Chapter 7: No More Wishing

"The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open."

― Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters

From the beginning of our lives Klaus had a unique ability; it's the talent to distinguish if someone has a hidden agenda.

Definitely for a thousand years of deception and running, he perfected it.

Ever since we became vampires, our family was ruined, we were ruined.

I can sense he already know that this is not a simple dinner.

"Now on to different subject, tell me brother, what's behind this gathering?"

Niklaus gaze was grim but his smirk had a hint of playfulness in it.

When he was answered by my silence, He leans forward, frowning.

"Come on; don't start on the ceremony Elijah."

I gather my thoughts for a few minutes.

I've rehearsed this in my mind for a countless time thinking that if I did,

I'll say the right words but it seems I'm mistaken.

I must be foolish performing an act such as this;

I recognize my brother's behavior like I know the palm of my hand.

You see my brother, Niklaus used to tell people what the world was,

a canvas brutally tinted with black.

I believe that was before her because now he saw things in her way.

The canvas was no longer coal-black but stroked with scarlet, sapphire, and emerald.

Perhaps, this isn't insanity after all.

"I want you to be my best man given that I'm going to marry Katharina."

For a few minutes, I smiled, celebrating the fact that Caroline was rendered speechless.

"I'm a little behind on the times, but I believe the term you're looking for is OMG."

Before I can speak, Caroline, bursting with bliss, squealed.

"I can't believe this!" Caroline stands up, "You're going to get married! Come here in give me a hug you little minx! You better make me your Maid of honor!"

"Of honey, you are my maid of honor!"

It startles me a bit.

As the surprising scene unfolds,

Katherine and Caroline both giggling and having a conversation about dresses and shops.

The easy familiarity between them, felt so natural.

I hope their friendship goes far beyond dresses or chuckles.

Yes, Katherine is tough however, she needs a comrade, a loyal one and Caroline is the perfect fit.

I look at Niklaus and I knew I just knew in the dullness of his eyes,

He's not ecstatic about it.

"I'm afraid it's not going to happen."

Caroline shifts impatiently at her position, "Why not?"

"Because I don't want too"

I can feel my teeth clenching,

holding my anger back in a supreme effort of will,

Relax Elijah, I remind myself.

The words from my mouth come out clipped.

"Your personal discomfort might not be sufficient reason for putting Katherine and my happiness in difficulty, Niklaus. I think we deserve a shot of happiness"

Klaus eyes narrowed,

"Your happiness comes at the expense of my security Elijah. I have a reputation to uphold and what would my enemies think if I allow the traitorous Katharina marry my older brother? They'll be snickering like a lunatic."

"No need for them to laugh at me brother" I grabbed a napkin and wiped it the corner of my mouth "since they're laughing at you now"

Klaus questions drips with malice, "What?"

I can feel my hands squeezed by Katherine, "Elijah, please don't go there"

For a few seconds, I actually thought of bringing this conversation to an end,

but Klaus should learn that reality is always better than fantasy.

I jab him with my words.

"You were the one who strongly claim that love is a vampire's greatest weakness Niklaus, yet the irony of it,"

I stare at Niklaus then at Caroline, snorting derisively.

"You can't seem to take your eyes away from Caroline."

Klaus get to his feet.

I notice Caroline and Katherine's body became rigid, their faces frightened when Klaus forcefully slams his hand on the table.

"For over the course of 500 years I suffer, we suffer from her fleeing and her trickery. What on earth made you think that I would spare her?!"

Get a grip Elijah. I inhaled unhurriedly trying to restrain myself.

Like I said before, I know Niklaus. He's fuming but he's paying attention.

This period is crucial I thread with words delicately.

"You will spare here because I am asking you to spare her. Niklaus, as your family, I would ask that you provide me with this opportunity to feel, to care, to love."

The merest trace of surprise touches his face.

I can see him struggling, clearly my words made an impact,

but whatever it did in just a second it vanished.

Klaus, whatever he felt, eradicate it with the disdainful cackle.

"You're being ridiculous Elijah!"

He stretches his right hand aiming his index finger to Katherine.

"Will you really spend an eternity with a woman who did nothing but fool you?"

Alright, that's it!

I practically leap out from my chair. My arm shoots out to restrain his hand.

"She's going to be my wife soon, show some respect!"

Klaus yanks it away.

