Chapter 8 –
Ray's POV
Deeply in my heart, I wish the rain would wash away these sinful hands. I couldn't even look at Rex when he was taken away. So much distress and anger toward myself filled my heart. I've done this task more than once, but never have I felt so hurt from it.
I clenched, in my hand, the money I earned for my portion of the task. I walked over and rested next to the abandon warehouse, closing my eyes, wishing the tears would go away.
"Ray?" Drake asked, resting next to me counting his fill, "You're not upset about the evo kid, are you?"
His snickering taunted me as I slowly rose up.
"No," I replied, "Not just Rex, but at myself."
"What the fuck are you going on about? You've done this a million times! Be grateful it wasn't you being shipped off to God knows where."
The money in my hand began to burn, as my abilities began withering away at my hard earn cash. My fingers tightly incased themselves, and before I knew it, Drake was on the ground with a black eye and cash raining down with him.
The punch didn't keep him down for long, he immediately rose up and grab the collar to my shirt, glaring me with his demonic eyes. His horrid breath ran over my face as he tried to make me feel suppressed, but I wouldn't stand down. I quickly placed my sizable hand around his disgusting face and began to burn his face. He let out a scream, releasing my collar and grabbing on to his burnt up greedy mask.
"You piece of shit!" He yelled behind his face.
Other evos appeared completely shocked at my sudden actions. At first, I thought their anger would have them charging at me, but they all held tightly to their cash and backed away slowly.
With Drake kneeling on the pavement, I slowly walked over to him and lifted him from the ground. I grinned and whisper in to his ears, "Thanks for the car…"
Before he could react, his keys were in the palm of my hand and I was already across the parking lot.
"Ray! STOP!" Drake began yelling. I turned around to see him running at me, with the all the energy he had left. He reached backed and pulled one of the grotesque spikes growing from his spine and was preparing to strike.
The rain began to calm and the moonlight began appearing from behind the darkened sky. Drake's burnt up face lit up from the shadows and began crawling its way into my soul. His presence simply wanted to drag me back to hell, but that was no longer an option for me.
I clapped my hands together and rose them into the night sky, generating an orb of fire that lit up the entire block.
Drake's movements slowed down with eyes growing in fear. He collapsed on the ground, covering his face, waiting for the impact.
"What…why…are you doing this?" The spear covered evo hissed.
The fire I generated disappeared into the nightly fog, and a silent sigh escaped my lips, "I'm doing this for a friend…not that you would understand Drake."
"I see…" He mumbled.
I turned around and began walking toward the edge of the parking lot, searching for the maniac's car, when I began to hear a pair of fast pacing footsteps, racing through the flooded ground.
I twisted around, seeing Drake with his hands tightly gripping onto one of his spikes. Jumping through the air ready to strike me, I raised my pointer figure in the shape of a gun. His breath froze behind his teeth as I slightly whispered, "bang."
In a matter of seconds, Drake was engulfed in flames and the only response was a high pitch scream that rang throughout the area.
"PLEASE! MAKE IT STO…!"
The flames disappeared from the scene and his body lied there motionless on the damp pavement. I looked up and noticed his so called allies were gone. And all but silence fell onto the once crowded warehouse.
I continued on my way with one place in mind, Providence. If anyone could help me make up for my mistakes it would be the ones who cared about Rex.
Rex's POV
Dr. Fell chuckled to himself and my frustration continued to rise to drastic levels. It was as if he was laughing at my own powerlessness.
"Sorry to be a disappointment Fell, but I'm not really interested in a job. I just had an interview at Providence." There I go again, making jokes at terrible times.
"Oh my boy, I can't just let you walk out. I'm sure you'll sell for quite a profit once your abilities are amplified. Plus, I've seen your true form. Pure, beautiful power. However, I know you won't crack easily like the other evos," He grinned and placed his hands on my shoulders, "but the more challenging it is, the more fun it'll be!"
