Chapter 6: Die Schöne und der Vampir.
Herman somewhat missed Brazil. The jungle base may have been monotone and a killer of all things fun as per Major's orders to prepare them for their next war, but now that he had the freedom of doing as he liked and the closest thing to a civilian existence, it was starting to become tiresome.
The noisy lady next door and the overly friendly family across the street were the least of his problems.
Fortunately or not, it really depended on how you looked at it, the problem had a name:
Wilhelmina Murray.
The old soldier cursed Rolf in his head once again and sipped his coffee as the said problem tried to stare holes into his head while Rolf tried to distract himself by watching television, where their little trip had become the 2nd trending topic on Euronews.
Herman wondered if this was how single parents felt.
His eye glossed over the first headlines, before deciding that the paper he had been reading was better suited laying in the trash than on the table. He gently folded the newspaper in two, and then threw it into the bin.
Rolf looked as if he was about to protest, but Herman shot him a disbelieving stare.
"I hope you're not going to try to convince me that you were going to read that." The Vegetarier smirked as Rolf shrunk; the elder vampire drained his cup of coffee and smiled as the caffeine flooded his system.
Now it was time to address the elephant in the room.
"Since Mina has a different diet than us, we need to come up with a solution. Does anyone have any ideas?"
Mina immediately paled and Rolf tugged at the collar of his shirt while Herman calmly buttered his toast. The silence reigned in the room, while the one eyed sniper prepared his meal; the only sound in the kitchen was coming from either Herman's chewing or the Television in the living room.
"I see we plan to be productive today." He said, wiping the crumbs from his face "We can always try to get a deal with the blood banks, but that would be time consuming"
"What about animal blood?" Mina asked.
Herman scratched his stubble and shrugged "Who knows, but I doubt that you'll get much out of it, but either way it's worth a try. Now that this is out of the way, Mina" he addressed the vampiress "What do you want your new name to be?"
"I beg your pardon?" Mina asked, clearly confused. The SS officer sighed and rubbed his temples and explained calmly "You're going to need a new identity, since you have been dead to the world for nearly a century."
The woman in front of him cringed and Herman thought that he understood what she was feeling in her heart. Rolf had acted like this, a long time ago, but when the 50's came he had mellowed out. The loss of a name was horrible and to one who had to come to terms of being a monster from myths and the sudden realisation of a world that had moved on without you, most definitely would be terrifying.
He and Rolf had 60 years to deal with the latter, as for the former- they had been monsters well before that.
"You can keep your name. It's common enough nowadays. You can play it off as your parents being "Dracula" fans, but the surname will have to go, there's plenty of nosy people nowadays." Herman placated her. He stood up and picked up his dishes and the empty cup of coffee, with the intent of delivering them in the sink. Having done that the invalid leisurely strolled to the door leading him outside.
"When you have decided tell Rolf to call me and give me your answer." The Vegetarier threw over his shoulder and then he was gone.
Rolf shifted uneasy in his seat as Mina stared at her now lukewarm tea in front of her. The youth's thoughts were racing to bring her out of her self-induced isolation. He knew what she was going through as he had gone through the same. Yes, maybe this could help her after all, he had needed a wake up call, she did as well.
"Fraulein, stop it." He said, making her avert her eyes from the tea cup. "I know you want the tea to be hot again, but your glare won't heat it." The youth smiled at the slightly upturned corners of her lips as the vampires turned to face him.
"I was not thinking about my tea."
"You were thinking about something else, weren't you?" Mina's budding smile vanished immediately, but before she could protest, Rolf was already speaking.
"Do you want to hear a story?" He asked quietly.
The Englishwoman nodded tentatively, and the son of the Bavarian smiled sadly.
"Is a one with a happy ending?" she asked
"It could be as it is still unending" He smiled a sad smile.
"Tell me the beginning, then."
"Well… I'm not much of a story teller, but I'll do my best." Rolf smiled and started boisterously
"It was in 1926. a boy was born. He was born in an alpine homestead south from Munich. His family were simple shepherds and it was an honest living. The boy worked and learned the trade of sheep herding from his father. He worked hard in the city and by the end of the summer before the war he had enough money for a motorbike. His parents chastised him, while his friends praised him. Despite being the dutiful son, he wanted freedom. One day when he was riding his iron steed, being the unruly beast that he was he almost ran over a girl, that had been walking on that road. She called the boy "arschmithoren", "dumkopf" and other hurtful names, but that made the boy stop and apologise."
