After Rose flooed home she walked over and calmly sat on the couch she hasn't seen in half a year. She had no time to reminisce in the joy of finally returning home. To take in that certain smell that was distinctly home. The atmosphere. None of it clicked as Rose sat staring at her fireplace for her parents to floo in. Her brother Hugo had gone before her. He had barely any idea what was even going on.
All Hugo registered was something happen to make their father angry with Rose. But that was enough information for Hugo to run and hide under the sink so he would still be able to eavesdrop on the argument.
Rose was paler than usual making her freckles stand out. Her eyes already welled with tears. She had never angered her father before in her entire her life. She never disobeyed a single of his orders. Now he barely looked at her or spoke to her in the time from which she gotten off of the train a few moments ago. These moments however brief seemed like an eternity to the small girl.
At the time she was stubborn, she wanted her friend to know she wasn't ashamed of him. She doesn't regret it in the least bit. However, the fear of her father's wrath finally clicked for her. Alas all she could do was wait.
On the other side Ron and Hermione sat arguing. Hermione calm and collecting spitting out fact after solid fact. Ronald a blithering image of stupid and over reacted. He was red from his ears to his toes and as he yelled at his wife he couldn't stop himself from accidentally spraying her with spit. As he always did when he was mad, a vein was throbbing in the corner of his forehead.
"Ronald, darling. I cannot allow you to approach our daughter in this state now calm down and listen to me." Hermione spoke with confidence. In truth she didn't like this friendship with Scorpius. Not in the least bit. However, she never met the child. If this made their Rose, a perfectly sensible and capable girl, happy. Well if it made her happy she would fight for her daughters happiness.
"Why should I listen to you? You're the one who always said not to speak too ill of the bloke's bloody kid! You are the one who went on that nonsense about not making grudges before she even goes there. Maybe if I did then she wouldn't like him. WHAT IF SHE ENDS UP MARRYING HIM! How would you feel having to sit side bye side with the man who once watched a woman carve that scar into your arm?!" Ronald was pacing back and forth running a calloused hand through his thinning hair.
"She's not marrying him Ronald!" She let out a deep calming breath. If she lost her cool as well they'd never get anywhere, "Let's talk about this logically do you trust your daughter?"
"THAT'S NOT THE-"
Hermione glared at him venomously and cut him off speaking louder in almost a yell, "DO… do you trust our Rose?"
He started to calm down, "Well of course I trust her. It's him I don't trust the little slimy haired git."
"HE may look like his father but he is not. You have said on more than one occasions that the Malfoys have turned themselves around. Those were your words, love. She can make her own enemies. Her own mistakes and her own friends. We both know Rose will be more than capable. If not she has Albus, James, Fred, Dom, she will have Hugo, Lily, teddy's there, Victoire, Luis, and Roxanne. She is well protected these aren't your battles."
He sighed and bit his lip, "I just. Agh. I hate watching this. It's moving by fast her first years already up. It feels like just yesterday that…. Ugh. Now a Malfoy? What if she starts asking to spend holidays with him or him to spend holidays with us. I wouldn't want a little blonde haired snot running around sleeping in our guest room."
"I don't love the idea, but if it's what Rose wishes… You can't live her life for her. We are here to guide her and mold her not to live her life. We have been there. If one day she asks him to spend a holiday with us. We will let her." Hermione told her husband.
He nodded understanding.
"We should get going she probably thinks you hate her Ron." Hermione tried offering a small smile to her love.
He returned the smile pulled her close and kissed the tip of her nose, "you're so smart."
"You're just figuring this out now?" She teased with a chuckle and pecked her husband on the lips.
Ron flooed in after Hermione Rose sat stiff as a brick wall desperately holding back her tears in her bright blue eyes.
Ron sat next to his daughter on the couch silence enveloped the room for a few seconds that seemingly felt like an eternity.
