Ch.9

Vanellope sorrowfully roamed the village, her sobs echoing louder and louder. The cotton candy rumbled and down poured the heavy chocolate rain. Vanellope looked up, surprised, then slumped back down into a depressed state. Reese looked at her and nudged her nose against Vanellope's leg. Vanellope looked down at her puppy and gave her a small smile, continuing her stroll.

"Well, Reese, looks like we're in a sticky situation," she chuckled, trying to lighten up the mood. "But things could be worse right now."

Vanellope smiled at her puppy, but inside her soul was slowly dying. Never in her life have she felt this sad before. Usually, she was so happy and lively, but she feels like all of her energy were draining from her code. Vanellope took in a breath and continued walking, her eyes fixed on the ground.

"I can't believe dad would do this to me, of all of the people, he chose to take the initiative," she growled under her breath. "What does he know, anyways?"

Vanellope sighed and clutched onto her cloak tightly. The rain began to fall harder, but to her, they felt like sharp knives slicing through her body, impaling her to death. Vanellope shook her head and blinked through the rain.

"I feel like everything that was ever good in life, every chocolate rose I see, is slowly losing its light," she mumbled.

Vanellope sighed and continued walking, when the air around her grew twenty degrees colder. Two figure stood in front of her and glared at her with demonic yellow eyes. "Well, what do we have here? A little princess all alone?" it growled. Vanellope looked up and noticed that it was none other than Gas and Oil. She cascaded her gaze to the ground and kept her gaze there, and walked past them two bothers.

"H-hey! We're talking to you!" Gas shouted

"Are you even listening to us?" Oil asked her.

Vanellope shook her head and picked up Reese, strolling away from the two. "Leave me alone. I'm not in the mood," she grumbled. Gas and Oil looked at each other, and flew towards her. 'Uh, hello? Anyone in there?" Oil said. "Earth to Princess Vanellope, hello?"

"I said leave me alone. Can't you take a hint?" she snapped.

Oil snarled and summoned a dark energy ball. He hurled it at Vanellope and watched it as it exploded in her area. The two brothers snorted and laughed, cackling like a hyena. "Aw, too much sugar for you?" he chortled. He looked up as the smoke cleared up, and was shocked to see Vanellope standing there intact. She turned around and glared at him, her body illuminating brightly.

"I said leave me alone!" she shouted.

The skies were now clouding up, rumbling and growling. She held her hands out in front of her, and out spewed rock candy shards. Gas and Oil dodged the hurling shards that were charging towards them at full speed. One of the shards zipped past Gas, leaving a cut in the jumpsuit and skin.

"Ow! What's with you today?" Gas howled, clutching his wound.

Vanellope hung her head low and clenched her fists tightly. "You have no idea what it's like to have someone in your life that you care deeply about, only to have someone interfere with that relationship," she said. Tears slid down her face and splashed onto the ground. The minute it came in contact with the gravel, a sudden light shimmered around Vanellope, her aura sparkling bright. "You don't understand what it's like to love somebody, and then have someone try to separate you from that person. If you don't understand, then stay out of it!"

A cold rush of wind blasted in her face, blowing her hood back. Reese, now frightened, ran off into the distance, trying o find help, or shelter. Gas and Oil shrugged and snapped their fingers, summoning an ogre looking creature. The skin was all rough-looking and was a ghastly green color, fingernails black and chipped. He wore nothing but a zebra print cloth tied around his waist and his hair was messy and disheveled. Vanellope gagged at the scent he was giving off, choking and waving her hands in front of her.

"Oh my code! What'd you have for breakfast?" she asked.

Snapping back into reality, Vanellope stared down at him and dashed towards the beast. She ran in circles around it, a trail of blue pixels flying behind her. The ogre grunted and smashed his fists onto the ground and snatched her up from the ground. Vanellope struggled to escape his grip, but to no avail. The ogre brought her up to her eye level and snickered.

"You are a worthless little girl," he chortled.

Vanellope slowly looked at her, her eyes looking so determined. "I may be worthless, but at least I don't smell like someone who just died in their mom's fish smelling, decayed stomach!" she shot back. With that, Vanellope glitched out of his grasp and somersaulted in the air, then landed on the ground. Slipping the licorice hair tie out of her hair and transforming it into a longer licorice, she tossed it around the spiteful creature.

