired man, Nori, she recalled. His eyes flicked from her eyes over the rest of her body, he smirked as his eyes fell on the Celtic knot tattooed across her hip. Lauren didn't blush but met his smirk as her eyes also wondered. Hay if he can look so can I, she thought; Nori's lay in her bed like the perfect one night stand, strong arms and a chest many men would die for, though he had a bit too much hair for Laurens taste. Shrugging she turned away from him, grabbing a t shirt from the radiator and pulling it on as she left the room heading for the kitchen.
Flicking the kettle on, she grabbed the landline and dialled the station, "Lancaster Police Station"
"Chief Inspector Lauren Smith, can you put me through to Inspector Lucas please"
"One moment" Lauren moved around the kitchen while she waited, putting on toast and gathering butter and jams for her guests
"Lauren" Came the happy voice of Lucas "I've got a surprise for you"
"If it's not a universal translator, I'm not interested" she replied drearily
"What?"
"Never mind"
"Look we need your help, there's been a murder"
