Chapter 8: Everything's Relative
Only been a few hours since the tournament started, and things are still getting good. But on the inside, not really. Inside Pegasus' castle, somewhere around the corner, a tall tower stands. A rope of a blanket comes out of the window, and coming out if it was a masked boy. It appears he is escaping the castle. As he tightens the clothe up, the boy climbs down to the ground. On the way, he reaches at the end of the rope and sees that he was still far from the ground. His situation wasn't looking good for him. But it was about to get worse when the clothe starts to loosen and it lost its grip and the kid falls to the ground. Luckily, his fall broke when he landed on a few bushes. He gets out and quickly makes a run for it. Meanwhile, a man in suit pushes a cargo full of food and goes into into a room.
"All right, you little runt. Here's your daily grub," the man said, but only to see clothe rope hanging near the bed, "Oh, no! He's gone!"
At the dining room...
In the room, around the walls are to frames of an Egyptian man and a beautiful blonde-haired woman. And at the dining table sits the laughing Pegasus reading his comic book of a rabbit beating up an alligator. He drinks his wine while reading as well.
"Where do all these guys these get all their ideas?" Pegasus asked himself before continuing reading and chuckling.
"Uh, Master Pegasus?" the man called.
"Hm?"
"A thousand pardons, sir."
"Gorgonzola cheese and the world's finest fruit juice along with a copy of my favorite comic book," Pegasus ordered. "Times like this are more precious to me than any other. You do realize that, don't you?"
"But the prisoner has escaped."
"Which one?"
"The boy we imprisoned in the north tower. I have our men searching the island, but so far there's no sign of him."
"Ooh! I guess he didn't appreciate my hospitality. Well, no matter, I'm pretty sure I know where our little escapee is heading. He'll seek out Eddy," Pegasus concluded as he pressed a remote. "Computer, request data of the status of the Duel Monsters Tournament."
A very thin computer screen is shown in the middle of the room, along with a picture of the whole island of Duelist Kingdom.
*Six hours have passed since the the dueling contest began.*
Then the screen shows four pictures of the Dueling Stage with various Duelists.
*Twelve of the participants have been eliminated. Those that were defeated and lost their star chips are being removed from the island by boat.*
"And what of Eddy Anderson?" Pegasus asked.
*Eddy Anderson now has to gain five star chips to enter the castle.*
"Excellent. I expected no less from him. He is determined to work his way up in the standings in order to gain entry to my castle," Pegasus stated. "Which is exactly what I want little Eddy to do. We'll just keep our spy cams trained on our star Duelist. Sooner or later, the little runaway prisoner will confront Eddy for reasons of his own."
The man had a small smirk, "Hmph. Very wise, sir."
"Actually, the boy's escape falls right into my plans. And I do have such plans in store for Eddy. Plans that I hope he'll find entertaining as I do."
Pegasus then started to laugh evilly of his plans going perfectly. Meanwhile, with the gang, Eddy and his friends are walking down a small path in the forest. They're talking about of Eddy's recent win.
"Wow, Eddy. I can't believe you've already won five star chips," Clarissa said.
"Pretty soon, you'll get the ten star chips you'll need to enter the castle and rescue your grandfather," Edd stated.
"I wish I more star chips," Ed said. "Eddy's doing better than me."
"Hey, don't worry about it, Lumpy. You're doing fine," Eddy replied. "You'll be able to help out your sister soon."
"I sure hope so," Ed looks back a seeing Sarah's actual smile. "This is the first time she's actually counting on me. And this time, I won't let her down."
Then a cry for help is shouted from far and the gang hears it clearly in alert.
"What was that?" Ed asked.
"That's someone crying for help," Eddy proclaimed.
The gang then runs to the cries to find where it's coming from. As it turns out, it was the same man in suit with the odd haircut holding a Duelist and dragging him away.
"Ah, let go! Somebody help me!" the Duelist shouted.
The group catches up to the shouts and see him.
"There he is!" Eddy pointed.
Ed runs to the bodyguard, "Hang on, kid! I'll save you!"
The man turns around as the Duelist still shouts, "Help, you gotta help me!"
"You let him go, you big jerk!"
The bodyguard lets go of the kid and Ed grabs him by the arm and throws him over.
"Heh, not too bad," Ed smirked.
Then the bodyguard lands on his feet, charges at Ed, and before Ed could even try to counter, the man punches him right in the gut, making him go to his knees and fall.
"Never mind," Ed groaned.
However, the Duelist tries to run away, but the guard catches him by the arms and holds him up.
"Hey, put me down!"
"Quit squirming, you little brat." the man said.
