I still could not quite comprehend what she was saying. "So, they know that she's here? How long have they been trying to get her out?" I asked.
"Ever since Father disappeared. I think The Nightingale has something to do with his disappearance."
"How? She's underneath the house. She's powerless . . . right?"
Sapphire just shrugged. "Honestly I have no clue. I don't go out of my way to see her. I want nothing to do with her."
"She's living under your home and her daughters are attacking your town trying to get to her." The Spook said. "You better start caring about this, girl."
"I can't fight all six of them on my own. They're too strong. The best I can do is keep the Nightingale here, hiding where no one can get to her."
Alice walked up to Sapphire and put her hand on the young spook's shoulder. "You have us now. We'll help you anyway we can"
A small smile came to Sapphire's face. "In that case, I will need your help with the barrier." She looked over at me. "You too, Tom."
She brought us through her room and through the second door in her room. I visibly shivered. The cold reached deep into my bones in this small space. The dark space seemed to go on forever as we walked down a steep slope.
"Are you sure this is safe?" I asked Sapphire.
"Nope." She said smiling at me. "But she's bound. There isn't much she can do."
We finally reached the pit the Nightingale was stuck in. We could hear her loud wheezing as she struggled to breath. As we got closer to the pit the witch sniffed loudly.
"Sapphire. Come to pour more salt on me, my dear?" Her voice was sharp like nails on a chalkboard.
"You almost sound like you're looking forward to it."
"It's the only form of feeling I get these days. Ever since your father left . . . "
"Shut up!" Sapphire went to grab some salt and iron barrels that stood in the corner of the small space. "Come help me with this."
"Ah. That is young Thomas Ward . . . and another witch. Both could be useful to me. Thank you for bringing them here to town Sapphire."
"I didn't bring them here. Your daughters did."
"You shouldn't be telling her anything!" I hissed at Sapphire. "She can use this to her advantage."
"She already knows who brought you here. She's not stupid."
We worked on opening the barrels and pouring the salt around the pit. During that time The Nightingale was still talking with us, trying to get into our heads.
"Oh, little Alice. Such a horrible childhood. Do you want the pain to end? I can make it end for you."
"You're pathetic." Sapphire threw some salt down the pit and the witch screamed in pain.
I looked at her in shock. "That's torture."
"You heard her. Apparently she enjoys it."
We finished the barrier and started to make our way to the inn. "Thomas, wait!" Nightingale hissed. "Beware those closest to you . . . My daughters are everywhere. Even right in this inn. All seven of them-"
"What are you talking about? There are only six of them!"
"Oh no, young Spook. I have seven daughters. I am a seventh daughter. Beware her. She shall be the one to take your heart and bring me back. I want you to make a good fight out of it."
"She's crazy, Tom." Sapphire pulled me away. "Just ignore her."
"There's seven of them?" Alice whispered. "Where is the seventh daughter?"
"There's no need to worry about it. If she hasn't come now she probably never will. Just get it out of your head and ignore her." There was a tinge of menace in Sapphire's tone.
What is she hiding?
