Chapter 7-Drake's Decision

April 30, 2011

10:00 pm

Drake looked down at his PDA. He had a countdown until the missile strike, they had forty-two hours left. He looked over at David and the two others he was with, Simon and Jeanette. The three were currently trying to plan their next action to get out of the police station. Drake heard his PDA beep. He pressed the button on his headset.

"This is Agent Harris."

A moment later the operator's voice came through.

"Agent Harris, we have just received confirmation that the Military have deployed a special operations team into the city. You are their target."

Drake looked back at the other's.

"It's the Horsemen unit right?"

"Yes. Our satellite confirms three of the four moving towards your position. They will be on you within half an hour."

Drake cocked his head slightly.

"Three? Which one is missing?"

"Our last live feed showed Horsemen Unit Death separating from his companions and entering a warehouse through a fire escape."

Drake nodded to himself.

"Alright. I have three civilians with me inside the police station, I'll need some form of extraction for them."

"Roger that Agent Harris, I'll contact you if we can get clearance for a civilian extraction. Stand by."

The line cut off. Drake turned to see David coming towards him. He did not look pleased.

"What do you mean extraction? My two other boys are still out there!"

Drake gave David a hard look. Causing David to back down slightly.

"I know it's hard to except. But you have no idea who is coming after me right as we speak. They won't hesitate to kill anyone of you, alone I have a chance. You three will only be a liability."

Simon and Jeanette came over to stand by David. Jeanette gave Drake a pleading look.

"Mr. Harris?"

Drake held up his hand, silencing Jeanette.

"Just Drake, the current situation hardly calls for formalities."

Jeanette nodded, adjusting her glasses.

"Please Drake, Simon's brothers and my sisters are still out in the city, we need to find them and you are the only one who can get us through this…so please help us."

Jeanette reached out and took hold of Drake's hand. He stared into her pleading eyes and found himself unable to turn away. Drake found himself pulled into her violet colored eyes. He couldn't refuse her even if he tried.

"Alright you three can come with me, but you do what I say at all times. It's only going to get harder from here on out."

Drake took the duffel from David, sitting it down on the desk. Opening it he took out two Glock 19 handguns. He handed one to Simon and the other to Jeanette. He gave them a quick rundown of how to use the handgun. He watched them load the magazines and slide them into the handguns. He closed up the duffel and handed it back to David.

"David will be in charge of the ammunition, don't fire recklessly. Converse your ammunition, and remember…aim for the head."

Drake went over to the window leading to the fire escape. He checked the fire escape and found it clear. Apparently, the zombies on the roof had yet to find their way onto the fire escape. He climbed out of the window onto the fire escape. He shined his light down towards the ground. It was clear. He turned the light off and went back to the window.

"Alright the area around the ground level is clear, let's get down there and move out of this area."

One by one David, Simon and Jeanette made their way out onto the fire escape. Drake went first, then Jeanette and Simon, followed last by David. Once they settled on to the ground Drake pulled up the map on his PDA, he studied the screen for a minute before putting it away. He turned to David.

"We are going to head to a hunting store not too far from here. It looks to be an easily defendable location."

Drake shouldered his M4 rifle, he signaled for the others to follow him closely. He scanned the area as they went. Surprisingly no infected were behind the station, he supposed it had to do with the beacons in the city keeping the majority of infected in the set areas. They arrived at the edge of the police station, Drake pushed himself against the wall. The others did as he did. Drake peeked around the corner looking out onto the main street. He guessed close to twenty infected were wondering around the street, the majority more than likely finding their way into the police station.

"We can use that armored car to get to our destination without much delay."

Drake turned around to look at Simon who had spoken. Drake could tell the young munk was very intelligent, and that he was probably trying to think three steps ahead of the situation. Drake brought his attention back to the street, more specifically the armored transport vehicle parked at the end of the street. It was a cash transport, it would suffice.

