He's speeding.
He shouldn't, he's always been a good driver and knows he shouldn't, he's always been good about following the laws (most laws that is) but, well, how could he not be speeding right now?
He glances over at Jade from the corner of his eye. She's clutching her belly, eyes closed, head pressed against the headrest. She's breathing steadily, in and out, in and out.
There's tears spilling from the corners of her eyes.
"Babe," his voice cracks, and he swallows the lump in his throat before he tries again, "Jade, talk to me."
The brunette swallows roughly before she turns her head toward him. "About what?" she asks, and Beck hates how weak her voice sounds.
"Anything," Beck tells her. When she doesn't say anything, Beck pushes, "How's Bade?"
Jade blinks her hours open. "I think he knows," her eyes drift down to her stomach. "He keeps laying right down on my stomach."
"It would be cute, him and a baby. Imagine those pictures," Beck comments.
"If I have a baby."
"Jade," Beck says sternly.
"Just being realistic," she mutters.
Beck swallows the lump that forms in his throat as he reaches over and intertwines their fingers. "Everything is going to be fine Jade. I know it."
Everything is going to be fine Jade.
How could he even say that?
How could he even think that?
It wasn't going to be okay, she was going to lose the baby, she knows it.
Because whenever something good happens to her, she loses it.
Not that this baby is a good thing.
Because having a baby at her age is not a good thing.
But it wasn't a bad thing.
Well it was, but it wasn't.
"Jade."
She snaps back into reality and looks toward him.
He squeezes her hand. "You're going to be okay. We're going to be okay. The baby," he pauses, his eyes drifting quickly to her belly back to the road, "the baby is going to be fine."
Jade doesn't say anything for the rest of the way.
When they get to the hospital, Beck is pressing his hand against her back, pushing her toward the reception.
The cramps haven't gone away, but they haven't gotten worst.
That's a good thing, right?
"Hi," Beck says, getting the receptionist attention, "my girlfriend, she's uh, well she's pregnant and she's bleeding. She needs to see a doctor."
The receptionist looks at them before turning her attention back to Beck. "Bleeding from where?"
Jade narrows her eyes. Is this lady a fucking idiot? "Where else would it be concerning for a pregnant woman to be bleeding from!?"
The woman narrows her eyes at her. "If you're pregnant you need to calm down. Especially if you think there's something wrong," the elder woman tells Jade, and Jade stiffens when she feels Beck's hand on hers, thumb stroking her skin, trying to calm her. The receptionist turns toward her computer, types something in and then turns toward Beck. "Take her to the sixth floor. There'll be a doctor waiting for her."
The receptionist stands before she grabs a wheelchair and motions for Jade to sit down.
Jade's nose scrunches up. "Do I really have to?"
"Hospital policy."
Jade rolls her eyes as she sits down in the wheelchair. "I'm pregnant, not invalid," she mutters.
Beck kisses the top of her head. "Just being cautious babe."
Jade rolls her eyes once again when a particularly painful cramp hits her. She's so shocked that she can't stop the noise that escapes her lips.
Beck squeezes her hands. "You alright?" he asks worriedly.
Jade swallows the lump in her throat. "Let's-Let's just go."
He's shaking.
Beck is fairly good at remaining calm despite whatever is happening around him, but right now, he's shaking.
He keeps his voice steady though. Whenever he speaks to Jade, he makes sure his voice is calm, because he knows, he has to be there for her.
He has to be her rock.
When he gets them to the sixth floor, the doctor greets them with a smile. "Right this way," she tells him, and they're in a room and the doctor is asking Jade a bunch of questions that Beck doesn't really understand.
"How far along are you?" the doctor wants to know.
"Uh, two or three months?" Jade guesses.
"She hasn't been to a doctor yet," Beck informs the older woman. "We-We just found out ourselves."
The woman nods as she scribbles something onto her clipboard. "Take off your clothes please," she requests, grabbing a paper gown. "I'll be right back."
Beck nods, watches the doctor leave before he turns toward Jade. "Do you need help?"
Jade narrows her eyes at him. "Stop."
"Stop what?" Beck asks her.
"Stop acting like that," Jade snaps. "Like I'm fucking broken."
Beck rolls his eyes. Of course Jade would want to get in an argument right now
"It was a simple question," he tells her.
"Well the answer to your question is no, I don't need your help," Jade growls as she reaches for the hem of her shirt and takes it off.
