Chapter 9: A princess in paradise

The next morning, Rose woke up early. She got up and walked to the wardrobe. Trudy, her maid, was still sleeping, or maybe dressing, she thought. So she decided to dress herself. She chose a beautiful light yellow dress for today. When she walked back to her bed, she noticed a note on the little table in her room. Was it a note from Cal? She hang the dress over a chair and picked the note up.

Dear Rose,

I'm sorry to tell you this, but I couldn't take it any longer. I committed suicide. Don't be sad, I am happy now.

Love, Eva

Rose's whole body was in shock. Suicide? Eva? She grabbed the chair and put her other hand on her head. This is impossible! She read the note again. 'I committed suicide…', Rose read again. Tears filled her eyes. 'No… Eva… NO!'
She couldn't control her breath anymore and tears kept streaming down her face.
'Eva… Eva… she's… dead… No! This is a joke, just a sick joke… She only wants to scare me…', she knew she was lying to herself. She collapsed to the ground and cried.
'Miss Rose, time to- MISS ROSE!', Trudy yelled when she came in. She ran towards the crying girl. Rose was like a daughter to her. Trudy sat down next to her. Rose wasn't able to say anything, so Trudy softly took the note out of her hand and read it.
'Oh miss Rose! I'm so sorry! Miss van de Berg must have been very unhappy…', Trudy hugged her.
Cal came in. 'What is going on here? Rose? Oh why are you crying again…', he said, irritated.
'Miss van de Berg is dead, Mr. Hockley'
'What?! But she was my brothers fiancé! This can't be true! She is a healthy young lady. And also a pretty one… ', he said, his voice was still cold.
'It was suicide, sir.', Trudy answered.
'What?! This is unacceptable! If my brother had been here that wouldn't have happened! Where can I find her parents? I have to talk to them. NOW!'
'Cal… You bastard!', Rose said, 'she is dead because of that brother of yours! She didn't want to marry him and you know that! It's all his fault!'
'I think we should visit her parents first, maybe they don't even know about it…', Trudy said, still holding Rose.
'No… no…', Rose whispered.
'I'm going to find her parents.', Cal said and he left the room.
'No…', Rose kept whispering.
'Shh miss Rose, It'll be alright… Let's get dressed. I see you've already picked a dress.', Trudy said, trying to comfort her.
'I have… to find… F-Fabrizio.', she suddenly realized. She ran away, still wearing her night dress, but she tripped and fell again.
'Miss Rose! Come, you can't leave like this. I'll help you up.'
No, Rose thought, Fabrizio has to know this right now! She stood up, grabbed her coat and ran out of the cabin. Some first class men an woman looked at her strangely, as she was trying to put her coat on. When she arrived at the elevator she yelled: 'E-deck!'
'Eh… I'm sorry miss, can you go back to your room and dress yourself?'
'No! I have to get down! Now!'
'I'm not going to take you anywhere if you're wearing just a night dress and coat miss.'
'DAMNIT! I SAID TAKE ME DOWN!', Rose screamed.
The officer did as he was told now and as soon as they arrived on E-deck, Rose jumped out. G-60, Rose thought. She has been there once, but that was with Eva. Would Fabrizio and Jack be awake? She ran towards the room and knocked on the door. No reply. Damnit, Rose thought.
'Fabrizio! Jack!', she yelled. Still no reply.
'JACK! FABRIZIO!', she screamed, louder this time. Please hear me, Rose thought. They had heard her, Jack opened the door.
'What are you doing here? Woah… Why are you wearing… that?', Jack felt awkward.
'No time to explain. Can I come in?'
'Sure…'
Rose walked to Fabrizio's bunk. 'Wake up Fabrizio!', she said. It didn't work. Jack grabbed his pillow and threw it to him.
'FABRI! WAKE UP!', he said.
'W-what?', Fabrizio woke up.
'I have to tell you something, Fabrizio…', Rose said slowly.
'Huh…', he turned around, 'Tell me later, I wanna sleep.'
'It's about… Eva…', her voice was full of sadness. Fabrizio got out of his bunk immediately and looked at Rose.
'What's wrong with her?', he was completely focused now.
'She… she…', Rose tried. Jack sat next to her and put an arm around her. He kissed her forehead. She felt tears coming up again and started to cry.
'Eva… is dead.', she cried.
Both Fabrizio and Jack were shocked.
'WHAT?! HOW?!', Jack said. Fabrizio just stared into space. This couldn't be true, he thought.
'She… she left a note in my room. She committed suicide. I had to tell you immediately.', Rose explained.
Fabrizio wasn't able to say anything. This was impossible. His Eva? She couldn't have left him alone! She would never do such a thing! Jack looked at Fabrizio. He put an arm around him, trying to support him.
'I'm so sorry, Fabrizio.', he said.
'She isn't dead.', Fabrizio whispered.
'What?', Jack said, he didn't understand him.
'She isn't dead!', he yelled.
He walked away. He was determined to find her. She wasn't dead, he knew that. Rose ran after Fabrizio and showed him the note. Fabrizio couldn't read, so that little piece of paper meant nothing to him. Jack walked after Fabrizio as well and he grabed his arm.
'Fabrizio listen! She is dead. She wrote it herself. I know it's hard but she isn't coming back!', Jack yelled to him.
He was also in tears because he couldn't bear seeing his best friend like this. 'Eva isn't dead. She isn't. We will be together forever and I'll marry her and we will have kids and then, when she is very old, she'll die. I am going to make her happy! SHE ISN'T DEAD!', he fell down on the ground.
When Jack sat down next to him, he tried to punch Jack, so Jack stood up again.
'I'm going to tell Tommy, he deserves to know this too. He knew Eva only a little, but still.', he said.
'No! Jack! Don't tell Tommy! Tommy is in love with her as well…', Fabrizio said sadly.
Jack was surprised. He didn't know that.
'Still,', he said, 'Tommy has to know this too.'
He left to find Tommy's cabin.
Now Rose and Fabrizio were sitting in the cabin alone, both still in shock. They didn't talk to each other, they just thought about what had happened.
'I loved her so much…', Fabrizio said.
Rose didn't know what to do or say, she couldn't hug him right? He would think I'm in love with him then, wouldn't he, Rose thought.
'Fabrizio…', she said with her caring voice.
Fabrizio smiled and carefully put an arm around Rose, not that he liked her, but just for support.
'Thank you, Rose.', he whispered.
Rose just smiled and for a second, Fabrizio felt like Eva was back again, but of course she wasn't.

