Chapter Nine
Darkness filled the back of his vision as spots danced around his eyes. Beast Boy reached his hand out to swat them away but the colors only swarmed, filling every part of his sight. Something heavy lifted from his chest and he took a large breath…in…and out…
What happened… where am I…
Beast Boy felt his eyes refuse to open, but his senses were slowly returning back to his body. He could feel the grass nipping at his fingers and he closed his hands around a few blades, pulling from the ground and feeling the dirt spray up against his side.
I'm alive…and…Raven…she was knocked out too…and…
Beast Boy felt a rush of sudden adrenaline hit his body and he suddenly sat up, eyes snapping open. Colors flooded in his vision and he blinked them away, seeing the same forest he was in a moment before he was knocked out. Glancing around he immediately noticed his hands weren't tied and the people who had appeared were long gone.
Shaking his head he grabbed his forehead and sighed, waiting for the world to finish spinning. His throat seared and he swallowed a couple globs of spit, wishing he had bottled water to drink just about now…and a nice hot shower… and some food. Beast Boy groaned inwardly, stretching his back and feeling his neck crack at the end. Wishing he was just back at the tower where everything was normal…
"You're awake."
Beast Boy's head snapped up, a shadow descending farther along near the tree line, crouched at the edge of the bark.
Getting to his feet Beast Boy took a few shaky steps until he found his way toward the shadowed figure against the tree. Surprise soared throughout his body seeing the figures face.
"Xian."
Xian glanced up, and Beast Boy noticed a large cut underneath his left eye. A bruise laced around his neck and his hands were neatly tied behind his back, attached to the rope that wrapped around the tree. His feet were also bound. Beast Boy glanced at the blue haired outcast with curiosity.
"They tied you up…"
Xian's features dimmed, "well, no shit Sherlock, now would you mind to help..." he paused as he struggled to free the bonds with no avail, "get these things off me!"
Beast Boy watched him for a moment, I wonder if I should just leave him here…I mean what good has he done for us? Yet again…he did save my life…maybe I owe him…
He felt his hot stare against him as Beast Boy thought it over. Glancing toward him and his restraints he felt a bit of pity well in his stomach remembering the last words that were spoken before he was knocked out cold. The little boy in rags and the woman that knocked him out filled his mind.
"Why were you betrayed? What's going on Xian?"
Xian stared at him for a moment, surprised laced in his eyes, "Never took you to be serious kid." He smirked then continued when Beast Boy frowned. He sighed and closed his eyes, "They didn't want me interfering…with his plans."
"Whose plans?"
Xian glanced up toward him again, "My master."
"What is he planning to do…what does he want with Raven?"
Xian smiled and shook his head, "that's beyond you little Titan. I'm afraid that's all I can say."
Beast Boy felt frustration boil inside, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"Language…language…my you are getting angry aren't you? But anger won't solve your problem will it? Raven is still in danger and here you are interrogating little ole me. Is that really the smart decision?"
Beast Boy growled and smiled, "You're right. I'll just leave you to rot, I am wasting time."
Looking around Beast Boy felt a wave of uncertainty hit his senses as he glanced around for Raven's backpack. Noticing the purple straps near a thorn bush he walked over and bent down to retrieve it. Opening up the pack he noticed fresh supplies of health medication, food and various objects lay inside including a small dagger that sat at the bottom. Closing the flap he threw it over his shoulders, feeling the weight slide nicely over his back.
"Do you know where you are even going Beast Boy?"
Beast Boy halted in his tracks and glanced at the ground as Xian continued, "I know this forest very well…like the back of my hand…and you...well you have already proved your ignorance more than once." He laughed where he sat, "the forest will eat you alive before you reach your teammate."
Beast Boy felt around inside his pocket and grabbed the familiar yellow round device. Lifting it up Beast Boy opened the communicator with a click. He looked through the contacts before landing on the name: Raven.
"That won't work you know." Xian called, Beast Boy spared a glance but ignored him, pushing the button and quickly receiving a faint buzzing of static, telling him her communicator was either destroyed or out of range; Either a good candidate for the moment.
"Did you find anything useful?" Xian called with a laugh. Beast Boy shut the communicator and sighed; he glanced toward Xian and turned around, slowly walking in his direction. He held a smirk as he neared and Beast Boy felt uncertainty waver inside him. Was this a good idea? Did he have any other choice?
If I don't set him free then I may not find Raven in time. I don't know these woods…I don't know her home at all…I hate to think this…but I need him if I'm to find her again.
