So, I was writing this chapter and decided to check on the story since I forgot something to notice that I've been numbering the chapters wrong... crap! Sorry for taking so long to update but I've been a bit busy.

Pokemon Restart

Chapter 8

Poisonous Soul

"This is certainly a first for me," Professor Oak admitted to Ash from the screen of the phone. "I cannot imagine what sort of experiments were done to Eevee. Whatever it is they were trying to achieve, they obtained."

"How are you so sure of that?" Ash asked with a worried expression.

Professor Oak put on a thoughtful expression as he spoke, "If what they were trying to achieve in this experiment resulted in Eevee being able to evolve at will, then I can assume that their experiments were tied to pokemon evolution. We can conclude that they were successful if the laboratory was abandoned like you said, since that would mean that the research there is of no use to them anymore."

Ash took in the information quietly, not really understanding every single thing but making out the professor's main worry, which was that someone was able to evolve pokemon at will. He really hoped the pokemon weren't hurt by the whole process but he knew better, after all Eevee was really distrustful to the point of attacking anyone it didn't know.

"Do you think there's anything we can do for Eevee?" Ash asked the question weighing most in his mind. Right now Eevee's pokeball hung on his belt and he knew that calling it out would result in a battle.

Professor Oak rubbed his chin in thought, "Eevee is known as the evolution pokemon, meaning that it has the genes of all its evolutions hidden away somewhere. If this is the case then evolving it permanently might resolve the problem since it won't have those genes anymore. From my research on Eevee, I believe that it will have to evolve without the use of evolutionary stones."

Ash nodded in understanding, "I understand. Thanks a lot for your help Professor."

"It's no problem," Professor Oak replied with a smile, "Make sure to call me if anything happens."

"I will," Ash answered as the call ended.

The trainer rose to his feet and leaned against the nearest wall before letting out a long sigh.

"Pika?" Pikachu let out in worry when seeing his trainer acting strange.

"It's nothing buddy," Ash smiled in assurance. "We should probably head out now. Where do you think we should go? We were just in Fuchsia City a couple of days ago but going back to Pallet Town will force us to start over from the beginning again..."

"Pika pi."

"You're right, we could go back to Fuchsia. Besides, going through the Cycling Road will be a lot faster..." Ash trailed off with a sheepish expression as he remembered the number of bikes he and Pikachu had fried. "Anyway, let's get going already. We'll hopefully get there before it gets dark."

With that the two left the Pokemon Center. It wasn't noon yet but the streets were already buzzing with life. Ash's thoughts drifted back to Eevee as he and Pikachu walked through the crowds. He'd only told Professor Oak about Eevee the previous night but the professor had a lot of information ready by the time he woke up, it was no wonder he was so respected.

Since Eevee needed to evolve without the influence of an evolutionary stone, he put it in his team in order to train it but knew that it would be very difficult. Last night had been a disaster since Eevee had attacked the instant Professor Oak let it out of its pokeball, Muk had thankfully been there to stop the angry pokemon.

"Ash?"

The trainer stopped at the mention of his name and turned to the source of the voice only to smile when seeing who it was.

"May," he greeted happily as Pikachu jumped to her arms in glee. "What are you doing out here?"

"I was just looking around the festival and I kinda wanted to see if you were around," she explained with a smile as she scratched Pikachu's head.

Ash grinned at the scene, "How was the Contest?"

May smiled proudly at that, "I got second place. The trainer that won had a really rare pokemon from another region so I had no idea what attacks to use."

"Don't worry about it May. You got second place in a Contest full of great coordinators, congratulations," Ash smiled before clearing his throat, "We're actually on our way to take a ride back to Fuchsia City. Wanna come?"

"Of course! It'll be great to travel with you guys again!" May beamed as Pikachu cheered. "I just need to go back to the Pokemon Center to get my stuff. Can you guys wait for me here?"

"No problem," Ash replied before chuckling when seeing the look on Pikachu's face, "Don't worry buddy. You can go with her, I'm sure she won't mind having you tag along."

"Of course I won't," May answered happily as she and Pikachu left for the Pokemon Center, "I'll be back soon!"

Ash waved in response before sitting on a nearby bench. Something was still troubling him so he took out his Pokedex and began to look though it.

"Eevee, the evolution pokemon. Becasue its genetic makeup is irregular, it quickly changes its form due to a variety of causes."

Interested, the trainer checked what this causes were by pressing a few buttons.

"Eevee can evolve due to an evolutionary stone, a strong bond with its trainer, or by being near special locations. It is unknown why this happen."

"I see..." Ash trailed off as he pocketed the device only to find himself confused when seeing that he was completely alone on the street. "Weren't there a lot of people here just now?"

"Yes there were."

Ash stood up instantly when seeing someone standing in the shadow of a large tree, "Who are you?"

"You know me already," the person standing in the shadows replied as he walked forward, revealing himself to be Koga, the Gym Leader Ash had fought long ago.

Ash didn't let his guard down. There was something really odd about the man. It was hostile, like he was about to attack.

"I didn't think you'd be the one to thwart our plans in the Safari Zone... Even though I fought you as a Gym Leader before, this time will be different," Koga pulled out a pokeball. "My intricate style will confound and destroy you! Prepare to be the victim of my sinister techniques!"

Ash gritted his teeth as he called out his first pokemon, "Gabite, I choose you!"

"Come out, Golbat!"

