REVIEW
Chloe stepped off the treadmill; she had been running for 10 minutes, the whole time not being able to take her mind off Beca and Aubrey, wondering desperately how it was going. She allowed herself to check her phone; she saw one new message from Aubrey.
Hey C,
Could you drop home and make sure Beca's alright?
I may have been too harsh and yelled at her…
Just remind her I love her
Xo
Chloe was shocked. Why would Aubrey yell at her for this?! And why was she not at home comforting the small brunette right now?! Chloe ran a hand through her hair as she quickly dialled Aubrey's number.
"Aubrey Posen speaking." Aubrey answered out of habit even though she knew it was her best-friend.
"Why would you yell at Beca for this?! What the hell is wrong with you? I thought you would be understanding, she's your sister for goodness sakes!" Chloe immediately yelled into the phone, not bothering to say 'hi' first.
"Excuse me? I have every right to upset, why would I be 'understanding' about this?" Aubrey was taken aback and confused at her best-friends reaction.
"Self-harm is a serious issue Brey! Beca is unstable! How could you yell at her?!" Chloe was beyond disappointed in Aubrey. She was such a caring person and for to respond like this was just horrible.
On the other end Aubrey froze at the words self-harm. No. Beca was okay, she would tell her if she wasn't, wouldn't she? Aubrey thought back to their earlier conversation, Beca had wanted to tell her something but she had just assumed she was going to admit to sleeping with Brad.
"…what?" Aubrey whispered into the phone.
"She was so worried about telling you Bree! But I assured her you would be understanding and help her through it! Do you even know if she's okay?!" Chloe was yelling into the phone.
By this point tears were streaming down Aubrey's face. How did she not notice? "She didn't tell me… I interrupted before she had a chance. Oh god Chlo, I yelled at her for sleeping with Brad. What if she not okay?"
"Shit. Shit, shit, shit! Alright, go back home right now. I'll meet you there." Chloe could hear Aubrey's breath increasing at an alarming pace. "Aubrey, calm down. It's not your fault, just go home as quick as you can, alright Hun?" Chloe comforted.
"…Okay I'll see you there." Aubrey took a deep breath and started the car and prayed Beca hadn't done anything stupid.
She drove as quickly as she could; it took her less than 15 minutes to get back home due to her breaking a dozen road rules. She got in the lift and slammed the button to her floor. She tapped her feet impatiently until she finally heard the 'ding' announcing she was at her floor.
Running to her apartment she pushed the door open, not bothering to close it behind her. "Beca?! Beca are you here? I'm so sorry." She yelled into the eerily silent apartment.
She ran to Beca's room and stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the notes. She read over them in seconds. She felt her whole body go cold, she feared the worst. She burst through Beca's door and in to her room, seeing nothing but clothing and an unmade bed.
"Beca?! Where are you? Beca!" Aubrey yelled.
She ran out of Beca's room. She headed to the bathroom and noticed the door slightly open and the light on. She felt her stomach do flips and willed herself not to vomit as she approached the bathroom. She opened the door. "Beca, I'm coming in" she said as she poked her head around the corner.
There lay Beca, body limp and lifeless on ground, her head slightly propped up against the wall and just in underwear. There was blood surrounding her body and still dripping out for the vicious slashes on both the small brunettes' arms.
Aubrey ran to her seemingly lifeless body, shaking her shoulders. "Beca! Baby please wake up! Beca!" Aubrey practically screamed at her. Beca's eye fluttered open, they weren't focused as she whispered so low that Aubrey only just managed to hear her "I'm sorry Bree, I love you." Beca's eye closed again.
"No Beca! You have to stay awake!" She begged the younger girl. Aubrey took out her phone and dialled 911 with one hand and checked for a pulse with the other. A lady on the other end answered in calm tone. Aubrey spat out the details of the situation and her address, begging them to come as soon as possible. They informed her to keep pressure on the wounds and hung up.
Aubrey grabbed two towels off the rack and tightly wrapped them around each of Beca's wrist. She heard the front door open and the sound of Chloe's frantic voice. "Beca?! Aubrey?!"
"Chloe, we're in the bathroom, come quick!" Aubrey yelled back.
She heard running footsteps and then a sudden intake of breath. "Oh no, Beca, baby what have you done?" Chloe voice broke as ran to the sisters and knelt over Beca.