Beck groans.
He doesn't need this right now. He just needs her to be okay.
He needs the baby to be okay.
Beck is taken from his thoughts when he hears Jade hiss.
"You alright?" he asks.
"Yeah," Jade mutters as she pulls down her jeans the rest of the way, before she wraps the the paper gown around her body before she lays down on the bed.
Beck moves over and motions to her hand. "Can I?"
Jade shrugs her shoulders, and Beck takes her hands in hers. Beck strokes his thumb over her skin, staring at her stomach.
Where his baby is.
"You ready in there?" they hear, and Beck turns to see the doctor poking her head in.
The doctor walks in her hands are immediately on Jade's belly. "Where does it hurt?" the doctor wants to know.
Jade rubs her stomach.
"Not your lower abdomen?" the doctor asks.
Jade shakes her head and Beck watches as she bites her bottom lip as he thinks. Then she says, "It's not like a period cramp or anything. It just hurts."
The doctor nods as she presses her hands against Jade stomach.
"Okay, I'm gonna ask you to take off your underwear for me please."
Beck furrows his brows. "Is something wrong?" Beck wants to know as Jade detangles her hand from his so that she can remove her underwear.
"I just want to check something," the doctor says with a small smile.
Jade removes her underwear, and the doctor moves to take them. She raises an eyebrow. "How long have you been bleeding?" the doctor inquires as she inspects the panties.
Beck can't see how much blood there is, but he's worried it's a lot.
Jade shrugs. "Not long. As soon as I felt the blood I left...uh, I left school so I could come here," Jade tells the doctor.
The doctor smiles. "Well, I'm glad that you did. Just a couple more questions. What did you eat this morning?"
Jade furrows her brow. "I-I haven't eaten anything yet," the brunette admits, and she looks almost...sheepish. Beck thinks to chide her, because she can't do that, skip meals, not now.
Not when she having a baby.
"I mean, I just throw everything up," Jade explains.
The doctor nods as she scribbles something else down on her clipboard. "I think I know what the problem is," the doctor says a she looks at the couple.
"So there's a problem?" Beck asks, a lump forming in his throat and a knot forming in his belly.
The doctor doesn't nod nor does she shake her head no. She just gives them a smile and says, "How about we check the baby together, hm?"
Beck notices Jade tense, but he's already nodding. "Yeah, the would great."
The doctor has Hade open her robe just slightly, and she's grabbing a tube of that gooey stuff that Beck knows is what doctors put on a woman's stomach for an ultrasound.
"This will a little cold."
Jade nods, and the doctor squirts the ultrasound gel onto Jade's belly before rubs it in with the probe thing.
The doctor points to a gray little...thing on the screen. "Do you guys see that?" she asks.
"That blob?" Jade asks.
The doctor chuckles as she nods and says, "Well, that blob is your baby."
Beck swears his heart stops beating. "Our baby?"
The doctor nods again. "Yes. The bleeding that Jade is experiencing is called implantation bleeding. It happens during the first twelve week, and it seems as if Jade is right around nine. Your baby is just making itself at home in your womb. The bleeding should stop in a couple days."
Jade shakes her head. "What-What about the cramps?"
The doctor tuts as she says, "Hunger pains. You're starving, and your body will surely let you know now that you're pregnant."
Beck shakes his head. He can't believe it.
Their baby is okay.
"So, she's healthy? The baby and Jade are healthy?" Beck asks, because he just needs to make sure.
"It is for now. But Jade needs to eat regularly, as well as get prenatal vitamins for the baby to continue to be healthy. I can write up a prescription before you leave."
"That would be great," Beck says.
He knows Jade will be pissed, but he's not taking any chances.
"Okay. So, one last thing. Would you guys like to hear your child's heartbeat?"
Beck looks down at Jade, who's already staring at him.
"Do you want to?" Beck asks, because even if he knows that he's been calling the shots so far, this is one thing she needs to decide.
He watches as Jade swallows before she turns toward the doctor. "Yes, we would like to hear the heartbeat."
The doctor smiles before she flips a switch.
Lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub.
Beck's eyes go wide. "That's the baby?"
Lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub.
The doctor nods. "That's the baby."
Lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub, lub-dub.
Beck turns toward Jade, who's eyes are shimmering with tears.
"That's our baby."
