Chapter. 8

The sun hung high in the sky, warming everything it touched, in spite of this truth it did very little to warm the tundra.

Zane gently pet his zinogre companion as the ship they rode carried them closer to the frozen land. "It's okay, we go in, get what we need and leave. Ten minutes tops." Fenrir looked up at Zane, who scratched its ear to the stygian calm.

The deck doors opened to reveal Ivy coming up deck, she breathed in the icy salt air. Feeling better to be outside till she spotted her brother. "Do you have to take Fenrir everywhere?""

"How else are we going to get better if I leave him home, besides who would look after Fenrir? Not you."

"Starting to regret taking him in yet?" Ivy strolled to the railing, watching the waves. Fenrir hopped off of Zane to fallow his sister. "No." Ivy stepped away but Fenrir kept fallowing, sniffing her boots. "What is wrong with your pet?"

Zane got up and grabbed Ivy's arm to drag her down. "Just let him get to know you."

Ivy reluctantly did as he said, sheheld her hand out then pulled it back when Fenrir tried to bite it. She pushed Zane back and stood up. "You see? It's still a wild beast."

"He's an animal sis he can sense that you ment him harm." Zane pointed to her other hand resting at her side. "And you hink I didn't see you going for your knife?"

Ivy grumbled, looking at the sea. Zane kneeled beside his zinogre to scratch its ears. "See how calm he is, he's not going to trust you unless you trust him."

"That's it's clear we're not going to get along."

"What is with you!?" The brother stood up to his sister. "You can't keep shuting people out, when are you going to open up again and be the Ivy I grew up with?"

Ivy backhanded Zane in the face. "No YOU need to grow up, the past is over. We're on our own now, that means having to get tough and cutting somethings loose."

"So you're idea of being strong is having no ties? No one to turn too?" Zane slapped Ivy across her face. "And don't ever hit me, you know I can return the favor."

"Just focus on our hunt, it's been a month since you fought anything as big as that rathian."

"That doesn't mean my skills have been lacking, besides a lagombi shouldn't mean anything to you G rank." Ivy threw her hands up as she walked away.

...

Once on shore Zane and Fenrir jumped off the ship while Ivy waited for the plank to be ready. At the camp Ivy opened the chest and handed some first aids and hot drinks to her brother, Zane opened two of the drinks, one for himself and the the other for Fenrir.

Ivy eyed them confusingly. "Does Fenrir really need that?"

"Cleary you never studied the monsters you kill." Zane finished giving the zinogre its drink and marched on.

Ivy lead the way, finding the lagombi in no time. The senior motioned her brother to hide behind a fallen tree with her. "Now I'm going to engage, you stay behind and await directions. Just like we uses to do it."

"One problem, I'm a hunters too. I'm not going to stay behind and let you do all the work."

"Zane we're not doing this, I'm your superior and you will do as I say." Zane waved her and started sneaking towards the lagombi, Fenrir at his side. "Zane, Zane get back here!"

Zane crept up to the lagombi, stabbing it in the side. When the monster turned to him Fenrir slapped it the face with its tail, leaped on the lagombi's head and bit its ear.

The lagombi stood on its hind legs and fell backwards, Fenrir let go to avoid hitting the ground then jumped on he lagombi, the zinogre sunk its teeth into the neck and ripped the bunny's throut out ear. Zane stabbed the beast in the wound to end its suffering.

Ivy came out of hiding to rejoin her brother. "That was beautiful, Fenrir! Who's awesome? You are." Ivy began carving the fallen beast, when she got her parts Zane cut open the lagombi's side, exposing the meat for Fenrir.

"You really care about that zinogre."

Zane held his hand towards the fallen pery. "Look what he did, all I did was give him an opening."

...

The three returned to the camp to wait for the ship home, Ivy sat inside the tent while Zane was by the fire shapening his sword. While she watched the icebergs float by Fenrir came to see her. "Hello, Zane's out there go bother him." The stygian tilted its head to her.

Fenrir looked like a lost puppy to Ivy, she patted her lap and Fenrir jumped on her. Ivy pet the zinogre as it fell asleep. "I guess you can be cute sometimes."

Zane wear a wide girn when he heard his sister.

When the ship finally arrived Zane clapped his hands and Fenrir jumped to his side. "So how's that heart of steel." Ivy glared at her brother. "Told you Fenrir was a big softy."

"He's, very soft." Ivy kneeled down, Fenrir lifted its head for her to scratch its chin. "I would like to help, raise himif that's okay."

"Of course you can! Told you, you just had to give him a chance." Fenrir put its front pews on Ivy's chest, licking her face. Zane was glad that his sister started to open up.

...

The siblings returned home that afternoon, Zane began planting a dracobarry bush in the backyard while Ivy was teaching Fenrir commands.

Zane stopped when Ivy knocked on the door frame. "Zane! Guild master is here." He dropped the shovel with a fusterated sigh.

"What can I do for you uncle." Zane stepped inside with the rest of his family.

"Just came by to see how you and your zinogre are." The monster barked at him. "He seems to be doing well, has anything happened?"

"We're doing, just got the bush I ordered and Ivy is finally getting to know Fenrir."

"Have you taken him hunting?"

"Killed a lagombi on his own."

Agil nodded to the monster before him. "That's quite an accomplishment for one so little."

"And Fenrir is only going to get bigger and better." The boy kneeled and pet his stygian. "So what do you think of us now?"

"Definitely showing promise. I've noticed you haven't come by the guild building since you got your monster, I want you to come by tomorrow."

"I can't do that, someone there might hurt Fenrir, I'm not letting him go somewhere he can't fight back."

"That's an easy one, Ivy can watch him for the day."

"What!" Ivy dashed into the room. "My friends need me for a ivory lagiacrus hunt tomorrow!"

The elder man patter her arm. "I'll explain it to them, it's important that I speak to Zane."

The young woman hung her head. "Very well guild master."

"Thank you, that's all from me. See you tomorrow Zane." Agil patted his nephew's head on his way out.

"Could you stop doing that? I'm not a kid anymore." Zane discide to return to his room, with Fenrir right behind.