"It will attract a lot of attention from the infected, but we can abandon it before we get to the hunting store."

The four quickly covered the distance to the armored transport. Drake climbed into the driver's seat, while the others climbed into the back. Drake found the keys still in the ignition. He started the armored transport and put it into drive. The loud engine caught the attention of the infected around the area, slowly they began shuffling towards the transport. Drake turned the steering wheel, pressing down on the gas pedal. The large vehicle slowly began moving forward, gently gaining speed. Drake ran over several infected. Their bodies making a wet crunching sound as the large vehicle drove over them.

"Hold on back there! I'm going to speed up!"

Drake pressed further down onto the gas. The armored vehicles speed increased to just under forty miles per hour. He drove through crowds of infected, the armored vehicle easily mowing them down. Drake turned down several streets, and after a few minutes on the road he saw the hunting store come into view. He pressed on the brakes slowing to a stop.

"Everyone out! We are here!"

Drake climbed out of the front while the others got out of the back. They started moving towards the store.

Bang!

"AHH!"

Drake spun around bringing up his rifle looking for the source of the gunshot. He looked over and saw Simon on the ground holding his shoulder. Blood slowly seeping through his shirt. Jeanette rushed to Simon's side. As did Dave. Drake saw two figures step out of the dark in front of them, both had M4 rifle like his trained on him. Drake aimed at them.

"Don't do anything hasty Agent Harris. Or else this will get very messy."

Drake turned his head to look behind him. Another figure stepped out from the shadows behind them. This one aiming a M249 light machine gun at them. Drake didn't lower his rifle as he glared at the large man behind them.

"War…"

The man called War gave a small smile.

"Glad to see you remember me."

He looked at his two teammates.

"Famine, Conquest…Secure Drake."

The two stepped closer to Drake, stopping a few feet from him, weapons aimed at his head. Drake slowly lowered his rifle. He put his hands up, watching War walk over to Dave and the others.

"Leave them alone War. They have nothing to do with your mission."

War chuckled as he aimed his machine gun at Simon.

"Just a little insurance to make sure you don't try anything."

War eyed Jeanette.

"You, if you don't want me to kill your little friend here…you'll come with us. Understood?"

Jeanette slowly nodded.

"All…alright, just don't hurt them."

She stood up, and moved to stand next to Drake. Simon tried to stand, but was kicked by War.

"Stay down! Or I'll spray your brains all over the street!"

War took a step back, aiming the M249 at Dave and Simon.

"Get up and walk away…now."

David looked over at Drake, who nodded for him to go ahead and take Simon away from the area.

"Don't worry David, they aren't interested in you all. They'll let Jeanette go as soon as they deal with me."

Dave helped Simon up, who tried to resist.

"Jeanette…"

Jeanette gave Simon a weak smile.

"It's alright Simon. I'll be alright, you go with Dave and take care of your shoulder."

David took Simon and began heading down away from them. War turned back to Drake and Jeanette.

"Alright, you two move."

Famine took Drake's rifle and handgun, as well as his combat knife. Famine also took Jeanette's handgun. Infected began to shuffle into the area, attracted by the noise. Drake turned his head but could no longer see David and Simon. He looked over at Jeanette, she looked terrified. Before he could catch himself, he had reached his hand out to grasp hers. Startled she looked up at him.

"Don't worry Jeanette, I'll make sure I get you out of this. Promise."

War stepped up behind them. Nudging Drake forward.

"Get moving. Or the girl gets one in the back of the knee."

The five slowly started off at a slow jog, with Famine and Conquest in the front. Drake and Jeanette in the middle, and War bringing up the rear.

Dave rounded the corner with Simon, he spotted a pharmacy across the street. He quickly made his way over and found that the door was unlocked. He opened it, moving inside with Simon. He shut the door and locked it. He sat Simon down, along with the duffle.

"Stay here. I'm going to check out the area, and find something we can use for your shoulder."