"Electric licorice rope!" she exclaimed.

At an instant, blue electricity coursed through the long piece of candy, electrifying the beast. He cried in pain and agony, slowly disappearing in a flurry of pixels and his shrill cry ringing in the cold silence. Vanellope retracted the licorice, returning it to its normal size and tied it back in her hair.

"Unless you really want to die tonight, leave me alone," she growled.

Gas and Oil stared at her in shock, watching her walk away from the two. "She's gotten stronger," Oil whispered. "What should we do, brother?" Gas pondered on an idea and smirked. Summoning a bow an arrow, he aimed it at Vanellope and let go of the arrow. The brother watched the arrow hurtling towards Vanellope, the weapon giving off a dark aura. Vanellope stopped to turn around, catching a glimpse of the arrow. The next thing she knew, she crumpled down to the ground, crying out in pain. Vanellope painfully looked up and saw the two brothers howling and chortling.

"Who's the big one now?" Oil taunted.

"Some heroine you are," Gas added.

Vanellope whimpered and hugged her waist. From a distance, she heard Reese's barking getting louder and louder. She looked behind her and saw a figure running towards her. When it came closer, she realized that it was a boy. Slowly, she got up and whispered, "Rancis. Help me." Rancis came to her aide and picked her up. He looked up and saw Gas and Oil and growled under his breath.

"You… you'll regret this," he snarled at them.

Vanellope clutched onto his shirt and stifled back a cry. Rancis saw how hurt she was, so he ran over a bench and set her down there, holding on to her hands. "I'll be back for you, princess," he whispered. He turned to Gas and Oil and pulled out a sword out of nowhere. "I got to take care of these goons for messing with my girl." Rancis' fingers slipped away from Vanellope, and she watched him charge with his sword.

"Rancis…" she murmured, slipping into unconsciousness.

Vanellope stirred and croaked out a groan. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw a figure looming over her. "Hey, hey! You in there, princess?" it said. Blinking a couple of times, she saw that it was Rancis smiling at her. "You scared me a bit, princess."

Vanellope tried to sit up, but yelped in pain. She looked down and saw that there was her side was bandaged. "Those goons attacked you with a powerful arrow, nothing I've ever seen before. It injured your severely, but I was able to stop the bleeding," he explained. Vanellope smiled gratefully and wrapped her arms around herself. Rancis smiled and handed her some clothes.

"Not that I don't like the dress on you, but it's kinda dirty. You can change into this while I get clean it for you," he said.

"Thanks," she replied. "Where's the bathroom?" Rancis pointed to an hallway and tilted his fingers. "Down the hall, take a right, first door you see," he said. Vanellope smiled once again and walked headed towards the bathroom. She entered the bathroom door and closed the door behind her. She quickly changed into into a white T-shirt and brown shorts. Vanellope slipped the locket into the shorts pocket and looked at her reflection, now realizing how disheveled her hair was and began finger combing her hair.

"Wait, what am I doing?" Vanellope asked herself.

She pulled her hands from her hair and splashed water in her face. After a while, she looked at her reflection and, for a milisecond, saw her father in the mirror. She blinked and her own reflection was spotted.

"Oh, daddy. If only you understood," she murmured.

Vanellope walked out and rejoined Rancis in the living room, who was polishing his sword. Vanellope sat next to him and watched as he diligently worked. "That's a beautiful sword," she said. Rancis looked at her and held it up proudly.

"Thanks. It's from my ancestor. It's a Fluggerbutter heirloom," he explained. "From what I've been told, my ancestor was a very brave person, and he was the bravest person to ever live."

"He sure is," Vanellope agreed. "Rancis, there's something I have to tell you. Something I should have told you for a long time."

Rancis looked at her, so she continued. "Remember when we were at the carnival, and we were on the Ferris Wheel? And that light came out of nowhere and went into your body?" she said. "Well, there's a reason for all that. The truth is that... you're the descendent of Randy Nuttingham."

Rancis looked at her for a while, not saying anything. He stared at her in shock as he took this all in. "A-are you serious?" he said finally. "M-my ancestor was Randy Nuttingham, the Randy Nuttingham? Are you being legit right now?!"

