Not the Hippies!

~PoM and M~

"I can't believe this!" Alice complained as she hauled the new animal food for the new admissions to the zoo. "Four more animals are just four more mouths I have to go around and feed! This is ridiculous…" She grumbled as she checked her clipboard of order forms. The picture of the hippo had a red check so that food had come in, the same for the zebra drawing and the giraffe…but wait the check box next to the picture of the lion head was blank. What so they didn't have food for it?!

Come to think of it, what did that lion eat? Probably pineapples or something. Whatever. She began going around to feed the animals. Alice carelessly threw a sack of peanuts in the elephant habitat.

"Peanuts!" Burt's expression lit up as the burlap bag of goodness landed in front of him.

Alice moved on to the Chimps, tossing in their hand of bananas.

Phil signed a thank you with a grin as the bunch of bananas was tossed into Mason's arm.

Mason shook his head. "Please, as if she would utter a gesture back anyhow."

Phil shrugged.

Then it was to the gorillas so they could have their bananas. The yellow fruits were tossed in, landing on the ground.

"Aye yo Bada, we got bananas over here." Bing said.

Bada went over. "Yo you sayin we got bananas right there?"

"Yea" Bing confirmed and each of them peeled one, taking a bite.

After a moment, Bada swallowed. "Oh yeah that's definitely bananas over here."

Bing nodded as he chewed.

Next it was over to the lemurs. They were always fed unusually large amounts of fruit...

Mostly because Alice had no idea what the heck they ate either. They'd probably eat one kind of fruit or the other out of that pile. The pile was thrown in, landing on the smallest lemur, burying it alive.

"Maurice!" Julian cried to his advisor. "De royal food has been delivered to us! Now quickly! Be making your king a smoothie!"

As the ring-tailed lemur sat on his seat, Maurice sighed and got to work, saying, "As you wish."

Underneath the small hill of fruit, there was a squeaky but muffled cry. "I love you King Julien!"

"Yeah, yeah…" Julien rolled his eyes as he pulled off a piece of banana, tossing it in his mouth.

Alice traveled over to the otter habitat, dumping in the mollusks and clams.

"Yes!" She cheered from above, slipping down on her slide and diving into the water before emerging and climbing up to eat.

Marlene grab a closed shell in her paw, holding it up high. "Clams! I got clams!"

Next it was to the rhino to give him his food.

"Here you go!" Alice said without emotion as she tossed in a bale of hay. It hit the rhino in the face.

"Watch it!" Roy growled.

Alice ignored him as she walked towards the weird ostrich. That thing was always weirding her out.

Shelly stood there hopeful as the zoo keeper walked over. Oh good someone to talk to! What fun!

However, Alice just tossed the shrubbery in and walked away.

"Nice day we're having hm? You know I was just wondering about that in my head to myself but I never-" Shelly frowned as the zoo keeper just walked off. "-Oh. Hm…" the ostrich shook her head at the plant. "She's not too big on talking is she?"

Ignoring the bird, Alice moved on to give the alligator his fish to eat.

Roger rubbed his scaly paws together as a pile of fish entered his habitat. "Oh, I love it! Yes absolutely!"

Alice then wearily made her way to the poison dart frog... Oh the horror if you got touched. She climbed or more like stomped up the ladder to the top of the tank.

"Hmm." Barry licked his lips. "Time to eat!" His tongue flung out, trying to reach a bug, but he missed.

Alice slammed the tank top shut and stomped on down the ladder. She then made her way to the chameleons, tossing in their bucket of various insects.

"BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" The chameleons exclaimed.

The zookeeper finally made it over to the penguins, tossing their fish in. This job seemed so boring and repetitive.

"Look alive boys, its chow time!" Skipper said.

"Feesh!" Rico stuck his tongue out of his mouth, babbling excitedly.

"Hold your horses there!" Skipper chuckled. "We're all gonna get fish." They all grinned as they saw Alice dump their fish in.

"Yaay!" Rico cheered and dived into it.

The leader let out a chuckle. "Rico's got the right idea boys. Dig in before he eats em all!" He took a fish for himself.

While Rico gobbled all he could, Kowalski, Skipper, and Private ate their share regularly. They sighed in content. Nope there was nothing like the tang of the fresh pieces of heaven ripped out of the golden waters. Or in laymen's terms: Fish.

Ted the polar bear got his food too though as he was about to say a line, the zookeeper moved on.

Alice rolled her eyes as she moved on to the new transfers, starting with the giraffe.

Melman frowned, his eyes never leaving through the gated cage that led to the one next to his. He stared at the hippo with the utmost concern. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yes sweety." Gloria responded. "I'm all right."

"I just want to be sure because I don't think your habitat has the right requirements here." The hypochondriac giraffe went on seriously.

"Honey, I'm fine." The hippo insisted. "How are you?"

"I don't have my umbrella the people usually hold up for me!" Melman complained. "The sun just isn't good for the skin! It's a medical fact!"

"Oh, Melman," Gloria tsked and tried her best to comfort him, grabbing his hoof through the gated fence gently. "It'll be alright."

"No it won't!" The giraffe exclaimed and looked into her eyes. There was always calmness in those brown…brown eyes… Melman smiled, eyelids lowered and in love as he changed his opinions completely. "I guess you're right…"

"Yeah," Gloria sighed, looking around fondly at the surrounding zoo. "But it is great to be back…"

"I suppose." Melman mumbled. "It's just so bad that we're separated like this."

"Hey…" She squeezed his hoof tighter. "We're not separated…"

Melman blinked. "We're not?"

"No!" The hippo told him. "We're still here together."

The giraffe smiled, ears going flat against his head as he laughed. "You're right." He nodded and looked at the hippo with love. "…and you have the most amazing words…"

Gloria smiled. "Oh Melman…"

"Look." Gloria pointed. "Here comes the zookeeper. She probably has food for us.

"Well that's good. Alex should be happiest out of all of us." The giraffe said.

"Yeah. After all, he was the one so eager to get back here."

"Mmhm..." Gloria agreed and then the zookeeper came with her grumpy self.

"Welcome to your new home, although I'm not very welcome you came." Alice said in monotone as she dropped their food she'd been lugging on the ground in front of her.

Melman looked down at his food, than at Gloria. "Well, she doesn't seem that friendly."

Gloria silently agreed, watching the crabby woman. The hippo's food was dumped in as well, and Alice walked away. The hippo shrugged. "Maybe she's just having a bad day."

The Zookeeper trudged over to the zebra, where she plopped his hay down.

Marty grinned wide. It'd been forever since he had this stuff! He dug in happily with his face.

Grimacing, Alice reached the final habitat: The lion's. Well THIS should be fun… Looking back at her intake she realized there was nothing left. Where was the food for it?

They must not have had anything for it yet. Staring at the cat, she noticed that it had decided to look up at her. It looked like it was about to open its mouth but it hesitated.

She looked back at the cart, and then at the lion once again. There was nothing for it, so why linger?

Alice shrugged. "Whatever." Then walked away.

In his caged habitat, Alex's stomach growled noisily and the careless zoo keeper had no idea of the chain of events she'd set off at that moment that would all come from a hungry lion.