Stopping a few inches away from Xian, he looked at the bondage's then spoke, "How long was it…since I was knocked out?"
Xian glanced at him then toward the sky, "A few hours I suppose…why does that matter? You're wasting time again Beast Boy."
Beast Boy frowned, "I'm not going to help you… unless you help me."
Xian frowned in return, "What do you mean?"
"I will only free you if you take me to where Raven is."
Xian smiled, "What? Do you think so lowly of me Beast Boy? I am no threat." He wiggled under the restraints. "I only put Raven's life as best interest, yes?"
Beast Boy strode forward and taking his left hand he narrowed his eyes, transforming into a tiger he lashed out- slicing the bonds on his legs then again at the tree where his hands were tied, freeing him from his feet and the bark.
Xian quickly stood, rubbing down his sore wrists that had turned a rose red.
"Ah, much better…" Xian replied, stretched before watching Beast Boy return to his normal self.
Beast Boy adjusted the strap to the back pack, noting that he shouldn't turn into anything too large with it on, or it will split in two. He looked back toward Xian, "You're free. So you must keep the deal."
Xian's eyes gazed toward him with an eerie blue, "Ah, of course. But time is of essence and we must leave immediately if we don't want it to get away from us too quickly."
Beast Boy nodded, "Look, Raven isn't exactly the damsel in distress; she can take care of herself…but the sooner the better would be great…"
Or I hope she can…Please be alright...
Xian nodded in agreeance, turning toward the forest, "True, but we must go now, come and follow me the best you can." He paused and faced his way, "Although, if you are not quick enough then maybe you are of no help to Raven."
He smirked and turned back toward the forest, suddenly sprinting off into the darkening trees.
Beast Boy narrowed his eyes, "I'll show you quick." Transforming into a cheetah he felt the back pack straps slide against his shoulders but continued to fit snug under his arms. Taking off he dashed into the forest following the back of Xian, darkness enveloping him as the trees swallowed them whole.
It seemed as if hours had passed by…but he knew better… with his energy and stamina drained the minutes felt longer each time he place his paw on the ground and leaped over a soggy log. Thorns bore into his fur and his muscles screamed to slow down to take a break. But Beast Boy had to keep up, Xian was just a few feet away, but his speed has yet to slow down since they had started. He wanted to scream out to him to slow down, but his cheetah form didn't allow such conversation so he stuck to ignoring the pain and fighting through his forced breath. The shadows enveloped him and he saw a wall coming in the distance. Xian took a sharp right and Beast Boy quickly followed suit and he suddenly entered a darkening pathway, he could barely see anything in front of him. But he could hear footsteps. Following his ears he pushed forward and the darkness blanketed the area, he claws scraping on stone and just as he was about to give up- light shined up ahead.
Beast Boy pushed forward until he reached the light and leaped, landing of soft grass and rolling until he hit the bottom of a hill, his paws dangling to his left. Getting to his paws he looked around and noticed the absence of his guide. Transforming back to himself he cast his eyes around and realization dawned on him, he was back where they were earlier... where Raven and he stayed the night. Turning around he glanced up to see a small outcrop of a cave he had just dashed through.
Well…I guess I know why it was so dark…
Looking around he felt frustration boil inside him, not seeing any sign of Xian anywhere, transforming into a night dweller, wanting to practice his new form, he tried to pick up a scent, traces of him lingering in the air but no direct pathway.
But I swear I heard him come this way…it was no mistake…
Looking around he walked up the hill and sighed, realizing he must have ditched him. Anger formed at the pit of his stomach, feeling betrayal worming up instead of him.
Beast Boy let out a ferocious snarl and dug his claws into the dirt. Letting out a yell he let his emotions settle down to the pit of his stomach, breathing heavy and fur flat he glanced around his surroundings with keen eyes.
This was stupid, he was wasting time…Raven could be hurt or worse. Beast Boy shook his head, he shouldn't think like that. She was just as strong as any of them, if not stronger. She could hold out…but for how long…that was the real question. Beast Boy sighed and looked up to the crimson clouds that soared up above in the sky.
Where are you Raven?
Taking in a breath he started forward again and let his paws sink into the oozed mud that surrounded him. Glancing to his side he watched the grass flatten as the wind pushed against his ears. The sun sparkled at the edge of the horizon and he watched a trail of birds fly past in a hurry. His claws dug into clumps of grass as he neared a hillside, noticing little bits of life showing up around him. Little black birds flitted in the sky and small insects or so he presumed insects, flew to and fro near the edge of his vision. He spotted shadows dancing in the distance and he glanced curiously in their direction.