"I'm being absolutely legit," she replied, giggling at his expression.

Rancis got up and paced around the living room. He stared at the ceiling for a while, and turned to look at Vanellope. "How do you know this? How do you all of this?" he asked dubiously.

"Because my ancestor was Princess Vanilliana Sugarcandy, the first princess of Sugar Rush," Vanellope answered simply.

Vanellope sighed and looked at her brooch. "I think it's time you knew the truth, Rancis. The whole truth," she said. Rancis sat down next to her and Vanellope told him everything: how she retrieved the Pink Sugar Crystal, Vanilliana, her powers and abilities, the Ferris Wheel fiasco, Randy Nuttingham, and the fight about her father. After a while, Rancis remained silent, taking everthing that spewed out her her mouth and regestering it into his mind. "Wow, that's... something," he finally said. "No wonder you've been so magical lately."

"So you're not mad?" Vanellope asked him.

Rancis looked at her and flashed his trademark smile, which made Vanellope weak to the knees. "I'm not mad at you. Please, it'll take more than that to make me mad at a beautiful girl," he said. Vanellope smiled goofily and looked down at the ground. A silence hung in the air, and neither of them knew what to say. Vanellope looked around the house and took in the neatness.

"Nice crib," she complimented.

"Thanks," Rancis said, smiling at her.

The two stared at each other for a while, slowly leaning in, but a beeping interrupted the moment. "I'd better check on the cake," he mumbled, getting up from the couch and walking over to the oven. Vanellope sighed and opened the tv.

"Is it okay that I watch some TV?" she asked.

"Knock yourself out," Rancis replied.

Vanellope flipped through the channels in a bored manner, until she settled for ABC Family, which was playing the movie "Titantic." Vanellope was so fixed into the movie, she had forgotten that Rancis was there until she felt his arms around her waist. She jumped a bit, but calmed down and nestled into his touch.

"It's so sad," she mumbled.

Rancis wiped off her tears and pulled her into a hug. "I know, but it's okay now," he whispered. He wiped off her tears that were sliding down her cheeks and dried her eyes. "Don't cry; it'll ruin your beautiful face." Vanellope blinked at this and smiled, a blush creeping on her face. She rested her head on his chest, listening to the soft beating of his heart.

"Rancis, can I ask you a question?"

"Shoot."

"Do you like anyone?"

Rancis' face turned crimson red at that question. He looked at her like a deer in a headlights, but smiled and stared into the distance. "Yeah, I like a girl. I've only met her a couple of days ago, but we've been through so much these past few days, and... I feel like we were meant to be together." Vanellope was a bit intrigued at his response and looked at him.

"Tell me about her," she said. "What is it about her that you like?"

"Everything about her: her luminous eyes, her personality, her cuteness whenever she blushes, her feisty attitude, but the way she smiles is just... gosh. Imagine the most beautiful thing you've ever seen and times is by two. That's how beautiful it is. MIx it all together, and you got yourself one heck of a girl. She's one of a kind, my one in a million."

Vanellope stared at him with such hurt in her eyes. Rancis saw the tears forming in her eyes and frowned. "What? What's wrong?" he asked her, reaching out for her cheek. Vanellope blinked and shook her head, wiping the tears off. "Nothing, just, uh... does she know you like her?" she asked, trying to keep her voice even. Rancis sighed and got up from the couch, He took Vanellope's hand and pulled her out to the porch. Rancis sighed at looked at the starry sky (A/N: Remind you of a story? nudge nudge? hint hint? raise eyebrows?).

"I mean, I know I haven't known her for long, but when I saw her eyes, I knew we had something special, like some type of zing. But I'm afraid of telling her how I feel about her," he admitted.

"Why?" Vanellope wanted to know.

Rancis sighed and stroked the petals to a chocolate rose, then looked at Vanellope. "What if she doesn't like me? What if she fell in love with some other suitor and starts to date him? I want to tell her that she's the only one in my life, but... I"m afraid of rejection, of being put down."

Vanellope blinked at his confession and took in what he had just said. 'Suitor? But... I only told Rancis about my suitor issues,' Vanellope realized in her mind. 'Could it be... that Rancis is in love with me as well?'