I continued to struggle with the cuffs. My stubbornness refused to die down and give up. I looked up again and noticed Dr. Fell giving the signal to the guards to take me away. As the two brutes reached down to lift me from the ground, I continued to fight. Even if it was pointless, there was no way I was going to show defeat to a man like him.
However, one of the men took the butt of his gun and hit me against the back of my head. Everything became a blur and my head began to pound. The words that floated around the room became mumbled and was difficult to focus on.
I fell back to my knees, my whole body giving out. I wanted to reach up and hold on the pain that pulsed in my head, but I was unable to move properly. I felt one of the brutes grab the specially designed cuffs on my hands and lifting me up.
"Rex, the more you….the….painful this will..."
Even with all my energy I had left, I couldn't keep focused, and eventually my conscious faded and everything became dark.
Ray's POV
Driving through the desert with Drake's 2012 Lexus LFA, I noticed I kept accelerating faster and faster. The sun stilled hadn't come up yet, but the sky was already preparing itself for the dawn. My mind was racing through everything I've been through, even the radio couldn't capture my attention. As I noticed the large crack in the earth's crust, I noticed Providence's base resting on the edge, reaching towards the night sky.
As I pulled up, a small group of guards showed up armed, "State your purpose!"
"Relax! I'm a friend of…I mean Rex is in trouble and I need to speak to Agent Six and !" For some reason, I couldn't call myself a friend of Rex's anymore. A traitor to a friend could no longer be called his friend, but I still needed to save him.
One of the guards relaxed, placing his figure over his ear, "Agent Six, an evo has approached the facility. Saying it's an emergency about Rex."
In a few short minutes, Six appeared from the enormous structure, "Ray, we were just about to retrieve you and Rex. Holiday reported Rex's biometrics flat lining. Why isn't he with you?"
There was an awkward silence between us, as I tried to find all my courage to speak.
I took a deep breath, "I made a huge mistake and I'll understand if you never forgive, but Rex's needs our help now."
Six nodded, "You can explain once we're inside. We'll leave immediately to find Rex."
I followed the agent inside, walking past all the armed soldiers. Chills went up my spine as their resemblance to FC's soldiers were extremely similar.
After the few minute walk down to defensive white hallways, we we're in Holiday's lab. I notice how frantic she was. As she dove left and right, from one computer to the next.
"No, no, no, no!" Holiday repeated, "Come on!"
"Holiday…" Six called.
"She's long gone Green Bean." Bobo commented, while laying back in her chair.
Eventually, she did give a quick glance and noticed me standing next to Six, "Ray! Where were you? Where is Rex?"
My face immediately faced toward the floor, "He's been taken by the FC Corporation…and it's all my fault."
"Ray, don't blame yourself…"
"But it is!" I interrupted, "I sold him out! I basically handed him to them on a platter!"
Holiday, Six, and Bobo were quiet. The room almost felt like it stopped and now there was a stage light set on me. They watched me, waiting for me to continue.
Again, I took another deep breath, "I worked for FC."
"What? How-"
"Holiday, let him finish." Six said, cutting off the young doctor.
"My job was to lure evos into a trap, where they would eventually be caged and sent to the FC Corporation. It was how I made enough to survive…"
"And you betrayed Rex…" Holiday mumbled. I looked up as her soften face, turning red with frustration and pure anger. I wouldn't be surprised if I were to die in the next minute.
"I know I made the biggest mistake ever for selling out my friend! But that is why I'm here! To fix my mistake and save his life!" Tears began rolling down my blue, scaly face. I tried to hold it back, but I was to upset with all the sin I have carried. I fell to my knees as if I was begging them for their help, "I don't care if you kill me or lock me up forever, just please help me save him!"
Footsteps began to approach me. I closed my eyes waiting for my punishment, but it never came. A simple hand on my shoulder was all I felt.
I looked up to see Agent Six's darkened sunglasses, "You did the right thing coming to us and the right thing for telling us the truth. We all make mistakes, but only the courageous ones have the guts to confess them."
