Chapter VIII

He was laying his bed, wishing his hand would hurt. He knew it was stupid, since he was still sore, but it was really pain in the ass having an arm that merely was there. No sense, no mobility, nothing. Just a freaking dead weight, uncontrolled and unwanted. It even bothered his sleep, if he rolled around, the hand would stay behind or be in an awkward position and twist his shoulder/neck area.

And he was annoyed. There as still no sign of Fai. And he was seriously bored. Staying in his room, even if he could walk around it was boring. But he still wasn't allowed to go around the hospital by himself.

In the evening, he finally had had enough. He got out of the bed and went to the door. The sifts were changing, and the visiting hours were over, so there wasn't anyone in the hallway that he could see. He cracked the door open and listened. No sound of footsteps. He allowed himself a small satisfied grin and slipped out of the room.

He had no idea of the layout of the hospital, so he just started walking. If he would find some sort of wall map that would tell him where to go. He hoped that Fai would not be in IC, because there he probably couldn't get. But he figured that wasn't likely, because theoretically then Fai should not have been able to walk out of there so often either. In the same sense he figured Fai would be close, since even though he seemed rather good, he wasn't in too good shape either.

He wandered around, when he heard footsteps. They weren't soft or dragging like patients in slippers would have, but rather fast and loud. Determined not to get caught, he opened the nearest patient room door and hid there. The steps passed and he sighed in relief. So far so good

"What are you doing here young man? If you try any indecent things I will scream"

shocked he turned around, heart pounding. But the only thing he saw was a fragile and tiny old lady laying in bed. The wrinkled face seemed worried, but the mouth had a determined lines and she was holding her chin up bravely.

He lifted his hands up, palms towards the lady

"Sorry to disturb you." the lady looked at him, squinting her eyes

"What are you doing here young man?" she asked

"I'm just looking for a...friend" he said, hesitating a moment to think what Fai actually meant to him, why was he really doing this. Not for pity for sure, nor because he felt sorry for the blond.

"Why?" the lady inquired, still looking doubtful, but already showing a little curiosity. He sighed and shrugged

"Because I haven't seen him in days. But the trouble is I have no idea where he is, and I am not yet allowed to walk around"

the lady's face softened and the tension vanished.

"I can see that you have been through a lot." she glanced at his hand that was just hanging there, like it did nowadays all the time. "I have been here quite a long time, and I hear a lot of stuff. Tell me about your friend, and maybe I can help you"

he nodded

"okay. He is blond, about my age, little shorted, one eyed, but the one remaining one is really lovely blue" he felt his cheeks heat up after that slip. He mentally cursed himself, what the hell was he blabbing about, this was not like him. But he wished the lady would not have noticed anything out of the ordinary.

No such luck. The lady's eyes twinkled and she was smiling when she teased him

"Lovely blue? I guess he is rather important to you, am I right?"

he opened his eyes to deny it, but for some reason he couldn't, not completely at least, and it would sound really fake to try to explain it differently. So he just gazed around the walls, pretending he had not heard the lady's last sentence. But he knew he was blushing. But maybe it was unnoticed in the dim light.

Again, no luck

"Oh, no need to be ashamed, I am not old fashioned even though I myself am old." the lady smiled at him kindly. "I think it's great that young people still care about each others, no need to judge someone just because they happen to like someone else." he looked at the lady sternly, and saw no hint of lying there.

"It's not quite that serious." he said anyway " but I am worried. He has suffered few heavy blows lately and he was angry the last time I saw him. I just want to make sure nothing else has gone wrong" the lady lift an eyebrow but didn't comment, just shook her head amusedly before saying

"I do know who you are talking about. He has visited me too after his surgery. Such a fine young man, so polite and cheery. So you did something to make him angry? No wonder I haven't seen him in a while" she sighed with sorrow "Too bad. It was probably you he was talking about. One day he came here very happy, and when I asked him about it, he said he felt like a stone would have been lifted from his shoulder, that he had had a talk with a person that had made him feel better. Not so guilty."

He swallowed hard. He hadn't thought the blond would have had talked about him, or their talk to anyone else. It was weird that his words would have mattered so much, but he felt rather good to hear that he had managed to make Fai feel a bit better. Even if only for a while. But now it was even more important to find him soon, he had already waited too long for the blond to come. He had had no idea the blond was so complicated. Albeit on hindsight, that was rather obvious. Fai was on his own class.

"You know where he is?"

"Yes. He is close. In the next intersection, turn left and he is in room 302. or at least he was few days ago." he nodded and rushed out of the room, saying a quick thank you. He was close. And he was still uncaught, so maybe he could reach Fai tonight, and see how the blond was really doing. But this time he wouldn't let Fai off the hook easily, he wanted some truths, and he wanted to bang some sense into the blond head, in case it hadn't sunk in yet.
