Chapter 8
Aiden paused as he hopped out of his truck and bent over to check his teeth in the side view mirror. He walked around to the passenger side and grabbed the bouquet of roses he had picked up along the way. He knew things had to be turning around – Kyla wouldn't have texted him to come over if they hadn't.
He took a deep breath as he turned to walk up to the Davies mansion bouncing from side to side. It had been officially three months since Kyla had ended things so abruptly and he hoped that the space they had had let her sort out whatever it was that made her change her mind about him. He missed her and wanted things to go back to how they used to be.
He rang the bell as he rolled back onto his heels. He heard some muffled talking inside and assumed it was Ashley and Kyla, seeing as Christine was rarely ever home. He could only remember seeing the woman once in his life. The talking was still going on and he resisted the urge to knock – knowing they were close enough to the door to hear it. He was growing impatient, but didn't want to risk his opportunity to speak to Kyla before it even began so he held his breath and waited.
Finally, the door opened and Aiden frowned as Ashley stood in front of him. He had expected Kyla to greet him, since she wanted to talk so bad.
"Hey Aid," she said with a hesitant smile, stepping aside to allow him into their foyer.
"Where's Kyla?" Aiden asked, completely ignoring Ashley's greeting.
"So listen, you can wait in her room for her but she's not feeling too well at the moment so you might have to wait for a few minutes in there."
Aiden nodded as he headed up the stairs towards the familiar room. He sat on the bed and glanced around with his foot bouncing the the flowers next to him. A letterman jacket on the chair in the corner of the room caught his eye and he stood confused as he walked over the pick it up.
"Carlin?"
"Are you snooping Aiden? Always thought you were more mature," he heard Kyla's voice as he whipped around holding the letterman.
"What the hell is this Ky?! Since when do you ever hang out with Glen?" Aiden asked trying to keep his voice below a shout. He could feel the back of his neck beginning to heat up and his body tense up. Kyla had wanted to talk but surely it couldn't be just to break his heart all over again could it?
"Aiden, that's not important – look just sit down," Kyla said as she curled up into herself on the bed. She glanced at the flowers but didn't move to pick them up and didn't say anything. Aiden started towards the bed but thought better of it and hesitantly sat in the chair dropping Glen's jacket to the floor, a move that Kyla rolled her eyes at. He took a deep breath and looked up at Kyla, deciding to let her speak.
He watched as she fiddled with her hands, suddenly not looking at him. That was odd because if there was one thing Kyla was not, it was being unsure of herself. He noticed that there were bags under her eyes and she wasn't as dressed up as she usually liked to be either. He saw her hesitating to speak; she kept opening her mouth like she was about to start but eventually just shut it and kept staring at her hands.
"Ky, what's wrong? Are you okay?" He asked as he scooted to the edge of the chair, ready to move to the bed but not wanted to overstep his boundaries. Kyla's head shot up and stared at him. She pursed her lips and sighed.
"I'm pregnant –"
"What?!"
"-And I'm having an abortion tomorrow. You can come, but you can't try to talk me out of it. Ashley will be there tomorrow too. I don't want to wait any longer."
Aiden stood and ran a hand through his hair. Pregnant? He was angry Kyla had kept this from him but he also knew she was probably freaking out.
"Is this why you ended things? Ky, we could've worked this out" he said after what felt like hours.
He heard her sigh, "Partially, but Aiden – we're seventeen. People don't always stay together. I think it says a lot more that Ashley talked me into telling you than anything else."
He nodded and sighed, part of him knew Kyla was right, but another part of him felt like maybe he and Kyla could've been an exception. He loved her so much – it hurt that she didn't trust him to tell him this but also that she didn't want to be with him.
"I'll go with you," he said, deciding not to tell Kyla his inner thoughts – she had way too much on her plate to deal with his hurt feelings.
"That's it Aid?" She asked, he could hear the shock in her voice and he felt embarrassed. If she was expecting that much more of a reaction maybe, he hadn't always been the most selfless – maybe.
"Well, yeah. I want to be there but there's not much more to say, is there?" He asked with more bite than intended.
"It seems as if you have more to say?" Kyla said. Aiden sighed.
"Are you and Glen together?" he spat out before he could stop himself.
"How is that relevant?"
"So you are?"
"No, we aren't, but if we are or ever are in the future it has nothing to do with you and me and what this conversation is actually about."
"Fine, okay."
They stared at each other and Aiden felt like he could literally feel the room grow tenser, so he took a deep breath to calm himself.
"What time tomorrow, and do you need anything? Should I bring anything?" he asked. He watched as Kyla wiped her eyes on her sweatshirt sleeve and he took three quick strides to the side of the bed where she was sitting. He wrapped his arms around her and tried to keep from tearing up himself. Despite everything, he knew he would always have a place in his heart for Kyla.
"Don't cry Ky, we'll get through this. We'll figure it out."
"I'm so sorry for everything. I hope you know I didn't want this and I'll always care for you," she said through deep breaths against his chest.
"I know Ky."