Picking up his speed he pushed toward the top of the hill where the shadows were just at. Glancing down, his ears rose in surprise to see a large pile of water strewn in front of far off from the shore lay many creatures of different sizes and shapes. A smile touched his lips and he started down slowly, following the small shadows that raced downhill ahead of him. As he reached the bottom he saw a familiar figure standing in the distance; a night dweller. As he neared the pavilion he saw many other figures appear and he smiled with reassurance. Perhaps they could help; this was their land after all.
"Hey!" He called out.
Racing to the bottom he saw the familiar dark coats standing all around the area exchanging hushed words. Walking up to a female he watched her turn away. Beast Boy paused and shook off the cold shoulder then turned to his other side, quickly racing toward a larger male who was whispering to another nearby. Perking up his ears he leaped forward, "Hey!"
The two creatures paused and glanced his way then suddenly stood and padded the other direction toward the water. Beast boy stopped in his tracks seeing everyone bluntly ignoring him.
"Can someone help me?" he glanced around but the space was getting wider.
Taking a few steps forward he cried out, "my friend is in danger, please can someone help?" Beast Boy looked around and sighed, seeing the empty circle of grass that surrounded him. Sitting on his haunches he felt his throat tighten from thirst and glanced over toward the pond a few lengths away. Turning toward the water he began to pad forward when he suddenly felt his heart leap as a shadow pounced in front of him.
Beast Boy stumbled back, tripping over his paws before crashing to the ground, dirt spewing in the air.
"You came back!"
Beast Boy blinked his eyes, seeing the familiar shape of the young pup he had met before. He held a toothy smile, a fang sticking out on each side.
"You want to play?" his voice was course but still held a young innocence to it.
Beast Boy smiled and slowly got to his paws, his thoughts slowed from dehydration. Shaking off the dirt he quickly returned to his senses and glanced at the blood red eyes that bored into him.
"Hey, it's you again. I would love to play…" Beast Boy coughed, feeling the cracked edge of his throat searing inside; "But I really have to do something first or someone could be in real trouble."
The pup tilted its head to the side, "what do you mean?"
Beast Boy shook his head, his head fuzzy and thoughts jumbled. "I-"he began but stumbled on his words, shaking his head in effort. Noticing his slow response the pup looked at him then toward the pond nearby, glancing around he nudged Beast Boy at his side.
"Come on-you need a drink."
Beast Boy nodded and padded forward with the pup frantically glancing to and fro, pushing him to move faster toward the water.
"Hey, quit pushing!" Beast Boy growled and the pup lowered his ears, "Sorry-just come ok?" He padded forward, paws splashing at the edge of the pond, pebbles scattered around his claws. His eyes glanced toward the grass that was stained red and saw the red that pasted the pebbles on the shore.
Is…is that blood?
He felt the push from the pup again and he took a few more steps toward the water, noting the red droplets that covered the stones. Something turned in his stomach, but hearing the lapping of water made his throat tighten. He needed water, no matter how bad the situation may be.
Beast Boy padded forward and greedily dunked his face toward the water, the liquid tracing across his nose and enveloped his tongue. The water was hot and it tasted a little like dirt but it was real and he took in gulps filling up his mouth and swallowing with satisfaction. He could feel the fidgeting of the pup beside him.
"Hurry up…hurry up…"
Beast Boy lifted his mussel, "hold your horses I-"
But the pup was crouched down, ears flat on his head. A shadow fell over his hot shoulders and heard the strong breath of someone standing just nearby him. There was a snapping of jaws and he turned his head in time to see a large night dweller in his face, jaws inches from his throat.
"Leave!" it shouted with ferocity.
Beast Boy stumbled back, the pebbles scraping against his paw pads from shock, "But I just got here!"
The creature snapped its jaws again; Beast Boy leaned away with unease, "Are you deaf creature? I said leave!"
Beast boy lowered his ears, "That's not very nice… maybe I would if you said please." Beast Boy pestered with a smirk, lifting his chest in defiance his throat moistened and his spirits lifted.
The creature narrowed his eyes, not amused then suddenly perked its ears, hearing others nearby shouting, "Come, come! The Shades are back we must fight!"
The creature stared at its companions who had rushed toward him in a hurry, eyes blood red filled with anger. They spared a glance toward Beast Boy before turning back to the large male towering over him.
