A/N:
Hi :)
It's really been a long time. I'm sorry because it took more than one month for me to update. Many things happened, but the worst thing was I lost this chapter when it almost finished (In the middle of February), and it still make me upset every time I remembered it. I knew it stupid, but I'm deeply, deeply sorry for the delay *bow*
Well, without further delay, here's the new chapter, Chapter 8: His Family. The Rules. Her Question
There is no beta for this chapter, so please forgive my grammar or spelling mistakes, I'm not the best, but I'll do my best :)
And it's just a friendly reminder xD
It's an AU story, so the characters will feel OOC in some scenes, especially in this chapter which contain so much drama, but I'm trying to make it IC as best as I can. However, I hope you don't mind with all the OOCness in this story and still enjoy this chapter :)
Disclaimer: Bleach belongs to Tite Kubo. Thank you so much for the most beautiful ByaRuki's moments in the last three chapters, sensei :)
-Happy Reading-
Chapter 8: His Family. The Rules. Her Question
So… this is the place where he grew up. Rukia thought while examining the room.
The living room was large, even too large with less of furniture. Merely, it did not make this room as plain as it looks. Just like the entire manor, the traditional Japanese elements dominated this one. Tatami mats covered the floor, and there was a calligraphic scroll pinned on the wall. A low table set in the center of the room with six zabuton arranged around it. It was simple, but very elegant and really reflected their high status.
Kuchiki family…
Rukia kept her gaze on the calligraphy scroll for a moment, whilst her mind rolled back the first meeting with Kuchiki Ginrei. At that time, she admitted she knew nothing about him and his family, except he was her Jiisan's best friend.
Seriously! You will marry Kuchiki Byakuya, but you don't know his background?
Rukia winced as Kiyone's voice reverberated in her head. Yes, she knew he came from a wealthy family, but she never thought he was more than that. Well, who ever presumed she would get engaged to the man who has a company that created her cell phone.
Sighing, she tried to put aside this whole family background. Her eyes then glanced briefly at the shoji door. Fifteen minutes have been passed since the guard left her alone in this room, but there was still no sign from Kuchiki family's representative. The soft twang from furin bell that hung over the porch became the only sound in this silent room. Outside, the sun commenced to sink, leaving a trail of crimson on the west.
Rukia took a cup of tea and sipped it to ease her feeling. It would be the first time she met the other Kuchiki family members. Question after question flashed back in her head, mostly about their intention. Even though she has a hunch why they called her to come here, but these questions kept trickling inside, seeking her concern. And it made her became more nervous because she did not know what kind of situation she will face, remembering her track record along this day she had a feeling it is not going to be easy.
The sound of the shoji door slid open brought Rukia's attention back. She put the cup, and focused her gaze on the door.
There, standing an old man and from his appearance Rukia guessed he was in his late fifty, a bit younger than Kuchiki Ginrei. At first glance they looked similar due to the same hair color and mustache, but this man has a short hair cut, and his face was more rigid than Ginrei. He wore a black kimono with one crest under the collar on the back. The kimono made from fine silk with a white obi attached around it. His dark gray haori swayed softly when he entered the room.
As he walked, Rukia noticed there was a woman who followed him from behind. She was a beautiful woman, and even though she was in the same age with that man, but it seemed her beauty never faded by time. She wore a grayish blue iromuji kimono with also one crest under the collar on the back. It combined with brocade obi that made her appearance not only look formal, but also elegant.
Rukia got up from her seat and bowed to greet them, while trying to avoid the thought about her training suit was very informal and far from decent for this situation. Taking a deep breath, she straightened her posture, ready for this meeting.
However, both of them stopped in the middle of the room. A vague look of shock entered their wide eyes as they finally set their gaze on Rukia for the first time. Though the woman quickly regained from the jolt, but the man still could not believe what he has just seen.
"You!"
That man's voice almost made Rukia cringe. It was so fierce and cold. His face looked tense and he gazed at her furiously.
"What are you doing here?" He continued without taking his eyes of hers.
Rukia blinked. A look of confusion came across her face.
Did they ever meet before?
No. She was sure it was their first meeting. But, why did he react like he knew her? And why did he seem angry?
Rukia opened her mouth to answer, but before she gave any responses, she watched the woman take one stride forward and whispered something to him. They exchanged a stare for a moment, before turning back to Rukia.
"Are you Fukuda Rukia?" the woman asked.
Rukia nodded hesitantly. The way they were looking at her sending uncomfortable feeling inside. Despite they came from the same family with Ginrei, but their aura was quite different, more pressing and intimidating, especially from that man.
"I'm Kuchiki Okuni and this is my brother, Kuchiki Kaito." She introduced before inviting Rukia to sit.
A deep, heavy silence filled the air and she found it was really difficult to breathe under their intense stare. From her place, Rukia could feel they were studying her from head to toe, as if searching for something. Her fingers curled under the table, gripping the tip of her jacket, while her eyes tried to focus to the wall behind them.
"You must know why we invited you here." Okuni's voice broke the stillness. Her tone was soft, but firm at the same time.
"Yes," Rukia answered shortly. Her grasp tightened, trying to push this uneasiness away. She did not know why, but something's amiss. She could feel that.
"So, I will not hesitate to ask these questions." Okuni looked at Rukia, continuing to observe her for a few moments.
"Who are you? Where are you coming from? And what's your intention?" She asked while keeping her expression as neutral as possible.
Rukia's forehead wrinkled when she heard Okuni's questions.
"Don't take me wrong, Miss Fukuda. But, from all sides, it's really unusual. The woman from nowhere suddenly appeared as Byakuya's fiancée. Of course, as his family I have to ask these questions." Okuni continued. Her expression did not change, so did Kaito. They kept their gaze on her, waiting.
"I…" Rukia paused. It was really strange. Had lord Kuchiki never told his family about her?
When she agreed to come here, she thought they just want to meet her, and discuss about this engagement. However, it appeared they knew nothing about her and the vow between the two families.
"My name is Fukuda Rukia," She finally introduced herself, pushing aside her own question. "I came from Karakura town," she continued politely.
"About my intention… I don't have any of it. Kuchiki san and I—"
"Since when Byakuya sama and you get together?" Okuni cut her words, neglecting Rukia's explanation.
Rukia took a short breath to calm her heart beat. The way they asked and stared at her made her feel like being interrogated.
"We met two weeks ago, and we-"
"Two weeks ago!"
Rukia flinched. She shifted her gaze at Kaito who looked at her fiercely.
"Don't say you just know him in that short of time."
"Er... yes and it's because lord Ku-"
Rukia paused, remembering her promise to Byakuya to not say any words until he came.
"I mean… I understand if Kuchiki Kaito dono and Kuchiki Okuni dono felt this engagement is not right, but I don't have any bad inten—"
"Don't lie."
Rukia bit her lower lip as Kaito's cold voice cut her words. She did not understand why he looked really mad at her.
"I know you hide something from us," he looked at Rukia sharply.
"What do you want? Money or fame?"
Rukia close her eyes, trying to remain unaffected by his words. Though she had guessed she would get this kind of question, still, hearing it again and again really hurt her pride.
"Kaito dono," Okuni said calmly. "Don't say something like that. Let Miss Fukuda explain it."
"I've already explained it. I don't have any bad intention." Rukia said while maintaining her voice as polite as possible.
"What's your job then?" Kaito continued to ask.
Rukia knew it was a simple question, just for formality, but the combination between his fierce stare and this question kept making Rukia felt more uncomfortable in her place.
"I'm a mangaka."
"A mangaka?" Kaito said with a dismissive tone. "Did it consider a job?" He grunted.
Rukia tightened her grips to prevent her emotion that started flaring up due to his words. If she knew she would be insulted like this, she would never come to this place.
"What about your parents?"
"Yes?"
"She asked about your parents. What's their job?" Kaito said impatiently.
"I…" Rukia paused. "I… I've lost my parents in a shipwreck when I was child." Rukia struggled to finish her words. A deep pain entered her violet eyes and she felt a slight pang in her chest as she had to be reminded about the incident. Her fingers curled even more stringent, trying to hide her grief from them. She did not want this family to think she was weak, and insulted her even more.
Hearing the unexpected answer from Rukia made their expression changed a bit.
"I'm sorry for your lost, Miss Fukuda." Okuni said after a moment.
Kaito and Okuni were ready to give her another question, but the sound of Shoji door slid open diverted their attention of Rukia.
"It seemed like you two have already met Rukia,"
Rukia turned her eyes at door, and she could not hide her surprise when she found Kuchiki Ginrei was standing there.
"Lord Kuchiki."
