Bonding
She yelped, diving under the covers in the middle of pulling her pajama shorts on. The clash of the thunder died down, echoing eerily into the silence of the rain outside. The rumble of the house steadied, and she sighed in relief. The room felt still, quiet and creepy. It was only thunder… What could it do to her? But the loud noise scared her, for she was not used to many storms like this. She poked her head out from under the blanket, peaking to see if the coast was clear. Seeing that the lightening was dim, and the thunder had quietened down, she sighed and crawled out from out of the blanket. She resumed to pulling her pajamas shorts on, and then looked at the window. She had fallen asleep earlier, but had forgotten about the pajamas sitting beside her bed.
Suddenly a monstrous gust of wind blew in through the window, which she had forgotten was open. The wind turned the room from cozy-like warm to chilling cold. She yelped and jumped up and ran to the window. She had a hard time pulling it at first, but she managed to slam it shut before locking to make sure it didn't accidently open again. The curtains waved around from the wandering breeze in the room. With her heart still pounding in her chest, she let out a sigh of relief. Then a sharp pain ran up her arm, and she looked down. She gasped when she had just noticed the pain swelling in her index finger. It must have gotten caught between the windowsill. She could see a little blood trickling from a small cut over her fingernail, already turning purplish. She whimpered, putting her finger in her mouth and sucking on it before jerking it out in pain.
"Darn it…" she muttered quietly.
The storm had woken her up and she had decided to put her pajamas on before going back to sleep again. It was dark outside, scary, deadly… How could she live so close to all of this? She sat down on the side of the bed, feeling the chill in the air nip at her feet, legs, and arms. She shivered, and whimpered quietly, wishing that someone was in there to sit with her to warm her up. She still inspected her finger, looking at how it was purple around the cut.
I miss my dad… That thought echoed through her head as if her mind was hollow, and a small tear slipped down her cheek. She still couldn't believe that it was all true. Her father was dead, like the rest of the people on her planet. She used to go to him all the time whenever she got a cut or stung by a bug or something. He'd always heal it as if it was magic…
A sob hiccupped from her throat. But she held back the tears that had tried to escape like the first and forced herself not to sob. She didn't want to cry. Not anymore. She was tired of crying… She didn't want to be alone, though… Besides, she wanted to get this cut taken care of.
She turned her head to the door. It was still, not a creak came from it. She expected someone to walk in at any minute. But she knew that Goku, Chi-Chi, and the brothers were all asleep in their rooms. Even though she didn't want to disturb them, she couldn't help but consider going to one of their rooms to see if they could comfort her. It didn't take long to make her decision when a loud crash of thunder rang through the house, shaking the walls and scaring her half to death.
She tiptoed down the hall, the cold floor sending shivers up her body and the floor creaking softly. She took light, careful steps. She didn't want to wake everybody, knowing that she would feel embarrassed about being scared of a little storm. But was it a little storm? She crept a little further, and stopped at a door. She put her ear up to it, listening. She didn't hear anything, so it couldn't have been Goku and Chi-Chi's room, since she could hear Goku's snoring up ahead in a room at the end of a hall.
She knocked softly, scared to knock at all and cringing when her finger stung and a throbbing went up her hand. But when she didn't hear anything, she hesitantly looked at the door knob. She saw her dark reflection in the handle, and gulped at the knot that hung in her throat. Suddenly she jumped when a crash of thunder again rumbled through the small house. She leaned against the door, scared to move. At that moment, it was either stay there all night and not move, or go into this room and ask whoever was in there is she could sleep with them tonight or help her with her wound.
So, she took in a deep shaky breath and grabbed hold of the handle. She twisted it and poked her head inside. There were two or three book shelves on one side of the room, a small desk with more books on it, and a small table on the other side of the room. A few posters hung around the place, although she couldn't tell what was on them. But she looked toward the bed, and saw a few lumps under the blanket. She swallowed again, and stepped inside. She gently closed the door behind her and turned to the bed.
"G-Gohan?" she called out quietly, softly. The lumps shifted a little, but he remained asleep. Again, she called. "Gohan…?"
Finally the older boy groaned, lifting his head up and blinking a few times, his hair ruffled and his face a little dazed. But he regained his senses and looked around before catching a glimpse of her. He turned and reached for the light and flicked on the bulb. When her eyes adjusted to the sudden light, she saw that he was wearing a blue nightshirt with a happy face on it.
"Oh, Carry?" he yawned, stretching his arms. He turned his head and glanced at his alarm clock beside the bed and lifted a brow. "It's midnight… What's wrong?"