He glanced at Beast Boy once more then shot over toward his companions and raced toward the other end of the pond where other dark creatures were gathering in huddled groups, finding his presence less threatening than the Shades apparently. Lifting his ears he slowly took one step then another, keeping his eyes on the trio of pack members, his green orbs following the trio until they formed a group of eight, father down the shoreline.
He heard a quiet sigh and glanced down toward the pup who was gazing at the distance where his family headed.
"It's a never-ending circle, don't you agree stranger?"
Beast Boy cocked his head to the side, "what do you mean kid?"
But his voice was drowned out by the shouts and screams of the night dwellers off in the distance. A couple creatures standing near him turned their heads along with Beast Boy.
"Get off our land!"
"We will tear your head clean off- this is our water to share not yours to take!"
"Prepare to die!"
Beast Boy lowered his ears at the chorus of shouts and glanced around to see many creatures running a distance away from the intruding night dwellers. He felt something grab at his shoulder and glanced down to see the pup standing on his hind legs, paw stretched out to get his attention.
"Don't worry. This happens a lot. Come…follow me…"
Beast Boy glanced at him and took one last glance at the group of night dwellers swarming around a pack of what seemed to be foxes; who seemed to be fighting to stay near the pond for a drink. The fox shades all stood at the edge of the pond, water dripping down their mussels. They each stared the night dwellers down with red eyes of their own, "You have no right; this is our water as much as yours!"
"There is not enough to spare! Only our kind will survive off this source!" There was a chorus of shouting and agreeance, "We will be the sole survivor; we are the top food chain!"
Beast Boy felt a chill go down his back as he watched the masses of night dwellers racing across the land to join their companions.
"Come on…we need to get as far away… the blood will fill the grass soon."
Beast Boy felt the tug of the pup's young teeth grasp at his tail and he gave a soft smile, sparing his last glance before turning around and leaping after the pup, past the hill where he had come. There was a screech in the air and his heart turned cold, hearing the screams of fear escalate toward his ears. The sound of ripping flesh and the smell of blood suddenly swarmed in his senses and Beast Boy stumbled, shocked from the outright battle behind him.
The pup halted and turned around and gave him a look of sympathy, "Don't look back… come. There is nothing we can do."
Beast Boy glanced at him and took a couple steps before following in his paw steps up the ravine until a dense set of trees towered above. A set of seven oaks filled the sky- alone and abandoned, they were the remaining trees in this area until past the rocky wall.
Once they reached the shelter of the leaves he felt the sun suddenly disappear from his back. Taking in a large breath he glanced around then finally took a look at where they pond laid. The shouting was dim, but the sparkling red that filled the pond glistened the waters and shined with the sun's light.
"I wish that didn't happen; there is nothing left here now."
Beast Boy turned to see the young pup glancing at the destruction far away, his fur laid flat but his eyes sparkled with confusion and sadness. Beast Boy turned back toward the destruction back where they had come.
"It's been going on for many moons…each full moon it would be worse." He continued, glancing away from Beast Boy. "I wish I knew what was happening…I'm sometimes scared…" he paused and glanced at Beast Boy with a smile, "But don't tell anyone that."
Beast Boy laughed and was about to say something when he interrupted him, "There is danger thick in the air. It grows, my pack knows this and we are afraid; for not only our lives…but for the sake of this land." He glanced around at the barren territory.
"It wasn't always like this. It was filled with water once, and flowers…and trees." He felt a radiate happiness fill deep within Beast Boy. Then his mood changed and in place filled anger and sadness.
"But something dark covered the land…and it just disappeared. It's gone…all gone."
Beast Boy stared at him, wondering why he was telling him all this. Was their some purpose he was trying to get after? Glancing up he noticed the sun beginning to dip again in the sky, it must be around mid-afternoon or perhaps a little later. He was running out of time.
Turning toward the pup who had paced toward the edge of the trees, facing away from his pack he took a few steps toward him.
"I'm sorry about your family…I wish there was something I could do… But I need help…someone I know is in danger." He paused as the pup turned toward him with curious red eyes, "and…and I don't know this area very well…" Beast Boy sighed feeling his wording slip. This wasn't a very convincing act of bravery…this was just a sad excuse of begging, to a kid no less.
"Was it that girl…that demon girl with you..?" The pup replied, turning around to face him completely, holding his interest.
"Um...yes, Raven is her name."
The pup glanced at him then toward the land where his family lived. For a moment he thought about the situation then gave a toothy smile. "Well…let's go find some danger then. I was itching for an adventure."
