Chapter 7

Alice woke up and sent out all of the wedding invitations, and the delivery of the bridesmaid dresses arrived. She sent those out too. She dressed in a short red dress that stopped at her knees, and slipped on a leather jacket over it. She left her hair down and met with Mavis to discuss the bachelorette party.

She forced her thoughts of Dracula to the back of her mind and kept focused on the planning. Mavis was waiting for her. "Hey, Mavis," she said, "Strippers or no strippers?" They both laughed loudly and threw their heads back.

Finally, they calmed down and Mavis answered, "Only if it's Jonathon and he pops out of a cake." They laughed again at this for a good three minutes, and continued.

"Alright, no strippers," Alice chuckled, "But what kind of cake do you want?"

"Hmmm..." Mavis said, "Make it simple, maybe star-themed like my wedding, How about make it blue with some gold and silver stars?"

Alice nodded and sketched something out on a notepad she had brought. She showed it to Mavis with a smile, "Is this okay?"

Mavis nodded, "And make it chocolate." Alice nodded and scribbled chocolate on it.

"I'll bake it, I'm a pretty good baker. I'll borrow some stuff from the chefs. That way it'll be ready by tomorrow. I bet the chefs have been swamped with the massive wedding cake I designed. It will need to feed many people after all."

They headed onto the next detail: Location. "Okay," Alice said as she sipped a mug full of frothy red blood, "Where do you want to have your party?"

Mavis thought about it for a little before she said, "There's a little club here that has a bar. Maybe we could rent that for the night."

Alice nodded, "What's the name of it?"

Mavis looked and around and stood up, "I'll show you the place." So they both headed off to find the potential location for Mavis's bachelorette party. They quickly found it, a small but tidy club sitting between a clothes shop and a bathroom.

They walked inside, and looked around. There was a stage at one end with a karaoke machine and microphones. At another side of the room was an old looking bar, where a skeleton served drinks and food.

The walls were black, and so were the floors. But the dance floor lit up with color as a zombie DJ played music. Many monsters gathered there and danced.

They then proceeded to talk to the monsters working there about booking it the following night. They were able to rent the space from 8:00 to 12:00. After setting the time, Alice helped Mavis call up the bridesmaids and a few other friends to invite.

After all that was done, Alice went back up to her room to bake the cake. It was already 6:00. She had managed to borrow all the needed ingredients for it from the bakery. She hefted it all up the stairs and down the hall to her room.

She walked through the door and entered her room's kitchen. She set all the stuff on some empty counter space, and took out a big bowl for the actual mix. She decided to make it two layers, with one large one and one small one. She would mold some cake into a star and put it on the top layer, which would act as a stand.

She set to work, pouring ingredients in the bowl and using pure cocoa and sugar to flavor it chocolate. After mixing the necessary ingredients, she filled one pan for the bottom layer, and popped it into the oven. She then filled a small circular tray for the next layer, and put that in.

Last, she scraped the extra batter into a special 3D mold she had bought a long time ago that as in the shape of a 5-point star. While everything baked, Alice set a timer and wandered into the bedroom. She filled a glass with some wine, and leaned against her end table.

She sipped the wine, staring blankly at the walls. Finally, her mind forced her to think about last night. She had thought that maybe...maybe her and Dracula...She shook her head, and frowned. What good would falling in love do? She couldn't let herself think like that. She needed to stay independent...She still thought of it again.

When Dracula told her a person only ever zinged once, and that he had already zinged, she couldn't deny the pain she felt. She never knew a simple 'no' could do her heart so much harm.

She didn't want to believe it, under these circumstances, but she couldn't deny it.

She had zinged.

With Dracula.

But they wouldn't be together.

Because he loved his dead wife.

And he couldn't love again.

Then, the timer beeped, bringing her distressed thoughts to a halt. She set her glass down and walked back into the kitchen. She pulled out the trays, and waited for the cake to cool and harden. After about ten minutes, she carefully and delicately iced both layers a dark blue, like night sky. She placed the circular layer on the bottom one, and then used her artistic skills to ice on small but precise silver and golden stars. She did this for a long time, and the size of the stars varied.

Soon, the bottom layer was like a beautiful night sky, but she didn't put stars on the top layer. Very carefully, she took the star, and used icing to hold it in place on it. She iced the star golden, and stepped back to admire her work.

The cake was marvelous, and if the taste of the batter meant anything, tasted delicious. She smiled, and wiped her flour covered hands on her pants, not caring if she got them dirty.

She put the cake in a big container and slipped it into the freezer. She checked the time and saw that it was 8:00. She fell down on her bed and closed her eyes. She rubbed her eyes, then sat up again.

Suddenly, there was a light knock on her door, bringing Alice out of her trance. A familiar voice whispered, "Alice?" She stood and walked to the door. She opened it and looked at Dracula.

"Hi, Drac," she said flatly.

He looked away.

Silence.

Then, broken silence.

"I...haven't seen you today," he said.

"I was planning with Mavis."

"Oh."

More silence.

"What do you want?"

"To see you."

She stared at him in question, and simply asked, "Why?"

"Because...we're friends," he replied.

She kept staring at him, then said, "Come in."

She stood aside, and closed the door behind him as he entered her room. She remembered the wine on her end table, and asked him, "Would you like some wine?"

Dracula nodded, still watching her. She went back into the kitchen and poured some wine into a glass for him. She handed it to him, and refilled her own. They stood, sipping wine, not saying anything.

"I want to tell you something," she said suddenly, "About my past."

He blinked, and said, "Okay."

She didn't know why, but she felt compelled to tell him. She had never told anyone.

"I have a brother and a sister. When I was young, me, them, and my parents lived in a huge house in the middle of the woods. No humans ever disturbed us," she took a breath, another sip, then continued, "I shared a room with my sister, and my brother had his own room. For a while, things seemed perfect...But one night, things...changed."

She took a huge gulp of wine, fighting back tears, and pushed on, "My mother left. And never came back. My father never gave us any explanation. But he started...hunting for human blood. He started acting weird...and crazy...all the time. He just...changed. Then, not too long after, he started hitting us. He made my brother do all the work. Then, one night...when my brother turned 118, he just...left. And, soon, my sister left too. I was alone. With my dad."

Dracula had moved across the room and was now allowing Alice to lean into his shoulder, wrapping an arm comfortingly around her. She continued still, "My dad got even angrier that they had left, and he started..." Her voice broke, and silent tears slid down her face as she buried her head in his chest. She cleared her voice, and finished, "He started...r-r-raping me...Until I ran...r-ran away. I ran away when I was 116, two years away from turning 118..."

He soothed her, and placed both of their cups on the table behind them. He ran his fingers through her hair and held her. He rubbed her back and kissed her forehead. She tightly clenched his cape. "I've...always had trouble...trusting...since then. But," she looked back up at him, "With you...it's easy." She offered a tiny smile, and he warmly smiled back.

He pulled her with him into her bed, and pulled the blankets over them. She quickly fell asleep. When she did, he slipped out, and turned off all the lights. He watched her sleeping form for a few moments until he left. He felt as if a huge weight landed squarely on his shoulders, and knew, if they ended up together or not, a piece of her would always be with him. She gave him something tonight. A part of her heart...All her trust.

And he knew, no matter what, he could never break it, or he would break her.