Finally Rose exploded in hysterics, "Daddy, I'm so so sorry. I never meant to hurt you or mom. I know how you feel about his family. He's different I swear. He doesn't define himself by houses. I swear daddy he is good. He has been nothing but kind to me. He is extremely smart dad he gets perfect grades. Competes with me for top of the first years. He is really nice. Him and Albus are friends too. He's my best mate dad. I know it's crazy I know you are so angry with me, but if you met him you would see. He is really good at chess. Never lost a game Al thinks he could even beat you daddy. I'm sorry if you could just-"
Ron smiled and hugged his daughter at first, shell-shocked, she froze then clutched his back.
Ron was always bad with hysterical females. He was bad at this. He had no idea what half the things his daughter was saying she spoke with such a speed he almost thought she was speaking parsle tongue. Part of him was ashamed that he put his daughter in this much pain for something so small. He knew if she was this worked up over this there was no way she'd ever do anything wrong ever. He was also greatly reassured with himself.
So in response to his daughters pleading he whispered, "I trust your judgment Rosie Posie."
Then out of no where their kitchen emitted a loud bang. They broke apart getting up to find her mother pulling Hugo out of their cupboard.
"There wasn't even yelling how lame?" Were the small freckled boys only words.
His mother scolded him. Rose and Her father shared a look before erupting in laughter.
"Honestly Ronald! Laughing only encourages this behvior!" She pulled the boy out of the kitchen by his ear and Her father and herself kept laughing.
Things were normal. Things were good. As they always were.
Scorpius sat on a much to crowded for his liking couch. His spleen was being punctured by a small 10 year old boy named Louis. On his left sat Rose weasley back to him as she conversed with Albus and sitting on Albus was Fred. On the chair of the arm was James. They were all having a heated conversation about quid ditch he was neglecting to cooperate in.
Not for lack of knowledge, but lack of communication skills.
His conversations with Rose's family ended at a party during school last year.
Why had he given into the pleading words of Rose Weasley as she begged him to come over for a week before school started.
The house smelled of children all the time. He himself was a child this he knew, but at least he smelled properly. This house upheld the lingering odor of mud, dirt, and stink.
It was very much packed beyond the regular capacity.
Such a small house, so many Red heads and freckles. His house was always clean, sleek, and empty. Too much room all the time.
Oddly enough this house didn't suffocate him like he presumed it would. It was crowded yes, but after 3 excruciatingly long days it felt…. Comforting?
Perhaps there was some ease in knowing that if a rogue wizard burst in to kill you in your sleep there would be someone to hear your screams.
What a morbid thought to have.
Scorpius then noticed the pair of dark blue, nearly black, eyes that were firing blades into his entity.
Directly across from him sat Lorcan Scamander. Scorpius had no inclination as to why this boy despised his very existence so much, but in all honesty he found it quite amusing to act as though he didn't notice.
Ever since Scorpius had started school Lorcan had hated him. He always felt the rage hidden behind the glares. In the beginning he assumed it was just the lies that everyone is fed about the Malfoys. Well not lies, they are based on truth he supposed, but no longer. His father might not have been there a lot, but when he was there he taught him moral. He raised him right.
He would be the malfoy to change the meaning of the name. He hoped at least. But he scratched this theory of Lorcan when they were on the train ride home in the beginning of summer holidays.
Winning that chess match meant something more to Lorcan. He was fighting with his entire soul he could see it. The way he'd slam his hand on the table the sweat droplets pooling down his face. The way he was running his hands through his obviously done hair messing it all up.
Lorcan wanted to beat him at something. Somehow Scorpius made him feel inferior.
To be truthful Scorpius had a small, tiny option to procure.
He had watched Lorcan for some time. Seen the way he treated others. Saw how self centered he was. How he would belittle his own twin.
Then there was how he acted with Rose.
Nice, sweet, gentle, kind, and shy. Lorcan was not these things from what he's observed so why was this boy treated his mouse so differently.
He suspected Lorcan had an everlasting crush on Rose for quite some time. Perhaps since they were children even.
Now he like all others of the school saw Scorpius as a threat. Now he had to prove to Rose that he was better than Scorpius.
What a ridiculous thought. To think I'd fancy Mouse.
He was 12. He had no time to worry about notions of love.
If he did what did Rose have to offer? Hot tempered? Emotional exaggeration?