Beast Boy stared at him with surprise, "But what about your family and-"
The pup rolled his eyes, "Please, they are no more my family than the flowers. Their minds are filled with blood and their claws are full of ignorance." He paused and glanced toward the pond that laid far away, "they will find themselves in ruin soon enough…. There were a few that had left already…my mother included. There is nothing...Nothing here for me anymore."
Beast Boy nodded, "I understand…" he paused for a moment then took in a breath, "so… do you know your way around here by chance?"
The pup shook his head, as if to clear his memories, "Do I?" he laughed a young, innocent laugh, "I'm the best guide in the whole forest!" A toothy grin was returned, "I know all the secrets..." he paused with that smile, "so you need a guide?"
Beast Boy smiled, "Yes please."
"Then you have the perfect Shadow to do it, come on let's first leave this area there is nothing here for us but memories."
Beast Boy gave him a curious look as he started forward again, follow the pup with careful steps, as to not step on a twig or a stone, "Shadow?"
"Oh…yeah that's what we call ourselves sometimes…but we have many names. I like that one best." The pup leaped over a large stone, claws scraping against the surface as he climbed over and leaped to the other side.
Beast Boy smiled and followed suit, "Well, then I don't see why your name can't be Shadow." The pup glanced at him curiously, ducking over a low branch, "Again with the names…I don't understand, but if it makes you happy Stranger…"
Beast Boy stared at him, "Happy? Of course it should, it gives you a title of who you are. You've never had a name?"
The pup shook his head with a no and Beast Boy stared at him with shock as they exited the trees and found themselves at mercy with the sun once again.
"I've never heard of such a thing…we all know when we are talking to a certain member. I mean it's obvious isn't it?" He laughed while Beast Boy gave him a quizzical look but didn't press the topic. There was obviously too far a disconnection between his kind and theirs. It took a few minutes before they found themselves at the outcropped wall again. Beast Boy looked up with loathing, he had hoped to never cross this path again.
"Here we will squeeze through this…" The pup replied finding and outcrop. Beast Boy quickly followed behind in silence until they found themselves back in the forest on the other side.
Once he stepped on grass the pup turned to him, "So who are you again Stranger…I don't think you live here."
Beast Boy carefully stepped over a large tree root, shadows enveloping the duo again, "I'm a Titan, from another planet, called Earth" Beast Boy searched for more words while the pup leaped over another root stuck in the ground. Turning around he shrugged, "Another planet? So there's more than just where I live?"
Beast Boy nodded, the pup continued on, "Why would you come to a horrible place like this? I mean isn't their better places than ours?"
Beast Boy laughed, "I agree, even Tameran was better than this place…" he paused, clearing his throat, afraid of offending the pup's home. But Shadow didn't seem to mind as he clamored over a couple more stones.
Beast Boy let out a breath of air, "I guess I'm just here because of Raven."
The pup glanced at him, "That girl you were with?" Beast Boy nodded, "Oh so she's like your mate or something?"
Beast Boy froze in his tracks, the pup paused as well to glance at him, "What? No! She's just my friend."
The pup laughed, shrugging it off like any other kid, "Oh…ok!" He turned around and clamored over a root and stood at the top glancing around at the dimly lit forest. Turning toward him his eyes darkened, "I know where the horrible darkness lives and grows… I think that is where your friend is…" he glanced farther to the West, "I haven't been here since I was really young…my mother…" His voice fell and he let out a breath, "it's a scary place so … don't leave me ok?"
Beast Boy gazed at the little night dweller, seeing the uncertainty sparkling in his eyes.
"I thought you wanted an adventure?" Beast Boy asked.
"I did…I also…never mind…come on, follow me!" Beast Boy watched the pup take off and he scampered after him.
I won't leave you behind Shadow I promise...
"Hey Shadow…how much longer till you think we'll get there?"
Shadow paused in his steps and glanced up toward the crack in the leaves above tried to judge the sunlight filtering down below. Looking back toward Beast Boy he gave a serious look, "Ok… don't freak out...but we might be lost."
Beast Boy felt his heart sank and fear escalate in his veins, "You're joking right?"
The little pup looked around, "Nope…nothing really looks familiar…"
Beast Boy's eyes widened with surprise, "And you never thought to stop and tell me this!"
The pup smiled innocently, "I just thought we'd find the trail sooner or later…" Looking around he paced the area a few times to find some clues of where to head next.
"It feels like we've been in here for hours…I can't think straight…" Beast Boy murmured and glanced around. He felt as though the shadows were going to swallow him whole any minute. The pup glanced at him with curious eyes and paused near a large tree trunk, Beast Boy suddenly felt his instincts swirling…his adrenaline escalated. Perking up his ears he looked to and fro and suddenly saw a shadow drop over the little pup in front of him. Looking up his heart dropped and fear swam up to his throat.
