For the rest of the day everyone kept a close eye on Sam and made sure that the weird Slytherin stayed away from her.
The next day was a clear and slightly cold Saturday and it had Sam and Sirius heading over to the Quidditch pitch and, Sam realised, it was the first time in a long time that it was just the two of them.
"Um," she started, hoping the break the silence.
Sirius, striding alongside her with a broom (taken from the broom shed) in each of his hands, glanced at her, an eyebrow raised in question.
"Why are we doing this again?" she asked him, puzzled.
The grey eyed boy frowned in thought for a moment before responding, "Because you should have more flying practice and there's nothing else to do at the moment."
Sam was about to protest and say that they could be exploring the castle some more but Sirius spoke again.
"Besides," he said, "We need something to do while Rose and Scorpius are doing their boring prefect stuff."
Sam sighed, "Poor Albus, I wouldn't want to be stuck alone with those two."
Sirius grinned wickedly, "Yeah, he really drew the short straw there, didn't he?"
The blonde shoved him lightly, "I seem to remember you bribing him with Jelly Slugs so we didn't have to chaperone Rose and Scorpius while they did their rounds."
Sirius puffed up with pride, "Clever bit of thinking on my part I think. We didn't all need to babysit those two and, this way, we get to hang out and do some flying!"
Sam waved her arms in pretend excitement, "Yay," she droned.
"Oh, you love it," Sirius nudged her.
She rolled her eyes and tried to get rid of the butterflies flittering in her stomach.
She really wasn't looking forward to flying again but nothing could change the mind of Sirius Orion Black.
Sam let out a loud sigh as she realised they were at their destination
"Come on, Samantha," Sirius cheered, "You remember how to do it."
He handed her a school broom and motioned for her to begin.
"You are such a meany face," she complained as she mounted.
Sirius tutted, "Now, now, Samantha, no need to pull out the big insults."
Her annoyance at him caused her to kick off harder than was needed at this practice.
Sam rose fast and immediately freaked out, her heart hammering spastically and her mind flickering back to the last time she had been in this sort of situation.
The broom suddenly stopped, causing her to wonder what she had done right.
It was only seconds later that she was wondering what she had done wrong.
I'm gonna die!
Rejecting her for unknown reasons, the broom suddenly bucked and tossed her to the ground which was, thankfully, only a few metres down.
While she screamed, Sirius yelled, "I've got y-"
He didn't get to finish his sentence as he then became the landing pad for the falling blonde.
The air rushed out of their lungs as they collided, the angle of her fall caused them to roll slightly.
The result was that now Sirius was the one doing the crushing.
Sam's cries of 'Get off me, you big lump!' were muffled by the fact that her face was pressed into Sirius' chest.
The boy lifted himself up a bit, groaning a little as he did so.
He moved so that their faces were a few inches apart.
Sam, before indignant, was now perfectly still, which was at great odds with her rapidly thumping heart and tummy full of butterflies.
Sirius beamed at her.
"What?" she demanded, regaining some of her attitude.
"Nothing," he said, continuing to unnerve her with his expression, "It's just…something brought you here, Samantha Perrick," he gestured to their position, "Call it what you will…fate…destiny."
"A broom."
He ignored her input and went on, "But just because something is your destiny or your path, doesn't mean you wouldn't have got there anyway."
As he started to ramble on about confusing philosophical nonsense, Sam took stock of her injuries and body.
One of her hands was underneath her but the other one was free and she used it to grab the back of Sirius' robes in an attempt to pull him off her.
He wouldn't budge and seemed to have not noticed her actions.
Sam tuned back in to what he was saying.
"I guess what I'm trying to say is…that sometimes what you don't like is actually what you do like and what you think you don't need, is actually what you do need."
What is he talking about?
She lifted her head so she could see over his shoulder and it was a good thing she did, for that was how she noticed that a couple of students were quickly approaching.
Panic animated her.
"Sirius!" she yelped, "There are people coming! Get the hell off me!"
He blinked and glanced down at her, seeming to only just remember where he was.
"So," he said warmly and with a wink, "You don't mind being like this as long as there's no-one else around?"
Sam blushed, rolled her eyes and then jerked her legs about.
"Ouch!" cried Sirius as he jumped up, "That was uncalled for!"
Sam stretched her uncomfortable body, "Not in my books."
The group of kids were tossing a ball around and were coming steadily closer.
Sam quickly leapt up and grabbed a broom.
"Nothing happened," she told Sirius.
He raised a sceptical eyebrow.
"What?" she asked, "Nothing happened so…just fly around…but casually…fly casual."
He mouthed her words to himself, clearly confused.
Sam held the broom at arm's length and asked, "Was this the one I had before?"
Sirius glanced around, thinking, "No…why?"
"The one I had before didn't like me at all," Sam announced.
"You're ridiculous," Sirius said, his smile saying he didn't care if she was silly or not.
"Thank you," she grinned, taking a bow.
"Are you going to try flying again?" he questioned.
At that, she hesitated and glanced over at the group of kids who had stopped several metres away.
"Uh…" she pulled a face, "I don't really want to embarrass myself in front of other people."
Sirius gasped and grinned, "I'm honoured, Samantha! You only want to let me see you get embarrassed?"
Sam face palmed, "I hate you sometimes, you know that, right?"
"Pffft," Sirius waved her words away, "Love, hate, same thing really."
