Three days before Valentine's Day and Kurt and Blaine were snuggled up on their new couch in their new apartment; watching Bravo as they ate popcorn and sipped tea. It was nice; knowing that they were alone. They didn't need to speak to each other or anything. The way Kurt held tightly onto Blaine's hand said all he needed to hear.
The apartment wasn't large, but it was enough for the two of them. It had one small bedroom just large enough for their bed and a medium sized dresser next to the door. They had a small loveseat and chair in the living room; along with a little coffee table and television stand. There was a little table set up to eat at with two chairs. Kurt had spent a lot of time trying to make this little apartment feel like home. There were pictures up on the walls and bits and pieces of their lives back in Ohio on the tables.
Kurt looked up to Blaine, "So any plans on Friday?" He asked.
"No, why?" Blaine answered.
"No reason." He replied. There was a reason; it was Valentine's Day and Blaine hadn't mentioned anything. Of course neither had Kurt. "I was thinking about dinner? Sardi's?" He asked.
"I was hoping to just stay in. I've got class all day and I'm gonna be tired." Blaine answered him.
Kurt was disappointed, clearly Blaine didn't remember Valentine's Day, but Kurt did and he wanted to go out and do something with the man he loved. "You do know what Friday is, right?" Kurt asked him.
"The fourteenth…oh." Suddenly it hit him. "Valentine's Day. Kurt, I know you want to go out and it's our first Valentine's Day together, but can we celebrate on Saturday?" Blaine asked reluctantly.
"Uh, yeah, sure. I just want to celebrate being with you." He said just before Blaine kissed him.
What Kurt didn't know was that Blaine hadn't forgotten about Valentine's Day. In fact he had been planning since early January just how he was going to show Kurt how much he loved him. He had enlisted Rachel and Santana's help to pull it off.
His plan was to have Kurt follow little clues throughout New York City to find him at Central Park with a small table sitting there for dinner. He was so excited about surprising Kurt for Valentine's Day; he knew that he was hiding it well enough that Kurt had no idea what was going to happen that Friday. It was going to be the best Valentine's Day ever.
The next two days seemed to drag for both of the boys. Kurt was a little upset he had to wait until Saturday to celebrate Valentine's with Blaine and Blaine was anxious to surprise Kurt on Friday.
Friday morning came and when Kurt woke up Blaine was gone. He got out of bed and went to the kitchen for breakfast. He saw a note on the refrigerator that read:
Good morning. I'm sorry I left without saying goodbye. I had to get to class to talk to my TA before class started. I will see you after class tonight. I love you. Love Blaine. P.S. Don't forget to check the mail this morning.
Kurt was confused they never checked the mail that early; it didn't come that early. Nevertheless Kurt went downstairs to their mailbox and got the one envelope that was inside. There was no return address or even a delivery address. Out of curiosity he opened the envelope. In it there was a small piece of paper that read:
Good morning handsome.
Now that you've found me go into the city.
Head to the place where Lady Gaga met Katy Perry.
Kurt was puzzled when he read this. It had to be from Blaine. Where Lady Gaga met Katy Perry? He couldn't figure it out as he walked back up the stairs to their apartment.
Kurt got in the shower thinking about the note from Blaine. As he belted out 'Bad Romance' in the shower it came to him. Where Lady Gaga me Katy Perry! Where he and Blaine met; the karaoke bar in Manhattan. He quickly finished his shower and headed to the karaoke bar. He was sure that it was closed, but it didn't stop him from going anyways.
He held onto the piece of paper and headed for the bar. He couldn't believe that he had no idea that Blaine was going to do something for Valentine's Day. He didn't know what was planned, but he was so excited to see what it was. It seemed to take forever to get to the bar that morning even though he was practically running down the street. He ran into every other person on the street quickly apologized and continued on running to the karaoke bar.
He got to the bar and just as he thought it was closed. He looked around for a second before seeing an envelope taped to the door that said Lady Gaga. Kurt chuckled seeing this. Blaine was the sweetest man in the world. He went over to the door and took the envelope off of it. He opened it up and read the note inside:
Hello Lady Gaga.
You found me too. You're so good at this.