Kindness, Caring, Truthfulness. The way she would laugh at everything whole heartedly throwing her head back her cheeks tingling pink and cackle the most horrifying sound and still not care. Her smile that always tripled in size when she saw him. The fluttering feeling in the pit of his stomach right now.
Perhaps the feeling she is the only one who cares if you are alone. She can force you to do excruciatingly painful things like come to a smelly house for a week or to a party and you'll go with a pitiful fight.
Now where did that come from? Why would he think such obliterating things about his best friend?
But don't get me started about her eyes or her hair. The unruly beast that should be revolting but only adds to her mischievousness. Her growing urge to shine despite all her cousins and family. He desire ro succeed at such a young age is enough to Implore. She's a mystery that you can't figure out.
She's his best mate. So what he did was, as always. Chose to forget the even thought such things. She was nothing special. She was Rose. She cared about school and friends.
He was Scorpius he cared about Rose, strictly as a friend. But he sat on this damned couch that is encrusted with dust of old cheese covered foods. Yes he sat on this filth and knew he cared little about much else. School came easily enough, he only excelled at it because he liked seeing the Rose's face when he beat her. It also gave him something to occupy his time.
He had no other friends for him to was just Rose. In the moment he couldn't see a problem with this. How Naïve of poor Scorpius.
Lorcan was alone sitting by the tree as Lily walked up and sat next to him .
"Hey Lorc." She beamed a wide toothed smile.
"Lils." He said glumly.
"Where's Lysander?"
"Probably off with James or reading a bloody book I don't know why don't you go find him?" He snapped at her shaking his head refusing to look at the young girl.
"Why are you so upset?" Lily asked much more calmly than Lorcan expected from such a hot tempered girl.
He didn't respond.
"It's because of Scorpius isn't it? You don't like him."
Again he stayed silent, but an uncontrollable snarl took upon his face at the mention of the snakes name.
"Hmm, but I know why you hate him so much!" Lily smirked at him deviously and he rolled his eyes.
"Oh I doubt that Lily."
She nodded and sulked then her voice oozing with sarcasm, "Oh… So you aren't in love with Rose?"
The boy was stricken pale his eyes wide as can be yet he remained silent and the girl squealed.
"But I've known for years. You have liked her since you were kids."
"It doesn't even matter." he said as he watched in the distance her throwing mud at Scorpius's pale skin and him retaliating. She laughed her loud obnoxious cackle that traveled to his ears as a feint foreign sound.
"She doesn't like him Lorc." Lily attempted to cheer the boy who was staring forlornly at her cousin.
"Not yet, but they will. She doesn't notice me."
"Maybe you're right. Maybe he likes her. But Rose doesn't want that yet and he's smart enough to realize that. Maybe he doesn't even know it yet. I really don't think either of them have a clue about their feelings. I know that's the farthest thing from our Rose's mind. But you have an advantage Lorc. Play your cards right and she will fall for you not him. Maybe in 2 years when she's ready and starts to want to date someone. It'll be you because you've never been stupid enough to call her your best friend. She was always the girl you loved since you were a kid. She might not notice yet but one day she'll notice someone make sure its you."
Lily stared at him longingly. She understood how the boy felt. She too has been infatuated with someone as long as she could remember. When Rose was a kid she wanted to be an author. Lily always just wanted to fall in love. And suddenly in came these twins one was so shy and never talked but the other would always play house with her and Rose. She was always with Rose and that's where he always wanted to be. With the oblivious Rose.
Since they were 4 and she was 3. But what chance did she have? She was so young. She was inferior to Rose in every aspect. But she knew that she couldn't have him so she'd want him to be happy. She was much too young to know things anyways. Perhaps this wasn't love perhaps its what they called puppy love. Yes. That must be it, but it still hurts just as much seeing him so sad.
His dark eyes grew nearly black when he was this sad.
She never wanted to see him so sickly looking again. She would help him however she could. One day he will be happy because one day Rose would pick him. And if he was happy that would be enough to make her happy….Right? That's how it worked in the movies at least.