"The ambulance is on its way, can you hold pressure on this wrist?" Aubrey asked in between sobs.
"Of course." She turned to Beca holding as much pressure on the wound as she could. "Honey you need to wake up. Please?" There was no response.
"There's blood everywhere, this is my fault, I shouldn't have yelled at her." Aubrey whispered.
"This isn't your fault Brey, you didn't know." Chloe tried to comfort her.
"But I should have…" Aubrey whispered too low for Chloe to hear. She scanned the rest of the Beca's body checking for more wounds. She paused on Beca's thighs, seeing a dozen or so hurtful insults that broke Aubrey's heart to read, one however stood out the most. It looked old, however very deep. Aubrey ran her finger over the scar and tilted her head a little to get a better view. The word 'rape' was written carved into her skin in big block letters. Aubrey stopped breathing and froze.
Chloe, who was focused on Beca's pulse when she noticed Aubrey stop breathing, she followed her gaze and saw the words carved into her leg and could now make out what they said, she paused on the particular word that Aubrey had, and let out a small whimper. "It's going to be okay Brey, we just need to wait for the ambulance and everything will be alright." She tried to convince the blonde and also herself.
They heard the wailing sirens of an ambulance outside the apartment and the rushing of footsteps soon followed. Chloe gently put Beca's arm down, which seemed to have finally stopped bleeding, and quickly left to stand outside the bathroom. She saw the paramedics burst into the apartment.
"She's in here." Chloe yelled in panicked voice, gesturing for them to come over. They went in to the bathroom and asked the two girls to leave to give them space to work. They reluctantly waited outside the bathroom watching the paramedics get to work. Aubrey couldn't take it anymore as she broke down, resting her head in the crook of Chloe's neck. The redhead hugged her back, silently begging the universe to save Beca.
After what felt like eternity they lifted Beca on to the stretcher and carried her down to the ambulance, Aubrey and Chloe following close behind. They offered for Aubrey to ride in the ambulance and Chloe drove closely behind.
Aubrey sat beside Beca and laid a gentle hand on her upper arm, begging her to wake up. As they placed a tube down Beca's throat in order to pump her stomach Beca chocked. Aubrey was momentarily excited thinking she had woken up; however realised it was just an involuntary reaction.
They made it to the hospital and informed Aubrey and Chloe to wait in the waiting room, to which they reluctantly agreed. The pair sat next to each other, both leaning in to each other for support.
"I should have known" Aubrey whispered into Chloe's shoulder.
"You didn't know because she didn't want you to know. She didn't want to upset you. I only knew because I walked in on her in the shower yesterday. I wanted to tell you as soon as I found out but she wouldn't let me. She eventually agreed to tell you herself."
"Thankyou Chlo, you shouldn't have to go through this again. I'm so sorry."
Chloe shut her eyes at the memory, picturing her sister and how similar the situations were. "This is different. Beca's going to make it, I know it." Chloe said, taking hold of Aubrey's hand and giving it a firm squeeze.
"It said the word 'rape' on her leg." Aubrey stuttered out, her voice breaking multiple times.
"I know, I saw it too. We'll talk to her about it when she's better. For now, try not to think of it."
The pair remained silent for what felt like hours. Eventually a nurse came out. "Aubrey Posen?" She called.
Aubrey and Chloe both jumped up and ran towards the nurse. "Yes?" The replied in unison.
"Beca Mitchell is your step sister, correct?" The nurse asked.
"Yes. How is she? Is she okay?" Aubrey asked, feeling the panic rise, making her stomach twist and turn.
"She's lost a lot of Blood; however she is in stable condition. She should wake up within 12 to 24 hours; however that is not guaranteed due to the amount of, what we assume was MDMA, she took and the amount of blood that was lost. It could take less than that or more time, depending."
A sigh of relief was heard from both girls. "Will there be any permanent, physical effects to her body?" Aubrey asked.
"At this stage we can't be one-hundred per cent certain; however apart from tendonitis on both of her forearms and upper arms she should be physically fine, However she will have permanent scarring. Now as for the mental side, once she wakes up we legally have keep her here under observation for 48 hours, we have a team of qualified psychologist who Beca will be required to meet with. After the 48 hours, as she is under 18, it will be up to Warren and Sheila Mitchell as what happens with treatment after her stay here." The nurse explained.
