The children at the school got the next day off to recover, mentally and physically. Violet took the opportunity to do some research. She got on her computer and started work.

Her browser history was flooded with odd keywords.

Batman

Dark Knight

Vigilante

Robin

Nightwing

Batwoman

Bat

Hero

She printed off articles, photos, and interviews and pinned them up on a bulletin board in her room. Getting captured had only fueled her fascination with Gotham's dark superheroes. Violet discovered several things, many adventures, and how the Gotham Police sometimes worked with Batman. She wondered who the Batman could be in real life. Did he have a real life? Was he just Batman? But he had to have a normal life outside of the suit, right?

She didn't know.

And her curiosity wouldn't let her forget it.

~The dreams that I'm dreaming~

Violet came to a decision mere months later.

It was most likely a ridiculous decision. But it was a decision nonetheless. She went out and bought material. Lots of it. Blacks and greys. She got rubber. She got all different sorts of things, throwing them together. She spent a lot of time in her room, sewing things together, making things, until she had fashioned a costume.

One reminiscent of Batgirl, but not quite. She knew it wasn't as good, but she was certain she'd improve. She was going to help. She was going to do something important.

She had a plan. A schedule. And she was going to drive through to completion. Violet Jones was going to be a vigilante. All she needed was a name.

Batgirl and Batwoman were already taken.

She needed something new, and fresh, and untaken. Maybe it didn't have to do with bats.

Dark Angel

That was it. That was the name she'd been looking for.

She molded a pair of angel wings and placed it into the empty circle on her chest. She grinned.

Dark Angel.

~The Dark Knight~

She sneaked out of the house after dark, after her parents went to sleep. She sat on the roof, staring intently out over the city.

She sighed heavily. "This is more boring than one would think."

"I know, right?!"

Violet fell backward, scrambling to her feet, bringing her fists up. "Who's there?"

"Relax, okay?" A young woman in a dark suit stepped forward. She had red hair, and her suit was black and purple. "Hi, I'm Batgirl. Who are you?"

"Dark Angel," Violet said shakily.

"Cool name." Batgirl nodded. "More imaginative than Batgirl, anyway."

"I've wanted to meet you for a while," Violet admitted.

"Thanks!" Batgirl smiled. "What are you doing out here, fellow vigilante?"

"Well…." Violet shrugged helplessly. "This is my first time?"

"Amateur vigilante. I see." Batgirl nodded sympathetically. "Little piece of advice: Stick close to me tonight, okay? I'll see what I can do for you."

Violet's eyes widened. "Really?"

"Yep."

"Thank you so much!"

"No problem, Angel."
