Fabian POV
Eventually we have to come up for air.
"Wow." we both said at the same time.
Silence.
We both laughed nervously.
"So what now?" Nina asked.
"Why don't we try properly catch up? I want to know all the small, irrelevant details of your life for the past year and a half."
Stalker much?
"Me too! I want to know everything!"
Phew. We can both be stalkers together.
"You start. What happened when you came back from Anubis House after Sixth Form?"
"Well, after you told me you couldn't come to visit, I was feeling... weird. Obviously I understood why you couldn't come but I was really looking forward to your visit..." Nina's face slowly turned scarlet.
I could feel mine doing the same.
We were both thinking about what we planned to do on my visit...
"You know I really wanted to come.."
"Of course! Honestly, I understand. But I ended up burying myself in research about the Chosen One and the Osirian and I found out we couldn't stay in the same place. I started to think Eddie and I would have to draw straws or something.. but then Gran got diagnosed with a brain tumour. It was pretty much worse case scenario. I guess the only upside was that her sickness was in no way evil-spirit induced.
"I knew I had to stay and take care of her, despite her wanting me to go back and live my life. But with this and the whole Eddie thing and a totally irrational fear that you didn't come to America because you didn't want visit me, I figured the best thing to do was to stay home and write you that letter."
"Oh Nina, I'm so sorry... I worked five jobs that summer trying to scrape together enough money to go to America but it just wasn't enough."
"I promise, that's ok. Besides, you're in America now"
"Right."
The big, stupid grins were back again.
"So anyway, I met Eddie and told him all I knew about the whole Chosen One-Osirian thing and he went back to England."
"Yeah, and when the term started, Patricia was convinced you two had had some, secret summer romance, or something and that's why you didn't come back. We ransacked his room and everything!" I added.
"No way! Me and Eddie! Can you imagine?"
If felt so good to laugh with her again.
"Well, remember, I was completely heartbroken! You dumped me in a letter!"
"My bad."
"Ha ha. But everything worked out in the end I guess."
"I guess."
The ghost of good, old-fashioned laughter lingered on our lips.
I have a question I'm dying to ask her.
Control yourself, Fabian!
It's no use.
"Can I ask you something? I'm trying really hard not to, but I'm sorry. I have a completely unavoidable question for you."
She started to look serious.
"What is it?"
"Can I kiss you again?"
She smiled.
"I thought you'd never ask..."
