Kinda a short chapter… Sorry for any mistakes… Enjoy…
OoOoOo
1943- November
"…Emission signature is unusual. Alpha beta ray neutral. But, I doubt Rogers picked up on that." Kat heard her friend mutter.
"Be nice." She reprimanded. She may have been annoyed with Steve at the moment, but that was no excuse for Howard to be a jerk.
"Always am Kitty Kat, you know that." This made Kat roll her eyes and mumbled something under her breath that the mustached man couldn't make out.
The pair had ended up working in the lab throughout the night. Kat didn't even bother to go back to her room and change out of her pretty green dress, but no one could really notice it underneath her white lab coat. Unless of course you really looked.
"This seems harmless enough." Howard continued saying to the man who was taking notes, as he controlled an arm-like machine to observe a bright blue particle from behind a glass. "I don't see what all the fuss is abo-"
BOOM!
The glass window shattered, making Howard fly back a few feet and caused Kat to yelp and take cover behind her work table. When it was over she looked up to see her flasks and test tubes shattered, colorful liquids dripping off the table, and poor Howard groaning on his back.
"Howard!" Kat yelled as she ran over to him.
"Write that down." Howard said, as she help him pick up his upper body.
"Howard, are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Pat."
That made Kats eyebrows scrunch together in confusion, he must have hit his head pretty hard.
"Uh - Howard, how many fingers am I holding up?" She asked holding up two fingers in front of him. He tried to focus in on them before replying, "Eleventy-three."
Uh-oh...
"Okay, Howard c'mon, upsy-daisy now." Kat said, as the man taking notes came to help her get Howard to his feet. "Let's get you to Dr. Anderson, before you see Cap, okay?"
"Whatever you say, Pretty Pat..."
OoOoOo
"Excuse me. I'm looking for Mr. Stark." Steve asked the secretary, as he got closer to her desk.
"He's busy." She told him from behind her newspaper in a bored tone. Until she looked up at the man who was interrupting her. "Of course, you're welcome to wait." Unbeknownst to him the blonde women looked him over as he leaned against a cabinet to wait. "I read about what you did." she quickly added sweetly, showing him the article she was just reading.
"Oh the- yeah." he replied modestly, "Well that- you know just doing what needed to be done."
"Sounded like more than that. You saved nearly four hundred men."
"Really it's not a big deal." He told her.
"Tell that to their wives." The stunning women said rising from her seat.
"I don't think all of them were married-" he told her after a slight pause from recalling the events.
"You're a hero." she said cutting him off.
"Well that depends on the definition really-"
"The women of America, owe you their thanks and seeing as they're not here..."
OoOoOo
"Howard, are you ready to see Steve?" Kat asked the mechanical engineer.
"Yep, I think we're good to go" he replied putting the bag of ice down from his head.
"Alright, I'll go get him then."
She walked out of the lab and to her surprise, no Steve. According to the big clock on the opposite wall it was just a few minutes after the time they agreed on. But then again, Steve had been having a bit of a late streak.
He had to be around here somewhere, Kat thought as she continued to walk and weave through the busy people working.
She rounded the corner, hoping that one of the secretary's would know if they had seen him pass by. But she never really got the chance to ask, as a matter of fact she really wished that she hadn't of turned that corner because what she saw made her stop dead in her tracks.
The two lip locked blondes continued to kiss in front of her, having no idea anyone was watching them. The secretary was just about the put her arms around him.
Oh, good God, she couldn't take much more of this.
"Rogers." Kat tried to say as calmly as possible, then watched the kissing couple break apart quickly. "We're ready for you. Unless you would rather take care of this first." And with that she turned away to go back into the lab.
"Kat wait!" Steve said, as he tried to catch up to her, "That wasn't what it looked like."
Kat let out a humorless laugh. "I think that it was exactly what it looked like. Not that I care. But it must be fun, you know? To be able to jump from girl to girl now that the serum, that I helped make, made you all tall and strong, huh. What happen to the guy I used to know? I mean what was all that crap you and your precious Peggy were talking about last night about the 'right partner'."
She felt horrible bringing her friend into this but, the conversation that he and Peggy had last night made her sick to her stomach. It just came out like… like word vomit.
"'Precious Peggy?' What are you talking about?"
"I think you know precisely what I'm talking about." Kat gritted out, stopping her strides to face him.
"Well I don't!" he exclaimed, making a few people who were busily working stop and turn their way.
"You know what, just forget I said anything. I didn't mean to get involved into your new girlfriends business." she said dismissively, when she noticed that there were people around and continued to walk away from him.
"Well what about you and Stark?" Steve asked, not wanting there heated conversation to end just yet.
He didn't understand why she was being like this, he wasn't the one who started the kiss. So how was this any of his fault?
"What about Stark?"
"Look at yourself Kat. You're still wearing the same dress from last night, and you and him just couldn't get out of the bar together fast enough." He said harshly, "It's pretty obvious that you two have been- been… fondue-ing!"
That made her stop walking and turn around to face him once more. And when Steve saw the flash of hurt in her beautiful crystal blue eyes it felt as though someone had just punched him in the gut. But, he was only able to see her eyes for a few seconds because she soon turned back around and continued making her way into the lab.
"You're such an ass." he heard her mutter.
And yet again the feeling of being punched in the gut commenced.
OoOoOo
"Are you alright?" Peggy asked, when she made it to her friends work station.
