I'm back.
Medda Larkin sat in her dimly lit dressing room. Looking out the window, she saw the sun peeking out over the tops of the buildings. It had been a very long night involving not much sleep. Sheet music scattered the floor and unopened envelopes with unpaid bills made a mountain of themselves at her vanity. Medda rose and walked over to the window. She smiled at the few small flowers she was starting to grow in her windowsill; for gardening was the one thing that continued to keep her going through tough days. "Look at you pretty little things; Small yet so beautiful." She smiled to herself.
"Goodmorning Miss Medda!" Romeo said as he walked in. He knocked at her door but without an answer he decided to come in anyways. "Romeo!" Medda exclaimed. She looked outside, having the rising sun as a reminder for how early it was. "It's so early!" She sighed and took a seat on the small red velvet chair that was placed in a corner. Medda patted the spot next to her, signaling Romeo to come and sit. As he did Medda continued with, "What's wrong, honey? I know you wouldn't come to me this early unless there was a problem. Anxiety keeping you awake I'm guessing?"
"Oh Medda I enjoyed something better than sleep last night!" Romeo stood up and starting pacing around the room, a smile plastered on his face. "Ohhhh." A smirk formed on Medda's face. "Out with Rosie I'm assuming?" "HA! Rosie who!? Nah, Medda, that girl, like the past, is behind me." He replied. Romeo made his way over to the window, leaning on the ledge and watching the sunrise. "I spent my night in Brooklyn." "YOU WHAT!?"Medda was on her feet, watching the young newsie with wide eyes.
She sat back down and put her head in her hands. "Romeo what are you talking about? You're confusing me. Brooklyn and Manhattan do not mix remember?" "Aw, Medda." Romeo knelt by the performer's chair. "I love the sister of the Brooklyn leader's girlfriend. I love her and she loves me." He grabbed Medda's hands. "Please Miss Medda, you'se have connections. We'se wants to be married. Taday." "Romeo, oh Romeo." Medda sighed and patted his hand. "Wasn't it about 2 days ago you were comin' to be cryin' over Rosie? I don't think you're over her yet, sweetie. My advice never was to get rid of your love and replace Rosie with another girl!"
Romeo's grip on Medda's hands tightened. "Please, Miss Medda, please. I love her. She loves me. We'se just wants to be happy with each other." Medda sighed away and reluctantly accepted to help her friend plan his secret wedding. "Maybe this is for the better." Medda started. "Maybe the bonding of two Newsies will help the feud of your boroughs." Romeo grinned from ear to ear. He quickly stood up. "Thank you! You won't regret this Medda!" He started for the door before Medda stopped him. "Romeo!" She called and he turned to face her. "Be careful, okay?" He just smiled and ran out the door. Be careful? Why did he have to be careful? In a few hours, he'd be the happiest person in New York City.