The three of them immediately stood up and bowed as Ginrei entered the room.
"Lord Kuchiki," Kaito said as they returned to sit. "Aren't you still supposed to be under the treatment?" his tone full of concern when he asked this question.
"I'm tired of just lying in bed."Ginrei took a seat at the end of the table.
"But my lord, your condition…" Okuni said in worry, nonetheless before she could finish her remark, Ginrei raised his hand to stop her.
"I'm fine, Okuni." Ginrei said before shifting his gaze to Rukia. A warm smile tugged at his lips as he saw her.
"I'm glad we finally can meet again, Rukia." He said. "And welcome to my house. I hope you feel comfortable here."
"Lord Kuchiki," Rukia greeted as she bowed. "I heard you've fallen sick. How are you? I'm sorry because I couldn't visit you before." Rukia said in sincere. She was truly upset because she could not find a time to see him sooner.
"My condition is a lot of better, Rukia. And you needn't to worry. I know you're so busy because of Byakuya." He said meaningfully.
Kaito and Okuni looked at them, frowning. This scene was very strange for them because it seemed Ginrei has already known her before.
"Pardon me, Lord Kuchiki," Kaito said. "Did you know that girl?"
"Yes, of course I know her." Ginrei turned his gaze back to Kaito. "She is Fukuda Rukia. Byakuya's fiancee." He answered calmly.
"Do you already know about their marriage arrangement, but still agree with it?"
"Yes, I don't find anything wrong with that."
Kaito stared at him in disbelief. How could Ginrei so easily agreed with this arrangement.
"But, we don't know anything about her. How could you let a stranger from unknown background like her entered our family? I really hope you're being wise in your decision, my lord."
Rukia's expression darkened as she heard Kaito's words. She opened her mouth, but before she could say something, she heard Ginrei's voice echoed in this room.
"Be careful with your words, Kaito. I will never let you say something like that to Rukia." He said sharply. "And she was not just a random girl like you think before. She was Fukuda's granddaughter."
Kaito's eyes widen in shock. "You mean… she's the girl who you're always looking for all this time?"
"Yes, she is."
Kaito's jaw tightened. This sudden announcement really beyond his expectation, he never thought this day would come. Why he could not realize the connection between it when she heard Rukia's name?
"Why did you never tell us about it before?"
Kaito knew, since seventeen years ago, Ginrei was looking for a girl who would become Byakuya's wife based on the old promise with his best friend. But, this engagement was not fully accepted by some of Kuchiki's members, yet they couldn't do anything because both Ginrei and Sojun had made a decision about it. However, when he heard the Fukuda family was missing, he thought this engagement finally would end without any problem. Nonetheless, he never expected Ginrei would continue to find that girl, even succeed to bring her here.
"I was waiting the right time to introduce her to the family," Ginrei answered. "Besides, if I told you I was still looking for her, you all would do anything to stop it, am I right?"
Kaito fell silent. But from his expression, he still has not accepted Ginrei's decision.
"But, my lord, her face…" Okuni who kept silent along the conversation finally spoke. She paused momentarily while taking a glance at Rukia.
"She was not her." Ginrei stated firmly.
Her?
Rukia looked at them, confuse.
"But, Byakuya sama will…"
"You don't have to worry, Okuni. That woman had gone and Byakuya has already forgotten her."
A frown wrinkled Rukia's forehead as she tried to guess what they were talking about. From the glimpse of information that she could get, it seemed Byakuya had a girlfriend in the past, but his family disagreed with their relationship.
"Pardon me, lord Kuchiki. How about lady Shirayuki? Both of them has met and looked comfortable toward each other. We can't cancel all the plans for the future married between Byakuya sama and lady Shirayuki."
Lady Shirayuki? How many women actually in his life? Rukia thought while keeping her focus to this conversation.
"Since the beginning, I never gave my permission for you to do it."
"But my lord..."
"There is only one woman who will become Byakuya's wife. And she's sitting right in front of you."
Kaito closed his eyes. He must do something to stop it before it's too late.
"How do you sure she was that girl, not someone who pretends to be her?"
At this question, Ginrei gave him a slight smile before he turned to Rukia.
"Would you like to show us your necklace?"
Rukia nodded before taking her necklace out of her jacket.
Suddenly, the room turned into a deep silent. Both Kaito and Okuni stunned in their place as they saw the necklace around Rukia's neck.
"Now, do you believe her?" Ginrei's voice broke the stillness.
"No doubt, she will be the next lady Kuchiki."

:
.
It was practically dawn when Byakuya arrived at Kuchiki manor, thirty minutes after he called Rukia in the studio. The sky gradually changed its color; almost dark, leaving only a hazy orange color on the edge of the horizon. There were two guards who oversaw the front gate. Upon seeing Byakuya came out the car, they immediately bowed and greeted him.
Byakuya's expression remained solemn as he walked through the gate, hiding all those uninvited emotions that raged within him.
For Byakuya, before he saw Rukia's sudden appearance on TV this late afternoon, today supposed to be a perfect day for him. Most of his plans went well as he predicted, including his plan to introduce Rukia to the public. He knew it was very risky decision, even Yoruichi annoyingly yelled at him because his action last night was too bold. But, he has thought all the consequences and already prepared for it. It was the best decision after all. And it has been proven. All the news since the announcement slowly gave a positive response, because now everyone curious about who Rukia was, rather than talk about how scandalous this sudden engagement.
However, this good side won't last long. One stupid statement from that girl almost ruined all his plans. Did she ever think her statement would make everyone throw a suspicious look toward their engagement? What if his Jii-sama did not believe in their relationship?
There was a reason why he ordered her to keep her mouth shut. The media, especially the gossip one, like to twist the fact for their own income. And now he has to do extra work to clear the mess that she left today.
The soothing sound of flowing water grazed his ears as he walked on the bridge. Merely, he found out the sound was not enjoyable as usual when he knew Rukia was in Kuchiki manor right now.
Byakuya did not deny her presence in his house quite bothering him. But, it was all reasonable. After seeing how she disobeyed his instruction to not say any words about their engagement today, he doubted Rukia will follow his words this time, remembering how easily she could be provoked and how high-tempered she was, the possibility to make the same mistake was very high.
However, he knew there was another reason that sent turmoil within him, the main one why this uneasiness crawled inside.
It was about the elder's reaction once they finally met Rukia. And it was not only because she was his fiancée now, but the fact she shares the same face with her would only worsen the situation.
"You don't have to worry, Byakuya sama."
Byakuya's jaw tightened as uninvited flashback suddenly entered his mind. This situation, where Rukia's was in his house to face the elders, evoked an old memory within him, a desolate one about what he and she had through years ago.
The images were so vivid, how her beautiful and delicate form was trembling because of his family's cold demeanor and their hurtful comments toward her. But, she kept trying to hold back her tears, even gave him the same warm smile.
"I'm alright."
Another memory, the old one, like a film strip, flickered back in his head. For a brief moment, Byakuya seemed to drift in his own thought when her figure flashed before his eyes. There, under the moonlight, she smiled. But it hurt him because he knew nothing's alright.
Byakuya closed his eyes momentarily, trying to dismiss those flashback away of his head. Wasn't he already decided to lock all those memories when he chose to do his plan?
As soon as those images gone, Byakuya continued his journey while making another mental note to not let his guard down.
However, even though he succeed to cast those memories out from his head, but he still felt restless. Which he thought it was ridiculous.
Except… all these uneasiness appeared because he felt a bit worried toward Rukia's condition in his house.
No. Byakuya dismissed that thought immediately.
Why did he have to feel worry for a stranger like her?
Besides, the situation was completely different from what he experienced before. He definitely did not have any feeling toward her, and even though she has similar appearance, but she was strong enough to handle his family's cold stares, and sharp words. And the main reason why she would be fine is she was the woman whom chosen by his grandfather. No one in his family could do the same action that they did to her many years ago.
Byakuya stopped in front of the living room. His ears attempted to catch any sounds from inside. But, it was so quiet, only the soft sound from the furin bell that hung behind him.
Without hesitant Byakuya reached his hand to slid open the door. He was ready to encounter any words that Kuchiki elders will throw towards him. Nonetheless, he could not conceal his surprise when he saw Ginrei's presence in the room.
"Jii-sama?"
.
:
.
"Welcome home, Byakuya," Ginrei addressed his grandson with a smile on his lips. "We've been waiting for you,"
Byakuya entered the room slowly, still feeling puzzle about Ginrei's presence in Kuchiki manor. However, he kept maintaining to look calm. He bowed respectfully as he was in front of him before getting a place next to Rukia. Their eyes met for a brief second, but Byakuya immediately shifted it back to Ginrei.
