My first thought the minute I started flying? "I'm going to die." That was the one thing I kept screaming in my head as I flew into the sky. That, and the reminder to keep looking up instead of at the ground. Not looking at the ground wasn't that hard considering I had my eyes shut tight. Even though I told myself I was going to keep my eyes open, the higher Barf and Belch flew made keeping my eyes shut a much better idea.
"Ok…ok I need to open my eyes if I want to control this dragon." I told myself. A shiver went up my spine at the thought of opening my eyes.
"Enya, you were the one that wanted to ride a dragon." A voice in the back of my head told me.
"Yeah, and now that seems like a big mistake." I argued back, feeling like an idiot for arguing with myself.
"Just open your eyes! It's not that hard." the voice in my argued. I bit my bottom lip, drew in a shaky breath, and slowly opened my eyes. At first I just squinted but then my eyes widened. Barf and Belch had finally stopped flying towards the sky and were now gliding above a straight line of snow white clouds while an endless light blue sky hung around me.
"So this is what the others get to see every day?" I sighed. My eyes wondered down to the clouds that were below me. They looked so soft and full that I felt like I could jump down and land safely on top of them. It made me forget about my fear for a little while.
"This is actually pretty fun," I laughed "and it's really relaxing and peaceful up here." I scooted myself back a little bit until I was in the center the Barf and Belch's back. I lied down on my back, straightened out my legs, and crossed my arms behind my head.
"I should have brought my sketchbook with me." I sighed "Hmm…maybe the next time the twins get in trouble, I can bring you guys back up here."
I stayed like that for a few more minutes before sitting back up. I decided it was time I got back to the ground, especially since the twins probably noticed by now that their dragon is gone.
"Now I just need to figure out how to land…" I muttered. I tried to remember how the twins landed Barf and Belch, but my mind came up blank. Normally, the twins would guide Barf and Belch using the two long horns on the sides of Barf and Belch's head, but to get to those horns I would have to climb on their necks to get to their horns and I wasn't ready to die just yet. I scratched the back on my head, trying to get an idea into my head. My hand bumped against the leather strap I used to keep my ponytail in place. My eyes widened and I started to undo the knot in the strap. When it was fully undone, I pulled the strap out of my hair and crawled over to where the necks separate. I started trying to get strap to go under at least one of the necks so I could pull them in the right direction, but the wind kept blowing the strap away. I know it was probably a stupid plan, but I was willing to do anything to get back on the ground. Especially when I started to think about what my dad would do when he realized what I was doing.
I let out an annoyed sigh as I struggled to get my plan to work. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew from behind me and the strap snapped out of my hand.
"No!" I shouted as I tried to grab it, but the wind carried it away. When the wind stopped blowing, it started to fall to the ground and that's when I made my mistake. I watched it fall. I noticed immediately as I watched my leather strap fall that there were no longer any clouds blocking my view from the ground. The ground that was at least 2,000 feet away from me. I began to get a sick feeling in my stomach, like I had swallowed a week old trout that had been sitting out in the sun for too long. My hands started to shake and I started to feel dizzy. I closed my eyes and turned away. I started hearing people shouting. Someone was shouting and someone else was screaming. I opened my eyes and I was in the air, but Barf and Belch wasn't with me anymore. I quickly realized I was falling. I turned in the air and saw a huge gray dragon with three eyes on each side of its head below me. The Red Death. The dragon's mouth was open and I was racing towards it. I let out an ear-piercing scream and suddenly I was back on Barf and Belch. My scream must have scared them since they started having a freak out. Their heads bumped into other as they tried to go in opposite directions in their panic and they started snapping at each other, causing even more chaos.
"No guys!" I shouted at them "Please calm down!" They ignored me and began trying to actually bite each other's neck. They began to do a nose-dive towards the ocean. I quickly closed my eyes as I started to fall forward. Barf and Belch suddenly made a sharp turn upward and I had to grab onto one of the red lobes on their back to avoid falling off.
"Guys!" I shouted again, but they ignored me. They made another sharp turn, this time causing me to lose my grip on the lobe and fall off their back. My vision became blurry after that. The only thing I remember is a lot of screaming, a hard yank on the collar of my shirt, and Snotlout yelling at me to shut up.
Hey guys, I'm really sorry for not updating at all the last two months. I've started school again and I'm in 3 honors classes and the amount of work and homework I have is crazy so I haven't been able to work on this story much. But I'm trying to write as much as I can! So, the updates are going to be a little slower than usual, but they will happen :)