She looked down at her feet, scared of answering. She swung her foot back and forth, holding her hands behind her back in embarrassment. She was shivering slightly, her hair swaying a little. Gohan gazed at her through tired eyes, but he then realized and sat up more.
"Oh, you're scared of the storm, aren't you?" he asked, receiving a small, soft nod. He then smiled gently, his mind searching for an answer. A large crack of thunder again sent the house rumbling, causing her to jump. He was silent for a small minute, but his good conscious made up his answer.
"Oh… um… come on. You can sleep with me."
Carina tilted her head up, revealing a relieved smile before she walked over to the bed. He lifted the blanket and scooted over, letting her climb in under it. He blinked when she snuggled up to him, and shivered. She was shaking badly, worse than he had thought. Feeling her arms and legs sent a shiver up his own spine.
Wow… she's freezing! No wonder she was shivering so much… Poor thing… The teenager thought sadly, feeling sorry for her. Then he smiled and tucked the blanket around her. He sighed and leaned back against the pillow and let his arm lean over her small body which was half his size. She sighed heavily. Now she was warm, she was safe, she was not alone. Even if this was only a small favor in his mind, it meant a lot to her to have someone to comfort her, even if it's just letting her sleep with him.
Gohan was about to close his eyes to fall into a deep sleep, but he looked at her one more time. Then he blinked when he saw her hand. He suddenly lifted his head and looked closer, putting his hand under hers.
"Carry, what happened to your hand?" he asked, sitting up now with a look of concern on his serious features.
She shivered when the covers abandoned her. She had almost forgotten about her hand. She looked up and looked at her finger.
"It got caught when I shut the window…" she answered meekly, sniffling quietly.
Gohan nodded. "Let's go in the bathroom. We'll get something to put on that and wrap it up, ok? You're bleeding kinda badly."
She nodded, sniffing. She felt one of his arms slid under her knees and one curl around her back as he turned and swung his legs out of the bed. He stood up and shivered himself when the floor sent chills up his legs. He wiggled his toes for a moment, and then carried her out of the room and made his way through the darkness to the bathroom. Once he got there, and thankfully the door had been left open, he walked in, turned the lights on, closed the commode top and sat Carina on it. He then turned to the drawer and opened it. He dug through the drawer.
"Aha!" he whispered to himself, smiling when he had found the antibiotic cream in the back of the drawer. Chi-Chi always put these kinds of medications in the back of the drawer, had done so since he was little. That was the first place she'd look whenever he came home with a cut when he was little. She had always acted overdramatically about those tiny things, even when they didn't hurt. She'd say that someday they could kill him or put him in the hospital. He held the bottle in his hand, studying the effects on the back before grabbing some cotton balls and then a wash rag and some bandages. He then walked back to her and kneeled down in front of her.
"Let me see it." When she held out her small hand to let him see it, he took it in his and examined it in the light. It looked pretty bad, but too bad. The blood was thick now, had stopped bleeding quickly. The tip of her finger, around it, had all turned a light shade of purple. The nail had turned to a deep shade of purple. It would probably look bad in the morning. Oh what a fit Chi-Chi would throw… he could only hope that she wouldn't react too badly.
"Is it okay?" she asked, her eyes sparkling from hurting tears.
He shoved his thoughts away and smiled at her reassuringly. "Yeah, it's okay." He then arched a brow and frowned, then smiling jokingly. "But it might need a few shots to heal it though… It looks like it could get infected in the future…"
Carina gasped loudly, jerking her hand away, her eyes as wide as melons and her arms starting to tremble. She hated shots, and had since she was a toddler when she had gotten her first shots for school. She had to get them in her legs, and they hurt badly, so badly that she cried. She could now feel her throat tighten up at the thought of getting shots in her finger. New tears filled her blue eyes from fear.
Gohan's eyes widened and he realized that she was now very, very frightened and panicked about what he had said. His chest tightened and he quickly put his hands on her good one hand.
"No, no, no! I was kidding! I was just joking, I'm sorry! Don't cry!" He pulled her close to him and hugged her when she had started to cry a little, letting a few sobs escape. His mind was screaming that he ought to be ashamed of himself. He did feel awful… She was only a little kid, it wasn't right to tease her like that. He hated himself for it now. He shushed her, rubbing her back with a hand, whispering that it was okay and that he didn't mean it. Soon she had calmed down, and he looked at her, smiling worriedly.
"You okay, now? I'm really sorry…" he said.
