Somebody requested this long ago. I don't know how I feel about how it turned out, but thought I would share, anyhow!
"Auggie, surprised to see you in the office this early."
Auggie looked toward the voice in confusion. "I'm always here by seven thirty. What are you talking about?" He wasn't able to identify the other person, but that happened more often than he let on.
"I just thought, after seeing you leave Allen's with Kelly last night…"
"Kelly?" Auggie asked. The woman from the night before definitely told him her name was Jennifer.
"Yeah, Kelly. She's new, fresh off the farm, working on the third floor."
Auggie gave a large fake smile and nodded.
"What was she like, man?"
Auggie ignored the question and ordered a latte.
"She did take you home, right?"
"Have a good one." Auggie said in his direction as he walked back to his desk.
Auggie sat the coffee on the edge of his desk and put on his headphones. Without sitting down, he searched for anyone named "Kelly" in the departments on the third floor. He quickly found a hit for the South American watch desk in office 3409-C.
Auggie sat with his coffee and thought about what he should do. Unfortunately, while her file had a physical description and picture, that didn't help him determine if she was the same woman from his night before. Langley needed to start keeping audio files on people.
Taking a deep breath, he decided there was only one way to find out if Kelly and Jennifer were one and the same.
Auggie knocked on the office door and plastered a grin on his face as he walked in. He knew that several people worked in the space, so he stood inside the doorway for a moment to get his bearings.
It didn't take long for him to hear a surprised gasp. "Auggie?"
"Kelly, what a surprise." Auggie replied.
A familiar touch landed on his arm. "What are you doing here?" She asked quietly.
"I wanted to meet Kelly. Heard she was a lot like this girl I met named Jennifer." Auggie replied quietly. "Also, I brought you coffee."
The coffee was pulled from his hand as an elbow was offered for him to hold. Kelly led him into the hallway.
"Well this is awkward." She said, leaning against the concrete wall of the hallway, staring at the man she lied to the night before.
Auggie shrugged. "It happens. It's a building full of liars."
"I didn't know you worked here."
"That's the way I like it."
"I had a good time." She said, moving closer.
"So did I, which is why I wanted to stop by."
"You really don't waste time, do you?" Kelly asked, a little shocked.
Auggie pinched his lips. "I'm not looking for anything serious."
There was a moment of silence across from him. "Yeah. Me neither."
"I figured that was the case, with the fake name and all. But considering we do work in the same building, I didn't want it to be a problem later or anything."
"Yeah, I get it. I was just looking for a good time, you were looking for a ride home, it wasn't anything more than that."
"Good, I'm glad you understand." Auggie smiled and turned to walk away.
"Seriously?" Kelly said as he started to walk away.
Auggie stopped. He cocked his head in her direction.
"You seriously think that any woman is okay with that?"
"You just agreed with me." He said, turning back toward her.
"Fine. I lied. We are a building full of liars, and I really enjoyed last night. I wouldn't mind a real date, as Kelly instead of Jennifer this time."
Auggie grimaced and walked closer. Kelly's hand rested on his arm and he looked toward her touch. "Kelly, I'm sorry. I'm just not interested in anything serious right now."
"Just touching them, holding them, and using them to fulfill your needs, huh?"
Auggie sighed. "I'm sorry."
"I thought you had fun."
Auggie sighed. "Yep. Trust me. A night of fun is all I was interested in."
"But you don't even know me."
"I'm not interested in a relationship with anybody right now. I'm particularly not ready for one with anybody in this building. It's not you, it's me." He cringed as he put forth the tired cliché.
Kelly stood there looking at him a moment. "Yeah, I get it."
Auggie smiled. "So we are good?"
"Yeah. We're good." Her voice was more sure of this than she felt. But that's all that mattered.
Auggie smiled, he was obviously proud of having smoothed things over. "I'm glad."
He turned to walk away.
"Hey, Auggie..." She called
"Yeah?"
"If you ever want another night of just fun, I would be interested."
He smiled and replied. "Noted."
Then he walked away.
