Chapter 8: A Promise Kept
The money, it is right in front of me. I can pay for Sam's operation, she can see again. But, should I take it? I always worked for my money, I can't accept it. It would be wrong. Yet, they wanted to help me, wanted to show their appreciation. If I don't take it would I look disrespectful? What would be the right decision? Technically, I earned the money, Po's mind told him. The poor panda's head was swirling. He wanted to pay for the operation, yet felt bad for accepting money. Po glanced around the five and they all watched with hopeful eyes that he would accept the money.
"Well, don't want to look ungrateful," Po finally said taking the money. All of them broke out into grins, Tigress was even smiling, a burst of joy erupting from her. Yet, what she didn't expect was Po hugging her. "Thank you, thank you all," he whispered tears falling down his face.
He felt her arms wrap around him and that funny, warm feeling entered his stomach. "You are, our friend Po, we were happy to help," Tigress whispered in his ear.
A week later
Po stood outside the healer's hut pacing back and forth. Today was Sam's operation, the five wanted to be there but they had to take down a group of bandits, at the last minute. "Po, stop you are going to run a hole in the ground," his dad said.
"I'm just nervous, they should have been done by now," Po said growing worried.
"The operation takes time, Po everything will be fine," Mr. Ping assured. Though he was like Po, worried that the operation went wrong.
Sam's P.O.V
I sat in the chair, what seemed like forever. A million thoughts ran through my mind. When Po came up to me and told me that my birthday present was coming early, I was way excited. Yet, shocked for when I asked him what it was, he said, I am going to give you, your sight back. I couldn't believe it, be able to see again, it was like a miracle. After a year in the dark, Po was keeping his promise, like I kept mine when we were kids. We vowed never to leave each other alone in the dark. Within moments, I would be able to see again.
The healer's footsteps grew louder and I heard him, he was mixing something. It smelled strong, yet sweet. "Okay, Sam, I am going to rub this stuff on your eyes, once it soaks in, you will be able to see within a few minutes. But I need to cover your eyes, for that time, so don't worry my dear, everything will be okay," the healer assured.
"Hold on get my brother," I said. I heard his footsteps fade and I heard Po's voice.
"What is wrong sis?" Po asked. I took his paw and held it.
"Once I am able to see, I want you to be the first thing I see," I said squeezing his paw. I felt his paw squeeze mine and he spoke again.
"Of course sis, I am right here," he said. The healer brushed some stuff on my eyes, and it felt warm yet cool as well. Then once he was done, I felt him wrap a bandage around my eyes, to let, the stuff soak. Minutes slowly ticked by until finally the healer unwrapped my bandage and asked me a very important question.
"Sam, can you see Po?" asked the healer.
My vision was blurry and I slowly blinked, and instantly colors flowed around me. Slowly, yet surely taking shape and I blinked again. Then I saw my brother, his soft fur and his gentle jade eyes looking at me. A hopeful smile was on his face and his paw holding my paw.
"Sam, can you see me?" Po asked a hint of fear in his eyes. I placed my paw on his face and smiled.
"I can see you, Po, I can see you," I cried tears falling down my face. Po wrapped me in his arms and soon dad came in. "I can see, I can see," I said happiness bursting throughout my heart.
Normal P.O.V
A Few weeks later
"Happy Birthday Sam," Po said carrying out a big cake. They were all at the Jade Palace, celebrating Sam's birthday.
"Make a wish sweet heart," Mr. Ping said. Sam blew out the candles and everyone clapped. Po and Tigress were looking on as Sam, was eating her cake.
"I still can't thank you and the others enough," Po said smiling.
"I owed you for awakening my taste buds so, long ago," Tigress said blushing.
"So, you were that tiger from all those years ago," Po said smirking.
"Yeah, I wanted to come back to thank you, your soup was absolutely amazing, but I had to go on a mission. Hence why I began my search to find you, but at the time I didn't know you were you, till later," Tigress said.
"Well, I am so glad that everything worked out. You have your taste buds back and Sam got her sight, in all honesty if you all didn't help with the operation, I was thinking about accepting a job at the Imperial Palace," Po said. Tigress's chest tightened, fearing what would have happened if Po did leave.
"Why didn't you?" she asked.
"Easy didn't want to abandon my dad and sister, my freedom would be limited, and I loved working for you guys," he said.
She turned to him and smiled, as she said, "I'm glad you stayed". Then she kissed his lips, his eyes widened but eased into the kiss.
"Yeah, my wish came true," said Sam smiling. Po just blushed as he kissed Tigress, and soon they enjoyed the party.