"Hey, needle-head! You heard him!" Eddy called. "Put the kid down already!"
"What in the world do you think you're doing?" Edd demanded.
"This is none of your business. This duelist lost his star chips," the bodyguard answered. "And the rules say he's to be kicked off the island."
"But I didn't lose my chips in a Duel, they were stolen from me. My cards too!" the Duelist said.
"I don't care what lame excuse you have, kid. You need star chips to duel and you haven't got any. So you're shipping out of here. Those are the rules; those are my orders from Pegasus himself."
Ed gets up, still tendering his stomach, "Ow, that big jerk."
"Are you all right, Ed?" Edd asked.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Could be worse."
"Hey, I say we follow that smug jerk and find out what's really going on here," Eddy said. "Something about this I just don't find right at all."
Later, at the edge of the island...
Far at the docks, the bodyguard shows up with the same kid that lost his star chips.
"Hey, Kemo! What'd you catch?" another man in suit asked.
"Just another loser," Kemo answered before throwing the kid on the boat.
Unfortunately, the Duelist was next to Weevil Underwood.
"Hey, buzz off!" Weevil pushed him. "They may be shipping me out, but I'm still Weevil Underwood— bug duelist extraordinaire!"
The Duelist sighed, "But I didn't even get a chance to duel."
Then a yell far from the boat is heard as the kid turns to see Eddy and the rest of the gang running to the boat.
"Hey, you!" Eddy called.
"You again?" Kemo questioned.
"What did the guy stole your star chips looked like?" Eddy asked the Duelist.
"Well, I couldn't see his face," the Duelist answered. "It was covered with a bandana, but he was a little guy and he challenged me in the meadow."
"He challenged you to a Duel Monsters game?"
"Yeah, and as soon as I put my star chips and my deck down, he snatched them up and ran off."
"You shouldn't be kicked off the island with that. We'll get you're star chips back, kid."
"This boat ships off in exactly thirty minutes," Kemo stated. "Anyone without a star chip leaves the island."
"Then we'll get his chips back by then," Clarissa said.
"We won't let him bully anyone out of the game," Ed stated.
"Nope, we'll catch that thief and bring him to justice," Eddy stated. "Believe me, kid, you can count on us to catch that punk and get your star chips back."
"But who are you guys?" the Duelist asked.
"We're the guys that are gonna save your chips."
"And don't worry, you got the brilliant mind of Ed Robertson, and I always get my man!" Ed confidently said, making his friends have an anime sweat-drop. "Even if he's just a kid. Onward, Friends of Justice!"
Ed then marches back to the island as Eddy, Edd, and Clarissa followed him. Later, they arrive near a dueling stadium as they wait for the kid to arrive.
"So, what's your brilliant mind telling you now, Sherlock?" Eddy sarcastically asked.
"Uh, not sure," Ed answered.
"Well, I'm not surprised."
"Hey, come on! I can make up a brilliant idea if I want to."
"Oh, really? Then what about the time you had a 'brilliant scam' of your own, when really it was a way to summon Evil Tim?"
"Oh, yeah. I remember. Ah, the memories..."
"Evil Tim?" Clarissa questioned.
"It's a long story, Clarissa," Edd said.
However, hiding in the bushes was the culprit that stole the star chips of the duelist from earlier as he looks at the gang, waiting for him to show up. With a shout, the culprit jumps out of the bushes and reveals himself to the gang and they see him.
"I finally found you at last, Eddy Anderson!" the culprit said.
The gang, except for Eddy, stands ready and Edd shouts, "That must be the culprit we're looking for!"
"I can take this kid!" Ed proclaimed.
"I hope so, you're twice his size," Clarissa said.
"Just try me, you big mono-browed dork!" the thief stated.
"Bring it then, and hand over the star chips you've stolen!" Ed ordered.
"Hang on, Ed," Eddy stopped him. "I think I know what he's after. He's wants to duel."
"What?" Edd and Ed questioned.
Eddy turns to the masked thief, "That's what you want, right, kid? You want to duel me?"
"Oh, you better believe it, dorky," the thief answered.
Later, both Eddy and the thief enter the dueling pods with Anderson on the blue pod and the thief on the red pod. However, the Eds were wondering why Eddy is doing this.
"I don't get it, Double D. Why is it that Eddy's wasting his time with this thief when we can just take back the star chips away from him?" Ed asked.
"I'm not sure, Ed," Edd answered. "But I'm not even sure if Eddy knows what he's doing against the thief."
Then Eddy's puzzle started to glow as he goes through another change again.
"Yu-Gi-Oh!"
The glow disappears and shows Eddy as Yami again as his sharp eyes were closed and opens them. The thief noticed the change in Eddy.
