Son of Fire
Chapter 9
Percy's POV
Not anymore
It was night time, and everyone was sleeping soundlessly except for Danny and I. I waited until I was positive that all of the younger kids were sleeping to ask my question to Danny.
"So, when do you think we should escape?" I asked.
He looked at me comically. "What do you mean, 'when'. Whenever we can." he replied.
I chose my word differently this time. "What time would the guard of this city be down and the kids less tired?"
His face showed that he understood now. "Well, from what I can tell, we should go at daybreak, because we are recovering from our work on the farm. And the security here isn't great. It's not even good for that matter. But they do have lots of tranquilizers. It won't kill you but it does make you fall unconscious."
I took in this new information, and started forming a plan in my head.
"Can any of you fight?" I questioned.
He looked at me as if I had grown a second head. "Of coarse not. We're people, not demons."
I looked at him sadly. "In the world we live in today, fighting is the only thing going to save you from slavery."
Then he surprised me. He didn't look at me with not with confusion, or with a look showing that he wanted to learn.
No.
He looked at me with sympathy. "You are wrong, my friend. I'll be dammed before I let anyone in my family-" As he said this, he pointed to each individual in the room. "experience the cruelty that is known as fighting. You might think you are strong. Brave. Even wise. But fighting is not this. It is cruelty. And the world we live in today will trick you into fighting, but you must find a different way to go about. You must see compassion. You must see that your opponent is not an emotionless piece of meat. You must realize that everybody has a life. Everyone has a family waiting for them to come home unharmed." He finished his speech.
I looked at him with shock.
Then down to my hands, who have taken the life of many, and maimed even more. I looked back at Danny as he put his hand on my shoulder, as he had seen my actions.
He spoke again "My eyes have seen many hardships, as I see yours have. I see my words bring much anguish to you, but that was not my intention, my young friend. I only wish for you to not try to make us fight. And I will not judge you from your past, for that is all it is and will ever be; your past. So do not lose your strength. Strength comes in more ways than just brute strength." He looked at me, and I him.
I let a bitter laugh escape my mouth.
"I wish that I was as strong as you to still have that moral in this world. But sadly, it has been taken from me the moment I opened my eyes. My path is leads to death and misery, and I can only walk it as I lose bits of my soul as I go. But make no mistake, your words have and will affect my future actions." He nodded slowly as if he understood my ordeal.
Then I remembered something he had said earlier. "You are wrong in one part of your philosophy"
He looked at me quizzically.
I continued. "You said that everyone has a life. A family. Well I don't. I haven't had a family in a while. I've had to be alone for the longest time. No one to watch my back, and no one to care about..." I finished, my voice breaking at the end.
For the second time that night, I felt a Danny's hand on my shoulder.
"Not anymore..."