"Jii-sama, how's your condition?" Byakuya asked with concern.
"I've never felt much better than now,"
"It's a good news. But, Jii-sama is still under the treatment, so it wasn't a wise decision to leave the hospital."
Ginrei waved his hand. "I can't just lying in the bed while your married are coming."
"Pardon me, lord Kuchiki. But, the elders still don't approve this engagement." Kaito's voice brought their attention to him.
"No matter, she's the granddaughter of your best friend, and you made this promise a long time ago, still, for the family, she's a stranger, a commoner."
From the corner of his eyes Byakuya could see Rukia's shoulder stiffened. He knew it will hurt her, to hear something rude like that, even he almost overcome by a feeling to help her. But, he has already decided to not let his guard down. Besides, he still believed she could get through this meeting decently.
"Kaito, I've already told you to be careful with your words." Ginrei said as he narrowed his eyes.
"My apology, lord Kuchiki. But, I'm not going to take my words back. She is just an orphan without any good educational background. Her late parents came from ordinary farmer. And she said she was a mangaka. What kind of job is that? How could you sure she will good enough to become the next lady Kuchiki. She will only bring embarrassment to our family and—"
"Though my parents were only ordinary farmer, but they always taught me about what the insolent attitude is."
Rukia whispered, but her voice was very clear to be heard by all the people in this room, and as soon as she finished her words, the room became silent. All their eyes were on hers now.
"Tsk, tsk, but it seemed your parents forgot to teach you about how to respect people who older than you." Kaito broke the silent. His eyes looked at Rukia sharply. "You haven't even been officially Byakuya sama's wife, but you're already being disrespectful toward us."
Rukia took a deep breath. It looked like she almost reached her limit, and it was all visible in her next words.
"You're right, Kuchiki Kaito dono. My parents never saw me growing up and taught me a lot of things about life. But, they once told me, being polite doesn't mean willingly to be insulted and humiliated. If you wish to be respected, you must respect others first. Even then, I apologize if my words made you feel being disrespectful." Rukia bowed stiffly.
The corner of Byakuya's lips lifted slightly. All his worry began to fade because it seemed Rukia could handle the situation better than he thought. And he did not deny he was quite enjoying the way Rukia's react toward Kaito's words.
"Very good answer," Ginrei said with satisfied smile, as if he has predicted Rukia will never let anyone do something bad toward her.
Just like her father.
"I think her answer was enough as the proof she deserves to be the next lady Kuchiki. She has the characters that needed. She was brave, very honest and a wise person." Ginrei paused for a moment and looked at Rukia.
"Besides, nothing's wrong with her job. It's amazing to have a mangaka in our family." He continued while giving Rukia a smile, making her feeling warm up a bit.
"But, my lord..."
"My decision was final. I will talk to the council to announce this good news."
Then Ginrei shifted his gaze back to Byakuya and Rukia.
"It's a lie if I said I'm not surprised with your sudden announcement in the media. It's been more than a week since both of you meet, and I can say it didn't end nicely."
"We did what Jii-sama has suggested to take our time to know each other." Byakuya answered.
"I see. It's very wise choice." Ginrei nodded. "So, when you two will get married?"
Rikia gulped. "Well… we still—"
"We will get married next weekend,"
Flabbergasted, Rukia abruptly turned to Byakuya. A hint of shock entered her big eyes as she stared at him. But, he just stood there, ignoring her questioning look; which made Rukia became more irritated.
"Is… isn't it too early?" Okuni looked at them, frowning. Beside her, Kaito remained silent, but from his expression he did not look pleased by their answer.
"No, it's not too early," Byakuya paused for a moment. And then, for Rukia's surprise, he took her left hand and held it, before placed their hand on the table, so everyone in that room could see it.
"Our engagement has been established ever since we were kids. That's why I think it's the perfect time for us to get married."
No. No. No! It's not the perfect time! The voice inside Rukia's head screamed.
"I agree with Byakuya." Ginrei finally spoke. "There was no reason to prevent something good."
Rukia's face turned to pale. And she could feel the ground where she sat began to swing, then quivering, and finally crumbling down.
It's impossible...
"Kaito and Okuni, I will leave this wedding preparation for you. Set everything as good as possible."
"It's such an honor for us, Lord Kuchiki." Okuni bowed, followed by Kaito, even though he still seemed disapprove with this marriage plan.
"Ah, one more thing, where you two will live after the married?"
Rukia could feel her stomach tightened when she heard this question, as if the fact she would get married next weekend was not enough to make her felt terrible.
"We will live in my apartment," Byakuya answered shortly.
"I think it's a bad idea,"
"The apartment is not a good place to raise a kid,"
Rukia almost cough as she heard Ginrei's words. "Ano, lord Kuchiki. The news about I'm expecting is not true, and I—"
"But, I'm sure you will, Rukia. So, it's important to prepare the best place for your children from now."
Rukia could not help but blushed in embarrassment when she heard Ginrei's words. She could not follow this conversation anymore. Fortunately, he did not prolong this conversation.
"There is one house that came to my mind, the one that you had purchased five years ago. I believe it will be the best place for both of you."
Rukia flinched slightly as she felt Byakuya tightened his grip on hers. She glanced briefly to see what happened to him, but his expression unreadable like usual.
"Alright," he answered flatly. "I will send people to renovate that house. But, until it finish, we will stay in my apartment."
Ginrei nodded with satisfaction.
"If this conversation has ended, I asked my permission to take Rukia home."
"Yes, both of you can leave now."
Byakua and Rukia got up from their seat. After saying farewell words, they stepped outside the room.
They walked in silence. Both seemed drowned in their own thought. However, as they were in the middle of the bridge, Rukia abruptly stopped.
"Why had you never told me about the date of our married?" Rukia asked. Her eyes narrowed.
"You've already known now." Byakuya answered nonchalantly.
Rukia threw a glare toward him.
"Stop playing with me! You said you would tell me all your plans. But now you—"
"Jii-sama suspects our relationship," Byakuya cut her words.
"What do you mean?"
Byakuya did not answer, instead he turned around and continued walking.
"Hey, you still don't answer my question,"
"It's not the right place," Byakuya said as he stepped to his car.
When they were inside the car. Rukia repeated her question once more.
"I know from the way he looked at us. He did not one hundred percent believes with our plan to get married." Byakuya answered while he turned on the machine. However, the truth is he knew Ginrei suspected them when he asked them to stay in that house. Ginrei knew the house had a meaning for him.
Rukia fell silent. All her anger towards Byakuya started to fade, replacing with worry feeling. If Ginrei suspected their relationship, he would reject all the treatments and his condition would become worse. She could not let that happen.
"So... what we're going to do?"
"There is no other choice but get married next weekend. I know it's all sudden, yet the soon we get marry, the soon Jii-sama will get the treatment he needed."
There was another silent enveloped them before Rukia opened her mouth.
"I see..." Rukia spoke faintly before lowering her eyes.
"Anyway, I still consider what you did this afternoon in front of the reporters really unacceptable." Byakuya said after a moment.
This sudden change of topic made Rukia groaned and looked at Byakuya tiredly. "Can we not talk about that incident? I really wanted to forget it."
"No. We have to, because you almost ruin everything that I've planned." Byakuya said coldly, ignoring her frustrating expression.
"I've already told you not to say any words."
"I know, but like I said on the phone, I can't let them spread the false rumor about me."
"And you think I don't feel ashamed when I said those words?" Rukia ran a hand through her short raven hair in frustration. "Now the whole nation knew about that…"
"Still, it was not an excuse to disobey my order." Byakuya stated tonelessly.
"And for you know, you will face this kind of situation again in the future due to our marriage, and perhaps even worse than what happened to you today."
"But—" Rukia still looked disgruntled, but Byakuya made a motion with his hand to make her stop.
"Listen, they will never stop even if you make the right statement. Nothing can satisfy their thirst. You also saw it too, right? How they kept chasing you even though you already had explained your condition."
Byakuya paused. He glanced briefly at Rukia before continuing his remark.
"When you met the reporters you should speak only as it needed, be wise in choosing the words and the rest is keeps your mouth shut."
"So… is that the cause why you always appeared so cold on TV?" Rukia murmured silently.
"What did you say?" Byakuya seemed taken aback by her sudden statement. Even though it was only a soft mumble, still Byakuya could hear every word.
"Nothing," Rukia shook her head.
Byakuya kept his eyes on Rukia, studying her intensely before focusing his gaze back on the street. It seemed like she has keener thought than he ever presumed. He never expected if this woman could guess the reason behind his behavior in front of the camera so easily. Even thought it was not the main cause why his heart and temperament changed, but it still took a part of it.