"Now, how many star chips will you wager?" Yami Eddy asked.
"To wipe you out, five!" the thief answered.
"Then five it is, but only because I think I know why you're doing this."
"Well, I don't care what you think, Eddy," the thief replied as he took out the five stolen star chips, "because I'm think you're gonna lose!"
Eddy's forehead then glows with the Eye of Wdjat. His friends still question of Eddy's dueling skills.
"What does Eddy see that we don't?" Clarissa asked. "It's like as if he's looking into another person's soul."
"Well, whatever it is, Eddy should probably hurry up if he wants to win those star chips back to the boat in time."
"Don't worry, Ed," Edd told him. "Once Eddy wins this, we'll be back at the docks with time to spare."
"Duel!" Yami and the thief shouted.

The Thief's LP: 2000
'This is it, Eddy. Now you're gonna pay for what you did to my big brother.' the thief thought.
Flashback...
At the tall building of Smith Corporations, Kevin sits in his office looking through his cards as his little brother reminds him of the boat leaving for Duelist Kingdom.
"Kevin, you gotta leave now if you're gonna make the boat for the big tournament at Duelist Kingdom. Kevin, open the door!" the little brother said. However, he opens the door to see his brother going through his cards, "Kevin?"
"I'm not going, Michael." Kevin answered.
"Not going? Why not?"
Kevin threw his cards on the table, "There's no point!"
"What do you mean, 'no point'?"
"Kid, I am in no condition to duel anyone."
"What are you talking about? You always say cards are power, and you've got all the strongest cards!"
"Since I lost my duel with Eddy, I don't know what I think anymore. Everything's different, it feels as if I lost a piece of myself that day."
"But Kevin, you're the best. You're the champ!"
Kevin stood up from his chair and took a Duel Monsters card out, "Not since the day I was defeated by Eddy. Here, Michael," then he threw the card at Michael and he catches it. "I'm going away for a while. I don't know how long I'll be gone. Keep that; it was always your favorite."
"Why? Why are you leaving?"
"Because I don't know who I am anymore," Kevin has his suitcase ready and leaves his office. "Take care, little brother."
"Kevin, don't go!" but Kevin already closed the door behind him, leaving Michael to himself in his brother's office.
Flashback end...
'You broke up my family, Eddy, and now I'm gonna break you up.' the thief, now known as Michael, thought.
"My first card is the Man-Eating Plant!" Michael declared as a ferocious Flytrap monster with thorns around its body and whips appeared on the field.
Yami drew his card, "Now it's my turn. I'll fight back at your plant with the Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress!"
The blue dragon appears on the field with a roar.
Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress [ATK: 1400/DEF: 1200]
"Hmph. Like that wimpy dragon's gonna save you, dorky!" Michael scoffed. "Man-Eating Plant, destroy it!"
However, Yami quickly counters, "Winged Dragon, Fireball attack!"
The dragon bursts out a large fireball the plant and it gets destroyed as Michael covered his eyes from the blast.
Michael's LP: 1400
"What? My monster lost?" Michael questioned.
"You can't win a duel with cards that don't rightfully belong to you," Yami stated. "How can your heart ever live in cards that belong to someone else?"
"Shut up, dorky. I don't believe in that 'Heart of the Cards' crap you keep preaching about. Cards have nothing to with heart; it's all about power."
The Eye of Wdjat appears on Eddy's forehead as Yami figures out who the thief really is.
"Yes, this is him all right," the eye disappears. "I sensed a connection to Kevin; you're his brother, Michael Smith."
"What?! How did you...?" Michael pulls down his bandana from his face, revealing his identity. "Well, it doesn't matter anyway."
"Hey, that is Kevin's little brother!" Clarissa said.
"That's right, Kevin Smith is my brother and he's the best duelist that there ever was," Michael stated. "Now thanks to you, Eddy, he's gone, and Pegasus is trying to take over Smith Corporations."
"Pegasus wants Smith Corporations?" Yami inquired, shocked.
"I don't know what you did to my big brother when you dueled him, Eddy, but ever since that defeat, he hasn't been the same. He ran away because of you, and with him gone, Pegasus moved right in. Some Smith Corporations executives invited him in for a secret board meeting."
Flashback...
In a dark room, Pegasus sits in the middle as there were five executives of the company at the table. Outside of the room, Michael could hear everything they're saying with the door opened a little bit.
"Now gentlemen, let's see if I understand your proposition: Kevin Smith has abandoned his corporate station, and now you five wish to seize control of Smith Corporations. You then want to merge with my company and you'd like for me to handle any messy details, yes?" Pegasus stated.