Meanwhile Jack had told Tommy about what had happened. He didn't cry, but walked away, leaving Jack alone. Jack didn't follow him, but went back to his cabin instead. Tommy was completely in shock and walked to… to where actually? He just had to leave everything for a moment, but that was impossible on a ship like this. Every rivet in the Titanic reminded him of Eva right now and he was unable to stop it. He knew Eva's life wasn't as good as it looked like, but he never would have thought Eva would commit suicide. Somehow, he felt like he wanted to leave this world to, but his true feelings stopped him. Even though Tommy missed her, he also had a lot of questions; how did she commit suicide? Is her body still somewhere on this ship? Tommy wanted to know, maybe it could comfort him a little. But he didn't know the answer.

Back in cabin G-60, Jack, Rose and Fabrizio were sitting next to each other, in silence. Fabrizio looked at the white walls and the bunks in his room. Why, he thought, why does this happen to me? Why did she have done this? She knew I love her, right? Fabrizio suddenly stood up. 'It's my fault.', he said and he left the room.

Tommy was still wandering through the corridors. Somehow he had ended up close to Eva's cabin. He walked to the door and put his hand on it. 'Eva… After you left this room, where did you go?'
He looked to the floor, but of course there weren't any traces. 'DAMNIT!', he slammed his fist on the door and he heard someone from inside coming to the door.
He ran away to the deck and looked at the sea. He imagined Eva standing by his side. It was a strange feeling, but somehow he knew she was there. He turned around and looked at the other people on the ship, which were mostly parents with their children. 'Tommy!', he heard from his right side. Cora ran towards him. 'Oh hello Cora…', Tommy said, trying to hide his sadness from this innocent child.
'What's wrong?', Cora asked, noticing the sadness.
'You know that princess? The one with the long brown hair?', Tommy said, trying to make Cora understand who he meant.
'Yes! Fabrizio's Princess!', the little girl giggled, 'She is sooooo pretty!'
'She sure is…', Tommy looked up at the sky, somehow trying to look at Eva.
'But what's wrong with you then?', Cora asked.
'I was in love with that princess…', Tommy said.
'Oh…', Cora said, 'She likes you too! I'm sure! Because you're the nicest guy I know!'
'She is gone, Cora…'
'Where did she go?'
Tommy couldn't control his tears anymore and started to cry. He pointed up to the sky and said: 'She's in paradise now..'
Cora's eyes widened, she understood what had happened. 'I'm sorry Tommy..'
She hugged him and Tommy cried. Then Cora started to cry too and Tommy smiled, Cora was such a sweet little girl.