Soon, after his career climb to the top, he slowly transformed into the cold-hearted Byakuya that everyone knew. He realized being a friendly and welcoming person could be a poison for himself in the midst of intense competition in this celebrity world. This cold behavior did not only help him through the complexity of this world, but also engraved him in the top position until now.
"However, I will let you this time, considering you are still new with this kind of situation. And I hope you will learn from it, and not repeat the same mistake in the future." Byakuya continued, pushing aside Rukia's statement from his head.
"Remember, one small mistake can make us regret for entire life."
Rukia was silent. She knew the other meaning of his words. Slowly, she lowered her gaze and stared at the Chappy pin on her bag. After some moment of thought she finally spoke.
"I understand what you want to say. So, I apologize for my behavior before,"
Byakuya seemed to contend by her apology. Nevertheless, it did not last long because Rukia prove how stubborn she was with her next speech.
"However, I can't promise to stay quiet." Rukia's words were clear, and her tone was unwavering, showing how she would not let anyone make her down.
"I just can't be silent and let them talk shit about me. I have pride." She looked at Byakuya with determination.
"But, I will try to not repeat the same mistake, and be more careful next time. Even though I'm not really sure, depend on what they will talk or write about me. But, I will not let my words and attitude hurt lord Kuchiki, moreover ruin our plan. That's the only thing that I can promise you."
Byakuya's expression did not change, because deep inside he had already known this girl will never follow his instruction so easily. It was annoying him so much, but strangely, he found it was actually quite interesting.
"Make sure you keep your promise then." He finally agreed.
Rukia nodded firmly. "I will and you don't have to worry." Her eyes stared at Byakuya deeply, assuring him that she was serious.
If you like Chappy answered this phone~~
Rukia opened her bag and searched for her cell phone.
"Do you not have any ringtones?"
Rukia looked at Byakuya. Her gaze narrowed. "Do you have a problem?" She said before answering her phone.
"Rukia's speaking. Oh! Inoue!"
"I'm fine. How about you? Are you alright? Are the reporters already gone?"
"Ah… I see. I'm going to Keigo place then. Please take care, Inoue." Rukia ended the conversation.
"Why do they keep staying in front of my apartment," Rukia grumbled as she put her cell phone back to her bag.
"Who's Keigo?"
"He's my high school friend. It seemed I'm going to sleep in his place again." Rukia sighed.
Byakuya turned his attention to Rukia. He did not know why but something bothering him when he heard her remark.
"Do you often stay in his place?"
Rukia nodded. "Yes, especially when I don't get any inspiration. You know, his place is the best one to get inspiration because…"
Of course, for Rukia, staying in Keigo's place did not have any meaning. But, it was totally different from Byakuya's side.
"Anyway, why are you kept driving?" Rukia looked outside from her window. "We've just passed the station."
Byakuya did not give any answer, instead he kept driving his car, avoiding the questioning look in Rukia's face.
"Hey, where are you going?"
"My apartment,"
"Huh? Your apartment? Do you forget something there?"
"No."
Rukia looked at him in wonder. "So, why are we getting there?"
"It's because you're going to stay with me tonight."
Rukia nodded unwittingly. "I see…" However, she paused as something hit her head.
Abruptly she turned to him, with huge eyes and mouth gaped, she stared at him in horror.
"What did you just say?"
.
:
.
"How long you're going to stand there?" Byakuya asked, glancing briefly at her while unlocking his apartment door.
"Aoo… domm… wamm… to…"
Byakuya turned around and looked at her with an impassive expression. A few steps behind him, Rukia stood rigidly, like a statue with her brown knit cap and purple scarf covered her entire face and neck, except her eyes that looked at him fiercely.
"What about you take off your scarf? The only thing I can hear is ridiculous mumbles from you."
Rukia threw another glare before lowering her scarf. "I said I don't want to stay here. And I'm not going to take off my scarf. What if the reporters find out I visited your apartment in the night? They will spread another false gossip about me again." Rukia put back the scarf to cover her mouth, avoiding a sharp stare from Byakuya.
"It's useless." Byakuya said after a minute passed.
Rukia's brow furrowed and her eyes gazed at Byakuya in wonder. "What do you mean?"
"You're my fiancée. So it's easy for them to guess it was you who visited my apartment."
Rukia cursed silently. It was not until a day since Byakuya announced their engagement, but it seemed like she has lost half of her privacy.
Shutting her eyes, Rukia tried to calm her mind. She was really exhausted right now. Her head seemed like wanting to blow up due to the non-stop 'surprises' that she got since she opened her eyes this morning. And being in his apartment only worsen her condition.
"I want to get home now."
"You're not allowed to leave this place."
"By who?"
"Me."
It really has gone too far!
Rukia could not believe what she has just heard. Did he really serious with his words? Who did he think he was?
She opened her mouth to respond. Yet, before she could utter any words, Byakuya has turned around and proceeded to open the doorway, ignoring her like usual he did.
"You will worsen our situation if you come back to Karakura town. What if there is a reporter taking your picture in your friend's house." Byakuya's tone sounded displeased as he recalled their conversation in the car. He really disliked the idea where she wanted to stay in her friend's house. Moreover, her friend was a man.
"I've already told you. It's a manga café, and I often stay there to get inspiration."
"Still, if the reporter finds out I let you sleep in a manga café, they're going to be questioning our relationship." Byakuya said as he walked into his apartment room. He pushed several code numbers at an instrument on the wall to bend off the alarm.
"But, they will do the same thing for me if they discover my presence here."
"Like what?" Byakuya looked at Rukia with bored expression.
"Well, you know…" Rukia gulped. An invited blush lit her cheeks. "They will release the news about… something… that man and woman…"
"I don't find staying in your fiancé house is a criminal." Byakuya cut her words. He observed the flustered woman before him intently, and found out it was quite amusing because a few hours ago, she was so courage to face the cold and arrogant wall of his family, but now she looked completely innocent with adorable pink blush on her cheeks and how her brows twitched, trying to formulate the right words for this conversation.
However, Byakuya never let this sort of emotion swirled last long. As soon as it heave in sight, he dismissed it, buried it immediately. And in a very short time he has already come back to his usual impassive expression. There was no emotion in his eyes as he stared at Rukia.
"Few minutes ago, I got the info the reporters still hang around Karakura town. So, you don't have any choice but stay in my place." Byakuya continued. "Besides, we still have something to discuss about our future married."
Rukia grumbled quietly. She did not want to do another talk, at least not now, when her mind and thought had tousled after a long conversation with his family this evening. She just wanted to go home and sleep under her favorite kotatsu.
"You will only draw people's attention if you're still standing there,"
"Can we do this conversation next time? I just want to go home and sleep."
"No," Byakuya answered shortly. "My answer is still the same."
Rukia blew out a sigh. He was indeed the heir of Kuchiki, very stubborn and arrogant. However, Rukia was too exhausted to take off another argument. She looked at Byakuya with hesitant expression. There was an invincible battle raised within her, whether she should refuse his idea or not. Perhaps, she can convince him again later, to let her go back to Karakura town, Rukia thought as she closed her eyes. And then, with kept replaying those words, in very reluctant movement, she finally walked into his apartment room.
Deep inside, Rukia still disagreed to stay in his place tonight. However, she could not help but felt amazed by the design of his apartment room. It has a modern style with dark brown and white color dominated the room. The interior was minimalist with some furniture, but it was not overly noisy or overpowering. And for Rukia, the most important things are it did not make her feel intimidated like other luxury places because the design was actually comforting. It turned out, albeit Byakuya was a cold man, but he has a very good taste.
Rukia glanced at Byakuya who was busy pouring his drink in a mini bar that located near the kitchen. She bit her lower lips as she realized it too awkward to stand in the middle of the room alone. Her eyes observed the place for once more before deciding to come near the window. A soft gasp came out her mouth as soon as her eyes caught glimpse of the scenery outside.
There, under the dark sky, millions lamps from the buildings and cars shone like an ocean of stars. Rukia had never experienced anything like this before. Her lips parted and her eyes got bigger in amazement as she watched those gleaming lights. It was very beautiful and riveting.
"Oh, we can see the Tokyo tower there." Rukia exclaimed. Her violet eyes sparkled with excitement when she saw the sight of the tower.
As Rukia's eyes roamed over those shimmered sea of light, she noticed she was not as nervous as before. It was so weird because all the negative feelings seemed faded away as soon she saw the scenery.
"Do you never go there?"
Rukia shifted her gaze to the right and found out Byakuya was already standing beside her. He offered her a glass of orange juice.
