Chapter 7
Olivia rolls onto her back, draping her forearm over her forehead. "Please tell me we don't have to go to school today."
Alex laughs, already swinging her legs over the edge of her bed. "I wish," she says, heading for the bathroom. "You should get up and shower so we can stop at your apartment before heading to school."
"No," Olivia whines. "Come back to bed." She reaches out, grabbing the back of Alex's shirt and pulls on it, making Alex lose her footing.
Alex lets out a shriek of laughter, falling onto the bed. She lands halfway on top of Olivia with a soft oof. Grinning, she leans up and presses her lips to Olivia's. "I'm so glad we decided to try this," she says after she pulls away.
Olivia smiles. "Yeah," she says, "me too."

They get to school just as the late bell rings, and by lunchtime Olivia is ready to cut the rest of the day. Grabbing their lunches, they fight through the cafeteria crowd and cross campus grounds, slipping through the hole in the fence. They walk through the small section of forest and out into the clearing.
"The whole school knows about us," Olivia says, dropping her backpack off her shoulder. She sits cross-legged on the ground, her lunch tray precariously perched on her left leg.
"Well at least half of them saw you kiss me on Thanksgiving," Alex says, sitting across from Olivia. "It doesn't surprise me that the whole school knows."
Olivia frowns. "Three of your ex-girlfriends cornered me in the bathroom today."
Alex laughs, shaking her head. "I'm sorry," she says. "I know it's not funny, but they're just jealous because my heart's only ever belonged to you."
Olivia tosses a french-fry at Alex's head. "No wonder all the girls love you, Cabot," she says, grinning. "You always know the corniest things to say."
Alex doesn't even roll her eyes, choosing instead to look seriously at Olivia. "It's true," she says. "No one's ever been able to compare to you, Liv."
Olivia looks down at her empty lunch tray, blushing up to the tips of her ears. "C'mon, Alex."
"No," Alex says, setting her tray to the side. She moves closer to Olivia until they are nearly touching. "It's true," she says. "It's always been you, Liv."
At a loss of what to say, Olivia surges forward, and their bodies move in sync – Alex lying on her back, Olivia on top of her. And then they're kissing and Alex thinks she could get used to this feeling very quickly.
When Olivia finally pulls away, she grins sheepishly down at Alex before rolling into the dying grass beside her. "I really do love you, Alex," she says, staring up between the trees at the cloudless blue sky, "in every way a person can love another person. I just want you to know that."
Alex reaches over and takes hold of Olivia's hand. "I know," she says, smiling.
They are quiet for a few minutes and then Alex says, "Hey, do you wanna get out of here?"
Olivia props herself up on her elbow, looking down at Alex. "What, like, ditch the rest of the day?"
"Yeah."
"Okay," Olivia says, standing. She helps Alex to her feet and they grab their backpacks and trash from lunch and leave campus.
.
.
The drive back to the City is fraught with tension to say the least – especially with Alex keeping her hand on Olivia's thigh, her thumb rubbing small circles. Olivia's hands tighten on the steering wheel, whitening her knuckles, and she clenches her jaw in an attempt to focus on the road.
At a particularly frustrating red light, Olivia glances over at Alex and notices her smirking. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" she asks, looking back up at the light.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Alex says, making her voice sound as innocent as possible.
Olivia snorts, rolling her eyes. "I hate you so much."
Alex removes her hand from Olivia's leg and folds them in her lap. "Hmm," she says. "I'm sure."
Olivia shakes her head, laughing quietly. "Your place or mine?"
"Yours," Alex says. "My parents are coming home from France today, but I don't know what time they'll get in."
The light turns green and Olivia turns onto her street, parking in front of her apartment building.
They are barely hidden in the elevator when Olivia feels Alex's arms encircle her and cold fingertips creep up underneath her shirt. "What are you doing?" she asks, leaning back into Alex's embrace.
"Nothing," Alex says, her voice husky in Olivia's ear. "My hands are cold and your skin is warm."
The elevator dings and the doors open, and Alex takes her hands out from underneath Olivia's shirt and takes a step back to give Olivia some space. But as soon as they are standing in front of Olivia's apartment door, she is pressed up against Olivia's back, her hands making their way back underneath Olivia's shirt.
"Is this okay?" Alex asks, bending her head to kiss Olivia's neck.
Olivia pauses, reaching into her pocket to pull out her key. "Yes," she breathes. "Yes. It's more than okay."
Alex grins wolfishly, trailing more kisses down Olivia's neck. With shaking hands, Olivia slides the key into the lock and opens her apartment door. It takes them a few extra seconds, but they make it into the apartment and shut the door behind them successfully.
And then hands and lips and teeth are everywhere.
Olivia is sure she's on fire with the heat radiating off their bodies, and Alex…well, Alex has never felt this intense with anyone ever.
Using the wall for support, they stumble down the hallway, leaving various articles of clothing and tilted picture frames in their wake, totally unaware of their surroundings.
It is not until they are in the living room and the sound of breaking glass breaks through their bubble that they realize they are not alone.
They break apart so quickly that it would be funny if they weren't so mortified. Wide-eyed, they stare across the room at Serena Benson.
"What the fuck is going on here?" Serena yells, her words slurring slightly, a shattered bottle of vodka lying at her feet.
Olivia shakes her head quickly, at a loss for words. Then she looks down and realizes her shirt is gone. She chances a look over at Alex and is mortified to see her standing there in just her bra and unbuttoned jeans.
"Ms. Benson—" Alex starts, but she is quickly cut off by Serena's yelling.
"You," Serena yells, pointing an accusatory finger at Alex, "I should've known this would happen. You get out of my house and pray I don't call your parents."
Alex swallows hard and looks over at Olivia. "Liv—"
Olivia shakes her head. "Just go, Alex," she whispers. "I'll call you later."
Alex nods and walks to the door, picking up her clothes as she goes.
The door closes and Serena looks back at Olivia. "Put on a shirt," she says.
Olivia nods quickly. Picking up her shirt from where it is discarded on the floor, she pulls it on.
"I don't understand where I went wrong," Serena says, bending to pick up the shattered glass at her feet. "You've always been so well behaved, Olivia. You've always been such a good girl. I know we've had our issues, but why are you punishing me like this?"
Olivia shakes her head, wiping her sweaty hands on her jeans. "I'm not punishing you, Mom."
"Oh, you're not?" Serena says, her hand closing around the unbroken part of the bottle. She picks it up, and its jagged shards glitter in the living room light. "Then why are you fucking her?"
Olivia shakes her head, pressing her back against the wall behind her. "I'm not," she says, fear sinking deep into her heart as Serena approaches her, the broken bottle held menacingly in her hand.
Serena laughs manically. "That's not what I saw today!"
Olivia shakes her head again. "I love her!" she yells. "I love her."
Instead of placating her, this only serves to enrage Serena more. "What do you know about love?" she yells. "You're incapable of love."
Olivia's muscles tense, adrenaline flooding her body. "Fuck you," she spits. "I love her."
And then it all happens at once.
Serena moves quickly. The bottle in her hand swings forward, its sharpest edge catching Olivia right above her eye. Blood falls quickly into Olivia's eye, blocking her vision. She pushes out as hard as she can as the glass bottle is swung again, this time catching Olivia's hand. She pushes out once more, connecting with Serena as hard as she can. Serena falls hard and Olivia can hear a sickening crack over the blood rushing in her ears.
And then Olivia is running as fast as she can.