She sniffled, wiping her eyes and nodding. He could see a faint smile forming on her lips. He sighed in relief, and went back to looking at her hand. He took some soap and rubbed it on her hand, then some water to clean the wound. She cringed when it stung like an ant sting, but she stayed still. He took the rag and gently, carefully, rubbed the soap and water off of her hand.
"Gohan?"
He looked up from her hand for a moment before returning back to inspecting it. "Yeah?"
"I'm sorry that I woke you up… I didn't know what to do with my hand… it hurt, and also I was scared of the storm…"
He looked up and saw the sad expression on her face, her eyes glistening with new tears. He smiled and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Hey, it's okay. It doesn't bother me that you woke me. You needed my help. It's good that you came to me when you did. Or else, it might have gotten infected by morning and you would have had to…" he trailed off, not wanting to say what he said earlier. He didn't want to scare her again, so he shut his mouth before he actually let it slip.
"Have to what?" she asked.
He hurriedly looked for another way to put it. "Um… you would have to go to the doctor!"
She blinked and looked at her finger. He rubbed it again with the rag, getting as much soap out of it as he could. He then took the bottle of the antibiotic and popped the cap open. A funny smell floated off of it, making her gulp.
"Will it hurt?"
"Huh?"
She nodded to the bottle. "Will it hurt?"
He was quiet for a minute, but answered her question truthfully. "It will sting for a little while, but it'll feel better after some time. I promise."
She swallowed hard, looking down at her hand. Gohan let his thoughts bounce around in his head. He knew that she was scared. But he needed to make her feel better. So, he smiled and patted her arm.
"You know what used to help me whenever I was scared?" he asked, smiling brightly now that a new idea bloomed into place.
She shook her head. "What?"
"There's an old song that dad used to sing to me when I was little, whenever I had a cut. We used to sing it together, and it made me feel a lot better. Wanna hear it?" When she nodded, he traced back to when he had heard his father sing it.
Alright, let's see… How did it go again? He wondered to himself. But then it came to him and he smiled. He sang the song in a fast pace to add more affect to it.
"1 apple, 2 apple, 3 apple, 4, one fell on my head and made me feel like bread.
1 apple, 2 apple, 3 apple, 4, another fell on my head when I slept on a sled.
1 apple, 2 apple,3 apple, 4, another fell on my head when I was fed.
1 apple, 2 apple, 3 apple 4, another fell on my head and then I fled!
1 apple, 2 apple, 3 apple, 4, no more apples fell on my head!"
Carina then let out a giggle, a big smile forming on her face. He chuckled when he saw her eyes shining again in happiness.
"Wanna try it?" he asked.
She giggled and nodded. "Yeah!"
Gohan grinned and they started the song again at the same time at the same fast pace he sang before. They never broke eye contact.
They both laughed after they had finished the song. He was right, it did make her feel better! The song made her happy, and it was funny trying to say each line. But then she looked down at her hand. She blinked with wide eyes when she saw that her hand had been wrapped, and that it stung slightly when she noticed that a little of the white cream oozed out from under part of the bandage.
"See? Now that wasn't so bad!" he grinned at her cheerfully. While she had been distracted by the song, he had quickly put the cream on her hand without looking and wrapped it before she had a chance to see what happened. She hadn't noticed it at all, was too happy with the song to think of her hand.
She laughed, examining her hand in astonishment and amazement. Her eyes were wide as she smiled at her finger. She then looked at Gohan with bright blue eyes. She then wrapped her arms around his neck tightly, taking him by surprise.
"Thank you!"
He was still for a small moment, but then he chuckled and hugged her back. "You're welcome. If you ever need me, you can ask me. Okay?" When she nodded against his shoulder, he patted her back.
They didn't part, either. He got a grip on her, with one hand under her rear while she wrapped her legs around his abdomen and one hand on her back. She hugged his neck as he turned out the bathroom lights and they walked down the hall. They went back into his room, welcomed by the warmth of the glowing lamp beside his bed. He placed her on the bed, and crawled over her and lied down beside her. They wriggled under the blankets and he let her use his arm as a pillow. She sighed in relief, snuggling up next to his nightshirt, feeling the warmth radiate off of him.
"Good night, Gohan…" she yawned before closing her eyes.
He yawned, too. "Night, Carry…"
Then after a while, they both had fallen asleep with smiles on their faces. No doubt that they had good dreams right when the warm darkness engulfed them.
Aww, I wanted to squeal from the cuteness of this when I was writing it! Hope you guys felt the same! Thanks, comment! :)
