I softly rubbed her red hair, probably for the last time. I felt tears welling up in my eyes as I looked down at her smiling face.
"Sophia…" I said, finally letting the tears fall. Her health was dropping each second, the poison worked fast. Just as advertised.
"Alex… It's ok…" she said releasing tears of her own. It was silent with the exception of my heavy breathing and the small sounds me trying not to cry even more. I continued to kneel beside her, hoping the poison would wear off before her health drained away. I prayed for that to happen until I thought I would have died myself. But in a game, no. In a death game, no one can hear your prayers.
"Bye, Alex…" There was a beeping noise, and she exploded in a cloud of blue and white pixels, that softly lingered in the air.
"Sophia… Sophia!" My voice echoed through the boss room, the dam holding my tears back collapsed, as did I. I sobbed my eyes out right there, infront of all those people. All of them, watching me, not daring to try to bother me. That's when I realized. This was not just a death game. It was a torture chamber.
Three hours earlier
I laid on my bed, trying to go back to sleep before being rudely interrupted by Victoria. She came into my room talking about some boss, but I never paid any attention to her. I turned away from her and closed my eyes tightly, hoping that she would magically vanish. But no, she kept pestering me.
"You win!" I shouted sitting up. "What in the world could be so important!?" Victoria frowned.
"Weren't you listening to me?" I shook my head in response. She groans and rolls her eyes and sat on my bed next to me. "The boss has been found, the three of us can't take this one alone. We're going to have to go with everyone else." Not that it made too much of a difference on the outcome of the battle, I prefered just us three. Victoria, Sophia and I. Less people to worry about, and I can use my Shadow Skill.
"Alright… When are we going to take it on?" I asked.
"Today," I felt my heart sink into my stomach. Today? "Is there something wrong?" Victoria asked me. I couldn't tell she was concerned or nosey.
"I'm fine," I told her. "Just a bit surprised. Why would fight a boss we know nothing about?" Victoria shrugged and stood up.
"It's what commander Bethara wants us to do. He's never been wrong before."
"Yeah, yeah. When?" I asked, starting to lose my patience.
"In about two hours. See you then," she closed my door and her foot steps retreated. I sighed and plopped myself back in my be and closed my eyes. I've got time… I thought to myself. I laid back down and drifted back into a sleep. Sophia or Victoria would wake me up eventually.
The march to the boss room was tedious. I was position far away from Sophia and Vicky, so I had no one to talk to. But the person next me, named Jordan would not stop talking…
"I hear this boss is large scorpion! He has a long tail and a blade at the end of it, it shoots poison too! A guild tried to fight it, but failed…." The tall curly haired boy continued to talk without breaks. Like a motor boat going for miles. After a few more life-stories from Jordan, we finally made it to the boss room. The doors were large and had carvings of a scorpion on them. Jordan was right… I thought. Bethara pushed the doors open and readied his sword. Inside, a large scorpion rested with it's tail arched over it's back. It's orange and rugged skin glimmered when the doors open. The spikes on it's side were small, but sharp. And to top it off, large 10 feet claws that can reach out.
"This is it…" I heard someone whisper next to me. The large scorpion stood on it's crab like legs, and opened it's red eyes. I groaned and pulled out my sword, waiting for someone else to charge first.
"Charge!" Bethara shouted, and everyone ran in, swords up, and spirits high.
The first one to land a hit was Jordan, jumping ahead with his light sword. Soon after, it became a free for all, anyone just trying to hit the beast as much as they can, hoping it'd chip some health away. As I somehow drifted to the back, I realized I could actually move closer if I wanted to, with my shadow skills and all. But I haven't jumped in a while, not sure if I could focus enough to go exactly where I wanted. I looked back up towards the scorpion, and what was at least 50 people, was now at least 30. Where did everyone go? I decided to get closer, and trying to avoid jumping there. So I ran up past everyone, dodging the claws of the scorpion and jumping to it's eye level. After a few second stare down, I slashed at it, causing it squeal loudly. The tail that arched over it's back, shot at me quickly. I was barely able to block it, and land back on my feet. Its large mouth opened, and yellow liquid shot out, barely missing me. I ran away, running past Victoria, not even giving her a second glance. I turned back, once the poison stopped spraying out, I ran back for more, my sword giving an ominous dark glow. I overlooked it, and swung at his legs. The squeal from the scorpion shook the cave. it stumbled back a bit. The people behind it moved away quickly, hoping not to be crushed by the large scorpion. But I noticed one person didn't move, a small girl with red hair stood in shock and awe as the scorpion tipped over and fell upon her. Took me a while to realize, that girl was Sophia. The scorpion disappeared in a flutter of shapes and left Sophia on the ground, almost crushed.
"Sophie!" I shouted. I rushed over to her and kneeled beside her. Her smile was faint, and broken, and her health was falling low. I had no more potions, nothing to help her.
"Alex…" She whispered in pain. I softly rubbed her red hair, probably for the last time. I felt tears welling up in my eyes as I looked down at her smiling face.
"Sophia…" I said, finally letting the tears fall. Her health was dropping each second, the poison worked fast. Just as advertised.
