Chapter 8: B and Dawn

"Alright, children, this is it. The beginning of a new school year is only a week away. This evening should be very intriguing, shouldn't it?" Dawn looked back to the four children in the back of the vehicle.

The oldest child nodded. "Yeah, now's the perfect opportunity to look at the auras of our classmates and observe how they changed over the summer. We'll also get to find out the auras of our teachers this year too."

"Indeed. And Forrest, please don't talk to your new teacher about their aura. We don't want them to freak out about us and our talents do we?"

"No, mother."

Dawn hadn't gained much height over the years but she did grow somewhat. During her time as part of the Total Drama cast, she had managed to steer relationships on the right paths. She was the one who convinced Duncan that Gwen wasn't the one for him by explaining how the way soul mates work is each person had a significant other that fulfilled the qualities that they didn't have, thus keeping them balanced. The problem with Duncan and Gwen was they were too alike and that was unhealthy for their relationship. Duncan was the one that broke rules and Courtney was the one that followed rules. Their polar opposite personalities is what made their relationship work. She was all too right about that. She convinced Gwen to take Trent back and managed to help Scott and Noah see who their matches were as well. After Total Drama, Dawn had worked hard to become part of environment and animal protection. She was the head caretaker of the mutated animals in the Fun Zone on Boney Island, which is why the family lived close to Lake Wawanakwa. Her prior experience with the mutants helped her land the job so now she made observations of each unique creature and figured out the care they needed. Of course, there was no danger of exposure to toxic waste since the government took care of that.

The family pulled up into the school's parking lot. This would be Forrest and Simon's last year here before he went over to the middle/high school.

"We're here, let's go inside." Dawn told the family as they unbuckled their seat belts.

Forrest was the eldest of B and Dawn's four children. He and Simon were the most fraternal of twins there could be. At eleven years old, Forrest had the skin complexion of his father and his father's hair while having his mother's eyes. He was a little chubby but not much. Like his father, he was mechanically inclined and unlike his father, he talked more. The elder twin was quite popular in his English classes, his Social Studies classes, and recess. Ever since he was little, whenever he was with his friends on the playground, there were times where their ball or Frisbee would get stuck up somewhere high but it wouldn't be long before Forrest could get it down with one of his ideas. His creative ingenuity was why his friends wanted to partner up with him for projects. Also, he happened to be well versed in aura observation, a skill he tended to be vocal about when using it much like his mother when she was growing up. His friends praised him for this gift because it put the more sinister characters at school in their place whether it was a teacher or a student but it also led to them getting into trouble.

On the other hand, Simon was the quieter of the two. His appearance was all of his mother and none of his father with the obvious exception being his blood. One could describe him as more of an observer than a talker. While in his brother's group of friends, he tended to be classed in his own category due to his strange behavior. Just like his mother, he had a habit of seemingly appearing out of nowhere thus spooking whoever he was trying to be near. If people saw how focused he could get on something, they could tell his mind was at work. Aside from the occasional question or comment, he didn't do much talking and just went along with what was going on, which is why he was often caught up in his brother's childhood antics. To say the least, his personality was one of the most complex auras Dawn had seen in her life. He was academically inclined enough where his parents were sure he could skip a grade or two if he wanted to.

As the family walked through the school open house, the youngest child named Violet shyly hid behind the rest of her family. It was her first year at the school so she had a right to be nervous. Soon the family stopped in front of a classroom for kids with special needs.

Dawn then turned to her children. "We have to get everything set up with Violet first then we'll see the rest of your classrooms okay?"

"That's fine." Simon said, speaking for the eighth time of the day.

The girl beside him nodded. "Yep, we can wait."

"B, Violet, let's go in." Dawn said to her husband and youngest child respectively. Violet saw the classroom she was going into and blanched. Wishing to bolt, she turned to dart down the hallway only for B to pick her up before she could. Letting out a silent scream, she struggled as her large father took her into the classroom.

While the other three waited, Forrest and Simon's other sister, Aurora, turned to her brothers. "Do you think my class will have a class pet?" She wondered.

"Considering you've been lucky so far," Forrest started. "I'd say it's a safe bet you will. Are you going to try and bring it home if there is one?" He asked his sister.

"Of course," Aurora smiled. "I'd want our animal friends at home to meet the new friend I'd have."

Her oldest brother raised an eyebrow. "Don't you think you have enough animal friends? Remember what happened when that rainstorm came and you tried to gather all the animals from the backyard in the house so they wouldn't catch a cold?"

Aurora rocked on her heels. "It's called being a good person, Forrest. All my friends are nice and they don't deserve to be out in the rain. Mom and dad didn't mind at all." She replied.

Forrest and Simon shrugged. "Most families usually don't let the animals in their backyard come inside. Every animal has their own little home they can stay in." reminded Forrest.

"I know. The storm was just a bad one and I wanted everyone to be okay.

"That's understandable." Said Simon. "I'm pretty sure Mom did the same thing when she was a kid too."

The middle child of the family was Aurora. Her name was chosen because it sounded the most like aura. While her eyes were like B's, the rest of her appearance resembled Dawn. If her talk about a class pet wasn't obvious enough, Aurora was really into animals and treating them like her own pets. Her mother thought wild animals belonged to nature and Aurora thought so too. She just liked treating the wild animals in her family's backyard as pets. There was no animal that frightened her, she liked them all. Much to her chagrin, she was only eight and that was too young for Dawn to bring her to the Fun Zone on Boney Island. The little girl's dream was to make friends with the mutated inhabitants of the Fun Zone since they were the most unique creatures on the planet due to their exposure and unique traits. Her plan for the future was to get into the same line of work that Dawn did so she can meet those wonderful, odd creatures that her mother speaks of and works with. When it came to animals, there was no use trying to stop her.