"Of course I'm alright." Grunted Kat, as she continued to grind some substance unknown to Peggy in the mortar. "Why would you think-grrrr- I'm not alright?"
"Because you've practically grounded whatever that is into dust." The agent told her crossing her arms. "So Spill."
Kat stopped what she was doing and took a deep breath. "Captain Rogers and I had a bit of a disagreement."
"A disagreement?" Peggy repeated confused.
"I caught him and Private Blonde Bimbo kissing by her desk." Kat replied, as she poured the substance into a flask that already had a bright blue liquid in it, making it bubble and fizz.
"You're joking." Said Peggy disbelief, "that doesn't seem like something he'd do."
"Well, he did! And he had the nerve to bring Howard into it all!"
"What did he say?"
"He pretty much insinuated that he thought Howard and I are- are... fondue-ing!"
"Fondue-ing?" the agent asked confused.
"You know...sneaking around. Being promiscuous."
"What! Now why on earth would he bring that up?"
Kat sighed. "Because I may have brought you up too. I didn't mean to though."
"What?"
"Last night at the bar when you two were talking about the right partner and- oh never mind it's silly."
"No, go on." Peggy urged gently.
"Are you and Steve an item?" Kat asked her carefully
"What?" Peggy cried out amused. "No!"
"So, then you didn't go to the pub last night to see him?"
"No I didn't." Peggy told her truthfully.
"Oh." Kat said satisfied with her friends answer, until a thought came across her mind. "Wait, so then why were you there all dressed up?"
Kat then saw something that she thought she would never see in her lifetime. Agent Peggy Carter blushing!
Peggy looked down to the floor and mumbled something that Kat didn't understand.
"Huh?"
Peggy then mumbled a bit louder but not loud enough to be coherent.
"What?"
"I was on a date!" Peggy said finally in defeat.
"No!" Kat cried out with a surprised gasp.
"Well, it was just dinner. I didn't want to tell you unless I thought it was going to somewhere. Which it isn't." Peggy told her friend. "Oh, he was such a pig. What was I thinking?"
"I'm sorry, Peg." Kat voiced softly. "Give me his name, I'll kill him."
"Ugh, it's too embarrassing to say."
"So here right it down." Kat told her handing her a notebook and pen.
"There." Peggy said after writing down the name and once seeing it Kat couldn't help but laugh.
"Really?" The scientist chuckled.
"Shut up."
"Aw, don't worry honey." Said Kat, "I'll be sure to cook up some type of revenge for the creep."
"That my dear Katherine, is why you're my best friend." Peggy said happily pinching Kats cheek.
"And since I'm getting some payback on your rat, how would you like to help with my problem..."
OoOoOo
"What's wrong with Kitty?" Howard asked Steve when he came through the outer lab entrance. "She practically ran over me on her way in here?"
"I may have said something." Steve mumbled out.
"Oh no, what did you say?"
"I said that you two fondue."
"Yeah, but I mean, we've only had fondue together twice." Howard spoke truthfully. "Why would she be mad at you for saying that?"
"Maybe she's just upset that I found out that you're seeing each other, before you two could tell anyone else."
"Seeing each other?" Howard asked confused.
"Yeah, you know... fondue" Steve shrugged making the genius' eyes then widened in realization.
"No, no, no! It's food!" Howard said quickly and very defensively. "Jeez… try to be more careful about what you say around here. Every one of these dolts is a blabber mouth and last thing I need is for Kitty's brother to come down here and give me a black eye."
There were only a few things that really scared Howard Stark to the core, and overprotective brothers were one of them. Along with angry husbands… now those were the worst.
"So- it's just food?" Steve trying to clarify.
"It's just cheese and bread, my friend."
"Really? I didn't think-"
"Nor should you, pal." Howard told him. "The moment you think you know what's going on in a women's head is the moment your goose well and truly cooked. Which is why, as of now my job is to make sure you and your men don't get killed."
Stark then led the Captain to a table filled with various material and weapons. "This is carbon polymer, it can stop a German bayonet. But hydras not going to attack you with a pocket knife."
"I hear you're kind of attached." Howard continued on, patting the colorfully banged up shield with his hand.
"It's handier then you might think."
"I took the liberty of coming up with some options." Stark informed him, pointing to the different versions of silver shields. "This one's fun. She's being fitted with electrical relays that allow you to…"
Steve scanned the inventions not seeing really warming up to any of them until…
"What about this one?" He asked, picking up a simple but very sleek shield that was peeking out under the table.
"No, no, that's just a prototype."
"What's it made out of?"
"Vibranium. It's stronger than steel and only third the weight. It's completely vibration absorbent."
"How come it's not standard issue?"
"That's the rarest metal on earth." Howard explained. "What you're holding there, that's all we got."
"You quite finished Mr. Stark?" A British voice called out, as she made her way towards them. "I heard the Captain has some unfinished business."
But Steve was too enthralled by new shield he held in his hands to hear what the agent had said, "What do you think?" he asked her.
Peggy simply picked up a small hand gun of the table and fire three rounds at the shield. Making both men cower from her.
"Yes, I think it works." Peggy replied and as she brushed past him she said, "That was for Kat."
"I have some ideas about the uniform." Steve told the shaken man once Peggy was out of earshot, giving him a piece of paper filled with notes.
"Whatever you want pal..."
