Chapter 7
The next day, about 7am, Mai got up and started getting ready to go to work. Once showered and dressed, she went to her room, picked up her bag... then was distracted by a knock on the door. Mai went to answer it, and was pleasantly surprised to discover Oliver, standing at her door step.
"Hey, what you doing here?" Mai was happy to see him, of course, but didn't know what approach to take after what happened Yesterday. And the more time she spent with him like this, the harder it would be to let him go.
"Me and Lin came to pick you up, but if you prefer it, we can walk" Oliver suggested, smiling softly. Mai hid her blush.
"I couldn't make you walk" Mai smiled, she could do with some fresh air, but she didn't think it fair to make him walk. Oliver, however, wanted to walk. He wanted to have some time with Mai.
"I don't mind walking, it would be nice to finished our conversation" Oliver suggested. Mai didn't know what that meant. She wanted to ask, but didn't think she could.
"Ok if your sure, one second, let me get my coat"
Mai went into her bedroom and Oliver waved off Lin. Mai came out from her room with a black jacket, which is warmer than her last one.
"Ready?" Oliver asked as Mai walked out of her room.
"Yes" Mai announced. She locked her door and they set off. Mai didn't know why, but she felt... strange. She tried not to show it.
As they walked down the road, Mai was lost in thought. So much so, she nearly forgot she was walking with someone.
"Hey Mai you haven't said a word, is something wrong?" Oliver inquired. Mai was pulled from her trance, hiding her slight confusion with a smile.
"Oh no, sorry I'm fine" Mai reassured, waving her hands in front of her face. Oliver could tell she was hiding something. He didn't hide his concern.
"Ok, but you know you can tell me anything" Oliver assured. Mai looked down at her hands like they were the most interesting things ever. She wanted to tell him... she just didn't know how it put it into words. Oliver, almost out of reflex, took her hand in his. Mai blushed again, giving her cheeks a pink tint. They were round the back of SPR and hadn't even realised it.
"Mai the reason I wanted to see you is because... I wanted to finish where we left off yesterday" Oliver confessed, stepping towards her...
At SPR a few minuets before.
Monk and Ayako were in Oliver's office. They were having a heated discussion about what had happened the night before, with Oliver and Mai. They were so desperate for gossip, they started making their own.
Monk walked to the open window to think about their newest possible conclusion. He looked down to the streets below, seeing Mai and Oliver, hand in hand. Ayako saw the subtle changes in his expression, and went to join him. Mai was at Oliver's side, complete shock filled them when Oliver hugged her. They felt the little exchange was endearing.
"We should go tell Lin, it was his idea to set them up in the first place" Monk suggested. Ayako was sure the news would travel fast throughout their small group. Monk was a bit of a gossip. Ayako couldn't let that happen. If Mai found out that every interaction she made with Oliver was being broadcast, she would close up again. Not to mention, she would kill them.
"We can only tell Lin, Mai will flip if we tell everyone...
With Oliver and Mai
Oliver still held Mai in a tight embrace. Mai stopped fighting her blush and wrapped her arms around him.
"I... I like you Mai" Oliver confessed. Mai felt her breath hitch and her heart stop. She had always dreamed of hearing him say those words but...
Oliver let her go, pulled away to look at her. He saw the speechless shock, but it slowly gave way to sadness. Mai knew, as soon as he got his memory back, it would go back to how it was before. Although she liked how it was before, the old Oliver... the old Naru... didn't like her like that.
"Mai" Oliver called, pulling Mai out of her trance. "Sorry Mai, I didn't mean to... just forget it" Oliver mended. He didn't want to make things weird between them. Mai could see the hurt in his eyes. Oliver felt like a nail had been driven through his heart. Mai was desperate to stop the pain he felt. She knew it all to well.