Frustrated beyond belief and temporarily forgetting possible spectators, Sam tackled the grey eyed boy.
For the second time that morning, the air rushed out of their lungs as they fell onto the grass.
"Hate…you!" she gasped, struggling to push herself off him.
"And yet," he wheezed, wrapping his arms around her, "You're always all over me."
Her hands were trapped so she did what any normal person would do…she head-butted him.
"Ouch!"
Sirius jerked, freeing Sam's hands and allowing her to rub her head, wincing.
"I'm not even sorry," she said.
Sirius fixed her with a 'you're going to pay for that' look, but before he could act on it, several loud wolf-whistles pierced the air.
Scrambling away from the boy, Sam felt embarrassment heat her.
A chorus of 'Aww' sounded from the group of kids.
"Ah, I think I've had enough of being outside for now…" she said awkwardly.
"Fair enough," mumbled Sirius, holding his sore head.
Sam made them walk the longer way back to the castle, not wanting to go near the other students.
On the way, they stopped and put away the brooms they had borrowed and Sam was glad to be away from them.
When they entered Hogwarts once more, they decided it would be best to go and find the two prefects and Albus.
It didn't take long…to find Albus at least.
They found him in the kitchens when Sirius had impulsively decided to stop by and grab a sandwich.
"Albus?" questioned a dumbfounded Sam as they moved further into the spacious kitchen.
The green eyed boy froze guiltily and turned to face them, his cheeks bulging with, what she guessed by the wrappers in his hand, Chocolate Frogs.
Albus gave them a little, hesitant wave.
Sirius and Sam walked over to him, Sirius demanding, "What are you doing here? I thought you were making sure Rose and Scorpius don't kill each other."
Albus flinched and opened his mouth to apologise…
"Eww, that's gross Al!" Sam squealed, "Swallow first, please!"
Sheepishly, the boy chewed and did as requested a few moments later.
"Well," he began slowly, shifting from foot to foot, "I was with them…until I ran out of Jelly Slugs…"
"Albus!" admonished Sam and Sirius simultaneously.
"They were fine when I left them!" he defended.
"And how long ago was that?" Sam asked shrewdly, hands on her hips and an eyebrow raised.
"Um," Albus checked his watch, "Half an hour?"
"And what have you done in that time? Hmm?" she pressed.
"I, uh, I…" he stammered before his expression lit up with triumph, "I found this!"
He spun around and pointed to the wall.
"Wow," Sirius rolled his eyes, "A wall, well done, Al."
Albus huffed exasperatedly and pointed again, "Look, it's a carving!"
Curious now, Sam shuffled closer to the green eyed boy, Sirius following right behind her.
"Oh," she said with surprise, "Cute! It's a little heart!"
She reached a hand out and traced the outline, "I wonder who did it and how long ago…"
Albus wore his features in a way that clearly said 'I did well, didn't I?'
Smug git…
She took her hand away from the wall and lightly punched Albus.
"Hey!" he grumbled.
Sirius clapped a hand to the other boy's back, "Don't take it personally, she's very violent toda-Ouch!"
It was then Sam's turn to feel smugness shape her expression.
"Well, boys," she said firmly, "We'd better go and find Rose and Scorpius now."
She spun around and marched determinedly out of the kitchens, choosing not to hear the boys debating which mangled body they would find, Scorpius' or Rose's.
As she reached the Entrance Hall, a voice called out to her.
Sam glanced around and spotted a red haired girl on the marble staircase.
For a second, she had thought it was Rose.
"Lucy," she greeted, smiling, "What's up?"
The girl looked quizzically at her for a moment before shrugging and saying, "I wanted to talk to you about your classes."
Sam pulled a face, this can't be good.
"It's nothing bad," Lucy reassured her, laughing lightly, "I just wondered if you would be interested in doing any optional electives with me."
Sam frowned slightly and tried to find a way to ask the girl why, without it coming off as rude.
Thankfully, Lucy explained, "I just figured you might want a fun class away from everyone else…meaning Rose and Roxy…those two can be pretty full on."
Sirius and Albus turned up beside Sam then and waved to the other girl.
"So," Lucy drew out the word, "Maybe you want to take music with me?"
Sam bit her lip, "I would, but I'm not really into music that much…"
"Oh," the red head was disappointed for a second before she brightened, "Are you into art? Because the art class is at the same time and the classes are small so they combine them."
Sam grinned, "Sounds great!"
"Yay!" Lucy clapped and beamed, "I'll tell Professor Longbottom and Professor Wyatt, he's the art and music teacher."
"Hey, Lucy," Sam called as the girl turned to run up the stairs, "Thanks and oh, by the way, have you seen Rose around?"
Lucy paused, face crinkled in thought, "On the fourth floor I think."
Then she skipped off up the staircase.
Sam grabbed Albus and Sirius and pulled them along.
"Fourth floor, fourth floor," muttered Sam, "Is this the fourth floor?"
Rolling their eyes, both boys agreed that it was the right floor.
"Great, Rose might be around here somewhere then," she grinned.
A sudden exclamation of pain sounded from around the next corner and the three sped up to investigate.
"Found you!" Sam cried before belatedly freezing and surveying the scene.
What…?
Rose was against the wall and Scorpius was pressed up to her, his hands flattened on the stone either side of her.
"Well," Sirius cleared his throat, "This is interesting…"