"Precisely, Mr. Pegasus," the first executive answered. "With our money and your leadership, we can easily take over Smith Corporations."
"Do tell."
"For our plan to succeed, Kevin must be taken out of the picture... permanently," the second executive explained.
"However, there is a catch," the third executive said. "Passed by the corporate bylaws, only a Smith family member can legally control Smith Corporations."
"To that end, Pegasus, we recommend that you kidnap Kevin's little brother, Michael, in name that you control Smith Corporations, but we will control him," the fourth executive stated.
"Do these things for us and we will lay all of Smith Corporations' technology at your feet," the fifth executive said.
"Agreed. The elder Smith shall meet with an tragic accident and the younger Smith will captured," Pegasus replied.
"Excellent. But we have one finally condition," the first executive said.
"The brat who beat Kevin has tarnished Smith Corporations' good name, and we must insist that you restore it," the second executive stated.
"Well, how fortuitous! Plans for me to duel Eddy are already on their way," Pegasus implied as he already knows Michael is watching over them and the boy sensed it. "Now, to show that I truly am the man for this job. Kemo, bring me young Smith, would you?"
Before Michael could try and get away, Kemo already catches him and brings him inside the room. However, Michael shouts to be let go and that when his brother gets back, Pegasus and the executives are going to be in trouble.
"You see, gentlemen? This is how officiant you can expect from me to handle our business," Pegasus stated. "Young Smith is captured, Eddy will be defeated, and Kevin Smith will bother us no more... after his tragic death. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!"
Flashback end...
Michael tightens his fist in anger from remembering that day.
"It's all your fault! Kevin deserted me because of you!" Michael implied.
"You don't understand. Michael, your brother hasn't deserted you; he's searching for himself," Yami stated.
"Shut up!" Michael shouted as he drew a card from his hand. "Tell it to my monster!" Michael plays the card and a large man-like crocodile appears on the field. "Go, Crocodileous!"
The crocodile monster charges at the dragon, but the Winged Dragon counters with another Fireball attack. Michael's monster was then destroyed and Michael lost some amount of Life Points.
Michael's LP: 1100
"Battling me won't bring your brother back, and we want to stop Pegasus as much as you do. He's taken my grandfather prisoner."
"He's right!" Ed defended. "Pegasus is the real crook here. Can't you see that, Michael?"
"You're wrong. I have to protect my brother's company and Eddy's the one Pegasus has to beat in order to take it over," Michael stated.
Clarissa thinks of all what's happening here between the battle and finally figures it out.
"Wait, I get it. Michael is trying to save his brother's company by defeating Eddy in a duel, so Pegasus doesn't get to face Eddy at all!" Clarissa stated.
"What do you mean, Clarissa?" Edd asked.
"If Michael could keep Pegasus from beating Eddy, then he won't be able to take over Kevin's company."
"That must be it!" Yami concluded before facing Michael, but he wasn't there. "Huh? Hey, where did he go?"
"If I can't beat you..." Michael shouted from behind while swiping Eddy's two star chips. "...I'll have you disqualified!"
"My star chips!" Yami said when he almost grabbed Michael by the bandana, but he got away.
Edd, Ed, and Clarissa then chases after him to get the star chips back.
"Michael, listen to me! You'll never save Smith Corporation that way!" Yami implied from the pod.
Michael stops at his steps and turns to Yami as the rest of the gang stops.
"Your brother is just confused. After I defeated Kevin in our duel, I opened his mind," Yami explained. "I removed from him all the dark influences that clouded his thoughts and actions. Free of that evil essence, Kevin is struggling. Now, your brother realizes that his way wasn't the right way and he's searching his heart for answers. And in your heart, what you're doing isn't the right way either."
"But then... What can I do?" Michael asked in desperation.
"You can start by trusting in me, and together, we will defeat Pegasus." Michael nodded before Yami continued, "I promise you, we can only bring Pegasus down if we stick together. We'll help you protect your brother, Michael, but you got to help us, okay? You've got to go back and return those cards and star chips to the Duelist you stole them from."
"You're right, Eddy. Then we'll take on Pegasus together."
"We've only got three minutes left until the boat leaves," Clarissa reminded.
"Let's get going, Michael." Yami said.
Michael nods and Yami soon steps down from the pod. The gang then runs their way to the docks as fast as they can. Somewhere far at a local house near a river, inside it was Kevin Smith as he kept in hiding and is working on some kind of a dueling object while with computers. He still thinks of what happened in his duel against Eddy and how he tries to figure out how he could have lost. He remembers that he was dominating the match with his three Blue-Eyes White Dragons and was on the verge of winning, but Eddy wouldn't give up. And against all odds with him, and because of his faith in his grandfather's cards, he was able to summon the one monster that would help him win: Exodia.