"Oliver I like you too but..." Mai started, not really sure how to finish that sentence. "I have always loved you... but when I told you, you turned me down" Mai felt her tears threaten to fall. "And now, when you get your memory back, everything will go back to the way it was before" Mai turned, not having the heart to look at him anymore. She only looked up when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"Mai-" Oliver started, only to be interrupted.
"Hey Mai!" Mai's school mate called from across the road. She was walking with another of Mai's friends, before crossing and running up to them. Mai wiped her tears, silently praying they hadn't seen. They did of course.
"What's wrong Mai?" Keiko asked, seeing Mai's hastily wiped tears.
"I'm fine... just something in my eye" Mai covered badly, giving them a forced smile. Mai wanted to tell them that this was a bad time, but they were her friends, and she didn't want to hurt their feelings.
"Stop with the small talk Mai, what's up?" Michiru demanded, but she wasn't harsh. Mai was about to answer when Keiko butted in.
"You didn't get fired did you?" She exclaimed, looked at Mai with worried eyes. She didn't know why else they would be talking outside and Mai trying not to burst out crying.
"Oh no! No, nothing like that, we were just walking to work" Mai covered badly, forcing another smile. No one was falling for it, but they didn't push it.
"Ok then, we have to go past there anyway" Michiru announced, leading the way, watching as the others followed after her. Getting to the door, Keiko and Michiru pulled Mai into a warm hug before saying their goodbyes and being on their way.
This was the second time they had been interrupted, and Oliver really wanted to tell her. He waited until he was sure no one was going to interrupt him.
"Mai... when you told me you loved me... I thought you meant Gene because he and you are so alike... you are both kind hearted and considerate. I'm not. Why would someone as wonderful as you... like someone like me. I remember you Mai... I remembered everything about you, and I do love you Mai. I always have" Oliver confessed. Mai smiled despite herself. She felt a warmth spread through her, and a tear slid down her cheek. She felt overwhelming happiness. She loved Oliver... she never even imagined he would harbour any feelings for her at all, let alone love her.
Oliver pulled her into an embrace. Even Oliver felt happiness fill him. They pulled apart after a few seconds. Mai smiled, looking deep into Oliver's midnight blue eyes. Oliver stared into Mai's chocolate brow eyes. He placed a hand on her cheek. Mai stepped back, onto the step behind her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him to her. Oliver wrapped his arms around Mai's waist. Mai didn't even have the time to be embarrassed, when Oliver pushed his lips onto hers. Mai felt her knee's go weak, her eyes shut, as if she keeping them open was too much to bare. She felt the warmth make everything inside her jolt. She felt his lips move gently against hers. It was as if she was dreaming. He kissed her and she kissed back.
She gasped as Naru leaned away, blue eyes observing her for any harsh reaction to what just happened. Mai just stared at him breathless as her heart pounded excitedly against her chest.
Oliver smiled, before taking her hand and walking her up the stairs. Mai blushed, looking at their entwined fingers.
Lin was at the top of the stairs and had seen and heard the whole thing. He watched as they started walking towards him. Lin quickly entered the base, not bothering to hide his smirk. It was futile to try. Ayako and Monk both pounced on it.
"Why are you smirking like that? What did you do?" Ayako questioned, Lin's smirk's were rare, but always trouble.
"It's nothing, never mind" Lin lied, Ayako knew it wouldn't help so she let the matter go, for now anyway. She was about to inquire about Mai and Oliver's whereabouts, but when the door opened, it rendered her question mute. Mai was still blushing slightly, and Oliver was smiling. Although new Oliver was happier, this was different.
"Well, someone's in a good mood" Monk commented slyly. He read the situation correctly, even though he wasn't sure he did.
"Well, if you don't mine, we have a case" Lin was smirking yet again. Ayako also read the situation correctly but it took her a little longer.
"Wait, we don't take cases without Oliver's approval" Ayako pointed out.
"Yes, I know that, but we still have a company to run, and it might help jog some memories" Lin corrected.
"Ok, so what is the case?" Ayako asked, knowing it would be hard to solve without Oliver's intellect.