"Niklaus, it seems you fail to remember, but Caroline used your emotions to get what she wanted. She wielded you like she would in a sword. She manipulated you and exploits your affections towards her for her own gain. She's able to convince you to let Tyler go. One date and you effortlessly sacrifice one of your precious hybrids. I also remember you were too distracted to detect that our brother, Fin died thanks to her friends and you almost failed to save Kol, who was on the brink of his demise, since you were busy in daring her to get to know you. Katherine is traitorous as well as Caroline. No one's innocent here."

Caroline stands in the middle, still terrified at what she saw but now,

her eyes were wide as saucers as I called out her previous trespasses.

I shut my eyes off, biting my tongue lamenting at what I said.

She was an innocent bystander in this dispute but that was the truth.

I've learned for over centuries that reality is meant to wake us up.

It's time for her and Niklaus to ponder that

the grasses wouldn't be necessarily be greener now that they found each other.

"I already had the approval of Rebekah and Kol. I've spent a thousand years feeling alone and hopeless, now I found her, I won't let her go."

We were all standing but the distance between me and my brother was just an arm length.

I occupy it with my arms hopeful something would change. My arms hooked on his shoulders,

I wish the gesture can aid the words tumbling from my mouth.

"I rest my case. Niklaus, I need you as my brother to be supportive about this and what choice you'll make will be your own"

My younger brother scowls.

"No"

"Klaus?"

Tonight, I can tell Caroline's radiance lingers the most.

It's not because the moonlight cascades to her face.

It's not because the golden sand

nor the cerulean ocean created a certain glow on her pale skin.

This evening, I noticed,

Caroline in her white shirt and black pants is when she's most beautiful.

It's true not many saw her like that but for me,

her beauty is beyond comparison.

"Hey, are you okay?" Caroline asked, daring to come in front of me.

"I'm in no mood for company. Leave me alone Caroline."

"Well, I'm sorry that I'm bothering you but, let me remind you once again, we," Caroline points her finger at me then back at her, "you and I are in a relationship and you hurt your brother."

She doesn't know,

Oh my sweet Caroline, She doesn't know what she does to me,

her every touch, every time she holds me close.

Like at this moment, I can feel the warmth of her body against me.

Watching Caroline, I stood motionless.

Afraid that I might break.

Caroline breathe in, "Could you just please talk to him and fi-"

"Fix what? Don't push your luck love, I was feeling benevolent earlier. I sit and ate; I didn't reach down Katherine's throat and pull out her insides."

Caroline whispered, "Why can't you just do something selfless for once?"

I snapped. I forcefully remove her hands, my anger boils to the surface.

"Can't you see? Because there is no power in love! Mercy makes you weak! Look at Elijah! It's quite pathetic really! He wants to marry the girl who tricks him over and over again! He's weak!"

And so are you Boy!

Out of nowhere, Mikael's face appeared at my mind snickering at me.

I can hear Mikael's laugh. I can feel him, laughing audaciously.

And so are you boy! You're weak! Letting your emotions get the best of you!

He's right. Isn't he?

"I'm right; Love is a vampire's greatest weakness." I shook my head in disgust, "Look at me, obeying your whim."

Caroline snapped, "What? whim?! Are you serious right now? I'm trying to tell you that you're brother who loves you and stand by you for ages, your brother who was with you at every excruciating twist and turn of your bones during full moon giving you moral support and clothes, your brother who stopped Bonnie from killing you, You're older and only living brother is having the happiest moment in his life and you freaking destroyed it!"

Nobody dared scream at me like that, Nobody.

But she did. I can hear Mikael snicker again,

you claim to be the Alpha, the most powerful supernatural on earth,

Only get scream by a girl? You're pathetic!

You let emotions made you weak Boy!

I felt weak in the face of Mikael, I hate being weak.

I felt Caroline stifle and scream when I violently grip her shoulders.

"I destroy what I want to destroy or who I want to destroy! I would not let anyone manipulate me!" I stare at her, my eyes reminding her about my authority. "I am the Alpha and the original Hybrid, Don't you dare scream at me again!"

I felt a blow on my right cheek.

"How dare you?! You compelled me!"

I can see the horror at her teary eyes but all of the sudden it was gone and so is she.

I can feel him waiting, waiting for the right moment. And there he was again, Mikael, smiling devilishly.

Now that I slip up, the moment when I made a mistake, when I get careless, He emerged.

I can hear his thoughts, Mikael, he knows. Nobody's going to love you anymore boy! He tells again, nobody's going to love you anymore!