"Nope, I never have time." Rukia said as she took the glass. Her eyes set on the tower for once more, while remembering the whole meeting with her editor which has lessened her mood to walk around Tokyo.
"Anyway, can I get wine too?" Rukia asked as she glanced at Byakuya's glass. Rukia never drink alcohol before because she was still nineteen, and even though sometimes she wanted to try it; especially after she came back from the meeting with her editor, but Renji always there to prevent her.
However, tonight is different. What she had just experienced during the last few hours exceeds all meetings with her editor. She really needed it to soothe her mind, to release this pressure from her shoulder. Besides, it's only a wine, and Renji does not need to know, does he?
"No, you can't."
"Huh?" Rukia could not hide her surprise when she heard Byakuya's answer. "Why?" Her attention now fully at Byakuya who kept his eyes on the scenery outside.
Byakuya took a sip of his wine, savoring the taste of it. Then, after a moment, with his monotonous voice, he answered her question.
"Because you're still underage."
Rukia blinked. And not until a minute her eyes became wider with a hint of shock attached on it.
"Hey, I'm not underage." Rukia protested. "I will turn twenty next month. And I..." Rukia paused. A frown creased her forehead.
"But… how did you know?"
Byakuya glanced briefly at her from the corner of his eyes, before averting it to continue relishing the night sky outside.
"It's all written in your file,"
Rukia's frown deepened, attempting to analyze his remarks. "What file? There was no file…" Rukia stopped. Her eyes got even bigger as Tetsuzaemon Iba's image crossed her mind. Byakuya must be getting her file from him. How dare he read her personal data!
"Hey, it was illegal you know!" Rukia looked at him sharply.
"I'm your fiancé, so it wasn't illegal." Byakuya took another sip before completely turning to her. "Also, I'm sure you've already read mine."
Under his gaze, Rukia felt her cheeks warm up and slowly changed its color to crimson. She did not deny she was peeking slightly at his personal data when she read one of Kiyone's magazines this afternoon. Nevertheless, it did not mean Byakuya could pull a comparison like that. It was still not fair for her because his data was not a secret. It had written in all tabloid and gossip sites. And of course, when she read the tabloid, it did not mean she has interest in him. She was just a little bit curious. Nothing's more.
So, the information about he was older than her by five years different, and they shared the same birthday month were just regular information for her, something that did not draw her attention. Even she did not care when she found out Byakuya like spicy food and banana, but dislikes sweets, and how he liked to...
Rukia frowned as she realized she remembered more than it should. She must read too much magazine this afternoon, Rukia thought while shaking her head.
"Well, I admit I read a little, but it-"
"I supposed we have another things that more important to discuss." Byakuya cut her remark flatly. He gestured Rukia to follow him toward the sofa.
Rukia let out another sigh. She stared at Byakuya's back for a moment before following him. It's really going to be a very long night.
"So, we're finally discuss about this future married, right?" Rukia put her sling bag on her lap before giving Byakuya her full attention.
"Do you have a boyfriend?"
The sudden question from Byakuya made Rukia startled a bit. She looked at him in confuse.
"Well… no."
"Is there any men who close to you right now?"
"No." Rukia answered. Her eyebrow furrowed, wondering, because Byakuya kept asking the question that have nothing to do with their marriage plan.
"Are you sure?" Byakuya looked at her doubtfully as he remembered the man voice that addressed Rukia with 'darling, sweet heart, etc' few days ago, when Byakuya called her for the first time.
"Yes, I'm sure. But, why are you asking me these questions?"
Byakuya's examined her thoroughly before giving her the answer.
"Before we talk about this wedding thing further, I want to make sure none of us committed relationship with another person while we perform this marriage."
"Oh…" Rukia nodded. "Well, what about you?" Rukia could not stop herself to ask that question. She knew Byakuya was famous not only because of his status as a great actor, but also his relationship with many women. And she heard a lot of things when she was in Kuchiki manor today, like the glimpse information of his unknown girlfriend or about lady Shirayuki that supposed to be with him if Kuchiki Ginrei never found her. So, it made her curious about what kind of relationship he has with these women.
"No, I don't have any." Byakuya said nonchalantly.
"Are you serious?" Rukia shouted in disbelief, but she immediately covered her mouth as she realized her mistake.
"I'm sure we're here not to discuss about my private life." Byakuya stared at her ferociously.
"Sorry," Rukia mumbled. But, it was you who started it first, Rukia added quietly.
There was a heavy silence enveloped them. Merely, after some moments, Byakuya decided to continue their conversation.
"As you've already know, my family will take care all the preparations of our wedding. And though our marriage only temporary, still, we have to follow it all seriously."
"Alright," Rukia nodded.
"And perhaps you will be summoned to main house again because you're the bride and you need a lot of preparation than me."
Rukia's expression changed a bit when Byakuya mentioned she will come back to Kuchiki manor and meet the elders again.
"Can I skip the meeting and only meet them on the wedding day?" Rukia could feel her stomach tightened as knew she has to face the cold treatment from his family again.
"Unfortunately, no."
Rukia let out a soft sigh. "I have a feeling they really dislike me, especially after what I did in the last meeting."
"You don't have to worry. Just behave like yourself in front of them."
That is the problem! Rukia grunted silently. Still clearly in his mind the way Kaito looked at her. He really liked someone who wanted to eat her alive.
"Actually, you did well today."
Rukia lifted her gaze in surprise. However, it seemed Byakuya did not have any interest to prolong this topic because when their eyes met he immediately changed the topic.
"And we have to specify the rules for it."
"Huh? What rules?"
"The arrangement we need to keep us in the line." Byakuya paused a moment.
"There are three rules that we must obey during our marriage. We have to do this because we will live together for couple months, in my presumption it will around six months, so we need to set what we should do and don't."
"Do you agree?"
It took some moments for Rukia to think about Byakuya's words. He was right. They need something to make everything in this fake married under control and not crossed the line.
"Sure, I agree with you."
Byakuya set his eyes on Rukia for one more time before stating the rules.
"Rule number one, don't interfere each other business."
Rukia nodded her head. "Deal." She said firmly.
"Rule number two, no sex in our marriage."
Rukia nodded mightily. "Absolutely deal!" She yelled.
"Rule number three. We have to kiss every time the camera's on."
She gave Byakuya another nod. "Of course we have to… What did you say?"
Rukia stared at Byakuya in puzzle as she realized something was not right.
"I don't like to repeat my words."
Rukia stunned. She almost did not know how to react besides looking at him with wide eyes and mouth open.
Is he serious with the last rule?
"I refuse to do rule number three! What kind of rule is that!"
"No, you can't." Byakuya said flatly.
"I've already told you. Jii-sama suspects our relationship." Byakuya continued his words before Rukia began another protest.
"But… why kiss? And… why we have to do that in front of the camera?"
"It's the best way to prove we're in love toward each other, and the more often we are seen together on camera, the more we can convince Jii-sama if we're in love."
Rukia felt her head began to throb in pain. It's the craziest thing she ever heard.
"Can we replace it with another gesture?" She asked, while hoping Byakuya could change his mind.
"No."
"But, you don't have to worry, because we only do that until Jii-sama's does his surgery and until his condition getting better."
Rukia closed her eyes. She hoped this was all just a dream. She never met Byakuya and never agreed to do this fake marriage, moreover all the rules.
But, she knew it all real, and it was too late to come back.
"Alright, we will do it." Rukia said as she sighed. "Besides, it's only temporary." She murmured while assuring herself. Then she opened her bag and took out her sketch book and a pen.
"What are you doing?"
"Well, I'm going to write it." Rukia said while flipping the paper. "You said it was important rules, so it's better to make it formal in a piece of paper and of course with our sign on it." Rukia continued. After founding a blank paper, she started to write the rules.
"Okay, now is my turn."
"What turn?"
"Well, you make your rules, so now is my time to set my owns."
Byakuya stared at her for a second. He did not deny it surprised him a bit because it was the first time someone set the rules on him.
Everyone knew, it was always him who controlled everything about what they should do or don't, including in the relationship. What Rukia was doing right now really against his principal, but instead of feeling annoyed or insulted, he felt… curious, the feeling that barely appeared in him because all this time he never put any interest with anyone.
"Rule number one," Rukia started without waiting for Byakuya's agreement. "Let me and Inoue to pay the debt."
"I refuse."
"What? Hey! I'm not refusing all your rules, so you have to accept this one!" Rukia protested.
"I've already stated, it's your own money and you can use that for anything you want."
Rukia closed her eyes, trying to control her emotion and clear her mind. She knew she would not be able to convince him if she let herself being controlled by emotion like this.
