As soon as Sasuke pulled into the parking lot, Sakura took that opportunity to sprint out of the car, shouting a quick "thank you!" as she made it to her front door in record time…Not noticing the way Sasuke sighed to himself, running a hand through his hair and closing his eyes as if pondering something very important.
After taking a few breaths to calm herself, she managed to sloppily pull her keys out of her purse, fumbling with them a bit before successfully unlocking her door. Stepping inside, she closed the door hurriedly, congratulating herself on her quick escape.
It wasn't exactly that she wanted to get away from Sasuke, but she knew that if she dragged out her "goodbye," she'd say or do something stupid. (Like blush profusely while thinking of how much she'd like to kiss those lips again) He seemed like the type of guy that had girls tripping over themselves to get with him, and the last thing she wanted to be was just another flustered fangirl.
For some reason, she could imagine that if she had met him in middle school, she definitely would've been one of those fangirls.
Not many people knew that although Sakura had come a long way, she still was almost as insecure as she was when she was younger. She hadn't grown into her forehead until recently, and back then she was extremely thin and pale. A lot of girls at school bullied her often, and it got so bad that she had to convince her parents to let her transfer to a nice private school a few miles away. There she met Ino, who after meeting her, declared instantly that the two would become best friends, and that the first thing in order was a makeover.
And though it may superficial, once Sakura began to ditch the baggy clothes and pull back her bangs with Ino's lucky red ribbon, she became one of the popular girls alongside Ino, and true to the friendly blonde's prediction, they soon became the best of friends.
But for now, she focused on the task at hand: get ready so that she looked presentable for her meeting with Kiba.
It wasn't like she was going to try to look perfect; he was one of her best guy friends, so she didn't need to try anything special. She would do the same even for Naruto. If she showed up looking like a mess, it would look like she didn't care about them enough to look decent.
So she hopped in the shower, tying up her hair into a sloppy bun so that it didn't get wet. The water felt warm and soothing, and she couldn't help but wish she could stay there for the rest of the day. It only took a few minutes for her to wash off and pat herself dry with one of her fluffy towels, walking out of the bathroom and into the bedroom to try to find some acceptable outfit.
Well I don't want to look like I tried too hard, but Kiba's still an attractive male, so I don't want to look gross.
Eventually she slid on a pair of dark-wash skinny jeans, layering a burgundy tank top with a light green cardigan and zipping on her favorite black boots. Good enough, I guess.
Since she still had a little time left, she strolled into the kitchen, taking out a few bottles of vitamins and downing them with a glass of water. Feeling a headache coming on, she avoided the temptation of painkillers and instead massaged her temples while closing her eyes and deep breathing.
Sasuke is definitely not good for my stress levels….
Hearing her doorbell ring, she quickly cleaned up after herself, walking over to the door and opening it with a smile after grabbing her purse. Kiba brightened up the second he saw her, and she could help but notice that he was slightly dressed up as well.
"Hey," Kiba said, looking her over briefly.
"Hey yourself," Sakura responded.
"Ready to go?"
"Of course!" she replied, closing the door as they left for his car.
There was a semi-awkward silence as he adjusted the sleeves of his shirt.
"So….how was your day today?" she asked,
"Not too exciting," he replied. "I worked for a bit this morning, and then I have another shift in a few hours."
Sakura was familiar with Kiba's job, since he had been working since he turned 16. His parents owned a pretty successful pet store in downtown Konoha, and he didn't even need a college degree to eventually become the next owner. He also constantly asked his friends if they were interested in adopting any sort of pet he had rescued, since he also took pride in being somewhat of an animal shelter.
He made sure to open the car door for her, and even though she took pride in being an independent woman who didn't require chivalry, she appreciated that he took the effort. After all, it wasn't often that Kiba showed his nice side. His normal personality was very colorful, regularly engaging in verbal flights with his male friends and quipping the occasional perverted joke. It was very entertaining for Sakura since he had an air of confidence that she secretly envied.
When they got to the restaurant, he had finally seemed to calm down. She could totally understand being anxious. He had pretty much been that way since high school.
Inside, the hostess gave them a polite smile. "Table for two?"
Kiba nodded, and they were led to a booth right next to a window. You could see the people on the sidewalk hurriedly walking by, and it reminded Sakura of how stressful her days usually were. Recently she had not been making as much time for her friends, especially since she was often called in for late shifts at the hospital and sent to medical conferences at random places in the country.
"How've you been recently?" she asked Kiba, meeting his eyes briefly before looking at the menu. A burger sounded really nice at the moment, and since she was mainly used to hanging out with Naruto and Shikamaru, she didn't even think twice about eating sloppily in front of Kiba, unlike some girls.
I wonder what I would order if I came here with Sasuke…she couldn't help but wonder, but she tried to brush away the thought. After all, she was here to reconnect with a friend, not worry more about that cocky…silent….handsome….
That's it. No more Sasuke thoughts for the rest of the meal.
"I've been working a lot," Kiba admitted. "Sometimes it gets frustrating because we're competing with companies outside of Konoha that only sell animals that are from puppy mills and the like."
Sakura nodded. "It's a really good cause that you work for. I'm really happy that your family's business has been so successful."
The waitress came over surprisingly fast, bringing waters and an over-eager smile.
"What would you two like?" she chirped even though Sakura couldn't help but notice the dark circles under her eyes. Definitely going to give her a large tip. It reminded her of when she worked as a waitress through high school and college, trying to pull together money for tuition since she didn't want to put a strain on her family's income.
"A burger and fries, please," they both said at the same time, before laughing heartily at their similar tastes. The waitress left, and Kiba shot Sakura a cheesy grin.
"Glad to see you haven't changed since college. Most girls only order salads at places like this."
"So you're saying that I should be ordering a salad," she replied with mock-seriousness, raising an eyebrow.
"N-no! Of course not!" he stammered out, not wanting to be on the receiving end of Sakura's anger (which was usually only directed at Naruto and Sai).
She giggled. "I'm kidding. You don't have to apologize."
He took a few gulps of water before saying anything else.
"So how did you meet that Sasuke guy?"
Sakura froze. Shit. Just when I told myself I wasn't going to think of him.
"Uh…we actually did meet each other on a plane back from Suna," she admitted, deliberately leaving out the PG-13 part of that flight. Why does that keep coming back to bite me in the ass?
"Where is he from?" he pressed on.
She shrugged. "He's somehow related to the Uchiha Corporation, but I don't know what he did before coming here."
Kiba slightly grimaced. "I'm guessing he was one of those trust-fund kids."
"Probably," Sakura sighed.
"Well don't go replacing us with rich millionaires," he laughed, even though it sounded forced.
"I obviously don't pick friends based on income," she smiled. "I just like being around people with ambition."
"Just like yourself?" he said, sounding more like stating a fact rather than asking a question.
Before she could answer, their food was placed in front of them, and they happily dug into it. It was always amusing to watch Kiba eat because it was almost comical how seriously he took it. Almost exactly like Naruto and his ramen.
The rest of the time they spent reminiscing on their high school and college days without another word about Sasuke, to Sakura's excitement.
When it came time to pay, Kiba (of course) refused to let her pay, though she sneakily put down some extra money for a tip on their table when he wasn't looking.
After he drove her home, he walked her to her door because "mom would kill me if I left a friend to walk alone to their home," and left with a smile on his face.
I'm lucky to have such nice friends. Sakura thought to herself. And without checking her phone, she took a very long nap, not seeing the text messages on her phone before it ran out of battery during her slumber.
She wouldn't see a text from a certain someone for a long while.
HAPPY SUMMER TO ALL OF YOU GUYS
