It was early morning. The sky hardly started to catch the blue. Maggie was asleep while Glenn stay awake keeping watch. He had let her sleep more than what was planned. His attention was brought to the rising body that they had shot yesterday. Now fully he turned, he put his crosshairs on the head and realized, before pulling the trigger, that this one looked a bit weird. He wasn't sure what was different, he saw it's lips moving but nevertheless he squeezed the trigger. He dropped the walker and put the rifle back down. "Did he turn?" Maggie asked half asleep. Glenn gave a confirming grunt. She went back to sleep. A few minutes later, it got back up, even faster now.
Meanwhile, the Doctor lie in his cell thinking of ways to get to the nearest library. Wherever that was. He wasn't sure what was in this said library only that the TARDIS felt a force of some kind coming from it. It wasn't a book for he had every book in existence in his library. He just knew he had to get there.
It was early morning and Carl came to unlock the Doctor's doors. The Doctor greeted Carl and Carl gave him a grunt in return. He met up with Amy and Rory in the social part of the prison. "Sleep well, you two song birds?" the Doctor asked the couple.
"We made it work," Amy replied with a cute little smile towards Rory. He blushed.
The Doctor put on his disgust face. "I may have two hearts but neither bleeds for either of you."
"Good morning," Beth came by with cups and gave them each a mug of coffee. "Michonne came back with coffee beans yesterday. You haven't met her yet. Oh hey, there she is now. Hey Michonne, thanks for the coffee. This is a nice way to greet the new people. This is Amy, Rory, and…"
"John Smith. But you can call me the Doctor. Nice to meet you Michonne. I don't remember the last time I had coffee...or tea and crumpets for that matter." The Doctor introduced himself, shook hands, and drank his coffee. Amy and Rory shook hands.
"British? You're far away from home, aren't you? What brought you here?" Michonne inquired.
"Family," the Doctor said. "Before this we were trying to reach Seattle for family but once this started to happen, our connecting flight in Atlanta started getting delayed and delayed and delayed." The Doctor almost put on a smile but remembered he had to be serious and sad that he couldn't reach his family before they died, and then, he did get sad.
"I'm sorry to hear that," Michonne said with a sadness in her voice. "So you're all family?"
"Well me and Amy are lovers," Rory stated. "Star crossed," Amy added. They all smiled, and the Doctor gave a fake smile.
Beth went to get them bread and they chatted, continuing to socialize with the group, having to build lies. It was easy to lie. It was like creating a new bio, a new life. They told stories of what life was like in London and overall entertained the group. Soon everyone started getting in on the conversation and everyone started to really respect this new group. Even Rick who was still unsure about them, but at the very least felt safe that they wouldn't try anything to harm the group.
Everyone started to leave and get ready for the day. The Doctor went over to Herschel with a piece of chocolate that he had grabbed before he left the TARDIS the night before. "Where did you get this?" Herschel asked with joy in his voice. "I've had it with me for a long time, but trust me it's okay."
"Oh I don't care if you've dropped it, stepped on it, or if a walker spat it out, chocolate is the best commodity there is to man. Thank you, Doctor," he paused, "but don't think this means I'm taking my eye off of you." He said, although less serious than last time.
"Herschel, where is the nearest library?" the Doctor asked.
"Why?"
"I need to…" the Doctor stopped, he realized he was at a roadblock. He himself wasn't sure why he needed to go there, heck he probably shouldn't go there.
More slowly eating his treat, Herschel asked "need to what?"
"Books. I need to get books. I haven't read a good one in a while and learning should never stop for the younger ones." The Doctor feeling a bit relieved now that he has somewhat of a basis to lie. Although, he started to think about it and he does think these kids still need to read.
"We have a library here."
"Ah yes, but they don't have every book. We need Hemingway, Fitzgerald, you know, the classics! Not Froggy and the Lillipad." Having met and written a book with both of those writers, the Doctor started to get passionate about this lie.
"Fine, but you'll have to go on your own or with your friends. We're not going to risk any lives just for three-hundred pieces of kindling." Herschel got up, "I'll be right back," he would be and this time, with a map. The Doctor smiled and Herschel sat back down. "We're here," Herschel said.
"Oh it even says prison!" the Doctor gleefully interrupted.
"The library is over here, that's roughly eleven or twelve miles. There and back is about a day, and that's including the dangers you'll face."
"Okay, thank you so much Herschel. I'll go tomorrow with Amy and Rory."
"Do you have a gun?" Herschel asked in a very serious tone.
"I don't believe in guns," the Doctor stated.
"How in the world have you made it this far? I don't care, you'll take this gun or you'll never come back." He reached behind him and gave him a small pistol. "Safety," he clicked the saftey on and off. "Remember, when you click it on and off, red is dead. Now say it."
"I don't need-"
"Say it, dammit!"
Feeling defeated and having to remember he's in the apocolypse now, the Doctor said "red is dead."
He finished showing him how everything worked and put the weapon in his hands. A surge of some kind went through the Doctor's hands. "I don't like using it either. But they're already gone. I don't think they're fully dead, so we're going to finish the job for them. Give them final rest." The Doctor looked at him, musing. For now, he wrapped his hands around the gun and shakingly put it in his coat pocket. "Okay," he said to Herschel.
"What the hell is going on?!" An angry voice echoed throughout the prison, scaring everyone. Judith started crying and Beth tried to calm her down.
"Rick!" Maggie yelled. "Rick get in here!" Rick hurried, hand instinctively on his gun. The Doctor, too, ran. Maggie and Glenn threw the intruder in the closest cell and slammed the door. When Rick got there, the man's face and body was covered in blood with two holes in his forehead and chest. His eyes were yellow, like the walkers and his skin pale like them too. The man was shouting demanding many things.
"Shut up, SHUT UP!" Rick bellowed as his gun ferociously shook. "What are you doing here?!"
"I am looking for someone. I'm looking for the Doctor." Rick gave a puzzled look.
"Who are you and how do you know the Doctor?"
"I'm-"
"Captain Jack Harkness," cut in the Doctor with a stressed look on his face. "And he's the one who gave me this bloody screwdriver."
