Only Fair

James snuck into his dad's study, his eyes roaming the room as he tried to figure out where his father would have hidden it. He'd tried to find it every year since he'd begun Hogwarts, and as this was his seventh and final year, he thought it was about time he got it.

Trying the drawers of the desk brought no luck, neither did the cabinet - although the bottom drawer was locked up tight because it held Auror files that were top secret. All the kids knew that they weren't ever to try and get into that drawer.

James had accused his dad of hiding it in there, but his dad promised him he hadn't. James knew his dad didn't lie to them about things like that, so he'd never pressed the issue.

Rifling through one of the old boxes that were stacked by the door, James heard footsteps approaching the study, and he didn't have enough time to hide.

Harry raised his eyebrow at his oldest son as he entered his study. "Searching for the map again, kid?"

James nodded, a resigned look on his face. Harry chuckled.

It made Harry laugh just how much James took after his namesake, although he was proud that his son kept the pranks much more innocent than Harry's father had.

"Want a clue?"

James nodded again, eagerly this time.

"It's not in this room," Harry mock whispered.

James blinked. "Really?"

Harry nodded. "Really, really."

Cursing under his breath, James left the room quickly. Harry shook his head as he watched him go. It was a wonder that child managed to play any pranks, given his lack of subtlety.

Albus on the other hand…

Harry wondered if he'd be able to convince his middle child to at least let James have the map for his last year at Hogwarts. Al had had it for three years after all - it was only fair.