"What did those words mean Rolf?" she asked, clearly engrossed into the story.
"The first one was meant an asshole with ears and other a moron, she meant them half-heartedly." Rolf explained, drawing a small giggle from her.
"So, what happened next?"
"The boy offered her a lift to wherever she had been going. She had been going back to the bus stop to get home from visiting her aunt. He offered her a lift and she didn't decline. They sped through the hills and narrow cobblestone roads, until they got to the city. There they were caught by the police. Immediately they were taken to the police station."
"He didn't get hurt, did he?" Mina asked with anticipation. At this Rolf smirked and shook his head.
"There was an inspector there who was said to be tough as nails. He was said to carry around a steel truncheon and have no mercy on the criminal no matter the crime, but when he saw the pair he could only gape like a fish. The girl ran and hugged the man and told the boy not to be afraid. That was only her uncle Rudi. The inspector cursed loudly and then let the boy go without paying a fine. As the boy left the station he found a piece of paper in his pocket. In a neat cursive there was an address written on a small piece of paper with a time.
So the boy rode home. Next time he saw her was when she was wearing a shirt and a pair of slacks, unbecoming of a lady. She asked where would they ride next. The boy didn't have to think long and hard about it, he asked her where would she like to go, but she only smiled and hopped onto the bike. They rode and rode, until they happened upon a small Alpine lodge, abandoned, with a lone bench facing the city. They both knew that there was something in the night air. They promised themselves to one another as the tanks chased the brits and the French off the continent. Later the boy joined the army and then he was drafted into an order of twin thunderbolts. Bearing skull and bones, he rode across the battlefields like the knight of old, slaying the ones wishing his second heart harm. When the war was coming to an end, he knew that there may not be time for them to wed and bond their hearts together, so he told her to meet him where they laid under the stars, but then the capitol was under siege from all sides and he never got to that lodge in the Alps."
"That's sad" Mina said solemnly. Rolf nodded at this and continued the tale
"He was stuffed into an underwater ship with his fellows and sent off to a place far away, unable to see his love. In the cave in the jungle he met a man. Dark and brooding, with one azure eye that bore the hole into that boy. The boy was angry and lashed out. He cursed and spit, yet the man remained calm and smacked him up on the back of his head. The one eyed man taught him and gave him a task: to see her once again. The man didn't lie, but soon enough the boy discovered a gruesome truth. He could no longer age. With this came a horrible realisation- she would age and scatter to the winds, while he would remain until the ground under him turn into dust. He never knew of her again until the crusade against the Dragon. She had waited for him in the lodge until she couldn't no more."
Tears were clouding Mina's eyes and Rolf was sliding the cold piece of sausage across the dish.
"When he returned home with his friend they went to find their order's hopes, instead they found a maiden who hadn't been saved from the Dragon. The boy then knew that she needed to be saved and it's what he did."
"If this story is to have a happy ending then it must be quite the one then." Mina bit out. Rolf snorted and snatched her tea across the table, downing it instantly.
"Only if happy endings would come that often." The super-soldier smiled humourlessly.
"The boy and the maiden will get their happy ending" Mina said quietly
"Huh?" Rolf asked, and Mina instantly regretted it as a smile bloomed again and there was glint in his eye that was too familiar for her liking.
"Repeat that, will you?" Rolf absolutely beamed.
"It's nothing." She protested and shook her head. Rolf smiled at this and stood up from the table, picking up his dishes and throwing them into the sink.
He invaded her personal space and grabbed her by the hand.
"Where are you taking me?!" she squeaked as the blonde dragged her to the living room, where a sleek black tab was laying on the coffee table.
"Sit down" Rolf cheerfully ordered and once Mina had sat down on the couch, he joined her, pushing the vampiress a bit to get better access to the device.
"You see Mina, the world has changed a lot since you lived and me being the younger one means that I will be able to teach a lot to a granny like you"
A loud smack echoed across the living room and with it a crack of bone breaking, followed by a feminine gasp and even more laughter.
"Did anyone tell you that you have a mean right hook for a lady, Mina?"
Later when Herman would arrive, he wouldn't be surprised by the mess the two had made in the living room. He knew Rolf well enough.