"The girl you like? Is she... your everlasting love?" Vanellope asked.

Rancis looked at Vanellope dead in the eye and plucked a chocolate rose from the bush and tucked it into her hair. He caressed her chin and leaned in. "She's more than just my everlasting love," he whispered. "She is my Evangeline."

Vanellope blushed at the tone of his voice and smiled shyly. Rancis winked at her and walked back in, leaving Vanellope outside. She looked to make sure the coast was clear and squealed with delight, jumping up and down like a bunny.

"He so likes me! He totally likes me!" she giggled, her blush growing redder and redder.

She took a deep breath and regained her composure and calmed down, then walked back in. She was greeted by the warm scent of chocolate cake. Rancis handed her a slice and they sat down on the couch, eating the chocolatey goodness. Vanellope sighed in complete content and spotted a High School Musical cd on the counter. She picked it and looked at Rancis, smirking."Uh... Candlehead left it here, and I forgot to return it," he said.

Vanellope giggled and popped it into the dvd player, flipping it onto to the song "Breaking Free" She looked at Rancis and pulled him to his feet. "If I'm singing to High School Musical, so are you," she said. Rancis sighed in mock defeat and looked Vanellope dead in the eye.

"If any of the guys hears me singing this, I'm coming after you," he threatened jokingly.

"Ohh, I'm so scared," she teased, slipping on his jacket.

Rancis smiled and handed her a microphone, then began singing to the song. (A/N: when they start singing the song, just imagine them reenacting the "Breaking Free" scene in High School Musical)

We're soarin', flyin'

There's not a star in heaven

that we can't reach

If we're trying

So we're breaking free

You know the world can see us

In a way that's different then who we are

Creating space between un

'Till we're separate hearts

But your faith it gives me strength

Strength to believe

We're breakin' free

We're soarin'

Flyin'

There's not a star in heaven

That we can't reach

If we're trying

But we're breaking free

Oh, we're breaking free

Ohhhh

Can you feel it building

Like a wave the ocean just can't control

Connected by a feeling

Ohhh, in our very souls

Very souls

Rising till it lifts us up

So everyone can see

Flyin'

There's not a star in heaven

That we can't reach

If we're trying

But we're breaking free

Ohhhh runnin'

Climbin'

to get to that place to be all we can be

Now's the time

So we're breaking free

We're breaking free

ohhh, yeah

More than hope

More than fath

this is true

This is fate

And together

We see it coming

More than you

More than me

Not a want, but a need

Both of us breaking free

Soarin'

Flyin'

There's not a star in heaven

That we can't reach

If we're trying

Yeah we're breaking free

Breaking free

We're runnin'

Ohhhh, climbin'

To get to that place to be all that we can be

Now's the time

(Now's the time)

So we're breaking free

Ohhhh, we're breaking free

Ohhhh

You know the world can see us

In a way that's different than who we are

The song ended and Vanellope stared into Rancis' bright blue eyes. Rancis smiled and closed the dvd player. "I, uh, think it's time we hit the sack," he said. He took Vanellope's hand and led her to a spare room. "You can sleep in here, and I'll be across the hall if you need anything." Vanellope smiled at him and brushed her hair out of her face.

"You know... you were very brave out there, facing Gas and Oil like that," she said. She kissed his cheek and winked. "You really are Randy Nuttingham's descendant."

Rancis blushed at the comment and watched as she entered the room. "Good night, Sir Fudgehead," she said, closing the door. Rancis stood there in place, then grinned and punched his fist in the air. He closed all the lights and went to bed as well.

"The princess is at my house, the princess is at my house," he singsonged.

He flopped onto his bed and fell asleep faster tham you could you say "Sugar Rush."

It was about two in the morning, and Vanellope slept soundly, a happy smile on her face. She snuggled her head against the marshmallow pillow. It would have been peaceful if it weren't for some glass breaking, followed by a scream for help. Vanellope immediately woke up at the sound and ran outside.

"Rancis? You okay?" she yelled.

She ran outside and gasped at the sight of Gas and Oil, with Rancis all tied up and gagged by a bandana. "Thanks for leading us here, but we'll be taking pretty boy here," OIl snapped, draping Rancis over his shoulder.

"Hey, get back here!" Vanellope shouted.