"Look, I know you've already told me, and we had argued about it so many times. But, please allow us to pay it. Inoue and I really grateful for your help that time, and the words thank you is not enough. So, I hope you can let us, to show our grateful and pay the money as it should." She said as she looked at Byakuya earnestly.
"Please, I've really tired right now to debate it with you. Why is so difficult to let us to pay?"
Byakuya was silent. Actually, he really did not care about that money. But, after seeing that determined look that reflected in her eyes, he decided to let Rukia and her friends to pay. Besides, just like her, he did not want to prolong this never-ending debate.
Rukia's face looked brighter when she saw a nod from Byakuya. "Thank you so much! We'll work hard to pay it!" she said as she bowed. Her smile never left her face because she finally could make Byakuya agree.
"Alright, let' continue. Rule number two..." Rukia paused as she yawned. She rubbed her eyelids that began to feel heavy. Then she looked up to see Byakuya.
"Can rule number two and three be postponed? I'm really tired, so I can't think clearly."
Byakuya did not say any words. Actually, he has lost interest about her rules. For him as long she followed his owns, it was more than enough.
"Do as you wish," he said tonelessly.
"Thank you." Rukia said while writing some notes on the paper. "Okay, now sign it."
Rukia handed the paper toward Byakuya. He took and studied it carefully. After making sure she did not make any mistake, Byakuya signed the paper with his name.
"Great. Now we're…" Rukia yawned for the second times. Her eyes slowly closed as drowsiness began to consume her.
"It's late. You can use the guess room to sleep."
Rukia shook her head. "No, I want to sleep here." Rukia said as she rested her head against the sofa. She has already decided, if she indeed have to stay tonight, she will sleep in the living room.
"Are you sure?" Byakuya asked hesitantly.
Rukia nodded. Her eyes were completely closed now. "Yes, good night, Kuchiki san."
Byakuya let out a sigh when he saw Rukia already fell asleep in a fraction of a second. How could she sleep easily like that? Considering it took a lot of time to convince her to stay here tonight.
He got up from his seat and went to the guess room. He took a blanket from the closet and brought it to Rukia. Slowly, he covered her.
"Sleep well," He said before walking to his own room.

Rukia stood in front of the door, staring at the Kirinji Ramen Shop's plate name straightly. It was still early when she left Byakuya's apartment. A morning breeze passes, waving her hair and the tip of her scarf.
"How long are you going to sleep?"
A soft pink blush adorned her cheeks as Byakuya's voice as well as the images when she woke up this morning crossed her head.
It was really a shame!
Rukia gave herself a mental slap.
How could she fall asleep so easily, so comfortably in a stranger's house?
Well, he was not totally stranger, considering he was her fiancé. Nonetheless, she knew it was not an excuse for her to over sleep, especially in this kind of situation. And as if it was not enough, it was Byakuya who woke her up.
And that's all the problems began.
Still clearly in her head how he had dressed in his fashionable 'movie star' style when he stood beside her, and called her name with his passive tone. Meanwhile, her woke up form could not describe with any words. Totally disaster. But, it was not the real problem. Her reaction when she opened her eyes was the main one.
She gawked at him!
For the Chappy's shake! She gaped like a foolish in front of him for a minute longer! And for her horror, she let her eyes admire his look in that fuckin' minute. How he looked so extremely handsome this morning and...
No!
Rukia shook her head, trying to dispel those images away. She must be so tired, so she could not control her mind this morning. Yes, she was sure she still half dreamed at that time. If she fully woke up, she would never think something stupid like that.
Okay. Focus.
Rukia patted her cheeks. At least, she was Karakura town now, even though she has to get back to Tokyo this afternoon to do the press conference about their wedding plan.
"This press conference is really important, so don't be late."
Rukia let out a sigh as Byakuya's voice reverberated in her head. How can she focus to finish her manga if she must round-trip from Karakura town to Tokyo every day?
"Alright, sensei!"
A loud sound that echoed inside the room, following by heavy footsteps approached the front door, brought Rukia back of her reverie. And not long after Rukia saw it slid open in harsh movement.
"Tsk, why doesn't he clean that board by himself?" Renji snorted while bringing a duster. "Did he know it so fuckin' cold outside and… Rukia!"
Rukia winced as she heard his loud voice. "Hi, Renji," she said tonelessly. She kept her eyes on him for a moment, watching how his expression slowly changed from surprise to angry.
"There you are midget! Shit! Where've you been! I called and texted you since yesterday, but no answer!"
"Idiot! My ears ache to hear your scream." Rukia snarled. "And how many times I should tell you to stop calling me midget, moron."
"Hey! It's because I'm worried!"
Rukia fell silent as she saw the look of worry entered Renji's eyes.
"Sorry," Rukia murmured. "There are so many things happen, so I could not call you early."
"Nah, it doesn't matter. There's another thing that's more important." Renji paused. He stared at Rukia hesitantly.
"I know it's funny, but when I came back from my special training I found out someone with a name and appearance like you will get married. I know it's not you and I..."
"It's me." Rukia cut his words.
"…and I just like… what!"
"I said that woman is me. I'm... getting married."
"No way!" Renji shouted loudly. "It's impossible! You can't… ouch!"
Renji yelled in pain as someone hit his head. He was already wanting to hit back when he realized it was Kirinji who punched him
"I've told you to clean the plate name, not screaming like a fool in front of my shop."
"But sensei, it's the most…" Renji fell silent as he saw a death glare from Kirinji.
"Clean the plate name, now. Or you will not get your lunch today." He stated coldly before turning to Rukia.
"And you, young lady. If you want to talk with this brat, just go inside. You two only make my customer run away." He grumbled while entering the shop.
"Not, you, Renji. You're only allowed to talk with her once you finished your job."
Renji grumbled inwardly.
"Well, see you later, Renji." Rukia said before taking a step to the shop.
Twenty minutes later, Renji finally finished his duty. And after he got permission from Kirinji, both of them took the seat at the corner of the shop, so they can get more privacy.
"You're joking, aren't you?" Renji said after Rukia finished her story about the beginning of this marriage arrangement. She told her friend everything, except her agreement with Byakuya.
Rukia let out a sigh before shaking her head faintly. "No, I'm not joking, Renji."
"Fuck!" Renji cursed loudly, ignoring a death glare from Kirinji who looked at them from the counter.
"Why did you not tell me something like this earlier? You know how I feel when I knew it from the tabloid." He said. Disappointment clearly heard in his voice.
"I'm sorry. I just..." Rukia paused. After a moment she let out a sigh.
"It's really surprise me, especially because after seventeen years, there was someone who searched for me. I'm so happy at that time, but then I found out my family has chosen a husband for me and well..."
"If you're unsure about it, why did you agree with the married?"
Because there was no other way! Rukia screamed inside her head. But, she only let a bitter smile crossed her lips as the answer.
"It's my Jiisan's last wish, to see me marry with his best friend's grandson."
"But, are you sure you will be happy with this marriage arrangement."
Rukia fell silent at Renji's words. It was the first time someone asked her about this question.
Happy or not. She could not decide it because she knew, in this fake married this kind of feeling will never exist between her and Byakuya.
"I don't know, Renji." Rukia said truthfully. Then Orihime and Ginrei's image crossed her mind. A soft smile graced her lips.
"But, perhaps it's not as bad as we thought."

.
"Alright, based on your schedule the press conference will be held this afternoon." Yoruichi said as she closed her notebook.
"Make sure you're not going to mess it." Her golden-colored eyes gazed at Byakuya meaningfully.
"You don't need to tell me how to handle the reporters." Byakuya's expression remained nonchalant, but his tone said otherwise.
"It's not that I doubt your ability, but it's your emotion that make me worry." She said while taking a piece of paper out of the drawer. She placed it on the table and showed it to Byakuya.
"There was news about your fiancée that posted in one of the news sites this morning, but we've already taken it down before it spread widely."
Byakuya took the paper and read it.
Slowly, his face turned to dark, and he felt as if something sharp stabbed his heart when he saw Rukia and her picture placed side by side.
"What the…" Byakuya's jaw tightened and his hand gripped that paper roughly.
"Are you alright?"
"It's bullshit!" Byakuya snarled as he threw the paper away. He could feel his heart pounded violently in his chest after reading that trash news.
"Actually, if you didn't tell me who the girl is, I certainly would believe the contents in this news. It indeed surprised me because they really look-alike." Yoruichi said, ignoring a death glare from Byakuya.