Oh please say to me
You'll let me be your man
And please say to me
You'll let me hold your hand
-The Beatles
Beatles' lyrics? This one was a little harder. 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'? Why would he write these lyrics? Kurt walked down the street and made it back to Times Square. He looked up at all of the Broadway billboards hoping that one day he'd see his face and name up there. He kept reading the lyrics over and over again. He walked slowly down the sidewalk utterly confused.
He passed Sardi's while walking. 'Oh, we had our first real date here. He was so cute and nervous. I thought that I was going to vomit from my nerves. That night was perfect; I never thought I'd find someone like Blaine'. He kept walking looking at all of the signs and thinking back to that night. How he invited Blaine back to Bushwick to get away from his man-whore roommate. He tried to picture that moment in his head.
Kurt's eyes lit up just a little having an idea. "You could come to Bushwick?" He asked timidly.
Blaine began to smile. He took his hands out of his pockets and unlinked arms with Kurt. Blaine looked deeply into Kurt's eyes and took his hand and said, "Okay, but you pick the movie."
They held hands and walked to the train station. Thankfully there was a train just getting ready to head to Bushwick. Blaine let Kurt get on the train first. They sat holding hands all the way back to Bushwick.
Kurt stopped walking; he wanted to hold my hand. He thought to himself. He looked at Sardi's and figured out what the clue was. The first time Blaine held Kurt's hand. He tried to remember just how the night went as he walked down the street after leaving Sardi's retracing his steps from their first date. In the distance he could see a black 'x' written on the sidewalk. He ran over to the 'x' but there was nothing there. He searched and searched before his phone vibrated in his pocket.
Blaine:
Received: 12:30 PM
I know you know it's me. Do you remember our first kiss? I do.
Kurt smiled after reading the text. That one was easy. The train station where Blaine kissed him for the first time. He hurried to the train station and took the train to Bushwick to find that the ticket attendant had the note for him.
We've met. I've held your hand. I kissed you.
But there was that night in your bed. ;)
The clues were getting easier and easier. He knew that Blaine was going to get tired of waiting and that it would become much easier to try and find him. He headed to the loft to find the next clue.
Again, easy, it was sitting on the bed.
I knew you'd find me. It was pretty easy.
That night you said I could take your bed.
But we both ended up there instead
I held you close.
I didn't want to let go.
It felt like we were alone.
Go to where we were when you said you wanted a place of our own.
Again, Plaza. He turned the paper over and read:
Ask the manager for me. He'll give you the key.
Kurt flew back to Manhattan to the Plaza. He walked in and asked for the manager. "Yes, I'm looking for Blaine Anderson."
"Of course. Here is the room key. 206." He told Kurt.
Kurt hurried to the room and opened the door. There were rose petals on the floor and a vase full on the table in the center of the room. He opened the card and read:
I promise this is the last time.
There will be no more clues.
I'm trying not to rhyme.
But there's nothing I can do.
Please find me; I hate not being with you.
I hope you're hungry.
There's a dinner waiting in Central Park for two.
A dinner in Central Park for two. How romantic of Blaine; Kurt couldn't believe that Blaine went through this just for him. So he rushed to Central Park to meet Blaine for his Valentine's Day dinner for two. As he walked to the park Blaine was doing the same thing.
Noticing he was running a little behind Blaine hailed a cab to get to the park faster. He jumped in, "Central Park" he told the cab driver. They were stopped at a red light and Blaine kept looking at his watch hoping that Kurt wouldn't get there before he did. He was beginning to get fidgety in the back seat, his legs were shaking, and he was looking around hoping not to see Kurt.
The light turned green and the cab began to drive through when a truck ran the red light and crashed into the side of Blaine's cab. The cab was crushed, the driver was unconscious at the wheel and Blaine was thrown from the vehicle. Blaine lied on the ground unconscious; bleeding from the ear and his arms and legs. The sirens began to circle in the air; police, fireman, and ambulances raced to the crash scene. Blaine was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.
Kurt had made it to Central Park right where Blaine told him to meet, but he wasn't there. He looked around for a while thinking maybe he wasn't in the correct spot. Blaine was nowhere to be found. So he called him.
