The next morning Caroline woke slowly, firstly aware of the soft sunlight filtering in through the window, then the body that enveloped hers. She hummed happily and snuggled deeper into his embrace, trying to ignore the slight throbbing in her temple from the four vodka-cokes she had consumed out of nerves last night.

"There's an advil and some water on the nightstand." Was grunted into her neck and she smiled at his grogginess. It was rare for Klaus, he always seemed to be immediately awake as soon as his eyes opened.

"Excellent!" She wriggled away from him a little to reach the glass of water on the nightstand, hearing him huff, she rolled her eyes, reaching for the pill and gulping it back. Placing the glass back on the nightstand she rolled over, Klaus' arms pulling her into his chest, "Thank you, honey." She murmured, and Klaus kissed the crown of her head in response, "What time is it?"

"A little after seven."

"Too early. Wake me up at nine."

Klaus laughed, "Yes ma'am."

It felt like her eyes had been closed for just a second before Klaus was stroking her hair, calling her back to consciousness, "No." She grumbled, grabbing the covers tight around her, petulant as she felt Klaus wasn't in bed with her.

"How do you always sneak out of bed? I move an inch and you're immediately there like a heat seeking missile." She huffed, refusing to open her eyes, but feeling that he was stood by the bed in front of her..

"It's those pesky supernatural skills, love."

"We'll see how good those supernatural skills are when I hex the bed for the next time you get out of it." She griped.

"You were the one sneaking out of bed the first time we were together."

"Shhhhhh." She whispered snuggling into the sheets more.

"I'd be perfectly happy to let you sleep, but you asked me to wake you up. I don't know what your plans are today, but my sister and the others are coming round later, so unless you'd like to be lunch, I'd suggest disappearing before then."

She scoffed, opening her eyes and glaring at a perfectly kempt, fully clothed Klaus, "As if a bunch of vampires could make me their lunch. I'd have their asses barbequed in a second."

"Another reason why I don't want you meeting my sister from my bed."

"Ugh, fuck. I have to help Grams out at the apothecary today. Inventory."

Klaus leant over and pressed a kiss to her lips, "Better get up then. You get ready, I'll make you some breakfast."

"You're the best." She said as she stretched with a groan, Klaus smirking as he left the room. She definitely felt their activities from last night. She was a little sore and her muscles ached, but in a good way. The headache from earlier had disappeared, and she knew the perfect potion to whip up for her other ailments.

Twenty minutes later she appeared in the kitchen carrying her heels and purse, where she found Klaus sat casually at the kitchen island, reading a newspaper, a plate and a steaming cup of coffee waiting in front of the seat next to him. She walked over to the seat, dropped her heels and purse, and Klaus looked up at her, and she couldn't help but place a kiss on his lips. Sitting down next to him, she reached for the coffee taking a grateful sip. Looking down, she found he had made her toast with a decent layer of her favourite jam, and a small bowl of fresh fruit. She hummed in appreciation, "You're amazing, thank you." She said as she immediately shoved a bite of toast into her mouth, "Best boyfriend ever."

Caroline froze in her chewing, realising what she had just said, and Klaus stopped in his perusing of his paper to look at her with a quirked brow, "Boyfriend, eh?"

Her cheeks flooded with colour as she clumsily chewed, swallowing thickly, "Well, uh, yeah, I mean- we kind of talked about it- you know, I just- I can take it back." She stuttered.

Klaus laughed at her flustered state, "I don't think I've ever seen my little witch so flustered," He teased, eyes crinkling good naturedly,

Caroline punched his arm, Klaus not even moving in his seat as she did, his smile growing, "Come on, don't leave me hanging here, you jerk!"

"I'm not sure I'd like a girlfriend who calls me a jerk, sweetheart, my love, God, those are all acceptable," Caroline's jaw dropped at his words, "Although I distinctly remember you using that last one a lot last night." He smirked, wiggling his eyebrows.

Caroline punched his shoulder again, "See now you're just proving you're a jerk." She sniffed as she continued eating her toast, sure that he could hear her heart thundering.

Klaus laughed again, putting his paper down and standing to wind his arms loosely around her waist, pressing a kiss to her cheek as she continued to ignore him, "I'd love to be your boyfriend." He said sincerely, pressing another kiss to her cheek, making Caroline perk up.

