Long time, no update. Here's a quick thing I wrote after rereading this tory and missing what I was doing. I love this little non-chronological story and I like to reread it whenever I"m like ... man ... my writing really sucks. Yeah, it's brief, but I like the details and the idea. Anyways, here we are!

Kick Drum Heart

Annie laughed mercilessly as she ran through the knee high wild grass, the hem of her skirt just barely grazing the fallen sticks and branches scattered on the ground. The wind whipped her wild, red locks around her face, blinding her as she slowed to a jog, glancing over her shoulder.

"Fritz, keep up!" She yelled, her grin as wide as a the ocean.

Thump-thump-thump, thump-thump-thump, thump-thump-thump

Fritz shielded his eyes from glaring sun as he watched her dance across the meadow, twirling and spinning as if she were a school girl. He grinned and took off after her, his signature red and gold scarf flapping in the wind.

"If you'd slow down, I'd be able to catch up to you," He replied, panting as his heart hammered against his ribcage. When was the last time he had run so freely? When was the last time he laughed so carelessly? Annie spun around on her heels, still somehow moving backwards.

Thump-thump-thump, bump-bump-bump, thump-bump-thump

"We're going to be late," she giggled and waved her hands toward the setting sun. "C'mon, slow poke! Miss Veronica is going to start the fireworks any second!"

Fritz shook his head, his unruly red hair falling into his eyes. "Be careful, you're going to fall if you keep —

"Ahh!" Annie yelped as she tripped over a rock and promptly landed on her bum. Fritz bit his lip as he held out his hand, only to be met with a fit of giggles. "Ahahahaha — Oh, Fritz, you should've seen your face! You looked so worried!"

Fritz rolled his eyes and sighed before flopping down next to her. "I looked worried because I was." He said with a coy smile. "I guess this is a fine spot to watch the fireworks anyways — it's more private over here. What's gotten you in such a good mood anyways?" He asked, stretching out on the dewy grass, hands behind his head.

thump-thump, bump-bump, thump-thump

Annie sighed contently, wrapping her arms around her knees as she stared at the sky. The sun was almost gone and the fireflies were just beginning to wake up, their sleepy bodies buzzing around the bushes lethargically.

Fritz watched her intently — the way her eyes glinted in the sunlight, the way her loose curls framed her face — he soaked it all in. Did she always look this beautiful? The farmer shifted to his side and waited for her answer.

"They're just … so romantic, don't you think?" She asked, looking down into his deep, brown eyes.

It was the kind of look Fritz had only ever read about in books — the kind that makes your mouth run dry and your head spin. Now keenly aware of the way his heart was pounding against his chest, he swallowed thickly and tried to think of something witty or smart to say back. Anything to make her laugh — anything to make her look at him like that again.

Thump-ba-bump, thump-ba-bump, thump-ba-bump

"Y-yeah," he said, voice cracking as if he were a prepubescent teen.

"Heh, you're cute when you're flustered."

A lone firework shot into the darkening sky,

"Oh, it's starting," Annie giggled as she fell onto her back and scooted closer to her friend. "Thanks for going with me tonight." She entertained her hand with his and sighed as the fireworks lit up the starry sky.

Thump-ba-bump … thump-ba-bump … thump-ba … bump