Simon nodded, gritting his teeth in pain.

"Alright, but hurry…we can't let them get away, we have to get Jeanette back."

David nodded.

"I know, but first I need to take care of you."

David stood up, taking his sig sauer from its holster. He could see decently well in the pharmacy, as some lights were still on. Most likely the emergency lights. He made his way down the center aisle. He found a few over the counter pain medications. He took a bottle of the slightly stronger ones. He continued down the aisle. He made in to the end. David checked the other two aisles on the left and right, he found some bandages. He went back to Simon at the front. Simon looked up as David approached him.

"Did you find anything useful?"

David popped open the cap on the pain killers, taking two out.

"I'm sure there is something else in the back, but for now take these. They will help with the pain."

David put the pain killers into Simon's mouth. Simon brought his head up a little and swallowed. David watched his middle son worriedly.

"It'll take some time for it to kick in. Are you alright to stay here while I look in the back?"

Simon nodded.

"I'll be alright."

David stood up and headed back down the center aisle. He went to the door that led into the back of the pharmacy. It was unlocked. David opened the door gently, looking into back area. Nothing. He found a medical bag on the floor, he picked it up off the floor and quickly made his way back to Simon.

"I found a medical bag in the back. It looked like there was some higher-grade medicine in the back, do you feel like you'll need it."

Simon chuckled.

"Under normal circumstances I would gladly take them, but I don't want to take anything that will slow me down. Just clean the wound and bandage it."

David nodded and sat the medical bag down, he opened it and pulled out a pair of sterile tweezers. Simon saw them and shook his head.

"I already checked the wound…it feels like it went completely through."

David checked the wound under Simon's shirt. He was right, it was a complete through and through. David took out a bottle of alcohol. He popped the cap and poured some alcohol on a sterile pad. He cleaned the front and back of the wound. Simon hissed.

"Shit. That stings…"

David wrapped the wound with some thick bandages and tied it off.

"Well that should do until we get out of here."

David looked outside and saw that several zombies had moved into the area. He sighed, he didn't have the first clue as to what to do now. In the short time, he had been with Drake, he didn't have to worry about planning how to survive. The only thing he knew for certain was that he had to find Alvin and Theodore.

Drake sat next to Jeanette in a dark room. He could hear War talking to Famine and Conquest. War was leaving with Famine to try and locate the fourth Horseman, Death. Conquest was to keep them secure. Drake heard a door open and close. Drake turned his head towards Jeanette. He could feel her shivering. He put his hand on her knee, he spoke in a whisper.

"Jeanette…I'm going to get Conquest to come in here and I will neutralize him. Then we'll get out of here."

Jeanette calmed down at Drake's confident touch.

"How will you get him to come in here?"

Drake felt his face heat up.

"Just make sure you make enough noise for him to come in here."

Jeanette was confused.

"What do you mea-!"

Drake pressed his lips against Jeanette's. He felt an electric spark pass between them.

Jeanette felt Drake's lips press against hers, and something inside her felt like fire.

She quickly caught herself and push him away from her.

"What! What are you doing!?"

Drake felt a loss when Jeanette pushed him away. He didn't expect a reaction when he kissed her, it was shocking. His ears picked up Conquest moving towards the door. He stood up and started hitting the wall and stomping on the ground. He saw the door start to open. Drake covered the distance as the door opened fully and tackled Conquest. They struggled for a minute before Drake put him in a sleeper hold and caused him to pass out. Drake stood up and Quickly grabbed up his equipment and ammunition. He grabbed Jeanette's glock 19.

"Jeanette let's hurry out of here."

She walked into the room and Drake handed her the handgun.

"Did…did you feel anything when…when you kissed me?"

Drake could see the blush on her face, before he could give anything away with his own reaction he turned away. He shouldered his M4.

"It was a distraction to get Conquest to open the door."

Drake opened the door to get out of the building they were in.

"Let's get out of here…"
