Misadventures Of Michelle And Her Friends: Children Of The Corn
Malachai's P.O.V
I had returned home to find Noah and his nephews quietly sitting in the kitchen. They were pale and looking quite sickly.
"What's wrong?" I asked, glancing them over to see if there was anything out place about their attires. After all, Ruth did a wonderful job keeping them appearing picture perfect. "Did something happen?"
At first, all I received was silence so I went around the house, looking for Ruth. I had looked high and low, carefully searching every room for the brunette I married. When I came to the conclusion that she was gone I hurried to the boys.
"Noah." I forced him to look me in the eyes, "Where is Ruth?" He looked away and refused to answer, fearing something bad had happened to her I changed my question, "Where is Michelle?"
He seemed to snap back to reality as he looked at me, "Isaac took her, he said she needed to be punish for not telling him about her predictions."
Anger swelled in me as I thanked him and hurried to the church were Isaac resided. How dare he come after her like that, sure she was suppose to tell him of her predictions but she more than likely had a reason for keeping it all to herself.
I barged into the back church doors, that way no one could see the rage on my features or in my step. I walked up to the stage and listened intently, they probably are in his office. Rushing to the room before the dressing rooms, I opened and found Ruth holding her cheek while Isaac stood before her. It looked like he was scolding her.
"Malachai." He looked up at me, not even breaking from his speech, "You must have known that she had been predicting since she came here."
I ignored him as I hurried to my wife's side, "Are you okay Ruth?"
She nodded, "I'm fine."
"Malachai!"
Glaring up at Isaac I nodded, "Of course but as you asked that I make her feel more comfortable to open up to me, I felt it was best I not push for something she was not willing to give." I lifted Ruth onto her feet.
"I will take that excuse this time," he threatened, "but from tonight and forward she must tell us of her predictions or it'll be ten lashings for her."
I felt her cringe under my arm, "Fine but she'll tell them to you under my supervision. No more dragging her from my house by herself leaving the boys in a comatose like state."
"Fair." he nodded, calming down a bit, "Now leave so I can prepare for tonight."
I nodded as well, leading Ruth out of the office to the back door. She hadn't spoke a word during our walk back to our house but I could very plainly see the pain in her pale face. "Ruth?"
She didn't speak to me for a minute but eventually she replied, "I know what you're gonna say Malachai."
"Do you?"
She nodded, "You're going to scold me for not telling you about my predictions in the first place and for getting myself into trouble when I should be stay out."
I smiled, that was somewhere along the lines of what I was going to say. "Well since you know that, you know you do have to tell me now."
She sighed, "I know."
We got back to the house, boys were waiting for their motherly figure's return. They quickly rushed to her side, asking her a million questions per second. She tried to answer them but with the constant question after question it was hard.
"Boys," I interrupted, "why don't you let Ruth and I talk for a bit then she'll make us lunch okay?"
They seemed to be hesitant to leave Ruth but she nodded, "It's okay."
They lingered a minute before heading to the backyard to play whatever game they wanted. They stayed close to the house, probably so they could eavesdrop. So to foil that plan, I had Ruth to go upstairs so we could talk in private.
"Alright Ruth." I locked the door, just in case she tried to run. "You gotta tell me. Let's just get it over with."
She shifted uncomfortably in her spot, "Really?"
I sighed, "The sooner the better."
She drew in a deep breath. "Okay but don't blame me for what you're about to hear."
Mary's P.O.V
I felt dread in my heart as I waited for my punishment, Richard would tell Malachai about what happened earlier this week. He never threatened, he kept to his word regardless.
"Mary?" I turned and watched Abigail walk into my kitchen. He red hair wasn't tied back and her freckles were heavily evident against her pale skin. "I just saw the Outlander."
I gritted my teeth at the name, I refused to call her by her new name; Outlanders are Outlanders, no matter what. "The new one?"
"Yes." She answered, "Isaac took her to the church so I could not listen in on what they were talking about but Malachai went over there in a fit of rage."
I turned, disbelief more than likely covered my face. He was already caring for her! When did this occur?! Now getting rid of her was a more difficult task than before, if she's pregnant then killing her is a no go. Killing new life, from an Outlander or not, was a sin and punishable by death.
"Any clue as what she went there for?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
Abigail shook her head, "No but there is to be a meeting in the church tonight."
I was taken by surprise there, we hardly ever held meetings in the church; only when it was raining did we use the church for such and it was a brilliant day today. What could it be for? Certainly not for those Outlanders. "Find out why there's a meeting."
She nodded, "Okay." with that, Abigail left. Now that she was gone I returned to my previous thoughts. Not so much my pending punishment but more so that blasted Outlander, the one who took Malachai from us single girls.
Malachai, the most handsome and secondly powerful person here in Gatlin. All us single girls dreamed of him knocking at our door, giving us this look of lust and finding ourselves standing in the alter. But then, that Outlander girl came. With her curvy body, chocolate brown hair, dark brown eyes and pale skin; here such variety was practically nonexistent. Not only that, it was obvious she wasn't even from the state of Nebraska. Her accent said it all.
