I still don't own the Host
Ians POV
"Dude!" Jared yelled as my shovel fell to the ground, almost hitting him,"Watch it!"
"Sorry," I said grabbing the shovel, I hard as I tried I couldn't seem to stay focused today.
"The baby's coming!" I heard a voice call running towards me and Jared. I took off running to the hospital not bothering to see who was running towards us. I needed to be there now. I ran through the caves and everything slowed down. I think of Wanda as the cave walls swirled around me. I think of the pain and excitement she must be feeling, I feel the anticipation, joy and fear course through my body as my feet beat a steady rhythm on the ground. It feels like an eternity until I finally got there and saw her lying there.
She looked so beautiful, even with the look of pain on her face and her hair drenched in sweat she still looked as if she had just been sent down from heaven. I ran up to her, held her hand and kissed her head.
"I'm here," I whispered in her ear, "You can do this. I love you."
"Ian," She smiled up at me, "You're here."
"Of course I am, love." I assured her and stroked her hair back off her forehead.
She opened her mouth to say something but the words were drowned out by a scream. I looked nervously at Doc as she squeezed my hand.
"It's just a contraction." Evie said reassuring me as she worked to make Wanda more comfortable.
"Though they are getting closer together, shes progressing a lot quicker than expected, the baby will be here soon." Doc, said moving in front of Wanda.
"How soon?" Wanda pants as the contraction came to an end.
"Breathe" Evie comforted Wanda stroking her arm.
"This isn't right," I looked worriedly at Doc, " They shouldn't be that close together this soon right?" I didn't know much about giving birth but I knew it takes a while, this was happening fast.
"There is no reason to panic yet," Doc soothed me, "But Wanda, you are progressing quite quickly so you might have to start pushing here in a little bit."
I felt fear course up my spine at Doc's words. This is happening. The baby is coming. I look around at the less than sterile cave and feel the familiar fear that has been haunting me for the last months, what if the baby doesn't make it? What if Wanda doesn't make it?
It felt like weeks rather than hours that we were there in that cave as Wanda pushed through her contractions and I was left to worry about every possible thing that could go wrong. I was shaken out of my thoughts by Wanda screaming and a chorus of pushes and breathes, but that's not what I am focused on. I was only focused on the look on her face, the look of pain on that beautiful face. All I wanted to do was to push the pain away and hold her in my arms, but I know I can't. I meet her eyes and stare straight into them and at that moment we completely understand each other. We both knew that she was in pain, but we knew it was worth it. We were going to be parents, and our child was worth all the pain in the world.
It stayed like that for a while, I don't know how long, I said push and breathe at the right time but all I could think about is the our child that was about to be born. All of the sudden Doc shouted and I snapped my head towards him.
"One more big push," He coached Wanda. The world narrowed down to nothing but waiting for the baby. Suddenly a head burst out, and it was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. Even its shrill cry was the most beautiful and hypnotic sound I had ever heard.
I looked at the little child as Doc cut the cord and began to wipe off the beautiful baby. The world's most beautiful baby, and she is my daughter.
Doc and Evie cleaned her off and handed her over to Wanda to hold. The look of love in Wanda's eyes filled my heart with joy and I knew I could spend eternity staring at this picture of my girls. Of my family. Of my life.
"Hi sweet girl." Wanda smiled "What should we call you?"
"How about Pacey or Ember?" I say staring at the beautiful creature before me.
"I like Pacey!" Wanda smiles, "What do you think, sweetie? Pacey Rose O'Shea!"
"A beautiful name for a beautiful girl!" I kissed Wanda's head. "Pacey Rose I've waited 9 months to meet you, and now you're here and you are so beautiful and I promise I won't let anything happen to you." I bent down to kiss Pacey's little head,"Not one thing."
