Chapter 8

Disclaimer: I don't own the Vampire Diaries. I'm just borrowing.

Note: Previously, in "Hunter's Moon," a black hair is found on the body of Giselle Carson, the latest victim in the Silas murders and Elijah gives Elena what sounds like advice, but seems like something else.

Damon & Elena's House – Later...

Elena sat at the table, a cup of coffee in her hand, not really focusing on anything in particular. She was thinking what Elijah had said to her in the parking lot outside of Anna's office. The words seemed to chill her to the bone. Why the hell would he tell her to keep her guard up around him? She then jumped suddenly when she felt a hand on her shoulder and she turned around to see Damon, relief washing over her.

"Oh, Damon, it's you," she said. "You scared me."

Damon kissed her cheek. "I'm sorry, love, I didn't mean to startle you. But, you did look like you were deep in thought about something."

Elena bit her lip. "It was about what Elijah said in the parking lot earlier."

"He didn't threaten you, did he?" said Damon. "If he threatened you, I swear to God..."

"He didn't threaten me exactly," said Elena. "But, he did say that I shouldn't let my guard down, especially around him. While that didn't sound like a threat, it did kind of bother me." She sighed. "Shit, what have we gotten ourselves into?"

"I know, I don't like it either," said Damon. "Hopefully, we won't have to deal with FBI Guy much longer." He took a seat next to his wife. "Oh, and I sent that hair we found on Giselle Carson's body to the Forensics lab for analysis."

Grateful for the change in subject, Elena said, "And?"

"I think you were right in your theory that Silas has an accomplice," said Damon. "And you wouldn't believe who the owner of said hair was. I'll give you a hint. The last time we saw him was when my brother got shot."

"Mikael?" said Elena. "But, that's impossible, right? He's dead."

Damon shook his head. "No, but you're close. He was working for Mikael."

"Tyler?" said Elena. "Tyler is Silas' accomplice?"

"I know, I was shocked myself when I found out," said Damon. "I was also confused, because I thought for sure that Tyler had been arrested." He tapped his chin thoughtfully with his index finger. "I just don't get how he'd go from being a cop to a criminal."

"I don't get it either," said Elena. "I worked with him on the Special Victims Unit and he didn't seem like the kind of guy who would suddenly go to the dark side." She sighed again. "I guess it goes to show how little you actually know about a person, doesn't it?"

"Yeah, I guess," said Damon. "But, we can't let this deter us from finally solving this case. We have to stick it out and bring Tyler and Silas down before they kill any more innocent people."

Elena nodded. "I agree." She suddenly felt a bit nauseous. "Excuse me."

Before Damon could answer her, she rushed upstairs to the bathroom, where she began to vomit into the toilet. Damon followed after her and when he heard her vomiting, he went into the bathroom and knelt down next to her, pulling her hair back as he rubbed her back gently.

Elena then coughed as she finished, leaning back against him as she flushed the toilet. For a moment, there was silence between them as Damon held her, kissing her hair and comforting her. Finally, he decided to speak.

"Are you okay, cara mia?"

Elena nodded. "I...I think so. The last time I threw up like that was when I was pregnant with Christian and Ana."

"Are you saying that you're..."

"I'm not sure, I'll have to take a pregnancy test to be sure," she replied. "There should be one in the medicine cabinet. I bought one when Caroline and I went shopping. She bought one herself because she thought she was pregnant again as well."

Damon nodded and went to the medicine cabinet to get the pregnancy test that Elena mentioned, handing it to her when he found it. Shakily getting to her feet, she opened the package, took out the strip, provided a urine sample in a cup, and placed the strip in the cup. Then, came the wait. The long, seemingly drawn-out wait to see if they were going to be having another child. Of course, Damon hadn't ruled this sort of thing out entirely. He didn't want Christian and Ana to be his only children, and he was pretty sure Stefan and Caroline didn't want Cora to be their only child either.

He was about to say something to that effect when the time to check the strip came. Elena took the strip out of the cup, looking at it and biting her lip. Then, not meeting her husband's eyes, she said, "It's blue. I'm pregnant."

Damon smiled and hugged her. "Elena, sweetheart, that's wonderful! We're going to have another baby." He saw that she wasn't smiling. "What's wrong? Aren't you happy that we're going to give Christian and Ana a little brother or sister?"

"I am, Damon. I'm deliriously happy," she replied. "It's just...so unexpected, that's all."

Her husband nodded. "Because of the case?"

"Yeah, among other things," said Elena. "But, there's nothing we can do about it now. There's going to be a new baby in the Salvatore house soon and we'll have to be ready for when he or she arrives. We'll definitely have to tell your mother about this, since she's going to want to know that she's going to be getting another grandchild, and we'll have to tell Stefan and Caroline." She sighed. "Shit, so many things to do and in so little time in which to do it."

Damon smiled. "True, but you'll have me with you the whole way, just like you always have." He kissed her. "I love you, Elena."

Elena smiled against his lips and returned his kiss. "I love you too, Damon."

Note: That seems like a good place to end this chapter, doesn't it? This idea came to me before I went to bed last night and I wanted to update. Stay tuned to see what happens next!