'I've always believed Duel Monsters was a game of sheer power, but Eddy claims that the cards have a heart.' Kevin thought. 'Unbelievable... a greedy little punk like him actually claimed that cards have a heart when he didn't have any for his friends or any of the kids of the Cul-de-Sac...'
Outside of the house, two men in suits stand as they know Kevin is inside and they hold Glocks in their hands to eliminate him.
'It sounds crazy, though. But Eddy could be right? Is there really a heart of the cards that can effect the outcome of a duel? Is that how he won? The only way I'll know for sure is to face Eddy again, and these new portable generators will enable me to challenge him no matter where I find him. If I could just get to...'
Kevin's thoughts were interrupted when a loud knock on the door came from behind.
"Kevin Smith! We know you're in there! Open the door or we'll break it down!" the hitman shouted.
Kevin already puts away the dueling prototypes in his suitcase and closes it before the goons kicked the door open.
"Let's go, kid! On your feet!" the first hitman ordered while pointing the gun at him.
"Mr. Pegasus would like to have a few words with ya." the second hitman implied.
Kevin calmly smirks and stands from his chair, "Heh, I bet he would. But it'll take more than you two dorks to kill me."
"This can go easy, or we could just pull the trigger and take you out, wise guy."
Kevin, with quick thought, kicks the chair right at them, "You'll never take me alive!"
The chair hits the goons and sends them down. Kevin quickly grabs the suitcase and one of the hitmen aims his gun and shoots at Kevin, but he shields himself with the suitcase and the bullet bounces off. Kevin steps on the table and jumps through the window. The goons go after him and look out the window, but sees he was nowhere to be found.
"He jumped. Nobody could survive a fall like that," implied the first goon.
"Looks like he did our work for us," implied the second.
"Yeah, that just leaves the rest of the job." the hitman then takes the top card and it reveals to be the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, "Pegasus was very clear, he wants the deck with the deadly Blue-Eyes White Dragon."
Back at Duelist Kingdom...
The gang still run their way back to the docks as they were close to making it. Unfortunately, they were already too late since the boat has left the island.
"What?! It can't be! We're too late!" Yami implied.
"The boat! It's already left," Michael said.
"This makes no sense! We still had time!" Edd implied.
The gang then runs their way to the docks and see Kemo standing there watching the boat leave.
"You're too late. Those losers are already on their way back home," Kemo said.
"Hey, that's not fair! It hasn't even been a half hour yet," Clarissa implied.
"Tough luck. Pegasus sets the schedule here."
Ed snarls at Kemo, "Why, I outta...!"
Michael goes to Kemo and has the star chips out, "You got to call the boat back! I've got to return that kid's star chips back to him."
However, Kemo slaps the star chips away and they fell into the water, lost forever. Unfortunately, two of those star chips were Eddy's.
"You jerk!" Ed shouted. "Two of those star chips were Eddy's!"
Michael turned to the group, "I'm so sorry, Eddy."
"Ha! You losers should really keep a tighter grip on your valuables, don't you think? Then accidents like that wouldn't happen. Now..." Kemo grabbed Michael up, "Let's go, you. Back to the cage. This little ingrate is a special guest of Mr. Maximillion Pegasus. And he's been invited to attend a special dinner in his honor back at the castle. Right, Michael?"
Michael struggles to break free, "E-Eddy!"
"Hold on!" Yami said, getting, Kemo's attention. "I still have three of my star chips left. I challenge you to a duel, and if I win, Michael comes with us."
Kemo grins, "Hmph. I don't know why you would risk your chips for this brat. But if that's how you want to waste your last star chips, then meet me back at Arena 146 in exactly four hours. You'll have your match then."
4 hours later, near Arena 146...
The gang finally arrives at the arena where Kemo told them to be at. Up ahead, they see him still holding Michael.
"Michael! You put Michael down now!" Yami demanded.
"I'll consider that after you win the duel," Kemo replied.
"You'd better after I beat you."
"I never said I would duel. There's your opponent," Kemo pointed to the red dueling pod. "He's an old friend who's dying to see you again. He's met with an unfortunate end earlier today, but he's come back just to duel you."
Standing on the stage was the very same person that Eddy Anderson has defeated, but it wasn't actually him as he carried a sinister grin upon his face and looked very, very dark. No one could believe it as they were stunned in horror because that person was...
"Kevin!" Yami said.
"Yes, Eddy... It's me, Kevin. And this time, you don't stand a ghost of a chance in hell..." the person know as Kevin replied with an evil chuckle.