"Really?" She asked, looking up at him with vulnerable eyes,

"Yes." He said pressing a kiss to her smiling lips this time.

"Although I'm not sure a thousand year old hybrid can be a 'boyfriend'. I'm hardly a boy." He pondered, making her roll her eyes.

"Deal with it, boyfriend." She said, turning her attention back to her breakfast, Klaus slumping back into his seat,

"Partner?"

"Boyfriend." She mumbled resolutely around a mouthful of toast,

"Lover?"

Caroline's nose wrinkled, "Eww. Boyfriend."

"Courter?"

"Old man."

After a quick shower and change at home, Caroline headed to the French Quarter. Upon arriving at her family owned apothecary, she found the shop shut. It wasn't unusual, as it was only 10 o'clock, And someone from the family didn't normally make it there until that time or a little later, making up for the fact the shop stayed open late into the evening. She unlocked the door, flipping on the lights, the strong scent of herbs hitting her. She smiled, the apothecary was her favourite of the family businesses to help run. As a result, she was nearly always assigned the apothecary. Potions, poultices and tonics were her thing. Hand her nearly any herb or flower and she could identify it.

Putting her things away, she grabbed jars of dried yarrow, plantain leaf, and red clover, ingredients she knew off by heart to make a tea to help with her Klaus induced aches and pains. Once the steaming cup was brewing, she got an inventory form, setting to her work for the day.

She was a couple of hours into her shift when her grandmother entered the shop, "Bonjour, ma cherie." She trilled, a bright smile on her face, hands full of take out cups and paper bags,

"Ooh, you brought coffee, gimme." Caroline said eagerly, holding her hands out for the beverage.

"So lovely to see you Grams, how are you today Grams? Well, thank you Caroline, I feel wonderful today!" Lillian said drily, as she approached the counter where her granddaughter stood.

Caroline smiled and took the proffered coffee, kissing her grandmother on the cheek, "You know I love you." Suddenly, Caroline had a flash of a memory from the night before.

"Caroline, cher, I brought you a beignet." Lillian called, jolting Caroline out of her daydream as she shook a paper bag in front of her granddaughters face.

She cleared her throat, forcing a smile as her heart raced, "Thank you." She had told Klaus she loved him. Then promptly fell asleep without realising what she'd said. And he hadn't said anything this morning.

The bell above the door of the apothecary tinkled, her grandmother had moved to the back room, so it was up to her to deal with the customer, "Hi there, what can I do for you?" She said to the frazzled looking woman,

"My daughter has some kind of sickness bug, I was hoping for something that would help her keep something down?"

"I have just the thing!"

...

"So, What's been going on with these outlaw wolves? Everything went quiet, and then they started invading in our territory." Klaus sighed, rubbing his temple. Fletcher, Clemence and his sister had come to his house for their meeting, and Klaus was already tired of the politics.

"We upped the hybrid patrols, and the werewolf ones, warding off the outlaw and omega wolves." Clemence his hybrid lieutenant informed him.

"It worked at first, it went quiet for a few weeks," Fletcher continued, the gruff giant of a man looked tired, "The hybrids and my wolves worked in teams to chase off any outsiders. The packs outside the quarter have been doing the same, as well."

"And why hasn't this been working?" Rebekah asked boredly,

"A small group of wolves distracts the patrolling packs and then a bigger group slips past our forces." Clemence said.

Klaus swore under his breath, "Fletch, do you still think they're gearing up for a war?" The head of the werewolves nodded, "Bekah, get the vampires involved. They can join the groups. Where are the public executions I asked for?"

Clemence and Fletcher shifted nervously, "They don't have the guts to turn on their own kind." Rebekah said, eyeing the two,

"When I give an order I expect to see results." Klaus said calmly,

Fletcher took a deep breath, "The wolves that we managed to actually catch, they..."

"They're all inbred and related." Rebekah said dismissively, with a wave of her hand, the two in question sent her glares.

Templing his hands, Klaus nodded, "Then the vampires can act as a kind of enforcement. You had better warn all these family relations." Clemence and Fletcher nodded solemnly, "And I'm going to call Elijah in." Klaus sighed.

Rebekah perked up, "Really?"

"Yes. And he can stay with you."

Rebekah's face fell at his words, "Fuck." Making a smile twitch on Klaus' lips.

"Go. Start rounding up the troops." Klaus informed them, Clemence and Fletcher immediately fleeing, but Rebekah remained.

