Chapter 7: Click
Viki backed towards the open doors of the dining room, keeping her eyes on Zenith and the crystal in her hand. She didn't want to take her eyes off of the Goblin King, more because she didn't trust him than because of his handsome features, though she had to admit, he was pretty hot.
"thanks." She said, feeling that, evil Goblin King or not, it would be rude to leave without at least thanking him for the food.
"You're welcome." Zenith said with a grin that was more of a smirk than a smile.
Viki returned his smile and was about to let out a nervous laugh, when she backed into a wall. She turned around to see where the door was in relation to her to see the plain white painted wall of her dorm in place of the beautiful tapestry covered stone wall of the castle. She turned around to find herself alone in her dorm room. Had it not been for the smooth, round crystal she held in her hand she would have wondered if she really had been to the Goblin King's Castle. She put the crystal on her desk then sat down on her bed to think over what had just happened.
Jareth wasn't king anymore. The Goblin King was a man in his early twenties (or at least he looked like he was in his early twenties) named Zenith. He looked like how her parents had described Jareth, but his eyes looked more power hungry and…. Inexperienced. Like he had Jareth's power, but not the wisdom that came with age. But something else didn't make sense. If Zenith now ruled the Labyrinth, what happened to Jareth? Did her parents get the story wrong? She tried to think where they got the story from. She thought back to when she was in first grade and trying to learn how to read.
Little Viki sat on the couch next to her father, he feet just over the edge of the seat cushions. She was holding the reading book her teacher had given her for the year. It was filled with stories and the little girl was trying to read one to her father. Every time she came across a word she didn't know he would say it out loud and she would repeat it and slowly, she read the entire story to him. She tried to read it the same way he told her stories, making the story come to life.
She finished the story and looked sadly down at the reading book.
"That was very good Viki." Her father told her, "You're becoming quite the little storyteller."
"I guess." She said, looking at the book, "but I wish it was more exciting like the story you and mommy tell me."
Her father looked at the young girl, and then he got an idea. "Would you like to help me tell the Labyrinth story to Marie?" he asked.
Little Viki looked at the white cat plushy that sat on the couch next to her. "But I don't know the story that well." She said, grabbing the cat and hugging it.
Her father chuckled as he got up off the couch and to the bookshelves that stood on either side of the TV. "That's why you are going to read it, sweetie." He said, pulling a worn red book with 'Labyrinth' printed on the cover in faded gold lettering. He handed the book to the little girl. "Now be very careful with it." He said, "It was your mother's favorite book."
The little girl carefully opened the book up and looked at the page, a look of confusion on her face. "Why do the sentences look funny?" she asked, unable to make heads or tails of how to read the page.
Her father chuckled and sat next to his daughter. "That's because it's a script for a play." He said, "how about I'll be the evil Goblin King Jareth and you can be the beautiful and brave princess?"
"Ok!" Little Viki smiled, and carefully read the lines that her father pointed out to her and they went through the entire play with Marie the cat playing the part of the kidnapped baby and her father using various other stuffed animals to play the part of the goblins.
Viki watched the memory play out in her head. Then she remembered all the times both her parents had told the story, acting it out for her and her toys, mom playing the part of the brave Princess Victoria while dad played the part of King Jareth. They had gotten the story out of a book. But something else was there, something that was on the edge of her mind. Frustrated, Viki opened her eyes and stared at the wall. It was covered in posters from her dad's plays. Her favorite one was posted right by her head, it was from a play her dad had written called Ice Princess. Viki stared at the poster studying it, when her gaze got to the bottom of the page where the lead performers' and director's names were. She sat up and looked at the 'Directed By' line at the top of the block of words.
It said "Directed By: Jareth Williams"
Viki's mind was racing. Williams was her mother's maiden name. She never knew her father's original last name. She also had never met her paternal grandparents. Come to think of it, there weren't any family photos of her paternal grandparents. No one in her family had ever met her father's parents. She had never seen any photos of her father before he and mom started dating three years before she was born. Her father had this look of incredible wisdom that only comes with age in his eyes, and he had never aged her entire life. He played the role of the Goblin King like he once was Jareth the Goblin King from the play.
And his name was Jareth.
Viki's eyes widened when it clicked.
Her father wasn't just a drama instructor with a flair for fantasy plays; he once lived in a fantasy play.
Her father was the old Goblin King.
So what did you think? i'm going to try to update the story more often. I apologize if there are annoying grammatical errors. i'm trying to do three things at once at the moment and I don't want to add spell check to the list.
Please leave a comment in the little box... assuming one of the goblins didn't run away with it.