"Hello, you've reached Blaine Anderson; I can't get to the phone. Please leave a message."
"Hey, Blaine. Um, I'm waiting here in Central Park where you told me to meet you and you're not here. Just give me a call." He said into the phone.
While Kurt waited in Central Park; Blaine was being rushed to the hospital after his accident. While in the ambulance he regained consciousness and looked at the EMT. He didn't know where he was or what had happened. He tried to get the attention of the EMT to ask him what happened but he drifted back to unconsciousness in the ambulance.
In Central Park Kurt stood waiting for Blaine.
Blaine:
Sent: 5:15 PM
Blaine please answer me. I'm here in the park waiting for you. I hope you're just late.
Kurt sat down on the bench and a man came and sat down next to him. "You look upset." He said with an English accent.
"No, just worried. My boyfriend planned this huge Valentine's Day thing for me and he isn't here like he said he would be." Kurt explained.
The man looked at Kurt like he was the most handsome man in the world. He couldn't look away from him as Kurt looked down to his phone anxiously waiting for it to ring and Blaine's name to appear on the screen. He kept looking around the park to see if he could spot any sign of Blaine. The smell of raspberry hair gel in the air or the sight of a brightly colored polo shirt and bow-tie. He wanted to hold Blaine right that second. "Excuse me." Kurt said getting up from the bench. He pulled out his phone and dialed Blaine's number again. "Blaine, please call me back. I'm starting to get worried about you. You're over an hour late. Just call me when you get this. I love you." He said and hung up the phone.
"Any luck?" The other man asked him.
"No." Kurt replied sadly.
"You think he just didn't come?" The English man asked.
Kurt felt insulted for Blaine. "No! Blaine would never do that. He wouldn't go through all of this just to stand me up. He loves me." Kurt snapped.
"Sorry. Just a thought."
"You're wrong." Kurt snapped and walked away leaving the man standing there watching Kurt as he left the area. Kurt dialed Blaine's number again. "Blaine, please answer me. I'm freaking out." Kurt began to tear up not knowing what was going on with Blaine. Just as Kurt hung up the phone and went to text Blaine he got a phone call from a number he didn't recognize. "Hello?"
"Hello. Is this Kurt Hummel?"
"Yes." He answered.
"We have you as an emergency contact for a Blaine Devon Anderson."
"What happened?" Kurt asked.
"If you could come down here we can explain everything." The person on the other end told Kurt.
Kurt rushed to the hospital as fast as he possibly could. Tears were coming to his eyes as he wiped them away from his eyes; he was thinking about what could have possibly happened to Blaine. Every thought was worse than the previous. He didn't know what condition he was in or if he was even conscious. He pushed passed every person on the street. He was running as fast as he could to get to Blaine to be with him, to see him, to hold him.
He ran into the hospital. "I need to see Blaine Anderson. I was called and I…I…I just need to see him."
"Are you Kurt Hummel?" The nurse asked.
"Yes. Please, where's Blaine. I need to see him."
"He was in a very severe car accident." The nurse to Kurt.
"What happened? Is he okay?" Kurt yelled trying desperately to hold back tears.
"A truck ran a red light and ran into his cab. Mr. Anderson was thrown from the vehicle. He is currently in a medically induced coma to get the brain swelling down." The nurse calmly explained to Kurt.
"Where is he?" Kurt asked wiping away a tear.
"This way." The nurse said as she led Kurt to Blaine's room.
Kurt feared the worst while walking to Blaine's room. The nurse stopped outside of room 206 and Kurt let out his tears. He saw Blaine lying in the bed, unconscious, hooked to a million different machines. He was just lying there helpless.
"You may stay as long as you like." The nurse said before closing the door.
Kurt walked over to Blaine's bedside. He dropped to his knees. "Blaine." He said with his face buried into the bed sheets. "Please wake up." He was sobbing into the blanket when his phone rang. He looked at it seeing it was Rachel and answered it. "I really don't feel like talking right now, Rachel." He said.
"Are you crying? What's wrong? What happened?" She asked in a panic.
