Shane POV-
I should have told her, shouldn't I? I mean, it wasn't my fault, no it was, it was my fault. It's always my fault. I can't do this anymore. I've lived for so long in guilt, I have to do something. Anything. Yeah, I'll sort it out tonight, when Claire's asleep.
Claire POV-
"The last box!" I exclaimed. "Finally!" I glanced over at Shane, he seemed to be fine now, but I could tell that something was bothering him, even though he was acting normal just looking into his eyes, he didn't seem at peace. I should try to get him to open up, I thought, though Shane wasn't the one to talk easily, maybe moving away was the first step into us becoming closer, being able to open up to each other. I hope so, I can't live a life where Shane couldn't talk to me. Secrets ruin the most strongest of relationships and ours definitely wasn't. We had been through a lot and a lot of it had burned us.
"I don't see why we have to unpack everything anyway," Shane moaned.
"As much as your male instincts call for you to live in a tip, I would rather live in a nice clean apartment!" I explained, throwing the last empty box at him. I enjoyed it when it was just Shane and I; we just fit together even though some people would say that we're nowhere near alike, everything was so simple and we didn't have to work hard to be around each other.
"Well, we can't afford to live in this apartment anyway; I know that Amelie sorted out the deposit but we probably can't even afford the first month's rent so we're not going to be here that long," Shane moaned. I felt so guilty, I knew that I had to tell him about Amelie paying the first two months of rent, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. He overreacted so much last time; I would have to do it gently, preferably not at all.
"Well, maybe, just maybe I can talk to Amelie and see if she will pay some of the rent while we settle in," if he agreed to it, then I could just pretend that I've talked to her, she gave me the money and this will all be sorted. Easy and simple.
"No! I am not accepting any help from her! This is OUR fresh start away from there, we don't need her. Even if we have to live in a smaller and less fancier flat I am not accepting her filthy money!" Shane shouted. Immediately his body language tensed up. His jaw was clenched, his shoulders looked tight and his hands were hard fists. He looked ready to fight on the defensive, as if Amelie's money was causing a real threat to us. Oh no, this isn't going well, I need to calm him down, maybe try to persuade him.
"Shane calm down, it was just a suggestion. Listen, maybe you just need to suck up your pride! We are going to struggle with the money. Yes, we know that, but we don't have to make it any harder for ourselves. We can ask Amelie for a few months rent whilst we search for another place!" maybe this would make more sense to him. If he doesn't listen to me, things are going to get bad. "Look, she owes us; we've spent years trapped in there! The crap that we've been through, it'll just be like compensation. Please Shane! Or even if you don't want to ask her, I've always got the card!" whilst trying to sound logical I spilled out that secret. I gasped in shock, how on Earth did that come out! He didn't know about the card that Amelie gave me, oh no! My eyes widened, what had I done?
"What card?" he asked slowly.
"Look I didn't want to tell you, you would just freak out! Listen, when Amelie called me to that meeting, she gave me that envelope right?" I asked, jogging his memory.
"Yes..." Shane said, with his teeth gritted.
"Well, I showed you that envelope, I didn't take out anything, so what was in there?" I asked, maybe if he remembered then I could claim that I didn't keep it a secret, I mean it was right there in front of his face. He was the one that started the argument then never checked to see if there was anything else in the envelope. Not my fault, nope.
"There was the paper," Shane replied, his face scrunched up in concentration, maybe some anger as well, yep he was definitely angry. "Nothing else that I can remember, but I'm assuming that there was, right?" he asked.
"There was a debit card in there. She had put on $3000 and she said that she would be sending money in there every month, Shane listen; I know that you don't like it, you don't have to! She just wants to help, in her own weird way. I wouldn't have taken it except I knew that moving here would mean that money was tight. I didn't want to burden you with money problems," I said. There, it was out, I wouldn't have to keep that secret anymore. There had been so many times where I had almost been caught out.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked. I shrugged my shoulders, I didn't want him to know that I didn't really trust him to not go to Amelie and freak out, resulting in his ass in jail, or worse!
"There must have been a reason," he pressed. I just simply shrugged my shoulders again.
"Come on," he pestered. "Tell me," he sighed. "Look, you always say that we should talk to each other instead of bottling it in, now please tell me why," she asked. I shrugged then deeply sighed.
"It's complicated," I said. "Please don't be mad but, I was worried. I mean I knew that you weren't going to take it well, I didn't know what you're reaction was going to be, or if you would go to Amelie and blow up in her face," I spurted out, I glanced over at Shanes face to check his reaction, it didn't look good.
"So, you didn't trust me? That's what it was, not cool Claire!" he was almost on the verge of shouting, I knew he wasn't going to take it well, why did I even tell him? My rage was reaching the limit, we had just moved away from Morganville! We should be celebrating not arguing!"You're the one that wanted to know!" I shouted back. "So stop twisting this all around on me!" I screamed.
"Twisting it on you?!" Shane screamed, he then stood up and walked out, slamming the door behind him. The door made a horrible noise which made me jump. Why oh why did I scream at him? He was all upset over his sister and Olivia and I just went piled more troubles on top of him.
I was in a new city, all alone and my boyfriend was somewhere out there in the cold and dark mad at me. Great, I thought. Could this night get any worse?