Then their parents came out of the classroom with a sour looking Violet. "Thank you, Violet will see you next week." Dawn said farewell to the classroom's teacher while B waved his hand while holding Violet with his other arm.

"Now can we go see my classroom? I want to see if my class will have a pet." Aurora asked her parents.

Dawn looked at B, who nodded his head in agreement. "Alright, let's go to Aurora's room next."

"Yes! Which way is it?"

Forrest quickly spoke before Aurora wouldn't give him any chance to. "Can Simon and I go see if our friends are in the cafeteria? We'll meet up with you later." Simon nodded in agreement with Forrest.

Again, Dawn looked to her husband and they nodded in agreement. B waved his hand as if to say 'go on'. With the permission given, the boys quickly went in the direction of the cafeteria.

After the boys left, Aurora lead the way to her classroom, her parents following her with Violet. The whole walk to the room, Violet did not look pleased.

Violet was the youngest of the siblings at the age of four and the quietest. Like her brother Simon, she had all the features of her mother. Her quietness was not like she had a choice. During her development, her vocal chords failed to develop so she was rendered unable to say a word. The inability to talk didn't deter her too much though. Without a voice she was pretty expressive just by hand gestures and facial expressions. Much like other kids her age, she was very insistent on things. For example, she was insistent on not learning sign language. Her parents knew she needed another way to communicate without her voice so they turned to sign language for her to communicate. To their dismay, Violet refused to learn it and instead preferred to simply use facial expressions and hand gestures like B often used. The other thing she insisted on was being in a normal class, evidenced by her not wanting to be in the special needs class. Little did her parents and her new teacher know she was already hoping to slip out of the class and join another kindergarten class. Other than her being insistent on not getting the special treatment, not much was known about her likes and dislikes.

Finally Aurora stopped in front of a classroom. "This is my classroom." She stated as she pointed to the room number.

The four went in and Aurora's new teacher was just finishing her meeting with another family. As they left, the teacher looked up to see the family members approaching.

"Hi, I'm Miss Lona. Welcome to my classroom." She welcomed them, shaking the hands of B and Dawn.

"Hello, I'm Dawn, this is my husband B, our daughter Violet, and our daughter Aurora. Aurora will be in your class this year."

B nodded in confirmation. He didn't mind Dawn doing all the talking, she even obliged to do it. Few times in his life he chose to speak because it was necessary but other than those times it was not needed because Dawn could merely sense all of his feelings.

Like his wife, B hadn't changed much over the years. He was an entrepreneur/inventor. It was a job which didn't require him to be away from his family too much so he was more than happy to stay home to look after them. His method of communication improved drastically over the years as he was merely able to direct his eyes, mouth, or hands to get his point across. His ability to communicate like so was incredible enough so that his young children could understand him. Numerous ideas he had for inventions or entrepreneur ideas came from his interactions with his family. The majority of the inventions were well-received among the public so the family was well off on the money from those alone. Though highly skilled in the technical field, he had also developed Dawn's fondness for helping animals, caring for them, even simply meditating for a little while. People were surprised by the relationship he shared with people since he was usually silent but it worked for him and that was all that mattered.

"Great, I hope we have a fun-filled year-"

"Class bunny!" Aurora screeched gleefully. Without warning, she scurried over to the cage on the countertop by the back wall where a cage holding a bunny sat. "Hi there, I hope we can be great friends this year. If I get a turn to take you home, I'll introduce you to my friends in the backyard. They'll like you, they're all so nice."

The adults looked from Aurora back to each other. "You'll have to excuse Aurora, she's enthusiastic about animals. It's a family thing." Dawn explained to the teacher.

"I don't mind. Most times the children love the class pet."

"Miss Lona, can I pet him?" Aurora asked.

"Of course, let me just get him out of the cage." Miss Lona answered. The teacher walked over to the cage and opened it, pulling the furry little creature out. "Here you go."

She handed the rabbit to Aurora, who took the bunny with great care. "Thank you! Wow, his fur is so soft. What's his name?"

"His name is Quirk. He seemed like a quirky little guy when I picked him up at the pet shop."

"I like it. Hi, Quirk! My name's Aurora. Everyone else in the class will take care of you too but since I love animals, I'll make extra sure you're taken care of."

"He really seems to like you."

Dawn smiled. "Like I said, it's a family thing. My family always had a way with animals, ever since my great-grandmother."

Miss Lona took back Quirk and put him back in the cage. "You're lucky to be so gifted with animals. Now I'm definitely sure this year will be a great one."

"I'm sure too." Dawn turned to her family. "Come on, let's go get the boys to see their class."

B and Aurora nodded. The four family members said good-bye to Miss Lona then departed from the room. Much to Miss Lona's surprise, Violet came back into the room to try and get a better look at the bunny. Sadly the four year old was too short and B came back in quickly afterwards to retrieve her. Miss Lona giggled as she watched the two leave once more.

Sorry this took so long, I wanted to get the Duncan short series out of the way. Up next, he's the one known for saying 'idiot!'. Until then!