"What? It should be up to me what happens after, she lives with me." Aubrey protested. Her parents would either force her into some mental ward or force her to live with them again, which Aubrey was sure would only worsen the situation.
"I'm sorry but it says here that they are her legal guardians therefore it is up to them." The nurse explained
"No! You don't understand, they kicked her out! There has to be something you can do!?" Aubrey explained.
"I'm sorry. Warren Mitchell has already been informed and is on his way here. The only way is for Warren and Sheila to agree to give legal guardianship to you."
Aubrey sighed. She hadn't even thought about changing guardianship when Beca moved in, she just assumed.
"Okay, thank-you so much. Can we see her now?" Aubrey asked.
"Of course." The nurse said and led the pair to Beca's room. Chloe took hold of Aubrey's hand for comfort. The nurse opened the curtains and allowed the two to enter. Beca was lying on the bed looking smaller and more fragile than ever. She was incredibly pale and had multiple tubes hooked up to her body.
The pair took a seat either side of the girl. Chloe brushed a hair away from her forehead and lightly kissed her on the cheek. "Please wake up soon, baby."
Aubrey studied Chloe's face for a while before Chloe noticed and asked what she was staring at. Aubrey sighed. "You love her don't you?"
Chloe eyes remained locked on the small brunette. "Yes." She answered honestly. Aubrey remained silent for a while.
"I think you'd be good for her. And I know she feels the same way."
Chloe looked up at Aubrey, a little shocked. As she realised Aubrey was serious a small smile broke across her face. "Really? I thought you hated the idea of us being together?"
Aubrey raised an eyebrow and smiled a little. "I still do! However, I have come to the conclusion that you make her happy and she makes you happy. And you guys are my favourite people in world, so why not?"
"Aww Aubs, you're so cute. I love you Bree." Chloe said, managing to get both of Aubrey's nicknames into the one sentence.
"I love you too Chlo."
Three days had passed and Beca was still not awake. Warren and Sheila had arrived however had only talked to the doctors and had not actually seen Beca yet, much to Aubrey's disappointment. Aubrey and Chloe had spent the entire time by Beca's side, apart from the occasional food/coffee break and to shower. Beca had not even moved an inch.
The doctors assured Aubrey and Chloe that Beca's condition was fine and that there was nothing from keeping her waking up and that it was natural for her to sleep this long after everything that had happened, however this didn't stop Chloe and Aubrey from stressing to the point they'd both have grey hair before they made it 30.
It had been 74 hours since Beca was admitted. Aubrey had fallen asleep on the tiny couch provided and Chloe was sitting next to Beca side, lightly holding one of Beca's hands in her own. She was signing Bruno Mars' 'Just the way you are' to Becasoftly and was deep in thought.
Beca was firstly aware of the sound of a beautiful voice singing lightly. She couldn't figure out where it was coming from. She was secondly aware of the throbbing pain in both her arms and her head. She eventually opened her eyes, the room was so bright and white that she whimpered softly and then immediately shut them again.
Chloe snapped out of her daze and looked to Beca. "Beca?! Are you awake sweetie?" Chloe asked hopefully.
Beca slowly re-opened her eyes cringing. She focused on Chloe and was confused. "Chloe?"
"Yeah I'm right here honey."
"Where am I?" Beca asked still groggy from her sleep.
Chloe bit her lip. "You're in the hospital sweetie. You tried to kill yourself." Chloe said as calmly as she could. She held on to Beca's hand hoping she wouldn't react badly.
Suddenly everything flashed through Beca's mind. The fight she had with Aubrey, the suicide notes she left and the relief she had felt when she thought everything was over. This couldn't be happening, she can't have failed. Beca's breathing began to pick pace as she started panicking
"No, no, no. Why did you save me?! I wanted to die! Why didn't you let me die?!" Beca started screaming at Chloe with tears streaming down her face. Aubrey awoke to the commotion and immediately ran toward Beca and pressed the button for the nurse before grabbing Beca's free hand in order to calm her.
The two older women tried to calm her but to no avail. They could hear Beca's heart rate pick up speed on the monitor as her breath became faster and shallower. As the nurse came in Beca passed out.
So hope you enjoyed