As soon as the door slammed shut Rebekah's eyes met his, "What the hell did you say to Marcel?"

Klaus' heart plummeted, his mind immediately going to protecting Caroline, "I'm sure I have no idea what you mean."

"I mean him leaving the other day after we had a fight, and him coming back an hour later, acting as though I was about to die."

"I have no idea why this includes me." He said, avoiding her gaze and feigning boredom.

"I know he came to see you."

Klaus sighed, "Look, I have more important things to worry about right now than if I hurt Marcel's feelings."

Rebekah huffed and stood, "I'm going to find out what happened, Niklaus. You know I will." She said before turning to storm out of the house. Klaus could feel the sensation of his actions coming round to bite him in the ass.

Later that night Caroline let herself into Klaus' house, dropping her keys onto the table by the door, feeling dead on her feet. The living room and hall were dark, but she could hear classical music coming from upstairs. She followed the sound up the stairs and down the hall, in the opposite direction of his bedroom. Caroline was intrigued, she rarely strayed from his bedroom and living areas, not having seen any other rooms in the house.

She pushed the door open and found Klaus hunched over a desk, the room obviously being a home office, his head cradled in his hands, "You know for such an evil bastard, keeping control is fucking difficult."

Caroline cocked her head, walking into the room, "Evil bastard," She repeated walking round the side of his desk, where a map of the French Quarter was laid out, "Something I might have said a few months ago," Klaus turned to face her in his chair, and she walked forward dropping her purse to straddle him on his chair, arms draping over his shoulders as she settled herself, "Not something I would say now."

He grinned wryly as he tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, "My evil plan is working then." He said, leaning up to press a kiss to her lips, "How was your day?" He asked, placing his hands comfortably on her hips.

Caroline sighed, fingers playing with the short curls at the nape of his neck, "I love my Grams, but she's a slave driver. Once she got to the shop I got to sit down for an entire half an hour. Out of eight."

Klaus laughed, "Poor little love." He teased.

"Hey! My feet are throbbing! I'm pretty sure that's illegal."

"I'd talk to her about it, but I feel that would do more harm than good." Klaus said sarcastically finding amusement in the widening of her eyes and horror on her face,

"Don't even joke about that!" She cried, slapping his shoulder, making him roll his eyes,

"I've handled your grandmother before, I can do it again if I have to."

Caroline sighed, turning to look at his desk, "What are you doing anyway? Plotting your evil master plan?"

"You jest but, yes. Kind of."

"Is this about the wolves?" Caroline asked with a tilt of her head, drawing a surprised look from Klaus,

"What do you know about that?"

"Only the whispers that are going around the French Quarter. The coven are having a meeting about it next week." She said, carefully gauging his reaction.

He tilted his head back to rest on his chair in exasperation, "If the witches know, this is already getting out of control."

"The witches know everything, we have powers, you know?" She looked at him as if he were stupid, "And we breed like rabbits, so there's a lot of ears around."

Klaus laughed, "With your lot and the wolves, I don't know how we haven't been overrun already."

Caroline shrugged, "Maybe we like letting you think you're in control."

"Sounds about right."

"I remember what I said last night." She mumbled, avoiding his eyes,

"Hmm?" He asked, looking up at her with a smile on his face,

"You know, the L word..."

Klaus' eyebrows raised, "The L word? Are you 14?" He asked his smile widening,

"Look, just forget it." Caroline mumbled, going to climb off his lap, stopping as his hands forced her to halt.

"I love you too." Klaus blurted, Caroline's eyes meeting his,

"Really?" She breathed. Klaus almost looked surprised in himself,

"I haven't said that in over eight hundred years. I'm pretty sure."

Caroline looked delighted, but then she became uneasy, "Is this just because of the mate thing?"

Klaus' smile drooped a little, "Yes, but from what I understand, the mate bond has developed because... Well, I'm told we're fated to be together. And from that, of course, well, feelings form."

Caroline looked more perturbed than comforted by his words, "This is so complicated. The bond, fate? How can this be fated when we've got so much standing between us?"

"Fate is never easy, my love."

Caroline smiled, almost shyly, gently grasping his face in both hands and melding their lips together. "I love you." She said with a grin, "I know that much."

"I will never let anything take you away from me. Not even The Sisters of Brigid."

She sighed, "Take me to bed, Nik."