"The case is low profile, and to make sure it was a real case I went down there last week. The case is the fun house in an old abandoned theme park" Lin informed, almost sure of how everyone will react.
"What?!" Ayako yelled.
"You've got to be kidding!" Monk yelled, louder.
"Wow" Mai muttered. Lin got them right.
"We will be leaving in 2 hours so go home and pack, and we will meet you here at 10am" Lin announced. "Mai, Oliver, I will drop you off at Mai's whilst I pack then I will drop you, Oliver at your so you can pack and we will go from yours" Lin told them. (He was now setting them up) "Everyone else, I will meet you here as I said at ten whilst Oliver and Mai are at Mai's place" Lin ordered.
"Ok sure, come on Monk I'll drop you off at your place" Ayako suggested, taking Monk's hand, she helped him up (His shoulder had yet to heal) she then led him out the door, she was still holding his hand and she didn't even notice. Mai felt the sight was endearing.
"Masako, would you like to take a cab with me? Your house is on the way to mine" John asked.
"Sure, lets go" Masako answered and got up and walked out with John. Mai was still metaphorically awing.
"Come on we should go too" Lin suggested, getting up and walking to the door with Mai and Oliver following.
"Sure" Mai smiled.
They all got in the van, Mai in the middle, Lin in the driving seat and Oliver next to Mai in the passenger seat.
After they arrived at Mai's house she and Oliver got out the van and Lin drove away. Mai had mixed emotions right now. she wanted time with Oliver, but at the same time, she wasn't sure if she wanted to be alone with him after what happened earlier.
"So, would you like some tea?" Mai asked, taking off her coat and hanging it up. She took his silence as a yes, turned and was about to walk to the kitchen, when strong arms wrapped around her.
Oliver pulled her to him, before locking his lips with hers, his eyes closed. Mai gasped, and he used that moment to deepen the kiss. Mai closed her eyes, and was about to kiss back... when she forced herself to pull back.
"When you said earlier that... you... lo... love... me" Mai stared weakly. "Why... why didn't you tell me... before?" She asked.
"I guess I was afraid that you loved Gene and not me" Oliver answered "But I'm not like that anymore"
"Well just so you do know, I love you, and always have" Mai had a smile on her face. Oliver pulled Mai to him again, his lips landing on hers. This time Mai didn't resist. He deepened the kiss and Mai just closed her eyes and allowed him to.
The need was air was raising, and if they didn't need to breathe, they probably wouldn't have pulled away.
"I... I should go pack, Lin will be here soon." Mai suggested, looking down to hide her blush. Oliver saw it of course.
"Ok, I'll be waiting" Oliver teased, he smiled at her as she went into her bedroom. Mai shut the door and lent against her door, her heart beating excitedly. She smiled, trying to calm down her rapid breathing, before quickly packing her stuff.
Mai came out a few minuets later, she was still blushing when Oliver smiled at her. "I'll make tea" Mai announced, and she quickly ran to the kitchen.
"Sure, thank you" Oliver called after her.
Mai then came out a minute later with the tea. "You can sit down you know" Mai said slyly.
"Thanks" Oliver nodded, taking his tea.
Mai was a little... upset? ...with his response. He was being polite, he wasn't even fighting back like normal. But it's not like it was the best time and he did just lose his memory.
"So on the case, I know we're meant to cleanse the house of ghosts, but how do we do that?" Oliver asked. Mai was very amused.
"Well first we work out what the spirit is, and then we get Ayako, Monk or John to cleanse it normally but not always" Mai explained, to the best of her ability.
"Ok, well we can talk more when we get there, but Lin will be here soon anyway" And almost as if planed, there was a knock on the door.
"Well it sounds like you where right" Mai giggled, then ran to the door and there was Lin. Mai went to grab her bags only to see that Oliver had beat her to it. Mai thanked him and the three walked to the van...