"First Lt. Surge and now you... Are there any other Gym Leaders that joined Team Rocket?" Ash couldn't help but ask in dread.

Koga smirked in response, "There are. Four of the eight Gym Leaders of the Kanto region are part of Team Rocket. Even some former Elite Four trainers joined our ranks."

Ash clenched his fists as he called out his pokemon's first attack, "Gabite, use Sandstorm!"

"Gabite!" The pokemon let out as it spun in place, kicking up a powerful gust of air that soon became enveloped by sand until it covered the whole area.

"Golbat, find it and use Poison Fang!"

The poison type flew through the raging sandstorm, spotting a shadow and diving towards it only to go straight through it.

"Dragon Claw!"

Gabite easily found his target and landed a solid hit on the Golbat's back, knocking it out with the single attack.

"Dammit, return," Koga recalled his pokemon before sending out another one, "Gengar, time to fight!"

"A gengar..." Ash muttered to himself before calling out a new order, "Use Dig!"

Gabite burrowed into the ground after hearing the command, leaving the gengar looking around for the enemy pokemon.

Ash quirked an eyebrow in confusion when seeing that the gengar had yet to move. He'd planned on having Gabite use Draco Meteor, expecting to have Gengar floating high enough to be hit directly. What was Koga doing?

Gabite soon emerged from the ground beneath Gengar, who easily dodged the attack. "Shadow Ball!" The ghost type shot the attack at Gabite's mid-section before sending it skidding on the ground. "Follow it up with a Focus Blast!"

"Gabite, dodge it!" Ash cried out in vain as the large orange blast struck his pokemon, knocking it out instantly. "Return, you did an awesome job," he muttered to his pokeball before sending out his next pokemon, "Croconaw I choose you!"

"You are too predictable," Koga smirked as he ordered a new attack, "Gengar use Thunder!"

Ash's eyes widened as he watched Gengar prepare the attack that would surely hurt Croconaw badly. "Quick, use Hydro Pump on the ground!" The water type did as instructed and propelled itself off the ground just as the bolt of lightning struck the ground. "Great! Now use Crunch!"

"Naw!" Croconaw cried as he dived towards the Gengar with his mouth wide open.

"Gengar use Shadow Ball!"

"Dodge it!"

Koga watched in shock as Croconaw spun as it fell, safely dodging Gengar's attack before finally biting down on the ghost type. Gengar flailed widely as Croconaw latched onto its arm.

"Throw it in the air!" Ash exclaimed as his pokemon used its jaw to send Gengar flying through the air, "Now use Hydro Pump!"

"Naw!" The pokemon cried out as it unleashed a powerful torrent of water that met its mark, knocking the ghost type out.

Koga snarled as he returned his pokemon, "Muk, come out!"

'This is bad...' Ash thought to himself as he watched the large poison-type emerge from its ball, 'I just hope May and Pikachu are alright."

May could hardly contain her smile as she packed the things in her room. After traveling alone for so long and missing her friends deeply, she was finally going to be traveling with someone again. Not just that but it was Ash, her crush. Back when they had begun their travels in Hoenn she had loved traveling alone with him and, while having Max and Brock travel with them was great, she remembered being a bit peeved over not being able to be alone with the cool trainer she had met.

A smile spread across her face. 'Oh well, I still loved traveling with all of them,' she giggled to herself as she folded a few shirts.

Pikachu watched over the giggling trainer before sighing, knowing that she was in her own little world right now. For now he made himself comfortable on the comfy bed and curled up into a ball, but the comfort didn't last as an odd crashing sound was heard.

"Pika?"

"What is it?" May asked as she finished packing her things.

The pokemon narrowed his eyes in concentration and then heard it, the sound of very rapid wing beats, "Pikachu Pika!"

May looked at Pikachu oddly, not really understanding what he was trying to say but still noting that it was something important based on his frantic state. Before she could ask what was happening, the door to her room was blown apart by a beam of orange light.

"Wha-!" She exclaimed in surprise, taking a few steps back as Pikachu moved to stand in front of her, cheeks sparking threateningly.

A crobat entered the room, turning its attention to them as its trainer walked into the room. She was around the same size as May but her face was covered and she wore some sort of ninja outfit.

"Girl with brown hair helping someone with a pikachu... You must be the one we are looking for," the masked girl spoke in a threatening tone.

May scowled, "Tell me what you want? Why are you looking for someone like that?"

The masked girl scoffed before pointing a finger, "Crobat, use Poison Fang!"

Crobat instantly closed in on May but was swatted aside by a powerful Thunderbolt that made it crash into the room's wall.

"Chu Pika!" Pikachu cried out in a battle stance.

"Thank you Pikachu," May smiled at the pokemon before facing the masked girl, "I don't know who you are but I'll stop whatever you're planning!"

"Pika!"

A trainer smirked as he walked through the drones of people with their eyes glowing a light blue. They were being controlled by some powerful Psychic-type pokemon but thanks to his Haunter he wasn't affected.

His smirk disappeared when he saw someone come out of the town's Pokemon Center. It was a man wearing the Team Rocket uniform who was soon joined by another two, all of them carrying large bags on their backs.

"Tch! Those Team Rocket cowards think they can do whatever they want," he growled as he turned to his Haunter, "If you know what's good for you, you won't fall to those weaklings."

Haunter nodded confidently as it gazed at the Team Rocket members with a smirk on its face.

"Alright then, attack!"