"It's Blaine. He got into an accident." Kurt told her. "Please, Rachel, I don't want to talk. I'll call you later." He told her then hung up the phone. He pulled a chair over next to Blaine and held on to his helpless boyfriend's hand. He wanted to crawl onto the bed and hold him like the first night on the couch in Bushwick. He wanted Blaine's eyebrows to twitch as he let out a breath. He wanted Blaine to squeeze his hand. He wanted to see his smile again. He wanted him to wake up and be okay. To wake up and just start singing. Because that's what Blaine does. He sings; he sings all day and every day. But this day Kurt hadn't had the chance to hear him sing or play the guitar or piano. All he could hear was the beeping of the heart monitor sitting in the hospital room. All he could see was a motionless Blaine.
The day drew on and soon it was night. Kurt hadn't moved since 6:30; it was 11:30. Kurt could feel someone at the door. "I know you're there."
Rachel walked in with Santana and put a hand on Kurt's shoulder. "How is he?" Rachel asked.
"Not good. Internal bleeding. Broken arm. Three broken ribs and massive brain swelling." Kurt's voice cracked. "They put him in a medically induced coma to help the swelling." Kurt broke. Rachel knelt down next to Kurt trying to console him, but to no avail. "Can you guys just go?"
"Kurt, I –"
"Go, Rachel!" Kurt shouted at his friends.
Rachel stood; "Okay, but we'll be back tomorrow to check on you and bring you new clothes."
"Thank you." Kurt barely got out.
The girls left the room and Kurt's attention was completely on Blaine again. "What you did today; was incredible. I was upset when you said you didn't want to celebrate until tomorrow, but you planned all of that." Kurt said to Blaine. "The little notes around the city. It was a lot of travel, but I loved it. I'm guessing you had that room at the Plaza for the night. So when you are completely recovered we're going." Kurt told his boyfriend.
The one thing that Kurt didn't want to think about was the one thing that was in his mind: what if he didn't recover? Kurt tried to suppress the thought of Blaine not waking up, but it just kept coming back. Kurt fell asleep sitting in the chair with his head on Blaine's bed.
The next morning Rachel and Santana walked into the hospital room to Kurt asleep still clutching to Blaine's hand. "Kurt, wake up." Rachel said gently shaking Kurt awake.
Kurt slowly woke and lifted his head from the bed hoping it was all a bad dream, but there he was sitting in a hospital room with Blaine in a coma. "Have you called his parents?" Santana asked Kurt.
"No. I wasn't going to." Kurt responded.
"Kurt, they're his parents. They might want to know."
"No! They don't deserve to know. There has not been one word between them since Thanksgiving and I…" Kurt paused. "You guys don't know what his dad did to him. Just leave it alone. I will call his brother, but not his parents."
"Kurt, what did his dad do?" Rachel asked.
"What didn't he do? He abused him physically and emotionally. He kicked Blaine out of the family." Kurt started. "It doesn't matter. He's out of that and here. Here! In this mother fucking hospital!" Kurt yelled. "Where I can't do a god dam thing to help him. If I lose him –" Kurt stopped yelling at his friends.
"He's going to be okay, Kurt." Santana said to him
"You don't know that. Hell, the doctors don't even know that." Kurt said beginning to sob again. "I need him. He is my everything. He is everything good and pure in this world."
The doctor walked into the room. "Are you related to the patient?"
The girls shook their heads no as Kurt stood staring at the doctor. "No, but he doesn't have family." He paused. "I'm all there is."
"Does he have living relatives?"
"I'd like to say no, but yes he does." Kurt told the doctor.
"Are they coming?"
"No, they don't even know." Kurt said turning away from the doctor to hold Blaine's hand.
"We have to tell his family." The doctor started.
"No!" Kurt quickly turned around. "I told you. I'm all that there is. His family didn't care enough when he was…" Kurt trailed off.
"Mr. Hummel, I get that he is a close friend -" The doctor started.
"He is not just my friend, doctor." Kurt had cut the doctor off. "He is everything to me. I will not call his parents. I can call his brother, but they don't talk much."
"Please." The doctor said leaving the room.
Kurt pulled out his phone and took a deep breath before he dialed Copper's phone number in Los Angeles. The phone rang and rang. "Hello?"