Yoruichi was aware, the topic about her was still considering taboo. But, Byakuya needed to stop avoiding it because soon or later people would start to talk about it, notably because his fiancée really looked similar with his past lover, which Yoruichi could not decide whether it was a luck or curse for Fukuda Rukia.
"I know Miss Fukuda is not her. But, it's a different story for the reporters. Even though only a few people who knew about your past relationship and media could not prove it until now, but I'm sure one of them will bring this topic in their news. Because of that I hope you can control your emotion, especially in the press conference this afternoon."
Byakuya did not answer. Albeit he was back to his stoic demeanor, but behind his cold mask, he still filled with mixed emotion. An invisible vein pulsated in his temple as he stared at the image in the paper.
Five years has been passed, but he still found it was difficult to forget her. In fact, he doubted he ever can. She was the most important person in his life. No matter how hard he tried to forget, to bury the memories of her, but it always stay inside, because it was already graven in his heart. The only thing he could do is covering it, making sure no one could see the hollow in him, so they could stop intrude his life, but mostly to protect her from them. It was the last promise he made for her.
Everything goes well, that's what he thought until his grandfather suddenly brought Rukia in his life. Her presence made those memories came back. Even though he managed to lock it, but it always found a way to slip out.
He knew the risk that being together with Rukia would open the old wounds. Nonetheless, he has chosen to live this marriage with her, even it only a fake, but the decision has made.
"Is it Urahara Kisuke who made this article?" Byakuya asked straight to the point.
"Yes, he is. And it seemed he will come to the press conference too."
"I have to go now," Byakuya got up from the seat.
"Wait," Yoruichi stopped him. "Have you told Miss Fukuda about her?"
Byakuya stopped as he was in front of the door. A heavy silent filled the atmosphere.
"No," he answered coldly. He reached his hand to open the door.
"But, it's not fair for her."
"She doesn't need to know." Byakuya said as he walked outside. "My life is not her concern."
It was the last words before the door closed.
"Kuchiki sama." Zakura greeted as Byakuya came out of the room.
"What's our next schedule?" Byakuya asked while kept walking to the elevator.
"There is a meeting, the last one with the producer about the new movie."
Byakuya nodded. He stopped as he was in front of the elevator. There was a soft sound from it before the door began to open. Byakuya's eyes slightly narrowed as he saw who was inside.
"Well, well. Look, who's coming. Our new groom."
"Shiba Kaien," Byakuya said tonelessly. From many people in this agency building, he was the last one that Byakuya wanted to meet in this situation. It did not mean Byakuya dislike him, it's just his attitude that made him want to stay away from this man. But, there he was, looking at him with a big grin on his face.
Kaien rolled his eyes as he walked outside the elevator, followed by Miyako, his manager.
"What should I do to make you stop call me by my full name, Kuchiki Byakuya?" he teased playfully, knowing it would make an impact to his mood. His grin grew wider as he found Byakuya stared at him fiercely.
Byakuya and Kaien entered the company almost in the same time. But, it was Byakuya first, who entered as an actor, and then followed by Kaien several months later, who entered as a musician. Both of them had different personalities where Byakuya was a stoic and indifferent person, while Kaien more out spoken and has down to earth attitude, the kind of demeanor that sometimes bothered Byakuya's a lot, especially in their training days. Even, it continued until now.
"Anyway, congrats for your engagement, Kuchiki. You indeed surprised me this time." Another grin tugged on his lips.
"So, who's the lucky girl?"
"I believe you've already know about my fiancée." Byakuya's said nonchalantly. "The news and her pictures were all over the media."
"You know I don't like reading that kind of magazines. Besides, I want to hear about her from you directly."
Byakuya did not give any answer. He kept his fierce glare toward Kaien.
"Shiba san, Miyako san," Zakura tried to break the tension that surrounding his master by greeting Kaien and Miyako.
"Ah, Zakura san," Miyako smiled at him.
"I heard the new album was already sold out in the first day. Congratulation, I hope it will be as success as the previous one."
"Thank you, Zakura san." She said as she smiled. Then she turned to Byakuya. "Congratulation with your engagement, Kuchiki sama." She said softly.
"I'm sorry, we can't stay long here because Shihoin shachou want to talk about the promotion for the new album," she said as she bowed.
"Shiba," Miyako called him.
"See you around, Kuchiki. Oh, I'll give you the copy of my new album complete with my sign as the wedding gift," he said playfully before following Miyako.
"Save that for your fans, Shiba Kaien. I believe they will appreciate it more than me," Byakuya said coldly as he entered the elevator.
Kaien rolled his eyes. "I know, but you can keep the album and give it to your fiancée, Kuchiki. I believe he will love it." He said as he winked.
"In your dream." Byakuya muttered before the elevator door closed.

"What? It's already sold out?"
Rukia could not hide her disappointment as the shopkeeper nodded her head.
"I'm really sorry, Miss. But, we ran out of the stock since yesterday. It was the biggest sale that ever happened in our store. Can't you believe it? In only one hour all the albums has already sold out. The enthusiasm of his fans were so big. Even before we opening this store, they had gathered in front of it." The shopkeeper explained excitedly.
"I heard even Tower Records also ran out of the stock."
"Really?" Rukia's eyes grew wider. Tower Records was the largest record store in Japan. If it also ran out of the stock, it meant her chance to get the new album is almost zero.
"When will the new stocks arrive?"
"We still don't know, Miss. Because it's really a rare occasion. So, perhaps it will take more time."
Rukia sighed. She has waited the new album from Kaien Shiba since his agency announced he would release it in the beginning of winter. Even she has saved her money little by little to buy it once the album came out. But, because a lot of things happened to her yesterday, she lost the opportunity to get it. Sure, she could buy the song digitally, but the feeling was different when you bought the physical one.
"It's really a great album. And you know his musicality got a lot of praises from critics. I believe it will top Oricon album chart."
Though Rukia still felt disappointed, but she could not help but smile when she heard that shopkeeper's words.
"I know he can do that," She said while staring at the album poster that pinned on the wall. She let her eyes lingered on his images for a moment before taking a deep breath and blew it out, hoping it could shoo this gloom feeling out of her. Then turned and bowed to the shop keeper. "Thank you for the information." She said before walking toward the door.
The cool breeze welcomed her as soon as she was outside the store. Rukia pursed her jacket and arranged her scarf, before heading to her bicycle in the parking lot.
If you like Chappy, answer this phone~
Rukia stopped in front of the bicycle. She opened her bag and took her cell phone. Her expression turned to gloomy when she saw the name on the screen. "Tsk, the source of all the problems," she grunted.
"Hello, Rukia's speaking." She said while pinning the phone between her left ear and shoulder as she unlocked the bicycle.
"Where are you?" Byakuya cold voice echoed in her head.
"I'm on my way to the station."
"Good. Once you've arrived Zakura will pick you up and escort you here."
"Okay, I—"
The call disconnected.
"This man…" Rukia snarled as she threw a glare to her cell phone. But, then Rukia realized she should not waste the energy to be angry at him. She should save it because she will need it to face the reporters today.
Focus, Rukia. Focus.
Rukia took another deep breath before driving her bicycle to the station.

One hour later, Rukia has arrived in Shihoin agency. As she entered the office, Rukia could not hide her disappointment because this building was not like what she had thought before. In her mind, she imagined a unique building with a lot of artist or singer pictures pinned on the colorful wall inside. However, as she was inside, she could not find any of it. The entire building looked dull in her eyes. No pictures, unique design or colorful wall.
"Huh? It's really look like ordinary office. Where's the other artist?" Rukia mumbled as she passed the lobby.
Zakura, who walked beside her, smiled slightly as he heard Rukia's question. "Though Shihoin agency is one of the biggest agencies in Japan, but actually we only have a few artists, and many of them are working now. So, that's why you barely see them here."
"Ah, I see."
"This way, Miss Fukuda." Zakura said while showing the direction. Rukia nodded and followed him. They kept walking to a small room that located near the end of the hallway.
When Rukia had entered the room, she noticed there was a woman who was waiting for her inside, and just like in Midtown tower she was there to prepare Rukia's appearance.
"Do I need to do this?" Rukia turned to Zakura.
"Yes, Miss Fukuda. That's what Kuchiki sama ordered once you get here."
Rukia let out a sigh. "So, where is he?" She asked, while taking a seat, so the stylist could start the makeover.
"Kuchiki sama is still in the meeting with Shihoin shachou about this press conference."
"Hn…" Rukia could only gave him a soft mumble as the answer because that woman started to put something on her face. Rukia closed her eyes, while hoping this process would end up soon.
Thirty minutes later, Rukia stood in front of the mirror, examining her reflection in it. Even though she disliked this makeover case, but once again she felt amaze with the result because it really looked natural on her face. It even could cover the dark circles under her eyes.