She pulled out her locket brooch and pinned it to her shirt, and glared at the two. "You're not taking him away from me! Electric storm!" Vanellope held out two peace signs, and a million bolts of electricity shot out. Gas and Oil screamed out with pain as they were shock, and Rancis flinched and let out a muffled cry.

"She's... gotten... really stronger, brother," OIl whimpered.

Gas nodded his head and smirked. "But we can handle this puny pest. Fangtana, I summon you!" he called out. A dark vortex popped out of nowhere, and a heavy gust of wind blew in Vanellope's face. Vanellope covered her ears, attempting to block out the ear piercing scream. A cackle was heard, and a young vampire girl about Vanellope's age appeared. She had pale skin, long jet black hair that hit her ankles and deep crimson eyes. She wore a black T-shirt, a red plaid skirt with chains on the side, black tights, black lace-up boots, black leather fingerless gloves and a ruby colored racing jacket. She smirked at Vanellope and flipped her hair dramatically.

"Vanellope Von Schweetz, a pleasure to be in your presence," she said. "I am Fangtana, one of Turbo's best servants. And I will be your opponent this evening."

Vanellope gasped and glitched out of the way just as Fangtana lunged at her. Vanellope aimed millions on rock candy shards at Fangtana, but none of them seem to affect her. She merely brushed them, or they whizzed past her. "Is that the best you can do?" Fangtana mocked her. "You're weak. Let me show you power!" Fangtana's eyes began to glow red and a dark aura lit around her. The wind grew harsh and dangerous. Fangtana laughed wickedly, flashing out her fangs, as dark energy bolts formed at the palms of her hands.

"And here I thought you'd a challenge," She cackled. "Silly me!"

"Finish her, Fangtana! Retrieve the brooch!" Gas ordered, chortling like an idiot with his brother.

Not wanting to waste anymore time, Fangtana fired the energy bolts at Vanellope, her malicious smile growing wider and wider when she heard Vanellope scream in pain. "This is what you get for interfering with our master's plan! You might as well hand over the PInk Sugar Crystal now, you little glitch!" She snickered. The locket brooch on Vanellope's shirt lit up with light, and Vanellope's eyes shot open. Power welled up inside of Vanellope, and a blast of erupted from the young girl. Vanellope's shone so brightly, it was almost blinding, and the energy Vanellope emitted overcame Fangtana's.

"Don't you ever, EVER, call me a 'glitch'!" She shouted angrily.

Vanellope held her hands out in front of her, pushing them forward and watched as Fangtana got hit by her powers. Fangtana hissed and fell to the ground, powerless. Gas and Oil stared in shock as the light died down and Vanellope collasped to the ground, exhausted. The twins looked at each other, a look of fear in their eyes.

"Brother, it seems that her time has come," Oil whispered.

Gas nodded and flew down to scoop up the unconscious vampire. "This is not over!" he growled. Fangtana's eyes glared at Vanellope and glinted. Vanellope panted and watched as Gas, OIl and Fangtana disappeared, with Rancis in their grasp.

"Rancis!" Vanellope screamed.

Rancis screamed a muffled cry, then they disappeared. Vanellope bashed her fists on the ground, crying bitterly. Something nudged Vanellope's arm, and she looked down to see Reese looking at her worriedly. Vanellope pulled Reese into a hug and continue to cry.

"They took him... they took Rancis," she cried. "And I didn't do anything to save him."

"You did more than you could possibly manage, Vanellope."

Vanellope looked up and saw Vanilliana behind her. She helped Vanellope up and looked at her straight in the eye. "You loved Rancis, so you fought hard to save him. The fact that you put yourself out there proves that your love for him gave you the power to take down the enemy." She continued. Vanellope wiped her tears and frowned.

"But they took him away," she mumbled.

Vanilliana looked at the ground hesitantly. "Rancis isn't the only one that got taken away by Turbo's cohorts," she said. Vanellope looked at Vanilliana suspiciously, feeling cautious. "What are you talking about?" Vanilliana sighed and looked at Vanellope straight in the eye.

"Every one of the racers were captured by Turbo, and were taken away to his lair," she informed them. "Including your father."

Vanellope's eyes widened in shock. "W-what?!"