"Cooper?"
"Yes. Who is this?"
"Kurt Hummel. Blaine's boyfriend." Kurt said hesitantly.
"Oh, hey. How's my brother?" Cooper asked.
"That's actually why I'm calling." Kurt began. The other end of the phone was silent. "Blaine was in an accident. Um, he's really beat up. Broken ribs, broken arm, and internal bleeding."
"Let me talk to him." Cooper almost shouted at Kurt desperate to talk to his little brother.
"You can't. He, um, he also has some pretty severe brain swelling and they put him into a medically induced coma." Kurt's voice cracked.
"I'm on the next flight to New York." Cooper said and hung up the phone. Without packing a bag Cooper Anderson left his condo and headed for the Los Angeles airport desperate to get to his little brother.
Kurt sat next to Blaine. He had nothing to say; well a lot to say but couldn't conjure up the words to actually say them. So he just sat there. Rachel and Santana would bring him food and water trying to get him to go to sleep for a few hours. He and Blaine didn't live far away, but he refused to leave.
Around one o'clock in the morning Cooper got to the hospital. "How is he?" He said from the door.
Startled Kurt turned around. "Oh, um, same." He told him. "The swellings gone down, not much, but it's a start."
Cooper walked up behind Kurt. "Did you call my parents?"
"No."
"Okay." Cooper didn't try to argue. He knew how Blaine felt about their parents and he knew how his dad felt about Blaine. "Um, although I think I will call them. Just so my mom knows."
"Do whatever." Kurt said to him.
"Kurt, we'll get through this…" Cooper paused placing a hand on Kurt's shoulder. "We'll get through it together. Blaine's a fighter, Kurt. He will pull through this."
"Thank you."
Cooper turned and walked out of the room to call his parents. "Hello. Mom? Yeah, I just wanted to tell you that Blaine got into a car accident."
"What?!"His mom said over the phone.
"Yeah, a pretty bad one. He has three broken ribs, a broken arm, and some brain swelling." He could hear his mother begin to cry. "And they've gotten the internal bleeding taken care of." He paused. "Mom? Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Are you okay?"
"We are on our way to New York."
"Mom, are you sure?"
"He's my son, Cooper."
"Okay." Cooper hung up the phone and walked back into the hospital room. He could tell how much Kurt loved Blaine while he watched Kurt hold onto Blaine while he sat next to the bed. "Kurt, I, uh, called my parents. My mom is on her way here. And maybe my dad. I don't know."
"Great." Kurt said with a scoff. He turned to face Cooper. "I'm sorry. I'm not meaning to be mean or snap at you. I just, he kept me sane and now he can't."
Cooper pulled up the other chair and sat next to Kurt. "Look, Kurt, I understand. I'm not my dad's biggest fan either. After Blaine told us he was gay, my dad got angry. Like all of a sudden Blaine wasn't his son anymore and that made me resent my dad. Because he is my little brother and I'd do pretty much anything to protect him." Cooper told Kurt. "And for the first time, in a really long time, Blaine told me he was happy. That first phone call after you two moved into an apartment together. He told me that you were the best thing that had ever happened to him. That he wanted to be with you for the rest of his life. He loves you more than anything, Kurt. And I can tell you feel the same."
Kurt began to cry before Cooper brought him into a hug. They sat and talked about Blaine all night. Kurt told him stories about what they did. He told him what Blaine did on Valentine's Day. And Cooper told Kurt about Blaine as a little kid. For the first time since Blaine's accident Kurt laughed.
At noon the Monday after the accident Angela Anderson came into the hospital room. "Blaine!" She screamed at the sight of her comatose son. "My Blaine."
Kurt and Cooper walked back in from the cafeteria to see Angela grasping Blaine's hand. "Mom." Cooper said.
"When did this happen?" She demanded.
"Friday." Kurt told her.
"Friday?! And I found out yesterday?!" She yelled at Kurt.
"Mom!" Cooper interjected. "Kurt hasn't slept since Friday. Okay and the way you left it with Blaine; I completely understand why he didn't call you."
"Excuse me?"