Damn that girl and her friends, I'll make them pay for even coming to Gatlin. I thought back to how we found that boy's body in their trunk, his throat was deliberately cut by Malachai for trying to run. He too was to blame, if it wasn't for him running she would not have ever came here for help!
Ruth's P.O.V
I waited for Malachai to respond after I explained one of my nightmarish predictions. I'll admit, it wasn't exactly something you'd expect from me, being an Outlander and all. It wasn't a prediction at all too. It was a memory.
You see, since I can talk to the dead and they can talk to me they also can give me their memories, emotions, and anything else they last felt before death. This memory was quite the horrifying scare and the reason it was given to me was because a man in the near future would experience the same thing. I found that weird but whatever.
"I-I..." He stuttered, which proved how bad it was, "I remember that day..."
I bit my lip, "See? That's why I never said anything. Besides, they're aren't that useful anyways."
He sighed, "Maybe so, but you still have to tell me." He draped his arm around me, pulling my body closer to him, "By the way, you wouldn't happen to know if you're pregnant would you?"
I blushed madly , "Uh, no I don't." I had the spirits once but they told me I wasn't yet. I'm not sure I want to be anytime soon. "You know, I should make lunch!" I tried to leave, partially forgetting that he locked the door which left me fumbling with the lock a bit.
"Ruth." I felt his arms snake around my waist. "You know we have to start some time."
When he started to nip at my neck I felt myself kind of bend to his will. Thinking a million excuse, less than half could I use, I started blabbing. "What if the boys come looking for us?"
"They know better than to come to our room, remember?" That's right, his first ground rule for them to be welcomed here was to never to Malachai and mine's room.
"What about my friends?" I whined as he took me to the bed, "What if Richard and Rose come by?"
"First of all," he said, towering my body. "They never behave, except for Shiloh I'll admit, but none are going to be visiting for a while till they learn their place."
I yelped as he yanked at my dress, "Secondly, Richard knows better than to come to my house unannounced." So then I had no excuse for turning him away!
Well lucky me!
Shiloh's P.O.V
Eli washed his knife while made us both sandwiches from the supplies the girls bring everyday. Our relationship may not match the borderline affection Ruth and Malachai but we were second best at decency compared to Zina and Judith. They were incredibly defiant toward Aron and David from what Eli has told me.
"Why aren't you as bad as your other two friends?" He asked suddenly, "You do what you're told just like Ruth."
Though the question caught me by surprise I replied without hesitation. "Last time Ruth was with us, she told us we had to mind our actions otherwise we'd be severely punished." I shrugged, "I guess I found it easier to do what I'm told rather than rebel like they do."
He looked at me for a minute but I interrupted his stare as I placed his plate and glass a milk on the table. "You're weird."
I smiled, "So are you."
He laughed, "True."
I giggled at his acceptance of the small joke while happily munching on the pork sandwich I had made. I'll admit, I missed our extravagant meals from back home but this simple world was better than weight watchers. With little supplies and even littler portions given that were enough to help you survive a day, you were a health thin soon. And everything is organic and natural. I suppose these kids aren't completely bad.
"You should get out more." Eli said after a few bites, "Maybe tomorrow you should go see Ruth and Rose."
I hummed as I took a another bite, "You think so?" I gulped down some of my milk and replied, "It would be nice to see a familiar face again." without the blood lust of course.
He smiled, "You'll see them all tonight."
"What?"
"We're having a meeting and they'll be there." He took another bite, finishing his meal with a last gulp of milk. "I gotta get back to harvesting, I'll come back for you before the meeting okay?"
I nodded, "Okay."
He leaned forward and kissed the top of my head, making me blush a bit. "Be good while I'm gone."
I watched him leave before taking a bite of my sandwich. Eli wasn't bad like David and Aron were, he at least helped me get into the woman's routine of the household while the other two just threw stuff at Zina and Judith. I cringed as I called them by their new holy names; names supposedly worthy of his grace. Ruth wasn't that bad of a name for Michelle, it kinda suited her but Zina and Judith did not suit Zenin or Jackie. I don't think any other name could suit those two actually, Zenin and Jackie just was all that could fit those two.
I shook my head and finished my lunch, I had laundry that needed to be put away and I needed to collect more twigs and dead grass so I could have a fire to make breakfast tomorrow. Since there a meeting, I figured that we were having a group dinner again. I didn't mind the dinners with the whole cult since I could sit with Zina and Judith but Ruth would be with Malachai, who sat next to Isaac.
I was worried now that I thought about that, Ruth did say her powers were something Isaac wanted. Could that be what the meeting's for? Could it be that Isaac wanted the whole cult to know of her gift? The same gift that made her a freak of nature to our modern world? This was just fabulous!
ELLO PEEPS! wow I'm on a bit of a roll huh? That's good though! So this time I included Mary's and Dylan's (Shiloh) P.O.V. what do you guys think of it? Was it good? Was it bad? Let me know!