"Thank you," Rukia said to that woman before she went out the room.
"You're really beautiful, Miss Fukuda."
Rukia's face flushed as she heard Zakura's compliment. "I'm not that beautiful, Zakura san." Rukia answered awkwardly.
"Yes, you are, Miss Fukuda. You have to be more confident with yourself."
Zakura kept his gaze on Rukia for a moment. She looks very similar to her, he thought.
When the first time he met Rukia in the Midtown tower, he could not hide his surprise to this similarity, and he almost worry it would affect Byakuya's emotion. Nonetheless, it seemed his master could handle it smoothly. But, he hoped…
"Have we met before?"
Rukia's voice snapped Zakura from his reverie.
"Pardon?"
"I said have we met before? Because your face looks familiar and…" Rukia paused. Her brows furrowed as she tried to dig deeper inside her memories.
"Ah!" Rukia clapped her hand. "I remember now! You're the person who had lent me a handkerchief."
Zakura looked at her for a moment. "I… remember it too." He said as he nodded. "You're that brave girl."
"What a coincidence!" Rukia shouted excitedly. She never thought she could meet him again. Even though she had bad experience that day, but she never forgot how nice actually he was by lending her his handkerchief. However, her smile faded as another memory crossed her mind.
"Wait a minute… don't say the rude man in that car is Kuchiki Byakuya."
Zakura nodded.
"Tsk, no wonder his arrogant attitude felt familiar." Rukia grunted as she shook her head.
Zakura could not help but laugh at Rukia's statement.
"You're really interesting person, Miss Fukuda." He said as he studied her. And then, after some moments, with a meaningful smile tugged on his lips, Zakura added his remark.
"I think my master will be alright from now."
When Zakura observed Rukia some moments ago, he noticed it. Even though she shared the same appearance with her, but they had different personality where Rukia was more lively and expressive. Zakura could not wait to see how this girl could affect Byakuya's solemn world.
"Huh? What do you mean?" Rukia asked. However, before she could get the answer, she heard the door open. Rukia glanced at it and found Byakuya was standing in front of the door.
"Kuchiki sama." Zakura said as he bowed.
"Can you check the preparation in the conference room?" Byakuya asked.
"Hai, my lord."
After they were alone, Byakuya turned his attention to Rukia.
"There is something that I want to tell you,"
"Yes?"
"I know we've already discussed about it last night, but in this press conference, I wish you're not making any trouble."
"Hey, I'm not—"
"I know," Byakuya cut. "That's why, I asked you to not say any words that can ruin this press conference."
"Let me handle the conversation. I'll make sure none of their questions will cross the line." He added.
Rukia thought about Byakuya's words for a minute, before nodding her head. "Alright." She agreed.
"Pardon me, Kuchiki sama. The preparation are complete." Zakura's voice came from the outside.
"Follow me." Byakuya gestured Rukia to follow him.
As they arrived in front of the conference room, Rukia felt the sense of nervousness started to creep inside her.
"Are you alright?"
Rukia nodded. "I guess so. I just felt a little bit nervous." She took a deep breath to calm her mind.
Byakuya examined her intensely. She did not look alright in his eyes. Her face slowly turned to pale, and her hands trembled, even though she has tried to hide it by curled her hands into a small fist.
Byakuya took one step closer, and for Rukia's surprise he took her right hand and held it.
Rukia's eyes grew wider. She never thought Byakuya would do something like this.
Did… did he hold her hand to calm her feeling? However, before Rukia could ask him the reason behind his action, the door in front of them started to open.
"Let's go," Byakuya said before walking into the room.
As soon as they entered the room, thousand flashes and loud noises from the reporters welcoming them, showering their eyes and ears with its terrifying light and their questions. But, unlike that time, Rukia was not as frightened as before. Instead, she felt something foreign, but delightful started to build inside her and began to spread throughout her body, washing her nervousness away. And it's all coming from his hand that kept holding hers along their journey to the stage.
Rukia remained silence as she sat next to Byakuya on the stage, facing the reporters. However, she noticed Byakuya still held her hand, even though they had already passed the crowd. This, once again, sent another warm sensation all over her body. But, Rukia tried to not recall about it further because the press conference already started, and she should focus on it.
"Thank you for coming in this press conference." Zakura's voice echoed in the room.
"As we promised, we hold the press conference to give explanation about Kuchiki Byakuya's wedding plans."
The voices came back. Everyone struggled to dig the information about this wedding.
From the corner of her eyes, Rukia examined the way Byakuya responded to reporter's questions. His expression remained calm, and his tone sounded firm when he gave the answer. He really looked professional. Rukia thought.
It seemed everyone in this room looked surprise when Byakuya told them about the date of their wedding and the reason behind this marriage arrangement. The questions instantly increased, and most of them were curious about the reason behind Ginrei's decision and Byakuya's feeling about this arrangement.
"There is one thing that keeps bugging me, Kuchiki san. What makes someone like you agree to get marry? Did you accept this marriage arrangement because of her face?"
Rukia blinked.
What kind of question was that?
Rukia turned her gaze to the reporter that shouted the question.
Few meters behind, Rukia saw a tall man stood near the door. He has light-blond hair that looked a bit messy with strands framed the sides of his face and hung between his eyes. His entire appearance looked casual with a black shirt and dark jins. And Rukia noticed his gray eyes shone playfully as he stared at Byakuya.
Meanwhile, Byakuya could not hide his annoyance when he saw Urahara Kisuke stood among those reporters.
Byakuya stared at him coldly. Sure, he had already predicted Urahara would come and asked that question directly, but it kept bothering him because he knew this man could ruin all his plans if he made the wrong move.
"No." Byakuya answered shortly. "There's nothing to do with her appearance." He released his hand of Rukia's and placed it around her shoulder.
Rukia blinked. Though Byakuya's voice and expression remained calm, but she felt something has changed within him.
"For me, she's the one." He said before caught her lips, ignoring a small gasp from Rukia because he suddenly kissed her. But, Byakuya did not care. He needed to do this before Urahara did something that could undermine this press conference.
Besides, this kiss was the rule that they had agreed, and no matter she liked it or not, she has to get used to it.
The shouts and applause filled the room as Byakuya finally released Rukia whose face already turned to red due to his action.
"I think it's enough for now. Thank you for attending this press conference." Byakuya said before taking Rukia's hand and led her to go out of this room.
Rukia followed Byakuya in silent. Everything felt blurry inside her head due to his action in the last minutes before they ended the press conference.
What happened to him?
His strange behavior occurred after one of the reporters asked him about did her face became the reason why he wanted to marry her.
Her face…
It was not the first time she heard someone talked about 'her face' in front of her. Yesterday, she still remembered Okuni said the same thing about it.
There was only one thing that came into her mind when someone talked about her face. How it looked very similar with someone.
Rukia bit her lower lips as she remembered the conversation between her and Keigo few days ago.
"Well, few years ago there was a rumor that spread among us, Hisana's fan. The rumor said Hisana and Byakuya were in a secret relationship. Though until now it has not been proven because Hisana moved to Europe alone after the accident five years ago, still, I dislike that man because of that."
Was… was the gossip true?
Rukia stopped abruptly as they had reached Byakuya's car in the parking lot.
"What are you doing?"
"Are you in a secret relationship with someone?"
That question came out her lips even before Rukia could stop it. But, she needed to know, the reason behind his strange action. Because she never saw him acted like this before.
"No," Byakuya answered tonelessly.
"But…"
"No buts. Get in the car."
Rukia looked hesitant for a moment, but then slowly she entered the car.
There was something wrong. She knew that.
Kuchiki Byakuya… what exactly did you hide from me?
A/N:
Huff. I know, it's really long chapter, but I hope you enjoyed it :)
Many things happened in this chapter, Rukia met Kuchiki's family, they finally set the rules, and the wedding's coming :)
Ah, did everyone hoped something happened between them when Byakuya forced Rukia to stay in his apartment? Haha. I'm sorry because nothing's happened, not yet, because you know, save the best scene for the best moment ;)
At least Rukia get another kiss in the last scene :3
Though, I know, probably it was not the expected mind blowing kiss, because they still followed the rules, but who knows what will happened to them when they decided to break it xD
Anyway, I'm sorry for the oocness in this chapter, especially in Byakuya's scene, not only because it's ooc, but because he thought about Hisana a lot :) *I have a feeling I will get hate because of that* :3
But, I think it will important for the story, to know the cause why he become cold and why he could not be with Hisana. However, don't worry, it's ByaRuki's story, so please don't kill me :3