"You have never stood up for Blaine against dad. And that hurt him. He hasn't been happy in a long time. You should be happy that Kurt is here with him, because he loves Blaine more than you could know." Cooper yelled at his mother.
Kurt turned away from the scene and went back to Blaine. He held Blaine's hand and began to cry.
"Mom, let's go get some coffee and I'll explain what's going on." Cooper said ushering his mother out of the room.
Kurt sat down on the bed next to Blaine. "Hey." He began. "I, um, really hope that you can hear me. It's been three days since the accident and here we are sitting in the hospital. Every morning I look outside and I try to hear you sing. I love waking up to you singing in the morning. Like the first morning after we moved into our apartment. Remember? You woke me up singing "Teenage Dream" into your hairbrush while dancing in the kitchen. Making breakfast; it was the cutest thing ever. I want to hear your voice again. I want to hold you close to me. I want to hear you laugh and to kiss you.
"Blaine, I've never known the meaning of true happiness until I met you. I thought I was going to be alone for a long time, but then I kicked some guy in a bar and fell in love with him. Even when we're arguing about the dishes or coming home late; I go to bed smiling because I know in the morning I will have you whether I'm mad at you or not. And looking at you lying there, I'm afraid to fall asleep because I might not have you when I wake up." He tried to sing to Blaine but began to cry instead. "I'm begging at this point, Blaine. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to see you in your first starring role on Broadway. Or at your album release party or movie premiere on the red carpet. I love you so much Blaine. I need you. I need all of you. Forever." Kurt sobbed into Blaine's blanket. "Please." He put his hand on Blaine's chest wanting to feel him breath.
Cooper and Angela walked back into the room. Angela saw Kurt sitting on the bed with his hand on Blaine's chest and tears coming down his face. She knew when she met Kurt that he was someone special, but she had gotten it in her head that Kurt was the reason Blaine left. But Cooper explained everything. Blaine being bullied in school about being gay. How his dad hit him and she never knew. And how Blaine smiles and laughs and sings all the time.
Several days had passed then it became three weeks and Blaine was still comatose. The swelling hadn't gone down enough to try and revive him. Cooper finally convinced Kurt to go home and get a good night's sleep, but he couldn't knowing that Blaine was in the hospital. He watched videos on his phone of Blaine singing wherever he went. When they went ice skating right after New Years together and Blaine fell and slid four feet on the ice. He cleaned the apartment and got things ready for Blaine to come home.
He went back to the hospital with a bag so he could stay with Blaine. He walked into Daniel Anderson sitting in the chair next to the window. He stopped dead in his tracks at the door.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Daniel asked when he saw Kurt.
"I've been here since it happened. And Mrs. Anderson was here just days later and all of a sudden you care enough to come? It's been almost four weeks that Blaine has been in that bed. Why now?" Kurt asked him.
"He's my son."
"Oh, so now he's your son." Kurt said. "But on Thanksgiving he wasn't good enough. Or he was not straight enough; too gay. Coming home with a boyfriend. You told him to leave and never come back. Even my family was here a week ago to see him."
"Don't you dare speak to me like that!" Daniel yelled at Kurt.
Angela hurried in behind her husband to try and calm him down. "Please, Kurt has been here every single day. He's slept a total of about 15 hours in the last month." She explained.
"Let go of me, Angela!" He screamed shoving Angela off of him.
A nurse came running into the room. "What's going on?" She looked around seeing Angela on the floor she said, "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"Not a chance."
"Sir, if you don't go willingly I will have to call security." She said. Daniel left the room pushing passed the nurse.
"We are sorry." Cooper said to her.
"Not a problem." She turned and walked away.
"Mom, you alright? Do you want some coffee?" Cooper asked.
"Yes, I'll go with you." She said and they both left the room.
Kurt went through all of the flowers to see which were still alive. He had taken some back to the apartment, but most he left with Blaine. He asked the nurse to change Blaine's pajamas to his favorite pair. He laid down next to Blaine on the bed and put his arm across his chest. As Kurt settled down into the bed next to Blaine he said, "Don't leave me."
And Kurt heard something he's been longing to here. "Never."
To be continued…