"As long as you help us save the chief, we forgive you." Bobo replied, "But let's cut all the snappy stuff and let's go kick some butt!"
I quickly wiped my tears away, "Of…of course."
Holiday eventually relaxed and went to her computers, "I'm trying to at least find where Rex is though…I can't get a trace on him. It's as if he simply disappeared."
"Probably from the cuffs that are suppressing his powers." I added.
"Than how do we find the kid if we can't get a pinpoint on him?" The talking chimpanzee asked.
"Wait a minute…" I quickly dropped my bag that I had and pulled out a pair of cuffs that the FC used on me after we fought them out in the Pennsylvania farmlands, "these cuffs have been short circuited by Rex when they were used on me, but I'm guessing it probably has some type of tracking system to keep track of all the evos the FC has captured…"
"Go on…" Six said.
"Is it possible to, I don't know, use reverse tracking?"
"It is possible. We actually might be able to find the point where the trackers are coming from!" Holiday cheered, as she took the cuffs from me, "This may take a bit, but I'll try and find a source."
"So you can do it?" I asked.
"Yeah, but it won't be easy. It's always easy to use forward tracking, rather than reverse, but hopefully we'll find a location and hopefully Rex."
Rex's POV
I awoke, again, in another cage. I slowly rose to my feet and walked over to the bars, noticing that evos filled the hallways, every cell packed. My arms were still tied behind my back and my shoulders felt ready to give out.
I walked slowly back to the wall and slowly fell back to the floor. I hissed slightly as my abdomen continued to burn from the old wound.
I looked down and noticed the old gauze and wrapping were soaked with dried blood. I knew that the wound had reopened and if it wasn't taken care of properly, would probably get an infection.
My mind continued to feel fuzzy and my whole body, just wanted to lie down on the old mattress in the corner and give up, but I knew I couldn't. A fire still burned inside, and I wasn't going to let it go out.
I was startled though, when two soldier appeared in front of my cage and called out to me. My eyes watched them carefully as they slowly unlocked the door.
"Don't try anything funny you little shit, or you'll regret it!" One of the soliders barked.
"Me? Do anything funny? Must have gotten the wrong evo." I responded.
I was suddenly lifted to my feet and was pushed outside the cell, I was walking down the darkened hallway feeling weak from the lack of food and water. It was so bad, until I heard some of the evos mumbling, "he's been chosen…he's next…he's going to turn…"
I glupped, feeling any confidents simply fly away.
They brought me into a large room, filled with heat and smoke. Some blood smears on the ground and a chair that sat in the middle of the room. The soldiers quickly pushed me down and locked my cuffs to the bolted chair.
A young woman soon appeared and brushed her hair back, revealing very pale skin and darkened brown eyes. Her brunette hair was a mess and looked as if she quickly put it in a bun. She walked to the left side of me, rolling up the sleeve, revealing the bare skin of my shoulder.
She grinned, reaching over and grabbing what looked like a branding iron and place it slowly against my shoulder.
I let out a loud scream, trying to fight the pain, but I couldn't. I could feel the heated metal, pressing up against my shoulder. I tried to move away, but the soliders nearby retrained me.
"Feisty, aren't you?" The woman mocked.
She eventually, lifted off the branding iron to reveal a collection of numbers, burned into my skin. The skin felt like it was on fire and I died to stand under a cool rain storm.
I looked over and notice the numbers, 10110 burned on my shoulder. The woman chuckled and began to look at the brand number, "See? It wasn't that bad was it?"
I wanted to make some witty comment, but the pain that stretched across my shoulder made it difficult to talk.
"Trust me evo, this is only the beginning." She said, whispering in my ear.
And that was chapter eight for you all! Hope you enjoyed it! I can't make any promises that the next chapter will be posted right away, but I will try and post it as soon as I can. Thank you for those who have been reading my story. :3