"Look out!" He screamed before digging his claws into the damp grass, shooting off and slamming into the pup, pushing him to the ground before a loud BANG, escalated in the area. Jumping to his paws he turned around, ears flattened, pushing the pup behind him for protection.
A spider as big as what seemed to be five feet wide stood before the duo. Beast Boy heard the terrified scream of the pup behind him and he quickly transformed into a lion slashing the insect away a few inches. His fear almost choking him back, this thing had hair all around the back and up the legs. It's eyes bored into him and he began to wonder if this is what it felt like to be in a horror movie.
It's like a spider on steroids! Nothing normal looks like this!
Beast Boy felt the hibby jeebies, staring at the eight legged creature and almost felt his breakfast come back up from earlier. His head swarmed in darkness, his body seemed to almost lag behind. He needed air…He couldn't think…which way was up…
There was a clicking and he veered away from an attack, almost stepping on the pup behind him. Beast Boy growled and leaped forward lashing at the legs and drawing attention to himself, away from Shadow.
"Follow me!" he cried out, transforming into an pterodactyl, but quickly realizing the limited space with the tree branches caving in too tightly in the area. Beast Boy quickly transformed into an owl instead, almost losing his balance of flight during the process. Glancing up he knew he needed to clear his mind, taking a few forced pull of his wings he burst out from the leaves, taking in a fresh breath of air and glanced around- noticing where the sun was located. Looking back down toward the forest floor he dived back into the branches, careful not to scrape his wings on the way down.
The large insect had crawled after him as he flew to the top of the trees; Beast Boy paused and floated, waiting for the predator to reach him. He waited until it reached the branches just below and quickly transformed into a kangaroo mid flight, flipping over and slamming his feet onto the abdomen, sending it flying to the ground with a screech. Transforming back to an owl he saw the dust rise and little movement as it tried to get back to it's upright form. Beast Boy flew down, feeling the air slapping at his face and quickly transformed to himself and pulled the back pack from his shoulders. Digging around he found the small dagger that had a ruby encased on the top of the handle. Racing over he leaped on top of a tree root and threw the dagger square in its chest until it moved no more. He stared at his victim and felt something terrible rise in his chest. Crouching down he felt acid in his throat and forced it back down. This was a fear he never wanted to see again.
Beast Boy took in a slow breath and regained his balance. Jumping back to the ground he tried to put the image of the kill out of his mind, tightening the straps of the back pack so it fit more snug. He felt a hot stare as if someone was watching him and he looked up to see the little night dweller gazing from a tall thicket of grass.
You saved me…I owe you my life
Beast Boy felt his mind pricked and glanced toward Shadow sitting nearby with wide red eyes. Transforming back to his species he padded forward, confusion laced in his mind.
"Did…did you just speak through my…"
"Your mind?" The pup laughed his mouth not moving and Beast Boy stopped in his tracks, staring at him.
"We can all do that here on Azarath, it's something we are all born with, you can't do this?"
Beast boy shook his head and the pup gave him a confused look, "You're weird."
"I'm the weird one? Hey I'm not doing all this psychic mumbo jumbo." He replied with a laugh, quickly walking away from the insect carcass that had recently began to curl up. Glancing around he replied in a more serious tone, "Are their more around?"
Shadow looked up as well, "I hope not…that was scary…"
Beast Boy nodded, "Ok…let's keep going, just in case…" he paused, "Oh...and the sun was pointing toward that direction…" He pointed to his left and the pup nodded, a smile touching his lips. "Great! We need to go this way then!" Beast Boy nodded and quickly followed Shadow until they reached a point of where the grass became darker and the trees no longer held their leaves. The forest almost seemed sick…everything was slowly dying left and right.
There came a point when the undergrowth turned black and he could feel the air thicken. The night dwellers paw steps became slower and he more so walked beside Beast Boy, rather than in front of him.
"I…I think we are close…" the pup whispered nearby, ears lowered.
Beast Boy glanced at him, then toward the front where many branches were cracked filled with fungus and rotten to the core. He suddenly noticed that there were no other noises than their own paw steps. The insects have left and the birds have flown away. The overwhelming silence made his fur stand on end.
But something else made his blood run cold and his thoughts stop in their tracks. A scream…a female scream filled the thick air…and there was only one scream he knew sounded like that.
"Raven!"
